Here are some new P&J's I received in last week. May be the last for awhile (except for preordered Salem's Lot), as need to start saving for down payment on house and car.

Dolan's Cadillac is from David at Bett's from the recent consignment:

A little rough but I think for a 1977 PB it survived quit well. I put it with my two other Bachman. On the hunt for a ROADWORK. There is no end to this LOL.

As mentioned above, Jeff makes one. I'm getting ready to order one. I've been told to measure the height of Roadwork because it stands a little taller over the other three. Some collectors ended up with a slipcase that Rage, The Long Walk, and Running Man fit just fine but Roadwork was tight.

Thanks everyone for their kind words on the Dolans and Carrie Lettered.

TrueNorth finding the Roadwork (at least the US version) was hard for me. I ran out of patience and bought a copy that had some initials on the first page inside the cover, and on the top of the book (where a remainder mark might go). It was about the only copy I could find, and waited a couple of months for the price to fall a little.

I know what you mean, I see a rough one has been on eBay for a while. I have been writing bookstores as well as checking all the usual places.
I just bought a beautiful Dolso slipcase from Priest.

This is from Priest's post. Now I just don't want I NEED a ROADWORK.

My wife and I went camping this week, our first real vacation in over a year. We stopped by a little independent book shop down the coast a ways and on the top shelf of the horror section were 2 of these...

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/774/medium/Camping_Trip_183.JPG

My very first Limited!!!

Turns out that Glenn Chadbourne lives there and often drops by and leaves thing for the shop to sell. Recently he dropped these off, and in the past they had a copy of SOD 1 on the shelf for quite a while.
He also has several other items there including signed artwork. I took some other pics and will post them... somewhere.... any suggestion on a good thread?
So anyways, after speaking with the lady behind the counter who grew up with Glenn, i agreed to leave my copy there and she will get him to sign it (and, fingers crossed, a little bonus artwork?).
It's still hard for me to believe I spent $85 on a book I will never read... :) Admire the hell out of, but never read.

But I'll cut to the chase. Super excited about this one!!

Quick story first.

It has been a very interesting time for this proof. All I can say is, it has been one slippery bugger. It doesn't show up for years and years, then in the space of a week or so, 4 show up (including the one today at Betts.)

Not only did I miss out on the 1st one (great that it ended up with Gerald, and signed to boot! Congrats again Gerald), but I missed out on the 2nd one too! A copy showed up on eBay the other day. There were a bunch of bids, including mine, and kapow, the listing ends. Very frustrating! So I want to point out, that this is NOT that copy. I don't like doing that sort of side deal on a book that is on auction and there are already bids on it. I feel it's unfair to the bidders.

The proof fairy was definitely on my side this time around, because I was presented with another opportunity! Third time's a charm. This time, I got it! I had to work hard for this one, and it was touch and go at one point, but it worked out!

Thanks! Yes, it's an interesting phenomena. It's not the first time something like this has happened. In this case, I know of only 7 or 8 copies that exist. Four of these showed up in a matter of two weeks or so, and from what I know of them, it's all completely random. My personal guess is that after this flurry, we won't see more for some time.

After enjoying the discussion I had with Peter Schneider concerning his involvement with the limited editions of The Regulators and The Stand, I got to thinking about one of my favorites, Firestarter.

I personally believe that with the attention to detail found in the Lettered Regulators, it is one of the most beautiful signed limited editions out there. However, there is something about opening Firestarter and hearing the spine crack each time, combined with the smell of the paper and boards that is quite intoxicating.

By today’s standards, it is minimalist in design, and I think that is why it is one of the few King limited’s that is sought after by non-King collectors around the world. Two of my copies were located in Japan and not in locales you would expect. One copy was purchased from a monk in Kyoto, before he started his training. He was not a King collector, but he purchased rare Western books that had designs not commonly found in Japanese society. He was an artist and from what I can gather, that was his only Stephen King book. He bought it at auction in New York when he lived there in the 1980s and kept it ever since at his home.

The other copy was purchased in Osaka from the estate of a man that had ties to Japanese organized crime. The book was in his office, displayed between two samurai swords, in a glass cabinet. Photos from circa 1990s show it there, and was sold by his family upon his premature demise. Rumors, and that is all they ever will be, say that when he brought people to his office, he would tell them that if they ‘messed up’, they could choose punishment by fire or the sword. I will never know which ones were dealt out, and I will never try to find out.

My other copy belonged to the late Charlie Fried, and while I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, our email correspondences, and stories from others, show him to be a true gentleman. I am proud to have a few small pieces from his vast collection in my library, and they are well looked after.

My final copy is something rather unusual. It was purchased in London, probably 15 years ago from a publisher, who also happened to be a big Stephen King fan. I am not sure if you would call it a prototype, or a publishers copy, but the leather label on the cover is not the standard red rectangle, but an orange die cut in the shape of flames. I rather like this design because it’s brighter and gives you an indication of what is inside. For unknown reasons, this design was not chosen in place of the red label. Correspondences between Alex and Stephen discuss the Lettered edition in great detail. Alex had designed a rather unique tray-case for this edition, but it would have pushed the issue price to $325, so it was decided that the 26 copies would be issued sans tray-case.

I hope you enjoy.

Jon already mentioned this earlier, but I'd like to thank him again for letting me into his home and showing me his great collection of books, many of which I was seeing for the first time 'in the flesh' so to speak... Although the SK books took most of my time and attention, Jon has a vast collection of books from other collectible authors as well. My side of the trade was these two matching SOD S/L to add to my seemingly rapidly increasing number of S/L's this year!

Foster, good looking Rage. I Have a very nice Roadwork available, AND it's a first print! - well a first Canadian print, but you're Canadian right? Number line starts with 2.

Foster is Canadian who likes his books from the good ol' US of A.....but thanks for thinking of me. I got Running Man (1st/1st) at a bookstore in Bridgton Maine last month for $50...SWEET.

The lettered Firestarters are stunning. I really appreciate the insights and back stories. Thanks, Gerald. I'm not a collector of limited editions yet, but this has been one of my favorites from the first time I saw a photo of it. I prefer the looks of limited editions that were issued without DJs anyway.

As I mentioned, I got to visit my husband's deceased aunt's collection a few weeks ago, and there were a handful of books that were still shrinkwrapped, though most weren't. His uncle had me open them and we found that Wastelands S/L was missing the King signature!!! I initially told him to contact the Grant Books "office" but now I'm wondering if that's the best choice.

Is Grant the way to go, or should he perhaps bypass them and try to deal with King's office? Or.....I can't imagine this is the case..... Is this desirable as a "faulty" edition at this point?

It really was strange to open this up, expect to see that classic signature and the spot was just empty? Those of you with contacts with King's office, is there any way of making a handshake here so I can help his/my uncle correct his Wastelands? It's a near-complete set (DT2 though TWTTK) so hopefully someone up the pipe would want to see that corrected. PM me if that is a better choice. Thanks for your opinions everyone.

OK, this isn't really MY Pride & Joy (at least not yet, I hope it will be in the future), but I feel a bit of ownership over dealing with the issue with the book being Unsigned. So I actually ended up working with Ms. Mod Marsha D on this and after she verified that I was in fact acting as agent for my uncle and all the information was correct, it was worked out to send the book out to Maine; this being the Exception that proves the rule. Also, we got a very kind word from Robert Wiener from Grant Books about my aunt, the original collector. All in all, it was a very gratifying experience to make this happen.

So here is a look at a proper numbered S/L of Wizard & Glass, where the Signature Page got signed 19(!) years after originally published! Sorry about the low quality, but that is what I got from my Uncle. I hope this story was of interest to at least SOME of you!

I hope it's not number 464 - I'm missing wastelands from my set.

Since I don't officially own it yet, and don't have specific permission from my uncle, I don't want to have the completed page posted. I'll be glad to post it once I work out the eventual deal that lets them become mine, hopefully sooner than later.

No, it isn't #464. :) This is a NEAR complete set just a touch above 600; everything DT2 though WTTK except Gunslinger is a match. Gunslinger is a flat-signed 2nd Edition for this set.

Except the front cover, are there any differences in the way the asbestos is?
If I remember correctly, in the past Bob was able to look at a second asbestos copy and the covers looked sigthly different : the texture was "pointing" a different way.
Obviously that's just a slightly difference...

Yes, it was possible in this specific instance with THIS book, at THIS time, contacting THESE people, shipping the book to the RIGHT place at the exact RIGHT time. Ms. Mod was VERY nice about this (as was Robert Wiener when he was remembering my aunt); but I think that Ms. Mod could have just as easily shut me down had the set of circumstances be slightly different. I won't start shipping my own books off to her, now that I know the address.

I'll shut up about this Dark Tower set and the rest of the collection now.....at least until I can buy them from my uncle, who sees that I care for them greatly. Their kids don't value the books or the collection as a "Life's Work", so I'm hoping to pick them up as quickly and fairly as I can to keep them "in the familiy" for several more decades.

You know what it's like to hunt down a book...then wait for it to show up in the mail. I have been looking for 6 months and this arrived yesterday. It's a little sweety.

One different thing I had never seen this before......
SK signed in the front and it's numbered in the back. Stange usually on the same page (back or front).

I will mylar until I can find (impossible I know) a slipcase.
The book is danty and reallly neat. I am tickled pink.

Last photo shows my Richard Bachman shelf. FYI King picked Bachman from Canadian band Bachman-Turner-Overdrive.

Thanks Priest!

FYI King picked Bachman from Canadian band Bachman-Turner-Overdrive.

I have some correspondence between King and Bill Thompson from 1976 in which King discusses publishing Getting It On (Rage) under a pseudonym. At that time the pseudonym was going to be Roger Adler. I do remember reading where a BTO song was playing on the radio and King decided to go with Bachman as the pseudonym.

I agree. If I didn't have my heart set on (eventually) having a Dolso case of this book, this is definitely the one I would go with. Hopefully I'll be able to place my order with Dick in a few months. Perhaps I'll get the Collector case and have Dolso build the case to fit the Collector case inside.....or is that overkill? :)

As I am a Dark Tower junkie to be sure, I guess this recent personal purchase of 3 items qualifies as a Pride and Joy for me cause they are all Dark Tower related. (say sorry, I have not taken pictures yet).

Backstory: Some of you know that when Grant Publishing comes out with a new Dark Tower book, King more recently has inscribed copies (mostly the Artist Editions) to current and past Grant employees (why past Grant employees I have ZERO idea, but he does) and behind-the-scenes people who worked on the book....all told less than 10 people. In the case of both Little Sisters of Eluria and Wind Through the Keyhole. these books were signed and presented to people roughly 2 weeks before actual publication...in the case of WTTKH King actually signed and dated the books exactly 2 weeks prior to publication.

I just acquired from Tom Canty (artist and designer of Grant slipcases/traycases...Tom also did the pictorial art cover of the Queen on the S/L Talisman and some interior illustrations and also worked on Prime Evil among other Grant limited editions)....sorry....I aquired from Tom his AE copies of LSOE and WTTKH both inscribed to him and the WTTKH also dated prior to publication....and I acquired a third book, the S/L LSOE that is unique.

Tom was given way back when 25 Publisher Copies of the S/L LSOE (he designed the traycase) for him to give to his favorite publishers, artists, circle of people....He intended to make them all special by doing a unique remarque sketch in each copy and to then label them Letter A, Letter B etc. As Tom tells me, he only ever got around to remarquing and Lettering 6 copies....5 he gave to special people and the 6th, Letter "F", he kept for himself. I now own that Letter F Tom Canty copy with a smallish remarque of a skull inside....pretty cool overall.

Amazing Story! That is awesome. My only connection to SK is this story -----

When visiting Bangor Maine, I stopped in front of his "house" and got my obligatory picture taken. On the way down his street, we stopped for gasoline and i met the gas station clerk who said that is where SK used to get gasoline.

Absolutely nothing "exciting" for anybody else than me : we moved flat in march/april. Before that we were in a small flat and all my books were in the hall, on 4-5 cheap bookshelves.
Now, our flat has a corner where I could literally put more of those shelves if needed, although need to be careful with the sunlight. Plus we also have a big garage literally below our flat.

We wanted to get custom fitted bookshelves but would not financially be able to do that, so I just come back from a shop were I bought 4 more bookshelves that are classier & bigger. I'll start building them next weekend, but it's good to feel like settling more!
I'll have those bookshelves in the leaving room with my most important books. And the current cheap bookshelves will go down the garage for cheap books such as pocket books and other storage.

EXCITED at the idea of getting my books out of the boxes they've been in for the past 6 months! I will also have more space for books : in the past I did limit my books purchase because I literally had no more space. The books were ridiculously starting to piling each other on top of the bookshelves !
