There's a very nice review of Knowing Darkness in the latest Locus magazine.

Sam

Wow. It made LOCUS??? I thought that magazine was science fiction oriented and didn't bother with any other genres.

Bev Vincent
10-13-2010, 03:17 PM
They cover horror, too. They reviewed The Road to the Dark Tower, and they almost always review King, Straub, etc. They're covered under the blanket of Fantasy -- i.e. Dark Fantasy.

Sam
10-13-2010, 08:48 PM
I did not know that. I've never subscribed to the magazine, so I only know it as a perennial favorite at the Hugo Awards.

I've been reading Locus for over 25 years. Never miss it. In the early days, that was where I got a lot of my Stephen King news.

It is HARD to display this book! I had to put it on TOP of my bookcase! lol!!

Kind of dangerous and I'm afraid it will fall off if there ever is an earthquake, but it's that or put it in a box in a closet (where I have my extra one I have and the Ray Bradbury one...sigh....)

I took the two books out of my traycase to display it safely, also I was afraid the weight of the books would damage the case over time....

CurtSeattle
01-10-2011, 05:21 PM
i think mine just has the one signature page. Wasn't there two versions? I can check in a few minutes. Maybe I should take Knowing Darkness out of the traycase...hmmmm.....it is soooooooooooooooooooooo heavy

Catalog entry (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Dark+Dreamers+-+S+L)

A special edition of 405 copies of DARK DREAMERS, signed by the authors, was completed in May, 1990. Due to accidental destruction of some signature sheets, three states of this limited edition were published:
Copies #1-#297 were signed by Clive Barker, Gary Brandner, Ramsey Campbell, Les Daniels, Dennis Etchison, John Farris, Charles L. Grant, James Herbert, Stephen King, Dean R. Koontz, Joe R. Lansdale, Richard Laymon, Graham Masterson, Richard Matheson, Robert R. McCammon, David Morrell, Philip Nutman, John Saul, John Skipp, Craig Spector, Peter Straub, Whitley Streiber, Stanley Wiater, Chet Williamson, J.N. Williamson, and Grahan Wilson, These copies contain two pages of signatures.
Copies #298-#350 were signed by Richard Matheson, Dennis Etchison, Stephen King, Dean R. Koontz, David Morrell, John Saul, John Farris, Gary Brandner, Richard Laymon and Stanley Wiater. These copies contain one page of signatures.
55 Copies stamped “Publisher’s Copy #__” were numbered 1-55 and were otherwise identical to copies #298-#350. These copies contain one page of signatures.

Some effort was made to collect the missing signatures as the second state has seven signatures on the title page (example below).

CurtSeattle
01-10-2011, 06:03 PM
I just read that same paragraph on page 208 of my copy, but what is strange is that I have number 283 with ONLY ONE PAGE of signatures? There are 11 signatures on it ...weird!!! That seems at odds with what they stated on the explanation. Luckily, King/Koontz/others I like signed the one page in mine.

REALLY is a WELL DONE book in terms of craftsmanship.

Randall Flagg
01-10-2011, 06:12 PM
The information is "fuzzy" at best, but there are copies of DD that have less than the intended number of signatures. I have copies of two versions. BTAIM, the book is a beautiful piece of craftmanship.
Edit:
The pictures in the Catalog are from my two copies.

I had to buy that glass one on Craigslist to be able to have the Knowing Darkness in the same room as my other books. barely fits still. hahaha!

Really is one of the best books I have ever seen. Amazingly well done I'd say even.

Plus, a great value if you buying by weight. hahaha!

I contacted Jerad from Centipede in 8/2010 when he was having a sale on the Knowing Darkness Traycased @ $495, I asked if he had any of the Whelan Remarques left, He said one with a small crease on it...I offered him $700 for the book and remarque, he accepted $720 to cover shipping....

heres the remarque........

I ordered a copy direct from Jared the other day (yes i know i shouldn't have, just couldn't help myself) got a mint traycased version on the way plus 2 sets of fold out prints and a copy of 'Some of Your Blood' by Theodore Sturgeon with shipping to England for $475.

I think i got a hell of a deal, just need to wait 4/5 weeks for it to arrive by surface mail!

I don't think those are the signed limited editions, but the slipcased edition. It sold (including shipping) for $210 when new. The last listing on the page is the signed limited one (or deluxe) at $1000.

I threw my back out while lifting it. Since Knowing Darkness is such a huge book, I have nowhere else to put it except on the very top of my bookshelf. OK. Here it is.

I've never been really sure what this is. It was called "graphic art" when I bought it. I think it is the original artwork. There are artist notations in the margins (covered by the matting). No artist signature. The artwork is on some type of really thick (1/4") white board. I'm sure I spent more on the frame and matting than I spent on the art itself but the image is strangely appealing to me and I like it a lot. Jerad scanned it for the KNOWING DARKNESS book. Image size about 9"x18".

I don't know, I've never had anything custom bound. I would assume the blocks are all the same size as in the bound copies - it's the signed edition.

Hello Brice,
do you create this drawing? You got talent! Is it your profession?

Yeah, it's my favorite too. :D Really though I've loved all of the ones I've seen.

And back to the question of framing...I've never had any art worthy of framing before, but I went to the nearest framer about a week ago just to kinda' look at options. Maybe it's overkill I don't know, but I think I want this museum glass I've heard mentioned here along with a really nice frame. I'll probably have to go out of town to have it done though. I may have to save up for it.

And thanks everyone!

I couldn't be happier. The book, the Whelan, everything is just amazing.

Another member (Jimmick) recently commented that I had a few books still in shrinkwrap and wondered when I was finally going to open them and start enjoying them! One of these was Knowing Darkness which I obtained a few weeks ago but have been reluctant to break the seal. I have thought long and hard about this and decided that I will be opening all the sealed books as I have no intention of selling any of them. The first to be opened was KD.

OMFG what a book! I have seen the odd picture of the content and have a separate set of the pullouts given to me by George Beahm, but the full content of this book is just phenomenal! I have just spent 2 hours looking through it and have only scrapped the surface. Wonderful, wonderful book

If (like me) you have been foolish enough to leave this book wrapped and unopened, GO NOW to your shelf, take it down and LOOK at the content, you are missing out on something magnificent.

You can always read the trade edition of a book like Dr. Sleep and enjoy it (even though you're not seeing the gorgeous art from the CD Editions), but an art book like Knowing Darkness must be unsealed, opened and enjoyed. I spend a couple of hours on Christmas morning perusing mine.

I guess for the same reason people buy collectible coins but never intend to spend them. Or buy collectible stamps and put them in protectors but never intend to mail a letter with them. Probably hoping to keep the books in as pristine condition as possible so the resale value is (presumably) higher at some point in the future. Some agree with this philosophy......others don't. Maybe it is the difference between those who love to collect books vs. those who are just hoping for a profit down the road? I don't really know. Just guessing.

Exactly. My collection until fairly recently has been used books, which I have endeavored to buy in as top condition as possible. These days I am buying more and more expensive books some of which are limited editions direct from the publisher. As the collection has grown I have focused on US 1sts and US gift/unsigned limiteds. everything else is potential sale/trade so I wish to keep them in as pristine state as possible. I'd say I fit into both Bob's definitions, I love to collect the books, but there are certain things I will buy in order to (hopefully) make a profit that will allow me to buy more of the books I need for the collection. My signed Colorado Kid is a great example of this, I don't collect signed limited's but it was a bargain buy that will make significant profit.

It is huge and stored in its original shipping box in a storeroom. It will be awhile before can dig it out. IIRC it was bound in full leather. It also included a portfolio of 20 or so of the illustrations used. I remember thinking that it wasn't worth $5K (or whatever the published price) and being glad that I didn't have to pay that. Jerad could undoubtedly provide more accurate details.

Bob likely has two.

I have one copy of the Brautigam book. Bound in cloth and not leather and housed in a slipcase. Here are my notes on the book added when I got it and after talking to Jerad.

"Copy "II" of an unknown number of copies. The original plan was for 300 cloth copies numbered in black ink and 22 leather copies numbered with red Roman numerals. The leather edition was never produced. This copy has the limitation page with red Roman numeral "II" and is signed by both Brautigam and Dean Koontz who wrote the introduction. The limitation page for the leather edition was considered superior as it contained both signatures and was used on this copy as a favor from the publisher."

I guess I should have said "Bob likely has II", rather than Bob likely has two...

Way back in 2004 when Centipede Press announced the S/L of 'Salem's Lot for sale it was done (to my knowledge) without any advance warning. I'm not sure how Bev Vincent heard of it but I got an e-mail from him one day asking me if I had heard of this and if I thought it was legit. He included a link to the web page and that was the first time I had heard of it. That weekend just happened to be the weekend my ISP decided to change servers and my e-mails (unbeknownst to me) were taking up to seven hours to both send and receive. With only 15 copies of the leather edition available I missed out on it completely. Jerad received my e-mail requesting a copy in plenty of time but his request for my credit card information, etc. was delayed and all the copies were sold by the time I finally got my order complete.

I told my sad tale to Jerad and he told me not to worry and that he thought he had held back two copies for his parents. He didn't think that they wanted or needed both and he would likely have an extra for sale. That started a really great relationship with Jerad and I told him I would buy a copy of all the books he published. The number "2" or Roman numeral "II" became my number and for the next 10 years I have copy "2" or "II" of every Centipede Press title. When I initially told Jerad I wanted a copy of every book he published I really had no idea what he had planned for Centipede Press. I thought it might be a book or two a year. Ten years later I finally had to tell Jerad I had no more room and had to stop buying every book. He understood and said his shelves were overflowing too. Anyway, that's my story on the number "2." He keeps number "1" for himself.

Bob, I swear your the biggest asset to this site. Your stories and antidotes of King stories are just as amazing as your collection. I look forward to the day when I can take you out for a nice meal and hear more:) Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the kind words. And I look forward to that day too!

Excellent story Bob thanks!
It's a bummer they went from 300 to 75, guess it will be impossible to get.
Thanks Lurker for posting that original listing, I couldn't find that.

I don't remember how I heard about it, either -- people just tell me stuff from time to time. I'd have to go back through my old emails to figure that one out.

I didn't opt for a copy at first, but then Jerad had a bump-and-dent sale and I picked up a copy at a steep discount. And I can't find a single flaw with the copy. Jerad is a stand-up guy who makes great books. I met him at World Horror in Austin a few years ago and got to work with him when I contributed to Danel Olson's book about The Shining.

I really enjoyed the chapter that you wrote for that book. I had long heard of the supposed hidden meanings, etc. that Kubrick put in the movie and about the fanatical discussions that are still ongoing about the movie. I had been meaning to look into some of them but had never gotten around to doing it. Just lazy, I guess. Anyway you did all the work for me and I learned more than I needed from your chapter. Lots of crazy (insane) Kubrick fans out there! You cut through a lot of the crap and told me what I wanted to know.

Actually, that was the last listing for the book. There were four or five different ones before that - if you want them - PM me an e-mail and I'll send you the PDFs.
