My Revival UK proof arrived today. Like many other Hodder and Stoughton proofs it has the words "Embargoed Hodder and Stoughton" very lightly throughout the book.
The Press Release/Publisher's Letter states it will be published in Hardback and eBook on 11th of November.

You lucky! According to my contact at the publisher, mine should already have arrived. But I am not the only european person to experience some troubles apparently.

I now doubt that i will be able to read any version prior to release... but I sure hope that i will still recieve this proof and not it to be lost during the shipping !!

Brian James Freeman has been good enough to allow me to quote his post:

Someone asked me: "Are bluelines and the unbound interoffice proofs the same thing?"

There are definitely some similarities and also some important differences between bluelines and the unbound interoffice proofs. They are different in the sense that:

1) the unbound interoffice proofs are printed in our office at various stages of production and may feature incomplete elements such as a lack of artwork, etc, and may also contain typos or design problems that we're in the process of finding and fixing.

2) bluelines are printed by the book printer and sent to our office for review and approval before they start the press. Every now and then we'll find a problem on the bluelines that needs corrected before the book is printed, but most of the time everything on the bluelines is exactly the same as the final book -- just printed on different paper, unbound, and untrimmed.

So these two items essentially represent two different stages of the publication process. Hope that helps!

Brian

This seems to fit this thread very nicely.

Thsnks Michael, yes it the Hardcover Review copy. All I'll say for now Michael is that its not a Doubleday Proof but I'm told its equal to or greater in terms of being RARE & It's the only Fine copy that our collecting circle knows of! I have some amazing new proofs I'll be posting soon, I look forward to sharing some pictures.

Here it is! One of the two copies known(in our collecting community anyways), this is the only fine copy at the moment! Very excited for this as I sold one of my 'Salem's Lot S/L's & a couple other items to get it. I never thought I'd do such a thing, but in means of being a rarity we only know of the two, it may not command the value or desire of a Doubleday to some it does for me!
http://rs777.pbsrc.com/albums/yy59/mrfjstbhf/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps9f373d1f.jpg~320x480

Of course I went & bought a replacement 'Salem's Lot S/L as it just didn't seem right.
Here's another RARE on CELL! As the catalog states Scribner claims they never produced this Proof, yet a handful or less are in collectors hands.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's not like either of those are Classic novels. So I wouldn't think the proofs of those would mean that much. Just shows that there is still a ton to learn in the collecting world.

When it comes to CD (and other small/specialty publishers) proofs I think it really depends on your personal collecting goals - to me, those proofs are virtually worthless. I'm just not interested in proofs other than those of the original publisher of the trade editions. So I'd say that every price a buyer and seller agree on is good (case by case basis).

I know that's not really helpful but I think you'll get many different answers, whereas there will be much more consensus when it comes to 'regular' proofs (i.e., Scribner, Viking, Putnam, Doubleday).

The Dark Man unbound proof

http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Dark-Man...item2ed9a4f4f1

I wrote to the seller to let him know that his description "A nice item for Stephen King and Glenn Chadbourne completists looking for a unique item, since this is the only 3rd state proof of the manuscript!" is incorrect, as I also have a copy of the DM 3rd Proof. He responded quickly, said he already had a bid so couldn't update it, thanked me for the info, and asked me if I knew what the going price for the CD IT 25th proof (not the unbound) was.

I picked this up on eBay the other day. I couldn't remember if I had the proof of volume 1 or not so I checked the database and sure enough I had it. The proof of volume 1 has a white taped spine and my notes reminded me that it was a pretty scarce proof. It is important bibliographically for King collectors since it has an introduction (foreword) by Stephen King. But the proof was recalled since it had no punctuation (periods or commas) throughout the book. Just another oddity in this crazy hobby.

The first round of proofs were recalled by Scribner because they ran the pages through some sort of despeckling algorithm that was so efficient it removed all of the punctuation. I had two copies and, for some reason, Scribner never asked for mine back. They issued replacements with periods and commas and stuff shortly thereafter.

This is the only Signet proof I know of. There are a few Plume proofs (for DT paperbacks) but no Signets I think. I'd say this is about what a nice copy is worth - they're not super scarce.

But it makes building a "complete" set of proofs both easier and difficult; easier because some of these may one-offs, and you'd never see that missing copy other than eBay; difficult because some of these may be one-offs, and you'd never see that missing copy it other than eBay ... and the price will reflect it. Plus now we know that are at least three proof states for a lot of these (Full Dark No Stars, for example, I know has a 1st, 2nd and 3rd state) and there may be more. I'd love to build complete sets, but if only one copy was ever put out there and you can't get it ... then what? Or if you only see a 1st state, what says there isn't a 2nd or a 3rd? I love these unbound proofs, but they may be the bane of completists , unless (like at least one collector here) you consider there to be no difference between the 1st, 2nd and 3rds and have just one copy in your collection suffice.

Looks like all the interoffice proofs and other proofs they gave away ends up on ebay
But since CD cannot sell them, it satisfy everybody

That one collector is me. I'll be happy if I get just one copy for each book. (I just got Blockade Billy and I'll be posting it soon. This leaves me just looking for Doctor Sleep.)

I tend to agree with John. I also collect proofs, and when I recently learned of the existence of these inter-office unbound proofs, I felt a little exasperated. Not only are there these unbound versions (in more than one state apparently), but there's also the regular bound proof sent to reviewers, etc. as well as bound inter office proofs on some books. So much like certain 1st Trade editions, with the numerous variants, there are now proofs with variants if you can all it that.

So yeah, it makes proof collecting more costly and challenging. That's if you're a completist collector... Personally, I'd go after the unbound proofs too, but like John, one copy of each would satisfy me.

I love proofs but I've never been interested in unbound and/or manuscript-like material, nor am I interested in proofs of what I consider to be reprints. With this avalanche of material coming on the market I'm glad it doesn't appeal to me.

Was me. Really wasn't planning on going that high, but I got caught up in the moment... I need help!!

Trust me, we've all been there. I once contacted an eBay seller who had listed an issue of Ubris with a BIN or Best offer option. I fully intended to make an offer but not only did I proceed to pay the full BIN price, I even bought another Ubris issue that he had not yet listed. So instead of buying one magazine for $350 or whatever I was planning to offer the seller, I spent at least three times as much because collecting fever took over and I was afraid someone else would 'steal' my magazines!

zelig

Thanks Michaël. Makes me feel a little better about it. That same day there was another item I wanted for about $100. Thankfully I was able to exercise some self control and not buy it. You sort of keep justifying it, that's it's only a hundred bucks. What's the big deal. But I think we all know that a hundred very quickly turns into thousands. So when I let that one go it sort of reassured me that at least I have the ability to hold off when it starts to get out of control.

biomieg
12-17-2014, 11:20 AM
Another thing I'm sure we've all done is overpaying for one item and then justifying it because you paid less than market value for something else... as if you can then somehow magically subtract one from the other while in reality all you did was spend money on two items instead of one... twisted logic!

WOW! I exchanged one copy of that Duma Proof a couple of years ago for a $300 item if I'm not wrong.

This was more than just the proof, though. And the UK Duma Key proof is pretty scarce! There are supposed to be 150 copies I think, but you hardly ever see them for sale.

One of those : "Black House partial proof (first 213 pages with cutout white cover)" is available on abebooks
>>> http://www.abebooks.com/BLACK-HOUSE-uncorrected-proof-copy-first/14628376411/bd?cm_ven=nl&cm_cat=trg&cm_pla=want_FR&cm_ite=viewbook

There are at least four different copies of that one on ABE right now. I can make a loooooong list of proofs (including this one) that are always listed on eBay and ABE. It would be better to only post them here if they are actually hard to find ;)

We dont necessarily know how rare some items are... or not ;)

I know, and I didn't mean to sound rude. I understand that if you're not specifically looking for a proof but you happen to come across one by accident you may think it's a special one. But if you search for 'stephen king proof' on ABE and you list the results alphabetically by title you will see that there are multiple copies listed of many titles.

I would say that the regular proofs and ARCs (not manuscripts and stuff like that) chronologically from The Dark Half to Black House are pretty easy to find, with the exception of the Green Mile proofs. The newer Scribner and Hodder proofs are more difficult, as are the older ones from the 1970s and 1980s.

Right. I think however you slice it though, I likely overpaid for what I got. Of course, the two most valuable/desirable items in there were the signed Just After Sunset and the UK Duma Key proof. And I'm guessing there's some added value in the fact that this was Lindelof's set of review copies, etc. with the letter.

The UK Duma Key proof is one of the scarcest recent proofs. There were 150 numbered copies done. Another scarce recent one is the UK proof of 11.22.63 without the "Embargoed" statement on the pages--about 70 copies.

Then the UK proof of "full dark no stars", should be rarer : only 77 copies !

I've also just used archival bags for storage. You can also put a backing board behind it like you would with comics. I'm guessing a custom traycase would work best if it's a really snug fit. Would be interesting to see what the binder comes up with.

Thanks for the advice about archival bags with backing boards. The issue with using the backing boards is that the pages are printed on both sides so half the content would be covered.

When I looked at the binders web-site they had a folder that I thought might have been suitable. During discussion with them on the weekend this would not work due to the number of pages. The advice was to make a custom traycase. The colour match would be close to what was used by CD for the slipcase and the title and author can be embossed on the front. The cost, as a one off, will be around A$200.

I will post some photos once I get it done. Having the money at the moment is the issue, having a new house built. If started now it would be ready by the end of Jan.

I think the Plume edition was done in 1989. It's over-priced due to the foreign book plate.

I don't remember what I paid for my copy, nor what I sold it for (I don't keep records, although I'm otherwise pretty OCD about my collecting habit) but I think $150-200 would be in the ballpark. It's not a very common proof but they do come up for sale every now and then. The fact that it's a proof of a (reprint)² also makes it somewhat less valuable than other proofs that are equally scarce, IMO. Although 'Salem's Lot is one of the true classics, of course.
