Is the design between the title and kings name significant (related to the story) or just a cool design, the book binder decided to use?

I had been debating picking up one of these, but I finally caved when I saw one that no one was bidding on last week. AND I LOVE IT! It hasn't made it off my desk yet. I just keep shaking up the spiders. It is definitely one of my favorite promo items. (Please excuse the crappy picture though--hard to not get glare from lights, windows, etc.)

In case I'm not the only one who didn't know, Gray Parrot is a man who works as a book binder. I was curious about what a "Gray Parrot" binding was; it was surprisingly difficult to get Google to help with such a generic search term.

Congrats, Zelig.

Every time I see someone getting a copy of the S/L THE STAND, I'm filled with an inordinate amount of jealousy that rages for days. :( Someday -- someday -- I hope to add a copy to my collection, but sometimes I wonder if I ever actually will as I've never paid four figures for a book, and I don't know that I ever would/could. That said, I have a beautiful Fine/Fine 1st/1st HC of it in the S.K. Collector traycase, and I try to tell myself to be content, that that's good enough, that I don't need the S/L...but the heart wants what it wants.

I feel your pain RC65. I started collecting around 1987 and I've only added the S/L Stand now! I kinda stopped collecting for a while and missed it at the time of its release. There were many times I would see someone add it to their collection and would feel what you're describing. I tell you, I wasn't planning on getting it when I did. It was a spur of the moment thing. I too never thought I would pay 4 figures for a book but once you do, it isn't too bad. Start saving my friend. You gotta do it.

Simon, yes it can be a slippery slope. What's even more slippery is if you get into collecting lettered editions. That's one I'm definitely staying away from for now.

Congrats Zelig, a S/L The Stand is a wonderful book to have. I too was not actively searching for a copy but had seen a few sell and had always wanted one and then things just fell into place and I bought one.

RC65- Like Zelig said, start saving. The good news is even with the popularity of this book there always seems to be a few for sale so your day will come, just be ready so you can pull the trigger when it does.

OK. Some cool stuff but probably not too much for King fans. Here goes.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/vacation1_zps377565c9.jpg

Centipede Press's ultra deluxe edition of The Monk. A LIFE magazine from 1968 with a fairly long feature on Mary Shelley and her writing of Frankenstein. I have been looking for a decent copy of this magazine without a nasty subscription label for a pretty long time. Centipede Press's softcover and deluxe editions of Salem's Lot (Studies in the Horror Film series).

McCammon's Queen of Bedlam (numbered edition from Subterranean). Thriller #1 - a cool fanzine from 1972 that has (among other things) an editorial by Robert Bloch.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/vacation2_zps042f85ff.jpg

65 Great Spine Chillers from 1982 with King's "Suffer the Little Children" is a UK (Orion) publication. I had never seen this particular cover before. It turned out to be the second printing of the book. UK trade edition of Doctor Sleep is an ARC (I think) with promo material laid in. An ARC of Whitley Strieber's The Last Vampire. I started collecting Streiber proofs/arc's a year or so ago (and,no, I can't explain exactly why). Some are surprisingly hard to find. Still looking for The Hunger and The Night Church. Two copies of the PSPublishing numbered edition of Carrie. I have a couple of matching numbered sets going on these books. Tim Powers' numbered and lettered editions of Appointment On Sunset by Charnel House. Both have "morgue toe tags" affixed to the front board and are pretty cool.

I got something else in yesterday and am just waiting on an OK from the artist to post pics.

I have been sent a wonderful present from Rachel as a thank you. (I won't go into the details of why, but she felt I deserved it and I'm not complaining!)

This is a one off original piece of art that depicts a young Roland defeating Cort with his hawk, David. In order to keep this a surprise, but still make it special for me, Rachel went back through my posts and collection thread and worked out what one of my favourite scenes would be - she was of course spot on!

I love everything about this and I am overwhelmed by the thought and gesture. I have thanked Rachel privately and now do so again on this public forum. I hope everyone likes it as much as I do.

Thanks Rachel!!!!

The art is a watercolour on very thick paper and Rachel did not want to roll it too tightly. The box was custom made to hold it.

Well, I know my photography is not going to do justice to this piece of art but I did the best I could. On Friday I received my Palaver sculpture from Rachel Readman. #8 of 50 (to match my painted Constant Reader and Silflay sculptures). It's better in person that in photos but I took some with and without flash. It is about 10 and 3/4" by 9" and pretty heavy. I would guess 2 or 3 pounds. Rachel issued a caution about hanging it and I think a stud finder should be used. I think I will just use an easel or a stand to display it. Not sure how many have been sold but if some still remain you should consider getting one. First class (world class?) artwork by Rachel, as always.

Rachel hand painted five of the Palaver sculptures. I entered my name in the drawing and was able to get one. This is really a special piece, IMO. I got to work with Rachel on how I/we wanted it to look (i.e. night time, evening, dusk, etc.). Here is mine. I was amazed at the added detail and was really impressed that the playing cards are individually painted. The one's in Walter's right hand each have a crimson eye painted on them while the one in his left hand is The Hanged Man. Really remarkable.

Wow! These pieces of artwork from Rachel are absolutely amazing and truly stunning!!!. I hope that she gets to do the artwork in one of the Stephen King The Doubleday Years books that CD are currently producing. IMHO I think that her particular style of art would be fantastic in the forthcoming edition of The Stand! Anybody agree with me?

You mean she hasn't been given a contract to produce artwork in a Stephen King book yet? WTF that's fucking crazy!!! :wtf:

With all the different publishers that regularly visit this site, you would think one of them would sign her up? No scratch that, ALL of them should sign her up!!!

My Cemetery Dance Grab Bag came in yesterday. Overall, I would say I'm pretty happy with the selection since I do not own any of the items.

The two signed limited editions are of writers whose work I'm not familiar with: Gideon's Corpse by Preston/Child and Indian Summer by the late Rick Hautala.

The unsigned editions are right up my alley with Screamplays contributions by two of my all-time favorite collectible authors King and Laymon and of course the SK Movie Trivia book.

The publications have contributions by King, Hill, Rocky Wood, Ketchum, Garton, and many others.

The Lettered Edition (PC) is Pork Pie Hat by Peter Straub

With my $50 gift certificate, I'll be ordering Bev's new chapbook (signed), and The Loveliest Dead S/L by Ray Garton.

Obviously, most of these are worth well under CD's asking price, but I think I at least broke even.

It's just that I think CD must have printed 80,000 copies of that book because just about everyone gets one in every g-bag. Some of us have lost count of how many copies of it we have.

Other than two copies of the Lettered Edition in this past Grab Bag, we haven't used it in a Grab Bag in a long time, actually.

Brian

You know I got nothin' but love for you guys!

But I did once have a dream that I received a grab bag, opened it and it
contained 12 copies of PPH.

There are 40 in a carton -- be careful or you might just get a full carton delivered to your front door!

Thanks to a friend who visited China, I was able to add a few more Chinese DT books to the collection, now there is a complete set of DT1-7 from the older series and a paperback of TWTTK from the new series.

Very nice on the buttons! I'll be attending the event (hopefully - I live right up the road & will try to get a regular ticket), but I definitely haven't gotten over the fact that I couldn't kick in enough $$ up front to join the DT.org group for the VIP functions. At least I'll know who you guys are by the buttons!

Just wondering if these Chinese editions are authorized by King. Neat anyway!

The Cujo looks great. Is that a tire track near his right front paw?

Thanks for the link. I wish they had other King story products, too. A Pennywise would be pretty cool.

Love that Cujo!

RF, is your spare up for sale? If so, do you have a price in mind?

First person to commit (and I agree) to pay $99 (plus shipping, by quote) PP gift gets it. I normally don't bother with these oddities, but this one impressed me. I bought an extra. You should have.

Obviously, most of these are worth well under CD's asking price, but I think I at least broke even.

image 2 (http://s68.photobucket.com/user/bookking/media/books/IMG_5357.jpg.html)My grab bag was identical, including the lettered Pork Pie Hat. It's okay to be jealous of my collection...

Now that's a good looking set of books! All you need is a few more and it'll be perfect.

Nice - the Bachman PBs are the only items missing from my First Edition collection. I have The Running Man, but not the other three and not willing to pay the current going price. Hope to stumble upon them in a yard sale or something like that! Or buy them if I win the lottery! :-)
