Hi,

Thank you for the information. Are you saying that locals call the Penobscot River 'Lake Maine'? If so, I didn't know that, and apparently the copywriter in London was correct in the original blurb. I wonder why they changed it, as it would have looked pretty nice.

Thank you.
Gerald

No, I don't specifically remember anyone actually calling the Penobscot 'Lake Maine' while I was living up there, but it wouldn't surprise me if the locals had an 'inside joke' name for it. And 'Lake Maine' actually seems like a pretty good one, if that makes any sense. The error on the flap and your comment about it hit my funny bone for some reason, so maybe there's something to it. The Penobscot really is such a pervasive part of the landscape up there; to say that you live on the edge of it when you live in Bangor is almost kind of redundant in a funny way. This may be a symptom of my overactive imagination, but I can picture Stephen King sending something to a publisher that jokingly says he lives on the edge of 'Lake Maine,' and that mistakenly getting published before the joke was realized. LOL, you never know!

Okay thank you. I thought perhaps that was an official name and I couldn't find reference to it. Unfortunately I have no idea if Stephen had any involvement in the UK DJ text description, but I know that in the US, he did write his own copy for several books. The fact that Tabitha took the jacket photo, it is possible that he did write this copy. Either way, in the absence of finding the original text for the dust jacket, it will only be conjecture. Thank you for the information.

Gerald

It was the only copy there and it was in the used book section. Probably a reviewer's copy.

So much for sticking to release dates. I'm surprised a King book would be in a store prior to release. Although I've seen some available to ship on eBay. I thought there were tighter controls over when a book could be put up for sale. Congratulations!

It probably was a reviewer's copy. I just got this in a couple of days ago with the promo letter laid in. A lot of copies of the trade edition are being offered on ABE right now (well ahead of the release date).

I can't speak for Bangor area locals, but in my 50+ years of living here in Southern Maine about a 1 1/2 hour drive away, I've never heard the phrase "Lake Maine". :)
We even checked with my father-in-law who has fished the Penobscot river for salmon for almost 70 years, and he hadn't heard it either.

Dave Palumbo was recently commissioned by CD in support of the upcoming publication of 'Salem's Lot. Over the course of the last few weeks, I had been speaking to Dave about the project while hoping to acquire one or more of his original pieces.

As you can see with these as well is what Kris and David had recently acquired, Dave is incredibly talented artist and I look forward to his involvement with future King projects.

"The Bite" is the Cover Art for the Signed Artist Edition

So my 15th anniversary was on the 14th of the month, and I had already received a new Joyland Illustrated and a S/L edition of the Illustrated King Trivia Book (rev ed) from my wife.
Later that night I told her that I had just seen a listing for brand new copy of Secretary of Dream Vol 2 for cover price! She wanted to know why I was still standing there and not in the other room ordering it. :)

After it arrived I mentioned to Chadbourne that I had gotten it and he said "well, give it to me for a couple of days" or something like that.

I thought "But...But...But...I just GOT it."

I picked it up today....

Congratulations everyone on the new acquisitions!

Well, here's a new P&J for me which I'm really excited about. I've been reading/re-reading all of Stephen King's books, and recently read Firestarter for the first time. It has become one of my favorites and I wanted a nice signed copy for my collection, so I found this one.

It is an association copy, signed and inscribed to Otto Penzler, the famous mystery book publisher and bookseller. It is dated 5 days prior to the official publication date, and it is also an advance review copy which includes the review slip and publisher's publicity sheet. The DJ is bright and not faded as you often see with this book.

I recently purchased a black The Stand Case from AKC (Tomas at SK Collector only made 10 black cases, none of which were for sale from him). I jokingly told Tim to be sure and include a 1st edition Stand with the case.
When The package came, it felt awfully heavy.

The case in black is beautiful. Congrats on getting one of these! I got the white one earlier this summer, and they're a great way to protect AND show off The Stand.

That Fire Starter looks fine/fine. Good for you on the edition and the quality you wanted.
A black Stand case with only 10 made, I didn't know that. I am aware that RF has cornered 10% of the market. Perhaps a monopoly is coming?
Congrats guys!

Yesterday my Gift Edition (Phil Hale signed) arrived.

In 1994 it cost $75 and almost 22 years later I paid $94. It was the last of the Gift Editions I was missing and not sure why I waited so long. Too many were printed is my guess why it didn't get the traction to keep up with inflation. It is page for page the same as the LE. They even share the same DJ.

Tickled pink to have it. Here it is with the LE and the signed print from the art portfolio. Lastly on the slelf where it will spend the next 10 - 20 years.

Ever since that fateful (for me anyway) day in 1982 when the salesman at Golden Age Collectibles in Pike Place Market in Seattle convinced me to spend $20 (which I really couldn't afford at the time) on an illustrated Stephen King book I have had a thing for the slow mutants. The cover art for the Grant edition of The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger as much as anything else led me to buy the book. It was shrinkwrapped and I really couldn't see anything else but those creepy ghouls grabbing Jake's leg on the cover drew me in. No one can draw slow mutants like Michael Whelan so when this art showed up for sale on Michael's website the other day I couldn't resist.

Image size about 10"x9" but framed to a larger size. Acrylic on paper. It is one of the interior illustrations from the Grant edition of LSOE and titled "Welcoming Committee."

This was made in stainless steel by a Canadian artist. I have had it for 25 years one heavy mommy. The guys name was Kramer. No relation to Jerry Seinfeid's Kramer.

I totally fell for this when I first saw it and had to have one for the wall. And one cannot say enough about how nice Mr. Chong (ok - Vinny) is.
A bit different from the Polish example - the Death card is in English. I was going to have a black mat all the way up to the border, but I see it would cover the signature. And it is much bigger than I thought. Have it taped in its plastic on the top of a banker's box and it's still a tad bigger than that.
Any suggestions? Or just cover it and know it's there...

I wouldn't cover the signature with the mat. I would trim the mat to leave just enough white showing along the lower border to let the signature be visible. I think that is a pretty common practice with prints and I think you would like it better over the years if the signature was visible.

Like this one a lot! I am a fan of Vinny as well an can't say enough good things about him. I ordered a print from him and it arrived damaged. He immediately resent the print with the same number (I'd asked for #1). Still haven't framed the damn thing yet, though...

This is my Little Man’s 2nd Birthday Celebration Weekend. Today was devoted to visiting temples and making merits. Tomorrow is for visiting an amusement park and opening gifts.

I received a lovely gift from my friend Mark (Slow Mutants) in America. I collect paperbacks, but he tells me that “Firestarter” is very difficult to find in a First Printing. I was not aware of that. I have a copy that I picked up years ago, but I honestly don’t follow the paperback market as close as I probably should.

While I do have several signed paperback books, I did not have a “Firestarter” that was signed. I was very happy to discover that Stephen signed this on Halloween in 1981. I know that the King’s used to have visitors to their house on Halloween, but am not sure whether adults came with books. Perhaps he was met by a fan in Bangor during the day, or at the movies. Either way, it is a 1st for me.

None of that matters though, as Mark made me promise that the book was not mine, but my boy’s. When he can learn to read horror stories, I will give it to him. At the moment, it would be remarqued with crayons, then used for making confetti. It is safer if I look after it for awhile.

Happy birthday to your little one! My boy is almost 19 months old and I'm already thinking about his upcoming birthday too. I'm sure my Julian is going to be happy with his presents but that signed Firestarter is fantastic! First printings are really hard to find (I've been looking for years) and to have one in this condition and signed on Halloween is great on so many levels. Congratulations!

There is a white version too Paul? Oh no. I will have to get the DeLorean out on Monday and get it up to 88 mph. With Bangkok traffic, you will know that it is not possible. I wonder if Waterstone's did a purple cover as well in the UK. Okay Paul, I will accept your offer of helping me find a white cover now. Thank you in advance.

Ha ha, good one Gerald.. I think we can safely rule out a Waterstones variant on this one...Here's my white copy, and if I ever come across another one, it's yours. BTW, Bruce has the boxed set which I think is cool. Both the black and white were issued as a set in a cardboard slipcase.

Thank you Paul. That looks to be a great copy too. I appreciate the information on the different covers. Did the #1 on the cover indicate which box set it came from? I have seen other numbers on different box sets, but never paid much attention to them?

It's my understanding that these were originally released as a boxed set, but I'm not aware of other numbers at the top and what they might represent. I've never seen one with a number other than "#1", so that's interesting. I always thought it meant "#1 bestseller" or something like that.

I think I remember hearing of a copy out there with "From the author of The Dead Zone and Cujo" at the top, which also has the full numberline. I thought that was interesting because 1st printings of both the black and white covers have only "From the author of The Dead Zone".

Maybe someone else can chime in if they have more insight.

Gerald, I also have a first/first of the Firestarter paperback (according to the number line) that has "From the Author of The Dead Zone and Cujo" on the front cover, instead of just the "From the Author of The Dead Zone" as I've seen all the other first/firsts. It's a white cover. (I also have both colors of the "regular" first/firsts.) None of mine, however, are in as good condition as yours, nor are any signed.

Here's a picture (not the best, but...):

As for me, here is my latest acquisition : a second french edition of FRANKENSTEIN. Aaint in the best condition, but i've never seen one for sale before. And, as vthe only known copy of the true first french edition is at the national library, well, I wont be able to get an earlier copy !

That looks like a nice book, Jeremy. What is the publication date?

1922 :)

I have also bought some new bookshelves yesterday, and this book is now right in the middle of a shelf.
On other shelves there are some gothy decorations (eg : skulls, boxes, glasses), and an idea crossed my mind. Probably won't be able to do i, but... who knows?
I would LOVE to have a shelf where I have first french editions of major books / stories in horror / fantastic :
- 1st french edition of DRACULA
- 2nd ed of FRANKENSTEIN (which I now have)
- 1st french edition of a book by Poe & Lovecraft.

Need to do some research and those, but I like that idea. Maybe a new goal for me?

It is nice to see collectors pride themselves with their newfound collectibles. Even nicer to share and to show other people that appreciate what people have found, purchased, and have finally gotten for their collection. I simply wanted to say thanks for the sharing and the pictures. It it nice to see others that appreciate and pride themselves with their hidden treasures. Thanks everyone!

A few months ago I finally stumbled across the black cover edition, so have both. I know they're not worth much, but it's fun (and cheap) to always peek at the PBs in used and thrift book stores. I will keep looking for better condition books - these look better in real life. Minimal (if any) spine creases.

Those both show a full number line, so they are true first printings. both also have "From the Author of The Dead Zone and Cujo" on the cover, so they are the scarcer variant. I've never seen the black one before. I've heard that the true first printings were part of a boxed set with The Dead Zone. I wonder if these also were part of the boxed set.

I'm guessing these were once part of that box set, but separated at some point. It's kind of an odd "rarity" to have, but after seeing SO many number lines starting at 2, I'm convinced these are pretty scarce.

Gerald

Hey G,

Glad you got the book safely and I hope you guys had a great weekend. Remember, if you substitute "Thomas the Tank Engine" for a little "Cujo" or "Christine" every once in a while, you may just be helping to create a future novelist. Just a suggestion...

Mark

PS: Do you want me to send you on over a patch, or is the one knee thing meant to be a fashion statement over there? I think I saw Lil Wayne dress like that once.

I got exciting news today: I am a FINALIST in Int'l Short Story Competition.

Though I'm not among the winners (already announced) am very satisfied with my portion.
About 36,000 stories from 149 countries have been submitted and 249 finalists (0.7%) were selected by a group of professors.
I submitted 2 pieces but don't know yet which one they read, or perhaps both?

I found among the finalists one name you all know: Bev Vincent.

Congrats to both you and Bev!! Still waiting for my postcard, but I repeated your story over 30 times. The HOOT story! Still cracks me up!

Yeah, it's about a "devil may care", Israelite that loves the "Yankee's" who takes a life changing trip to New York in search of the world's finest, Knish!!!! Sadly, when he finally acquires the object of his arduous quest he realizes he is all out of spicey brown mustard and must settle for "French's" yellow mustard instead!!! It's a very terrifying story!!! LOL LOL

Sometimes, I just crack myself up!!! LOL Boy, I could really go for an authentic, NYC Knish right about now!!!

I am afraid my story might have King's "Rage" effect, lol. That's why he ordered to remove it from bookstores' shelves. Do you hint that your wife could lose her temper if someone touch your books? Oh, my. I'm gonna tell booksellers to ... lol

Well, I finally got my first Dolso case, and what a beauty it is. I had to convince Dick to venture back into the world of Knowing Darkness. As many of you probably know, he had quite an injury scare the last time he produced one of these, and he was only now willing to take another crack at one. I am so pleased he did. This is the one book that I was looking to protect for so long. It's a real beauty. So now I have the bug. Dick and I are in the early stages of working something else up for the future.

Congratulations to both of you Moshe & Bev !

Yes, congrats to both! Woo-hoo!

Congrats! I would like to read it sometime :)

LoveLoveLOVE this!!!!

I have one of these (the book) myself and would instantly order a case if not for the fact that shipping to Europe will cost a small fortune.
