Unexpectedly, I recieved today a book from Moshe : an english translation of a french author that I quite like and who was on stage in Paris with King. It is, I think, his only book available in english (althoug there are better ones if you ask me).
THE CAIRO DIARY, by Maxim Chattam
(For information, the french author's name is MaximE)

If you are interested, here are more informations about the book
>>> http://us.macmillan.com/thecairodiary/maximchattam

Now, i'll only have to get it signed next time that I meet him :)

THANKS A LOT MOSHE !

Last year, i bought some comics from the German comic artist Rainer F. Engel,
Monsters Illustrated about the world´s greatest Monsters.
It was possible to order from Mr. Engel a remarque from a Monster/evil person... and i of cause asked him for some classic Stephen King Monster drawings.

Monsters Illustrated #1
with signed CUJO remarque from Rainer F. Engel
with some nice promo monster postcards.

I had a lovely birthday weekend. I made a Black Forest cake, and my little boy had his first slice of one of my creations. When he gets a bit older, he will appreciate it even more when he discovers German Kirsch (he already loves cherries). I received a FedEx package from London on Saturday and I thought I would share them with you here as I see others listing their new purchases in this thread (it's my first time posting a new item).

#1 : Bag of Bones - UK Proof (Grey). This is in Fine condition with a tight spine. It appears unread.

#2 : Hearts in Atlantis - UK Proof (Light Blue). This is signed by Stephen on the title page. This is also in Fine condition with a very tight spine. It appears unread.

Finally, the last proof I received was:
#3 : Danse Macabre - UK Proof (White). I have been searching for this proof for 18 years now as this book was one of the first I ever read (after The Stand). I really love this book. I only got confirmation a couple of months ago that it existed. I just had a solander case made to protect it as it appears unread and in Fine condition.

Those are simply amazing. The Bag of Bones and Hearts in Atlantis proofs are very scarce (let alone signed) and then you top it off with a proof no one knew existed. Love it.

I used to own a grey BoB proof but I was never able to find the green one (I did have the 'reflective' one). I had a lead on the light blue HIA proof a couple of years ago but the seller never came through.

Gerald, those are some very, very nice proofs. The grey Bag of Bones and the light blue Hearts are really scarce. I've read that the grey Bag of Bones came with the same slipcase as the more common holographic proof (my grey one has it). Do you have any knowledge if this is accurate or not?

I've never seen that white Danse Macabre before. Is there another version of the UK Danse Macabre out there or is this the only one?

Hi John,

Yes the grey proof came with the same slipcase as the reflective one. I have another grey proof and it has the same green slipcase as this one does. I don't have a slipcase for the green proof as I believe it was a different size (wider if my memory is correct?).

I have no indication that there is another Danse Macabre proof. The only way there could be was if they wanted to show the correct price of the First Edition. This has a tentative price of GBP 9.95 and the First Edition was GBP 8.95. I am not sure if they would have created a 2nd proof to show this price change, but it's possible.

Hi,

I am not sure if the maker is listed here but I use two companies in London for all of my cases.

1. The Chelsea Bindery (http://www.peterharrington.co.uk/chelsea-bindery/overview/)

2. Sangorski & Sutcliffe (http://www.bookbinding.co.uk/)

They do beautiful work. They are not inexpensive, but if you are looking for protection of your books so that you can pass it down to your heirs, they will look as good in 50 years as they do today. I have some cases from Sangorski that was made in the early 1950s for some Tolkien books, and you cannot tell the age of it.

My green proof and the grey one are the same size. I figured that the holographic proof was the first, then the grey (which was combined with the leftover slipcases) and then the green one. Of course, that's just an assumption on my part. I still can't come up with a plausible reason for three different proofs, though.

I read that the light blue Hearts in Atlantis proof was sent to newspapers (about 25 copies done) while the royal blue version was the one distributed generally. My light blue version has some accompanying letters from the publisher. I thought I posted these in my collections thread, but I can't find them. I'll post them there momentarily.

Thank you for the info John. My memory is probably mixed up with the Hearts in Atlantis. The light blue was smaller in size than the royal blue. If your green Bag of Bones proof is the same size then you are correct. Did your green come with a slipcase? I have no idea why 3 were done. The Hearts in Atlantis light blue was told to me that they were for select London newspapers to review the book. The royal blue was for mainstream reviewers and was in larger numbers. I was told 25 as well, but I have no written confirmation.

My green one did not come with a slipcase. Which, of course, means nothing. I've found one reference that says the green one came with a slipcase:

http://www.redeem.freeserve.co.uk/Kingbookpages/BagOfBones.htm

I don't know how valid this is, however.

It's funny but I had the order just the opposite in my mind. I have no definite proof but I have mine shelved with green first, then grey and lastly the "holographic." I don't know why though.

I think Mike Pasiuk posted a photo once of the green proof with an invitation letter for a release or press event. That led me to believe that the green one was a gift for the attendees of the event. The grey one seems like an early proof issued before or simultaneously with the green one and the reflective one is more like an ARC.

All speculation, of course.

I would not rely too much on what the proof says the print run is. There seem to be lots of proofs out there that have a print run shown but the actual run was more or less than that. I've heard that the actual print run of the UK Danse Macabre was between 600 and 1000 copies. (The letter that came with the US proof of Eyes of the Dragon said one million copies (see my post #27 in my collections thread) but I've heard the actual print run was about 400,000 copies.)

Wow, I did not know that. Still, I've never seen a print run as low as 500 copies mentioned on any other proof. I think it's pretty cool. And it makes sense we've never seen a proof of this book before (I assume they would not print dozens of proofs for a book with a first print run of only 500-1000 copies).

I have another nice item coming from London in a few weeks, but the solander case being made to hold it is taking a bit longer to build, as it's a much larger size. I had to mail the item there from L.A. to get sized correctly, and when complete, it will be coming to Bangkok. It has never seen S.E. Asia, so I will give it a tour. Maybe I will transport it across The Bridge on the River Kwai.

When I receive it, I will post some photos.

Take care.

The 500 was the anticipated print run for the entire First Edition printing. Officially it is impossible to know if you did not work for Macdonald, but it's always been widely believed that the actual first printing was less than 1000 copies. Whether they increased the 500 to 1000, I do not know, but like Carrie and The Stand, both of them had first print runs of less than 1000, so it was not that unusual. As this was not a fiction novel, they were not going to print a large number of copies at the time. Needless to say, it is very difficult to find a First Edition today. Everest House copies are far more common.

That 'Salem's Lot's a beaut!!

My new and modest pride & joys (sorry for the bad pic):

http://www.thedarktower.org/custom/images/1434569888-EntropyLovedeath.JPG

With these two books - courtesy of Matt (mkb.redux) - I now have fourteen Simmons first editions in my collection. A couple of months ago I only had a few battered paperback reading copies so I'm very pleased! I think I have about seventeen books to go in order to complete a collection of firsts (including a couple of limiteds like 'Entropy's...').

Thanks for all the comments!!!! Definitely the most I've spent on an unsigned book but never had the chance to get a copy like this before. This shining proof is not new but recent. It was a gift that I gave to my son recently for his Birthday. This was given to Owen by King So it was nice to follow the tradition of giving it to my son. It is signed about nine months before release. I truly wish that I could post the letter and papers that came with this. Haven't posted this thread in a while... but had a few things come in the past week
interestingly, I while reading another thread on variant covers which made me go rummaging, that I realized I was missing a nice copy of Four Past Midnight 1st US ed.
had the one I read... but it wasn't Fine copy... which is how all my other US/UK firsts are... so I was feeling that they were incomplete again.
Luckily, I found this absolutely gorgeous copy on ebay for less than 10 bucks. still need to find the variant cover though.

some yummy proofs (actually had a Legend proof already... but this was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up)...

A few months ago I picked up an original Michael Whelan piece that was tipped into a Knowing Darkness Deluxe edition.
While impressive, it didn't compare favorably next to my other two MW original pieces.
The art was on a rough sheet that was ~14"x9", but the drawing had quite a bit of empty space at the top 1/3 of the sheet.
After consulting with a friend on the board I decided to NOT trim the piece.
The art sat in my book room. My wife took the piece along with the two other framed pieces to a framer. She had the piece "cropped" by the matting, but underneath the piece is the original size.

Very difficult to get a good picture, but here are a couple:

Many of you may recall that I was fortunate enough to win the 3 Haven Fund Desperation Gift Editions with the Maitz watercolors.

As a result, Don was kind enough to also forward me the damaged book that he found in the Desperation Police Car. Primarily, because he couldn't risk TAK returning to claim its lost "prize". Note that the slipcase on the damaged copy didn't survive the attack.

No worries as DOLSO and MERLIN came to the rescue! What a nice surprise on my doorstep this afternoon!

Thanks to you both for your support of the the Haven Fund as well as making sure the damaged book is protected from TAK going forward....

As you all know, I'm a real "junkie" when it comes to remarques...I just completely lose my head. I do not think I have posted any of these as I have received them over the last few months, but if I have I apologize....in addition to being a remarque "junkie," I think I am even more of a Dark Tower "junkie,"....put the two together and OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is yet another Jae Lee Remarque in a US Artist Edition (I think I own 7)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/JLeeAE1.jpg

And another Jae Lee in a US AE (pic is fuzzy sorry)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/JLeeAE2.jpg

OK, these I KNOW you have NOT seen because prior to a couple months ago, a Jae Lee remarqued UK, yes UK, AE edition never existed....here is my first one:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/JLeeUK1.jpg

And here is the second UK AE remarqued copy:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/JLeeUK3.jpg

Now my dream of owning a complete Dark Tower Publisher's Copy set ALL with remarques will NEVER happen because Bernie Wrightson has never or will ever Remarque a Dark Tower book (as far as I know), but I have moved a step close to achieving that goal; while I have long owned a complete Dark Tower PC set (only 4 complete sets known to exist as ONLY 12 Gunslinger Publisher Copies were ever made)....I am close to having all books but Wolves remarqued...I have Gunslinger, Waste Lands, Wizard & Glass, Song of Susannah, and Wind Through the Keyhole....don't ask me why, as I am perhaps the biggest Whelan fanboy out there, I do NOT have a remarqued PC Dark Tower VII or LSOE but I can remedy that in time. I have a remarqued Author's Copy of Drawing of the Three...need to get Phil to do my Publisher's Copy.

At any rate, here are some other newer Dark Tower remarqued books:

An Anderson remarqued Song of Susannah AE.....previously, all the remarques he did were in 1st trade editions.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/SOSAE1.jpg

And an Anderson remarqued SOS S/L Publisher's Copy

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/SOSSL1.jpg

Two more....here is another McKean remarqued 1st trade edition:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/W_GTrade.jpg

And finally a remarqued W&G S/L PC copy (I wish the remarques were switched as I like the trade one above better, but beggars cannot be choosers)
