sorry to start it so early, but it's almost Monday here, and I am not sure my server will behave tomorrow morning - they posted a vague warning that anything might happen, with the thunderstorms and all. So:

***

As everyone already knows, I am a Russian bear. I don't know what I can add because my background and everything I can tell about myself is so remote, not only geographically, but first and foremost culturally and socially, from what is familiar to you my friends... I promised to Fruno (where the hell is he again???) and Jayson to post memoirs, and I swear I already started writing them, to make my country and its twisted Soviet and post-Soviet period a little more understandable.

Before the Revolution of 1917, my Grandmother was a countess - a real live one, you know, who would believe that? She had to conceal it all her life whenever it was possible; when it wasn't, she suffered for that. But although she lost her house, her social status and all her possessions, she did keep her manners, her French, her humor and her immense intelligence; if you ask me who influenced me most in life, it was she.

My mother studied history in our University... and then she was post-graduate... and then the big International Conference came, with participation of foreigners (from capitalist countries! from behind the iron curtain! oh what a really big event for mid-60s!)... in addition to being a brilliant, promising young scholar, my mother spoke a perfect French, a tradition of our family... so she was allowed to actually mix with the French side.

It was all Susan and Roland, of course. The French historian happily went back to his advanced-progressive-democratic-civilized France, leaving my pregnant mother here, behind the iron curtain, and never, ever tried to find out how she was. Luckily, she (or rather Grandma?) was wise enough not to let anyone know my father was French (capitalis, remember?), or else the end would have been very close to that of Susan's story, too.

At school I made friends with three boys; we were called the Musketeers, - the bear as Athos, Michael (lives in Paris) as Porthos, Alexander (lives in London) as Aramis, and one more Alexander (still here in St.Petersburg) as our D'Artagnan. We've remained friends for ever, almost 40 years by now. It's Michael and Alexander who now make it possible for me to travel.

My youth was very eventful, but explaining the context would take volumes.

I am married to the best woman in the world, her name is Helen. I play a number of musical instruments and speak a number of languages; my formal education is 7 years of in-depth philosophy, but I chose the life of an itinerant free-lance teacher-consultant-interpreter-translator - anything, if fact, connected with language, Russian or foreign. I was raised and educated a Communist and Atheist, but that's too long a story... and this story is already becoming way too long.

In a word, this site is one of the very best thing that ever happened to me in my long and eventful life!

Jean's memoirs...I would pay good money for that!

How many languages do you know? Which is your favorite?

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Do you prefer to read books in a particular language, or do you prefer them in the language they were originally written in?

What is your favorite holiday?

Beer, wine, or liquor?

Why a bear instead of any other animal? Were you just born that way? :D

How many languages do you know?
I can't really say, it depends on what we call "know". I am more or less fluent in English and French, and adequate in German if no eloquence is required; less so in Italian, and only marginally passable in Spanish; learning Japanese now. Also, I can understand what is written in, say, Portuguese (a Roman language) or Dutch-Swedish-Danish (Germanic), so I can't say the exact number.

Which is your favorite?
Russian, by far! The more I know the more I marvel at how inexaustibly, fantastically rich it is.
Among foreign languages, it's English.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
In London, but only if I could freely travel to St.Petersburg and back. If the additional condition was that I couldn't leave, I think I'd stay here. (or maybe it would be London anyway)

Do you prefer to read books in a particular language, or do you prefer them in the language they were originally written in?
Written in, if it is Russian, English, or French; otherwise, Russian or English. I can read other languages (in my list, from German down, getting worse and worse), but "can" isn't really what it takes to enjoy literature

What is your favorite holiday?

May 9, the day of Victory over Fascism.

Beer, wine, or liquor?
Liquor, and very little. Wine only if very sweet (I know it's a shame, but you see, I'm a bear...); beer only if very thirsty.

Why a bear instead of any other animal? Were you just born that way? :D
Precisely! Sometimes I ask myself the same question: why a bear, of all animals? I could have been a graceful enigmatic Cat; that everyone's favorite, Dog; a splendid Tiger shining bright; but one can't help what one is.

If you could only recommend one book, what would it be?

Dark or milk chocolate?

Wild or white rice?

Baths or showers?

If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would choose and what would the dinner be?

What is your all-time favorite food?

ETA: Yay! I finally caught an about the staff profile early enough to ask questions.

ETAA: Haha. I need to go to the grocery store for dinner - as evidenced by my multiple food questions.

If you could only recommend one book, what would it be?
Lucky Jim, by Kingsley Amis, just as a wonderfully good book.
The Ball and the Cross, by G.K.Chesterton, as a wonderfully good book for someone who wants to understand this particular bear.
The Bear Went Over the Mountain, by W.Kotzwinkle, as a wonderfully good book for someone who wants to understand bears in general.
Nicholas Nickleby by Dickens, just because!
(you see, the four occasions are totally different, so I didn't break the rules!)

Dark or milk chocolate?

Milk! or better white! or even pink or that, you now, light green? I know it's not chocolate, it's just some hardened sweet goo, but bears like it!

Wild or white rice?
Wild!

Baths or showers?
Baths, of course... bears are too lazy to stand... foam bath, at that. With salts and stuff, if I can afford them.

If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would choose and what would the dinner be?
Charles Dickens. The dinner will be ordered by him, in accordance to his taste, because the bear won't eat anyway, he will be too excited. If Dickens is busy, then Chesterton.
If it has to be someone alive, it's Salvatore Adamo, my favorite poet.

What is your all-time favorite food?

Can't choose between sweets (like marzipan or glazed fruit) and sea-foods... and a number Russian soups!
(indifferent to meat, though)

ETAA: Haha. I need to go to the grocery store for dinner - as evidenced by my multiple food questions.
Bears understand. Food is all-important. Every bear knows it.

Any ancestors or family members that took part in World War II?
Grandfather was killed in 1941, he was a journalist, but volunteered to infantry at the very beginning of the war.
Uncle was a war pilot (bomber), lots of medals including really big ones; fought during the whole war; died a few years ago.
Aunt - ditto, only a fighter, not a bomber. I adored her.
Her husband, a fighter, died when I was small, I hardly remember him, but I know he was great, too.
My wife's grandfather, died before we met, but fought the whole war, too. While my uncle and aunt with her husband fought German pilots in the sky over Berlin, my wife's Grandpa came there in his tank.

Who is your favorite author?
Dickens

Would you describe to us what a perfect romantic evening would be like for you.
the problem is, whenever any traditional constituents of a romantic evening appear, the bear starts giggling. You have to be serious to enjoy a romantic evening, and no bear can stay serious for long; and bearwives can't be serious at all! So, when we are together, no romantic evening is possible, we'd ruin it with silly jokes and giggling.

Do you like to dance?
I absolutely adore it! I can even dance flamenco. I don't think I could do that now, having some bone/joints problems (appeared only recently, together with everything else I complained about), but when I can, I love it!

How tall are you?
6 ft exactly

What do you prefer to drink for breakfast in the morning?
Always coffee, preferably with cream.

Do you visit all the fabulos places you sent me photos of?
yes, I go to the center of the city as often as I can. Luckily, my Mom lives there (Vassilievsky Island, or maybe it was called Basli's in that book), only two steps away from that beautiful Point with the Rostrum Columns and all.

What is your absolute favorite meal?
I have already tried to answer this question, and it's so difficult for a bear! Candy and cake come to mind immediately... but then there's all those Russian soups, and then seafoods, too!

Besides in the library have you ever seen a ghost?
Yes.

Do you have a green thumb, or are you a plant killer?
Neither. My mother has a real green thumb. I love only flowers (not those green things in pots people usually grow on their window sills), and I don't think I could ever grow one.

What is the best candy for you?
Marzipan, only without any trace of chocolate (or peanut, god forbid... confectioners sometimes have weird ideas of what marzipan is. Well, it is made of almonds, not any other nuts!); glazed fruit; fudge (butterscotch or run&raisins or clotted cream)

Why Japanese?
Because I am an old Japanophile, look at my Member Title!

Do you own a kimono?
Yes, a number, I always wear them when at home. Well, not real kimonos, of course, but, well... kimonoids.

What's your favourite place/s in London and Paris?
In London, St.Catherine's Docks, Queen Mary's Garden in Regent's Park, the City around St.Paul's, and all those little closes at the Inns and around the Temple.

In Paris, Canal Saint-Martin, l'Ile Saint-Louis, the square at Saint-Sulpice, the whole of Quartier Latin, and the whole walk from St.Medard up la rue Mouffetard, across Contrescarpe, and then east to Jardin des Plantes.

What's the most sensible piece of advice you've ever been given?
to have a whole set of dentures; advice was given by my mother based on her own experience and put an end to a few decades of nightmare

What is your favourite colour?
Coral red.

I remember your arriving at .net, how did you find it in the first place?
in a backassward way. I suddenly found out that volumes 5 through 7 were out long ago. I got restless and tried to find either text, or anything about it, in the Internet, with which I had never had any previous relations except email. I didn't even notice there were forums at .net, I registered to play the trivia (Internes holds lots of temptations for the inexperienced). Then I clicked on "Forums" link just our of curiosity and because I had begun to spy some mistakes in the trivia, so was losing interest and needed some new entertainment.
Entertainment my ass... that was the end of my whole previous life and the beginning of an entirely new one...

What's your favourite film?
It's a Wonderful Life

no, there's no tradition of middle names here

I would think a bear like yourself would love the Rocky Mountains! Have you ever been to Canada?
no... and I am afraid I am rather an urban bear... I would love to go to Canada, but not for any mountains - only to see you!

WHat is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you?
There's been a lot. Here's one:
When a friend of mine was getting married, I was invited to the wedding party, but I hadn't previously seen the bride. And that friend, you see, is very short, almost a midget (although not quite). So when I came in... oh Lord, those cultural differences again. You see, it wasn't customary, especially not among educated circles, to celebrate weddings in any big way (there was no money etc), so it was always very informal, and took place in someones apartment, if anybody had one... and our apartments are very small... well, so I rang the bell, and the door was opened by a whole bunch of girls who were teeming there, for the lack of other place... so I (naturally, it seemed to me) handed my bouquet to the smallest of them and started mumbling my congratulations, when the real bride appeared and claimed the bouquet and the congrats and all. She was of quite normal height... very, very embarassing indeed. The above illustrate that old joke about assuming, doesn't it?

What is your favorite article of clothing and why?

My T-shirt with three cats on it. Because they look just like bears! I'll post their picture later.
And, of course, those famous old winter boots I wore for ten years... glued and re-glued... now they are replaced, but not thrown away, of course, they enjoy their honorable retirement!

Who is your hero?
Vladimir Vyssotsky
Simon Wiesenthal
quite a long list of our Catholic saints. There are such amazing stories and such extraordinary people, from St.Laurence and St.George to the anti-fascist martyrs.

What is your favorite instrument to play and why?
guitar, because it's the only I can play half-decent

What kind of music do you listen to when you want to unwind?
I never listen to any music for relaxation, only read books. Music impresses me too deep. I usually listen to classics (Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chaikovsky), or French chanson (Adamo, Brel, Piaf, Brassens), but never for relaxation.

How did you and Helen meet and how long have you been married?
She studied together with that Alexander who lives in London now: math, IT, all that. We became friends, and it was all totally When Harry Met Sally for years. Luckily, we realized the truth at last, and will have been married for 18 years come December.

thank you for all you do around here!

Do you know your father? How is your relationship with him?
yes, I found him after the Communist regime collapsed. I saw him, satisfied myself as to what he is like, and that was quite enough.

If not, do you regret not knowing him?
No.

Planning on having any cubs?
No... we're afraid we might have human babies, and we are not too fond of them, either of us. Like Daghain said, if they could appear already at the age of six, it might be considered.

Favorite flower?
rose!!! Coral red, orange-y, tea, or yellow; then white; only then red and pink. Tulips, too, mainly yellow, but all other colors will do!

Favorite "down time" thing to do?
reading, of course...

Do you like honey? Or just eat it cause you're a bear?
I like honey, although am not crazy about it. You see, bears are famous for liking honey mainly because normally they have only limited, if any, access to other sweets.

Do you have any desire to visit the states?
Yes, to see my .com friends! http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif
Otherwise, I have to confess, it would be rather low on my list of priorities. I afraid it is not feasible anyway - I can never afford it, and even if I could, it's almost impossible to get a visa.

P.S. I don't know your favorite flowers, either! What are they?

I read everything by King ever since The Dead Zone was published in a Soviet magazine, at the beginning of the 80s. I didn't know any English at that time, so it was the only King novel I read in Russian (I re-read it in English since, quite a few times); then I learned English, and read all King within reach; then Alexander went to live in England and started bringing me King books if he could find them cheap, so The Dark Tower was sooner or later inevitable.

if you could change one thing in your life what would it be?
my present health condition

you mentioned that once you were an atheist. i know that now you believe in god; how and when did that change?
if nothing happens, I will start posting in our Religion thread since September. I have cowardly avoided it for years, but I can't any longer; I owe it to my God and his Saints and to myself. The story is too long anyway to answer it in one single post; the primary reasons were of intellectual nature (the problem of the knowability and independent existence of the world).

do you believe in second chances?
Of course. Second, third, and so one, till death; giving up on oneself is cowardice, and giving up on someone else is ignoble.

do you believe in miracles?
Definitely, absolutely YES.

Who is Vladimir Vyssotsky?
It is our greatest poet, he died in 1980. He sang his poems to the guitar, but I wouldn't call him singer-songwriter, because, although his performance was great, absolutely unique, and he was an outstanding theater/cinama actor, too, he was a Poet first and foremost, the best I know although God as my witness, I've loved poetry since a very little cub and would have audacity to say I know what I am talking about.
What he did to our people was incomparable to anything I know in the cultural history of mankind: he told us the truth about ourselves, and in those twilight years of the late Socialism helped us to remain people, to preserve our dignity and not to let die that flame that is inside every soul however hard the authorities want to smother it.

Grrr, I do so wish you could understand Russian!

How long have you been teaching?
Always. There are such people whom God creates teachers: as soon as they learn their ABC, or how to model play-dough, they have to find someone who hasn't learned it yet and pass their knowledge/skills on - Nikolett would understand. I have been teaching for money a little more than twenty years by now.

If you could visit any one place you haven't, where would you go?

What is your favorite poem?

Poetry that sounds:
in Russian, Monument, by Vladimir Vyssotsky
in French, it's Mourir dans tes bras by Salvatore Adamo (another singer-songwriter, but actually a Poet par exellence)
in English, A Simple Twist of Fate by Dylan
Poetry that is on paper:

in French, Le Grand Testament, by Francois Villon
in English, The Vampire, by Kipling

What's your favourite grammar to teach?
To the beginners - the Passive Voice, of course! It opens such new horizons, and it's great to see how the students' jaws drop when they finally realize what a Brave New World the Passive Voice opens to us.

On higher levels - anything. It's fun to teach any grammar when students already speak fluently.

Do you have favourite students or do you love them the same way?
Certainly I have favorites. I don't believe in loving everyone equally; I generally don't believe in equality. They are all different, and I feel about all them differently.

Do you sometimes go to drink with your students?
We don't go, we just bring a bottle to class, and drink it! Of course, quite often.

How old was your youngest and oldest student?
The youngest was 15, the oldest 61.

Who was your first love?
A girl I went to school with. A beautiful, bright, smart, all that girl, but a real vampire...

You might give such short answers to others but not to me, my foxy one. *smiles widely*
So?
How did you fall in love with her?
Did she love you?
Why do you say she was a vampire?
How did it end?
You see, I think it was her who made me a neurotic I am... she and the stupidity with which I was choosing girls exactly like her for years after that. (that's why I didn't recognize Helen as a potential lover - she was way too different)
I fell in love with her because it is compulsory to fall in love when you are someone who reads a lot. When you read, the characters fall in love repeatedly, and it's only natural that you feel it's something you have to do, too.
No, she didn't love me, or anyone else but herself. She found me entertaining, though.
She fed on my suffering. Very trivial, in fact. She said she would call and never did, and I spent hours by the phone, and she stood me up repeatedly, and so on and on. Even now I have those dreams sometimes, that I wait for her, and wait, and wait, and it is snow all around, etc. She graciously let me do things for her, of course, like her math homework and the like.
It ended after school, when we went to different departments of our University, and she just flatly refused to see me again. You see, hers was a department where people like children of Party leaders and such other people studied, and having a friend like me, with my long hair and guitar and wanderings and dubious talks wasn't quite safe for her career; also, there being no math where she studied, she didn' t need my help any longer. I was close to killing myself then, and didn't only thanks to my friends' support.

Are there no faithful translations?

No! you see, there are three main kinds of poetry (as I see it), and their combinations. One is rational, logical and coherent; it tells stories, or develops ideas, philosophical concepts, etc; some great revelations are made that way. Another is beautiful, confusing, dreamlike, inspirational, abandoning in metaphores and visions and images, coming from the more asounding leverls of the Tower; and the other is sent directly from God, with words put the way you feel that's the only way they can be put, so perfectly natural, as though nobody wrote it but this line always existed by itself in eternity... what I would call Absolute poetry. Well, Vyssotsky was Rational (which can be translated) - and Absolute; and that's what can't be translated at all.

Oh, I understand. I did mean formally and professionally, but yes, people are born to teach. :)
formally - I am afraid, never... I am not affiliated with any institution, I don't advertise (my students bring other students) or have any documents at all.

Brice: I tried to look for some Vyssotsky on YouTube, but, of course, there are only amateurish recordings, - all Soviet people knew his songs, and had lots of magnet tapes, and exchanged them and re-recorded them for each other... but they were never officially released (with very few exceptions), nor were his poems published when he was alive (he died at the age of 42)

What is your most treasured possesion?
my bears - teddies and little figurines
my small, but growing collection of rosaries
ditto of little stone (jade, carnelian etc) animals
ditto of my rings (jade, carnelian etc)
the mother-of-pearl extinguisher I brought from England (the story will be posted later)
everything I ever was given by my friends, here or in the so-called real life

What (if anything) can you not forgive?
betrayal

What is the easiest way to make you smile?

showing me a cute bear! (or its brother, cat, or anyone bearlike, wombat or groundhog etc)
in fact, any mention of a bear or his ears or his paws or his tail will do the trick!

Hello my ursine friend.

Let us speak of your musical interests.

You mentioned that you play several instruments. I already knew from previous conversations that you play guitar...

What others do you play?
Of all the instruments you play, which is your favorite? Why?
Of the instruments you do not play, which would you most like to learn?
What is your favorite song/piece to play?
What song/piece do you most wish you could play?
What is the first song you learned to play on the guitar?
Who are some musicians that inspire you to play?

Thanks for taking the time to share this info about yourself, and thanks for always being such a great person/bear to speak with. You make me wish I knew more about the country from which much of family originates. :)

You mentioned that you play several instruments. I already knew from previous conversations that you play guitar...

What others do you play?
I play the piano (passably), the recorder (abominably, but it's not only me - the timbre of those woods seldom makes them acceptable for human ear when played solo, and I've lately had no opportunity to play with anyone else), and the accordion (atrociously)

Of all the instruments you play, which is your favorite? Why?
It would be piano if I could get a little better; but to get a little better I would have to practice, and I have had no access to piano for decades by now... so it's the guitar, and only because I can practice sometimes.

Of the instruments you do not play, which would you most like to learn? Piano, to play well! of those I don't play at all, it's cello.

What is your favorite song/piece to play?
I am only a poor instrumentalist anyway, I play mostly to accompany my singing... mostly French chansons. I also play a lot of Dylan (and sing, too... recomforting myself with the thought that his voice isn't exactly fit for opera, either).

What song/piece do you most wish you could play?
Rain Song, and some other stuff by Led Zeppelin. I do play it, but not too well. Flamenco, too - I play it, also, but hideously. I am beginning to think I could do with a lesson or two, maybe on DVD or something.

What is the first song you learned to play on the guitar?
Chanson pour l'Auvergnat, by Georges Brassens.
From among songs in English, it was Tomorrow is a Long Time, by Dylan (surprise, surprise!), and then some traditionals.

Who are some musicians that inspire you to play?
I am somewhat ashamed to confess it to a musician, but I am almost never inspired by music, always by lyrics... you already know that bears are 100% verbal animals! One of the few exceptions would be Led Zeppelin whom I love and attempt to play inspite of their lyrics being atrociously poor.

I'm right with you on that one. I can play very little on the piano and would love to learn more but that would require having a piano.

Rain Song, and some other stuff by Led Zeppelin. I do play it, but not too well. ...I am beginning to think I could do with a lesson or two, maybe on DVD or something.

Excellent choice. I was so pleased with myself when I learned how to play that one. It's very rewarding. As far as lessons go, there are any number of good ones out there on the internet. If you are willing to wade through some crap on YouTube you can find some valuable lessons among the muck and mire.

From among songs in English, it was Tomorrow is a Long Time, by Dylan (surprise, surprise!)...

Dylan made it into my early songlist as well. "She Belongs to Me" was among the first handful of songs I remember learning.

There's no shame there. There is much to lyrical content that can be inspiring (especially when one listens to songwriters like Dylan and Waits). I also agree with you that Zeppelin offers much more musically than lyrically (and I love Hobbits!). Jimmy Page is a riff-writing machine and I have been trying to learn almost all of them. The day I figured out how to play "Moby Dick" was one of the most rewarding days in my electric-guitar playing life.

Waits is the man. With all due respect to Dylan (and I have a ton of it for him) Waits is at the top of my list of great songwriters. The lyrical content is fantastic and the music is often beyond description. He paints pictures with the music that perfectly set the scene for the worlds in which his songs take place. Even his instrumental songs tell me entire stories. Many of them are fun to play as well. :)

Jean, this thread is absolutely fabulous!
Was your grandmother born under tsar Alexander II's reign? In which case: do you have any paintings or photographs of what it really looked like?
Did she teach you French or was it your mother? If that was your mother, she must really like the language to teach it to you when she's been abandoned by your father...
Was living under communism really as horrible/marvellous as we're told here in books and by politicians? I mean, Sartre loved communism and after going to Russia to see what it really was like, he didn't seem to change his opinion much, did he? But we're mostly told it was a horrible period in Eastern Europe history, so which of these two assumptions is closest to what you've lived?

What is your favourite mode of transport?
London double-decker!!!

Where is your favourite place to read?
in bed, where else?

I'm glad you have your coffee with cream, thats how I have mine...do you take sugar too? How many?
I normally have coffee in the morning, without anything else, as a pick-me-up, so it's just coffee and cream (or milk); if I happen to have coffee later at day, it depends on what I have it with. If something sweet, like cookies, then coffee is without sugar, but if it's a sandwich, then I love my coffee sweet... very, very sweet, the sweeter the better! and thick and fat!!! ("That was because he was a bear." - W.Kotzwinkle)

What's your favourite girls name? Boy's name?
Anne (Anna), just because it is so beautiful. The first syllable in Russian would be like in French, not like in English.
Mikhail (that's what they call the bear here, remember?)

Rose. The color is important, too: my very favorite is coral, or any red-going-to-orange; then orange, yellow, tea, and white. I love pink and red roses a little less, but love them anyway, of course.
Tulip. The same color gradation.

Was your grandmother born under tsar Alexander II's reign?
No, of course not! how old would that make me? She was born in 1902, it's Nicholas II.

In which case: do you have any paintings or photographs of what it really looked like?
She destroyed or lost almost everything, very little survived through the revolution, the war, and the whole Communist period.

Did she teach you French or was it your mother?
She didn't really teach me, we just spoke French at home part of the time every day. It was a tradition of Russian noble families, one of those few my Grandmother kept.

Neither. It wasn't marvelous - no society is - and it was just as horrible as any other society, only, you know, differently horrible. There were good and bad things alike. If I don't die within next year or two, which I am not planning on doing, I will post extensive memoirs in T/Back Lane.

As far as Sartre and his delusions are concerned, I think you know no worse than I do what he and his gang really were, those perfect bourgeois playing intellectual revolutionaires only because they felt comfortably certain that they would never be able to carry it out in practice and face the consequences.

Your story about meeting your wife is really beautiful.

Jean do you remember your dreams when you awake?
Yes. Later on I start confusing them with what actually took place in the so-called reality. I also have a consistent life in those dreams, very different from my "waking" life, but coherent enough to let me remember the events of past dreams in the middle of a new one. I never have lucid dreams, though, I think I go too far under, or maybe I travel too far away.

Do you dream in color?
Always.

Have you ever flown in your dreams?
Yes, and, as a rule, I wonder how easy it proved to be and why I didn't thought of doing it before if it is so easy.

Have you ever had your dream come true?
No, they have too little to do with the "reality" in which I live in daytime.

I don't know if it is interesting... but I got to share it, because it drives me somewhat crazy. In those consistent dreams, there are three cities; those dreams' action always takes place in one or another of them. I know they are St.Petersburg, Paris, and London, although they have very little to do with their prototypes. The topography of those cities never changes. I always know where I am, and where what is in those cities; it is then that I remember what happened in this very city before, in other dreams. I think it doesn't speak very well of the bear's mental health... but it is so interesting! pity I don't always remember everything in all details.

No doubt Linda. St Pete, Florida is a very cool place, but I imagine it pales in comparison to the real St. Petersburg.

Having been to both, this statement couldn't be more true.

Also, about the visa thing...when we were in St. Petersburg, one of our guides was this super sweet girl named Daria. She spoke perfect English that barely had an accent. Actually, I thought she was an American, but I later found out she had lived in Russia her entire life. Anyhoo, she was a fashion student and she said her dream was to go to New York City and work as a cashier in a boutique. Well, she has applied for a visa numerous times and has been rejected each time. She said the U.S embassy had basically told her that they didn't believe someone would want to come to the U.S. to be a "lowly cashier" so to speak. I thought that was super crappy.

But really now, Jean, this thread is so interesting.

A few more questions:

I know you love all bears, but if you had to pick, what type is your favorite?

Do you believe in astrology?

and now for some questions:

how artistic would you say you are?
why are bears so entranced by sweets?
do you make friends easily?
is there a guaranteed way for someone to be dropped from your "friends list"?
which language are you most comfortable speaking?
is it hard to teach english?
why do so many languages have male/female words? say, for example that this table is female in some language. what if is doesn't want to be female? what if it wants to be a male table? what then?

What is the most important quality in a person to you, and why?
I can't really find an English word which would fully convey the meaning of the Russian word порядочность - human decency? close to notions of both nobility of soul and personal loyalty.

Yes; and their total inability or unwillingness to believe that someone might love their country and not want to leave it. A huge number of people I know couldn't go to the USA as tourists, or to their friends, or even relatives, because they couldn't provide proofs that they were not going to emigrate.

I know you love all bears, but if you had to pick, what type is your favorite?
Grizzly and panda... and the polar bear... and all the rest of them!

Do you believe in astrology?
No, not at all.

Do you like to swim?
oh... yes and no. I like the process, but I don't like the places. I never go to the swimming pool, because it smells desinfectant and then I can't stand the idea of a public shower. The sea here is cold and dirty, and, worst of all, shallow, so I never swim there, either. And I never go to sea-side, because if I go anywhere, I'd rather go to a city, like Paris or London - I haven't been to any resort since I was a small cub, and I don't think I ever going to. Sometimes I went with a friend to some lake deep in the dark forest, with nobody around to foul it, and swam there, but he now has family and kids and I can't take him away from them any longer; and my other friends have no cars.

no, it won't be tough! I will save it, and all those marzipan bears, too!

how artistic would you say you are?
very, I believe, maybe too much so for my own good in my every-day life, but it is important for teaching. I have to keep people who have been working hard all day - and have families waiting for them at home - entertained for four hours round, and I have to make them talk about all kind of things, so I have to be funny and entertaining and play dozens of different roles at every class.

why are bears so entranced by sweets?
Because bears never really grow up. They remain kids for all their lives; they may become old, but never adult.

do you make friends easily?
It depends on the meaning of the word. In Russian, we use the word "friend" (друг) only to mean a very specific kind of relationship: it means you two mean everything for each other, and share everything, and are always ready to help, and that relationship you have is, within our traditional (maybe even Soviet more than Russian) system of values, above all else. Thus, a person rarely has more than one friend; more often none. I have three, and it's an enourmous number; but I haven't made friends in this meaning of the world in the so-called real life since primary school.

There are other words, closer in meaning to the meaning this word means in English; in this sense, I make friends very easily, maybe because I like people. Another thing is that I am by nature very unsociable, and would go to great lengths to avoid any company, but it's not because I feel uncomfortable with people (I feel perfectly comfortable), but because I have such a lot of things like thoughts to think, forums to write in, books to read, music to listen to, etc, which I can do only alone, that I'd really much rather be alone. The very character of my jobs doesn't let me to be alone, so, since I have to be with people anyway, I thought I'd better learn to derive some pleasure from it. Most of my students are my very good friends in that second sense of the world.

is there a guaranteed way for someone to be dropped from your "friends list"?
Only betrayal.

which language are you most comfortable speaking?
Russian, of course, it's the closest to Ursine; then English.

is it hard to teach english?
It's not hard to teach anything, it's great fun! But, of course, English is the easiest to teach to adults, because there's nothing students have to learn by heart (unlike in French, for example, with its verbs)

why do so many languages have male/female words? say, for example that this table is female in some language. what if is doesn't want to be female? what if it wants to be a male table? what then?
Oh, it's an easy one. Female tables are always born in France or Italy; male tables in Russia or Germany; those who prefer to stay away from gender problems choose English-speaking countries.

Christian Saints, Joan of Arc to name just one
Edith Piaf

Same question ..what man.
maerlyn asked me who my heroes were, and I answered:

Vladimir Vyssotsky
Simon Wiesenthal
quite a long list of our Catholic saints. There are such amazing stories and such extraordinary people, from St.Laurence and St.George to the anti-fascist martyrs.

in terms of just "thinking most highly of", I could add to that list all my friends; Alain Delon (in my avatar), whom I respect immensely as a person inspite of all slander he's been victim of; Jacques Brel and Salvatore Adamo, French poets and awesome personalities; Bob Dylan; Steve Irwin; Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon King; in fact, I could go on with that list, because there's a lot of people, both men and women, whom I think most highly of.

Ricard is fine. Pernaud is possible, too.
Then we have some prawns, in garlic sauce; as a second starter (why not? tapas style) we'll have eggplant rolls (made of very thin slices of fried eggplant, with cheese and garlic); as a third, deep-fried calamari rings.
Then, soup. It may be borshch (Russian beet soup, eaten very hot with lots of garlic and sour cream)... or it may be wild mushroom soup (I think I posted recipe somewhere), served like they do in some Jewish places, inside a loaf of rye bread.
Then we have duck. The recipe may be Chinese, Thai, or French (it's canard confit, then).
Dessert will be panna cotta; or maybe creme-caramelle; creme-brulee isn't to be entirely ruled out, either. One of those, anyway... or two... or, preferably, the three. All that with a lot of tea (green; jasmine or lothus), and a little glass of Cointreau.
Cheese would be welcome... Gruyere would do perfectly fine.

Collecting isn't really the correct word, I don't in fact collect anything, like, you know, collectors do; I just like to have them around, they are beautiful. Mmmm, that wild mushroom soup served inside the rye bread sounds amazing!

I love gruyere too. I buy a small squash (one of the round ones, but nowhere near as big as a pumpkin) and hollow out the seeds, stuff it with gruyere and pour in cream. Then you pop its little lid back on and bake until soft enough to eat...you can eat the creamy cheese out of it as if it were a bowl

What's your earliest memory?
I think it's me being sick and my mother reading Winnie-the-Pooh to me. I must have been very small because in all my other memories I already could read, and preferred it to listening.

Can you remember your first dream?
No, I think not, but I can remember the first dream that impressed me greatly. I know I didn't go so school then, so I must have been about five... I had just read Le Petit Prince, and I dreamed of him, - in that dream Mother and me were in a bookstore... I realize now that we didn't even have that kind of bookstores in the Soviet Union, it was a typically European one, the type I saw more than twenty years later than that dream), and it has a basement where a staircase leads, with those wide ancient banisters (I couldn't have possibly seen those, either... maybe in books, of course... we didn't even have a TV set...) and everything there, downstairs, is flooded by sunlight, although it is below ground and I know it... and he, Little Prince, is standing there at the bottom of the stairs, and I want to go to him, but am distracted (like, I should go back to mother? anyway, it's clearly a motif of duty), and when I am back to that place, I can't find it. Then, in that dream, I know that I have been looking through various shops (clear image of books heaping on the floor), but in vain, because it's too late and I didn't profit the only chance. I've had similar dreams very often since them, about a wonderful beautiful place where I don't go because duty makes me go elsewhere, and then I can't find it.

I can also remember my first nightmare, but I'd rather not dwell upon it now.

What makes your heart ache, not with sadness but with beauty?
a lot of things; mostly flowers or beautiful architecture... especially when combined - a garden in an old town, a church garden, a cemetry; flowers and stones.

What's your favorite time of day and why?
Morning, because it still makes me hope. Those hopes are rarely fulfilled... and morning lost half its beauty since I haven't smoked... but still, still.

Have you ever heard anyone speaking Portuguese? It sounds remarkably like Russian (to my untrained ear, anyway).
Well yes, there is some similarity in phonetics. It would be easier traceable for me if I Russian wasn't my native language, of course.

Imagine your house is on fire (and everyone in it, aside from yourself, is safely elsewhere when it happens). You only have time enough to grab one thing and safely remove yourself from danger.
What is it?
Frankly, I don't want to imagine anything of the kind. I have so little, but all I have is really precious for me, and has only sentimental value, which is the value that can't ever be restored. I think I would grab any bears within reach, because they are more alive than my stones, or even my "objects Catholiques" that are, after all, only beautiful symbols - I know Mary and all Saints of Heaven would understand; or books, which I dearly love but which can be restored. But I would spend the rest of my life mourning those small nothings that are presents from my friends and family, or that reminded from some events, or places, or the like. I hope and pray nothing like that would ever happen.

Tiffany
08-21-2008, 11:27 AM
In your own time, Jean. :)

Jean
08-22-2008, 01:41 AM
what do you treasure?
Friendship, above all else. I think of my wife as a friends rather than of a spouse, lover, or that fashionable mongrel, "significant other".

Also, it is those small useless things... the only that really matter... like flowers or dolls or candlesticks... like forgotten rituals and ridiculous conventions... that which is of no use, but holds our culture on its fragile ephemeral shoulders... makes life bearable, or, sometimes, even enjoyable... correct spelling and rhyming poetry and tasteful clothing and fine art of writing letters and giving flowers to women just because they are women, and all that which is of no practical value...

And bears, of course bears, toujours bears and all their little brothers...

Do you hold grudges?

That's a difficult one. I don't - I mean, I never hold it against someone, or think badly of someone, or plot revenge... in fact, I don't think I have ever committed any act of revenge or was even seriously contemplating one... though theoretically I am inclined to believe in revenge... in a word, if someone does me harm he may rest assured no consequences will ensue (alas). On the other hand, God cursed me with the worst memory possible - I remember everything - and, along with remembering all good things, I remember all bad ones, too, and, what's even worse, the feeling of beeing deeply hurt doesn't subside with time... I can wake up in the night remembering something someone said or did to me decades ago, and think of it and get depressed all over again as if it only just happened. In fact, it is unbearable... it makes life hard, and I am only happy I don't let it influence me in my actions and attitudes: I know it's only me and my sick heart.

When you daydream, what do you find yourself dreaming about? As a rule, it is my unwritten stories.

This also happens to me, for no apparent reason, I can recall someone /thing at the oddest time ( thinking of a childhood friend say) in the shower or at night as you sugest.
With total recall, it is unnerving at times, and does hurt the heart. (((hug))) this brings me to my question:

Do you believe in past lives, or put creadence to de'javu and other mental quirks as being relevent in anyway, or do you see them as coincidence and nothing more?
I certainly do not believe in past lives, nor am inclined to put too much down to coincidence. I am sure that the created world works in ways not yet discovered, and as long as history of mankind develops, we are going to learn more and more about it - and not only, or not even mainly, by the means of science. I believe the Dark Tower vision of Sai King is one of those important revelations that give a lot of food for thought.

how has your life changed since you've been affliated with this site?
It is a whole new life, given to me in addition to that other one.

if you knew you only had one week left to live what would you do with it?
I would go to London and spend that week between Queen Mary's Rosegarden and Corpus Christi church on Maiden Lane.

when people tell you how much you mean to them do you really believe them?
I am so astonished every time! first of all I don't believe, then I remind myself that such a good person wouldn't lie to me... and my old bearheart is filled with joy!

how often do you pray?
throughout the day; also, I pray the whole big rosary circle every night. It takes about a half hour, and it is really happy and beautiful half-hour! (especially now in summer that I can place all my candles and stuff on the balcony. Won't be such fun in winter, but I will find a way.)

how often do you attend church services?
oops... only when I am abroad. Then I go to church every day, and to Mass as often as it doesn't interfere with other things, like my friends' plans. You know, in small towns like Norwich they give communion with actual wine!

I really, really got to find an accessible church here...

do you find it difficult to be a catholic living in russia?
No, - in fact, easier than it would be in many other countries. We are experiencing a religious revival here: the decades of militant atheism, when people were killed (in the 20s), went to prison and could be executed (in the 30s through 50s) or just were infringed in all their rights, - with going to prison not out of the question, either (60s through 80s) - for their faith, taught us tolerance and respect to religious views. Here at least it is not fashionable to point and laugh at Christians, whatever the denomination.

do you enjoy learning about other religions?
why, of course. I enjoy learning about anything anthropological (as opposed to scientific).

if you could only eat one type of sweet for the rest of your life (and it's not marzipan) what would it be?
not marzipan?
::alarmed::
why not marzipan???

ok, then candied fruit, and candied peel...

if you had to eat only vegetables for the rest of your life what would you choose?
cooked: squash and his brother, eggplant; cabbage; beet
raw: radish (red, black, or horse); avocado (or is it fruit?); green onion; cabbage

and garlic, garlic, garlic!!!!
and potatoes, potatoes, potatoes!!!

of course, none of it (with the exception of avocado) makes sense without Russian rye bread and smetana (our sounr cream)

You said you were a Japanophile (I guess you're not sore about the 1904 war. For some reason, I thought bears held grudges...or is that elephants) Does this extend to Japanese cuisine? If so what is your favorite Japanese dish? Do you enjoy eel? How does sushi rank on your list of favorites? (I'm guessing you like salmon sushi the most if you like it at all ;) )

You said you were a Japanophile (I guess you're not sore about the 1904 war. For some reason, I thought bears held grudges...or is that elephants)
that war was Nicholas II private act of idiocy, so I don't hold it against Japan; but I can hardly forgive what they did during World War Two (especially to their Chinese prisoners). Every country has a lousy, foul, disgusting history, it's their culture bears normally love about a country - if anything - not their political history.

Does this extend to Japanese cuisine?
yes, yes!!!
::jumps up and down with mouth wide open and paws in doglike "begging" position::
::realizes it was a question, not an offer::
::lands heavily, closes mouth, pretends to just have been waving paws for exercise::

If so what is your favorite Japanese dish?
All of them - at least of those I've tasted, and it's quite a lot of very varied stuff. Not only sushi or sashimi, but also those soups (miso! bears love), and all tempura dishes, and noodles, and yakitori...

Do you enjoy eel?
I adore eel.

How does sushi rank on your list of favorites? (I'm guessing you like salmon sushi the most if you like it at all ;) )
no, it's too habitual for a bear (yes, we make those queues for them on Alaska rivers' rapids, but mostly for the sake of tradition. Bears are partial to rituals.) It's eel that is the absolute number one!

if you could change one thing in world history what would it be?
The Great Motherfucking Russian Revolution of 1917. I would have gladly strangled Vladimir Ulianov (not Lenin yet) in his cradle with my paws. Or Karl Marx. Or better both.

do you believe in time paradoxes? (paradoxi?)
I am not really fond of paradoxes at all. Too often they come from poor wording, logical mistakes, wrong approaches and lack of knowledge; most often, what is considered a paradox is a set of banalities phrased the way they would impress immature minds (often used by young men while talking up young girls). As far as time paradoxes are concerned, I believe that time-travel is possible, but every time anyone goes back in time he creates an alternative universe, thus eliminating paradox. There's a thread where we were discussing that.

do you believe in time travel?
I don't think it's really a matter of belief.

if you could go back in time and kill hitler would you?
See The Dead Zone. Yes, I would, for merely egoistic reasons: if I knew I could and I hadn't done it, I would never sleep quietly again.

do you think it would have any negative repercussions (if your answer is yes)?
No. Unfortunately, as I said, it won't change one single shit for the universe where we are now. My action would be useless, but I couldn't stop myself anyway.

if you could change one thing about your present life circumstances other than your health (cause you already said that) what would you change?
I would introduce some possibility to earn money without having to forget the face of my father (figuratively, of course, and symbolically speaking...). Now in my country it is impossible, and since I have no starving babies on my hands, I prefer having no money.

do you believe in the saints? if so, do you believe that lighting candles to them and having devotional places for them is a form of idolatry?
oh come on, you are kidding me. You know, of course, that it is the old Catholic vs. Protestant controversy; you also know what idolatry is. Saints are people "virtuous to heroic degree"; people about whom we firmly believe that they are already in Heaven and can intercede for us. They also make us feel we are part of long cultural tradition, brining all countries and eras close to you, so you begin to understand what it was like long ago and far away (or not so long and far), and that people who lived there are alive and are your friends; you don't live only in here and now, you are part of historic continuity, you are a direct heir or the tradition created and maintained by all those wonderful people - and that is what prevents the world from moving on. In the darkest hours of my life I address Anthony of Padua, or Therese of Lisieux, or Joan of Arc, or St.Joseph, or St. Martha, or St.George... and hope they will help me, - and they never let me down. But they help me through God's will alone, and it's God to whom we all pray: "through Christ our Lord, amen".

did you choose catholicism or did it choose you?
Both. That was the only Christian determination that intellectually, ethically, historically, culturally, and aesthetically is exactly what I'd been looking for so long.

Amazing how much we have in common Jean.

As far as the paper thing...when I was a kid, my mom would take us shopping and we had such small car that I had to hold the paper sacks on my lap. I was so short, they would go in my face and mouth...and the smell of the paper was horrible.

The whole thing was horrible and to this day, I can't get paper anywhere near my mouth or face and just being around it gives me the willies.

no. i wasn't kidding. :(
i'm jewish. and while i did a brief overview of the world's major religions in college (many, many years ago) i don't have an in-depth knowledge of them. and although i continue to study other religions, there are things about them that i don't understand and therefore ask questions about when presented the opportunity. i didn't know there was a catholic vs. protestant controversary about this. i was thinking more along the lines of old testament teachings with regard to my religion as it compares to catholicism. i'm truly very sorry if i offended you in any way. please accept my apology. i will look up those saints that i'm not familiar with to find out more about them.

in fact, I am happy at the slightest pretext to speak about those I love, be it my friends, or my favorite poets, or Catholic Saints! It's that you mentioned your Jesuite edication once - that's why I thought you were pulling my legs.

i will look up those saints that i'm not familiar with to find out more about them.
I mentioned only a few, and there's thousands - only a little is known about some, but a lot about others, and in the course of all those centuries there have been a whole few hundreds of those with which I feel really deep connection. I think the one who could be most interesting for you is St.Francis of Assisi, who just can't leave any representative of fauna indifferent!

Boxers, indubitably. I love walking long distances (and rather often have to, whether or not I like it), so everything I wear fits the purpose. It was more important when I was younger and actually walked from town to town, but I kept the habit.

Jean,

Wow! I just finished reading this thread from beginning to end and now I really do not have any questions to ask! I do want to state of all the people that post on this message board, you are the one that I would pick if I could only ever meet one person here!!! I mean that sincerely.

You are a very intelligent Bear, sometimes the philosopher, others the caring and just and loving; you can be strong as Shardik and then as simple as Yogi or BooBoo Bear; Have you ever read the Children's books called The Berenstine Bears? You'd fit right in! You are sensitive to all, but demonstrate strong personal convictions about the things you believe in; you are passionate, intelligent and wise beyond means. You do not seem to let your hardships get the best of you! Somewhere back in this thread you said

since I have no starving babies on my hands, I prefer having no money.

That statement alone tells me that you are someone I should aspire to become.

I went to a Hot Air Balloon Festival a few weeks back and have been meaning to post some pictures, in a different thread of course, but felt that these two pictures belong here! They are amazing pictures my friend, just like you are amazing! Enjoy!

What is your favorite season? Why?

I love them all except winter. Spring, because it promises so much, and winter is going away, and I know how corny it all sounds, but the older I get, the more I appreciate all those, you know, first leaves and first flowers and first time out without overcoat.

Summer, because I don't work in summer, and I can travel, and I can walk barefoot, and there are flowers!

The fall, here is why:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/593/medium/IMG_4276.JPG

I took this picture only a week ago... I can't believe it will all be over soon and winter will come...

Do you have a favorite article of clothing?
Well, I never wear a suit; in fact, I don't even have one, or a tie. I am always dressed in jeans and T-shirt/shirt/sweater when not at home; at home, most often in a kimono (as I said before, not a real kimono, of course - a kimonoid).

If you had a pet lion what would you name it?
Beam!!!

How did you learn to play your instruments? Self-taught or tutored?
Self-taught. It was a tradition when I was young - most everyone played the guitar, and passed on whatever they managed to learn, so we learned from each other.

Are you good at math?
Very. I nearly chose math for my university education, but finally pholosophy prevailed (luckily, we had very advanced math there, too. Also, I minored in mathematical logic). It's been some time since I did any serious math, but I think I'll be able to remember it if I have to. I love it.

oh, and do you like classic pooh or disney pooh best?

:couple:

I am not sure what we mean by Classic Pooh; I always mean the original one, from A.A.Milne's book. I've been reading that book as long as I remember myself, first in the brilliant translation by our great children's poet Boris Zahoder, then, when I could, in English (I am afraid I loved the Russian versions of the poems better). I think the American version lost everything there was to the book - Pooh was a poet and a philosopher, and the book is so really lyrical, and Disney cartoon was, like everything by him, way too aggressive and Tom-and-Jerryish for my taste, and for how I imagine Pooh; also, most of the text was lost, and it's the text that matters there. But I love the old classic Russian cartoon, I think it's second best to the book. Here are some parts of it I found on YouTube (in Russian, of course, but if you remember the book, everything should be clear)

YouTube - ’инни-Ÿƒ…

My dear dear friends,

thank you very much, all of you who want to send me something! You can't even guess how much the bear treasures everything he gets from you!

The problem is, I don't know yet what could be the best way.

There is Helen Finkelstein, but. All that is sent will have to be kept at her place, or Alexander's place, and they are both tiny. Moreover, it's Alexander who will have to bring it here, and he has two parents, a brother, brother's wife and their four children, and two more friends to think of - and remember, we're here living in a country to which not only nice presents, but some necessary things, like medicines, have to be brought by those who happen to live in more propitious circumstances. So he has, besides me, ten people to provide for (one of them, as you might remember, being a very sick father who requires lots of stuff), and I just can't burden him with anything extra.

Thus, please, send only small, light things to Helen's address, ok? I think once a year Alexander can bring me a small parcel, if it is small and light. It is important, because otherwise I just won't be able to ask him - not because he won't help me (he will even when he can't), but because it would be indecent of me to expect him to.

Helen Finkelstein
Flat 1,
25 Northdown St

(I will update with St.Petersburg information as soon as my mother finds out what her code is)

I am asking each of you this question today...
Do you believe in ghosts, and/or have you ever seen one?
Yes, and yes.

Yes and yes?? Where are all the details??

Jean
10-08-2008, 01:16 AM
The first "yes" is, I think, obvious. The belief in ghosts fits with the rest of my beliefs; also, there's been some rather long history of ghost sightings throughout the history. As for the second "yes", I am not sure I am ready to give the details.

I fell in love with her because it is compulsory to fall in love when you are someone who reads a lot. When you read, the characters fall in love repeatedly, and it's only natural that you feel it's something you have to do, too.

I can relate with that quite well, I can. And worse, I feel a stupid urge to fall in love with men who read a lot. Most men here just say something like 'Oh, did they write a book from Lord of the Rings movie?' and it annoys me deeply. So no wonder if I faint if I meet a man with bookshelves that are actually FULL of books. In English. Careful I must be.

I can see you're a truly great personality, bearbrother. :) I can only gawp at the size of your soul, it's gigantic! Now, I'd like to ask a few questions.

Have you ever been to Finland? (I haven't been in Russia yet, which really is a BIG shame. One day, I promise!)
What's your favorite word in Russian?
Do you have "an escaping place", where you go when you want to ponder about things and just be?

I haven't been to Finland yet, but I am planning to do so next spring (in March, most likely).

What's your favorite word in Russian?
"меховой" (furry), and all its derivatives. Everything I like is always "меховой".

Do you have "an escaping place", where you go when you want to ponder about things and just be? Oh yes, and I need it quite often. Only it's not a place, it's an activity: walking in a city. It may be St.Petersburg, London, Paris, or any other city, provided it is old. That's why I travel so much. Walking about alone is like getting close to your true self with every step, and the older you are, the more evasive this self is... I am going to post a lot of travel memoirs in TBack when I have a little time, to explain how it works. Thank you for this question.

Warmly welcome! I would recommend visiting Porvoo, a city within an hour from Helsinki. It's just one of those old cities you fall instantly in love with.

Mehovoj. It sounds simply so beautiful. *sigh*

Jean, I wasn't going to spoil the surprise, but I want to tell you that I am going to be drawing a picture specifically for you. I wish I could tell you more, but it is still at least a little bit of a surprise this way.

I have a couple of questions that were not asked, that I am shocked were not asked.

1) Who is your favorite philosopher? Or, alternatively, which philosopher have you found yourself to agree with most?

2) How long have you known you were a bear? If you're anything like me (which I can see we are similar from the answers you've given in this thread), then you've probably always known.

3) Have you ever heard of a band called DeVotchKa or a band called Gogol Bordello? They are two bands which I love very much, but with my taste in everything being so eclectic it's hard to tell if other people I know would like them. You probably would like DeVotchKa, a lot of their music is very pretty, very soothing. Gogol Bordello, on the other hand, is very punk-rock and gypsy. It's very different from anything else I've ever listened to, which is definitely why I like it so much.

4) Someone asked you a question about console video games, and you said you don't know what a console it. A console is a system for playing those games, like a Super Nintendo, an Xbox, a GameCube, or a PlayStation 2. So, I'm re-asking the question in a different wording:
Have you ever played a video game on a gaming system put out by Nintendo, Atari, Sony, Sega, or Microsoft (excluding personal computer)? If so, which one, and what was your favorite game? And if not, have you ever wished you could? Likewise, have you ever played a video game on a hand-held system?

5) Do you actually draw at all? If so, would you ever consider sharing your artwork?

6) Which is your favorite type of cake?

7) Of all of the mythical creatures, which ones do you like most? These can be from any culture, all mythical creatures count.

8) Do you know who Milla Jovovich is, and if so, are you a fan of hers? As a follow-up, if you are a fan of hers, have you heard her music? Personally, I think she is amazing.

9) My mom always says mothers know everything. Do you believe this to be true? (As an after-thought to this question, do you believe in "women's intuition" in the sense that women are generally better able to sense when something is wrong?)

10) Do you keep a journal of any kind? I've done so off and on for the last decade, but it's a series of note books that are falling apart, and half of some of them are now illegible due to writing in pencil instead of pen. But I keep two journals, now. One for me to vent in when I need to do so, and another for me to record my dreams in when I wake up and remember something particularly interesting. I dream in color, but I don't dream like you do. I almost wish I did.

11) You said you like eel - so do I, believe it or not! What is your favorite way to have it prepared? (I love it barbecued!)

12) What is your favorite number?

13) What is your least favorite movie since we entered the new millennium?

14) Aside from walking, what other forms of exercise do you do regularly? (Regardless of if you walk because it's exercise or for any other reasons you may have previously mentioned.) Personally, I go for walks every day, but I also like to do yoga. Even if I'm not good at it.

15) What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage?

16) What is your favorite alcoholic beverage? (I don't drink very often, if at all, but when I do decide to, I love a drink called Coco Crush, which is blue curacao, coconut rum, and pineapple juice. It tastes amazing, and it looks awesome.)

17) Have you ever gotten arrested for anything, ever? (Just because I'm curious. Good people can get arrested and remain good people, I've seen it before.)

18) You said your favorite color is coral red - is it also your favorite color to wear? If not, what is?

19) Of all of the good things that have happened to you in your life, which do you think was the most significant? I only ask this question because when I try to think of my own answer, nothing comes to mind, so I'm curious to see what your answer would be.

20) Of all of the colors you've seen on me in my photographs, which do you think looks best on me? (I'm sorry, I've never asked anybody this question before, but I couldn't help myself - I need to know.)

21) This is the last one in this post, I promise. I've got more, though, if you want me to ask more. Anyhow, of all of the written works I have posted, that you have read, which one do you consider your favorite?

Alright, that's quite a few questions, and certainly good for now. Reading them over, some of them are silly. But there they are, asked for the sake of asking. You don't have to answer any question you don't feel you want or need to. I'll understand. :huglove:

Thank you so much for telling me now!!! It's joy multiplied thousandfold: the joy to have learned about it, the continuous joy of anticipating, and finally the ultimate joy of receiving!

Thank you for the questions, too, they are so interesting - as is everything you do, my love. I'll answer now those which can be answered right away:

2) How long have you known you were a bear? If you're anything like me (which I can see we are similar from the answers you've given in this thread), then you've probably always known.
Of course dragons understand. Always is the right answer. Born that way.

12) What is your favorite number?
13
also, since obviously when, 19

15) What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage?
Green tea, Schweppes, Evervess; formerly, Doctor Pepper.

16) What is your favorite alcoholic beverage? (I don't drink very often, if at all, but when I do decide to, I love a drink called Coco Crush, which is blue curacao, coconut rum, and pineapple juice. It tastes amazing, and it looks awesome.)
Martini (preferably rosso), and sweet strong liqueurs like cointreau.

20) Of all of the colors you've seen on me in my photographs, which do you think looks best on me? (I'm sorry, I've never asked anybody this question before, but I couldn't help myself - I need to know.)
The whole scale from pink to deep night blue, going through magenta, purple, violet, lilac etc. Lilac (more into blue than into violet) is the best. White is not bad, either... don't think you wouldn't look good in anything, to speak the truth, but I always think of you in those colors.

21) This is the last one in this post, I promise. I've got more, though, if you want me to ask more. Anyhow, of all of the written works I have posted, that you have read, which one do you consider your favorite?

I had thought as much. Just like how I knew I was a dragon even before I found out that I was born in that year.

12) What is your favorite number?13
also, since obviously when, 19

Ah, of course. 13 is the same favorite number as my mother, but her's is also 69 because it is the year she was born in.

15) What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage?Green tea, Schweppes, Evervess; formerly, Doctor Pepper.

I love green tea! I love to drink it with honey and/or ginseng, or if no honey is around I like it with brown sugar. Mostly, though, I drink it plain. I used to love Doctor Pepper, too, but I grew out of it a while ago. Carbonated beverages no long suit my taste (but I'll always love root beer).

16) What is your favorite alcoholic beverage? (I don't drink very often, if at all, but when I do decide to, I love a drink called Coco Crush, which is blue curacao, coconut rum, and pineapple juice. Excellent choice! ^_^

Lilac? That always was one of my more favorite shades of blue-purple. I'm glad to know it.

I'll post as many as you would like me to, dear! As fast as you can answer them.

1) Who is your favorite philosopher? Or, alternatively, which philosopher have you found yourself to agree with most?
I have, at least to an extent (a great extent, though) lost interest in philosophy per se; I retain some admiration for Descartes and Hegel whose views I always shared fuller than anyone's, but now I am more and more inclined towards mystics, like Blaise Pascal and Jakob Bhme. My favorite thinker (not a philosopher) at the moment is G.K.Chesterton.

No, I am afraid the answer is no... I play a lot on personal computer, though.

6) Which is your favorite type of cake?

Don't know how to describe it, it's layer cake with sour cream... absolutely fantastic... love all kinds of cake, by the way (chocolate ones less than some others, though)

8 ) Do you know who Milla Jovovich is, and if so, are you a fan of hers? As a follow-up, if you are a fan of hers, have you heard her music? Personally, I think she is amazing.
Alas, I have only seen her in two movies: peacefully slept through The Fifth Element, but was very disappointed by Joan of Arc. Never heard any music by her, but if you like it, I certainly got to find it!

No, I am afraid the answer is no... I play a lot on personal computer, though.

I had figured probably no. What kinds of personal computer games do you play?

6) Which is your favorite type of cake?Don't know how to describe it, it's layer cake with sour cream... absolutely fantastic... love all kinds of cake, by the way (chocolate ones less than some others, though) Oh, that's very interesting. I have never heard of cake made with sour cream before, I will look into it.

8 ) Do you know who Milla Jovovich is, and if so, are you a fan of hers? As a follow-up, if you are a fan of hers, have you heard her music? Personally, I think she is amazing.Alas, I have only seen her in two movies: peacefully slept through The Fifth Element, but was very disappointed by Joan of Arc. Never heard any music by her, but if you like it, I certainly got to find it!

I have never seen Joan of Arc, but I loved The Fifth Element, and she was funny in Zoolander. I also loved her in the Resident Evil movies, and in Ultraviolet, as well as the movie .45.
As for her music, I love her song Flashlight, particularly, but it is all wonderful. She was also always beautiful on the runway, I thought. (She can do it all!)
Some other good songs she did were Holy Fall, Wide Awake, Take me to Mars, and Every Leaf. :rose:

5) Do you actually draw at all? If so, would you ever consider sharing your artwork?

I have found the two I posted: the Festival (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=2778) and The Horn of Eld (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=2453) (there is is, side by side with yours http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bearheart.gif). It's been years, maybe decades, since I've really painted; which is a pity, because, although I've never been really good at that, it's still nice, relaxing kind of pastime.

21) This is the last one in this post, I promise. I've got more, though, if you want me to ask more. Anyhow, of all of the written works I have posted, that you have read, which one do you consider your favorite?
My first impulse was to answer "the poems", but then I realize that it's only because I knew some of them by heart, so they were always with me; then, I decided to reread your prose, which is what I am doing now.

Absolutely gorgeous. <3 Thank you for sharing those links.

I am very shocked and pleased to see you know some of my poetry by heart! I don't know anyone else who does. I look forward to your answer.

My brother is wondering if William means anything special in Russian? Seeing as my name is a variation on Fox, per you, he was so excited he thought that William might mean something special. :fairy:
