Thanks to John, now I'm the proud owner of one of the promo glass balls of The Mist! :) It's really cool!!

And thanks to Jerome, now I own a first editions of one of the best books I've ever read: IT, and a first edition of one I really enjoyed (unlike a lot of people who didn't like it too much): Tommyknockers.

THANK YOU TO BOTH!!!! :)

I also have the limited print of Randall Flagg in The Stand portfolio, signed by Berni Wrightson :)

Sadly, I do not know, only that part of my heritage on my mother's side comes from Wales. I've never been into that ancester thing.
But if I had to make an educated guess...Caerphilly, as well as we get on, you could be a relative of mine.

Have you ever posted a picture of your first edition Dracula? That would be very cool to see.

I can later this weekend if you are interested. Most are disappointed when they see it. It's really not very impressive looking. The American edition, which came two years later in 1899, is much better looking. I'll take photos of both.

I've really wanted the S/L DTIV for a long time and couldn't pass up this price from a trusted seller. It doesn't match my V-VII (#101), but it'll fill in nicely until I can upgrade to that one!

So now after this buying spree, I've got to do some sellin' to pay for it (so says my wife)...

Bob,

Have you ever posted a picture of your first edition Dracula? That would be very cool to see.

Here it is. Published by Archibald Constable in 1897. I think there were 3000 first edition copies done. I'd call this copy VG minus. Not perfect but better than many I have seen. They always seem to have some wear and soiling.

First printings have no advertisements at the rear. Later printings have ads and publisher's catalogs inserted at the rear but are otherwise the same. I think the later printings also used thinner paper so the book is measurably thinner.

Doubleday & McClure published the first US edition two years later in 1897. I think it is a prettier book with some gold gilding on the sun in the illustration on the front board. I'm not sure of the number of copies printed.

Not that I am aware of. But there is really no end to Dracula collecting, if one is so inclined. The book has been in print continously since the first printing in 1897. There are literally hundreds of different editions. I've got many of the more notable editions but nowhere near all of them.

And, Wiz, I'll have to check my records at home later tonight to see when I bought those two pictured books. I think I've had them for at least eight or ten years.

I will have to dig this one out at home because I do not think I have ever posted any pictures of it:

It being the S/L prototype for The Regulators. The Toy box looks the same although the gluing process apparently was different. But the check is pretty cool because if I remember correctly it says prototype 1 of 1 for the check number. Can't remember who the check is made out to. Am curious now myself.

Mike (gunkslinger) has or had the Lettered edition prototype. We both bought our copies from Barry Levin. I know he paid exactly 5x what I paid for the S/L prototype...too steep for me.

I need figure out what to do with my comics. Like how to store them.

Mattv -

You really should bag and board your comics. Any local comic book store should be able to sell you single bags and boards (rather than having you purchase a pack of 100 or something). If you don't have a local comic book store, toss me a PM - I'm sure I can dig up some as I collect comics. As to how to store the comics once they're in bags with boards, I would suggest a comic box, but again, the best bet for those is a comic book store.

What is the opinion on leaving the sticker on the cover that says auotgraphed copy? I usually remove them if theyhave one, just so it eventually does not damage the cover years fromnow whenthe glue gets old.

I'd say leave it - it adds a bit more authenticity to the novice (should you sell it down the road), and when the book has a print run of 1.5 million, dust jackets will never be in short supply if one chooses to replace it.

definitely leave it on!.... it helps verify the signature and anything that adds authenticity adds value.
in my view... it is part of the book... since it was sold with it as part of a "signature" package.

if you want to buy a second first edition... with a bookcover without the sticker...it's a small investment... and should the sticker somehow "damage the signed cover" you always have a backup cover to put on the signed book.

This is a proof copy of Small World, Tabitha King's first published novel. Not in the greatest of shape, but the seller notes that it was once Peter Straub's copy (although I cannot verify this).

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments, guys. It means a lot to hear such great feedback from this group, being the craziest bunch of collectors in the world I know of!

This room is the culmination of the "dream room" I've had for years, its taken me a long time to get here, but now that I've got it, I couldn't be happier. All that's left is for me to get the big screen TV and surround sound in and wired and get someone to lug some couches down and I'm all set!

Yep, there's still room left for me to grow my collection and now that my books are out of boxes and I can see what I have I can get out there and buy more books.

One question though, are those 1st editions of The Shining and The Dead Zone? The reason I ask is because the sizes don't seem right.

Nope, not 1sts - just BCEs that I'll get around to replacing sooner or later.

I'm sorry, but if that's "nothing to look" at for someone.....well, I don't know what. Because that looks awesome in my opinion.

Thanks! I meant the contents of my collection are nothing compared to the guys here with 75 copies of the comelete s/l Dark Tower series (no, I'm not too jealous)!

Finally here are my library pics. I was so happy to get the 3rd bedroom when I moved to NM, back in CA I had bookcases everywhere  . The room was just an empty white room with mirrored closet doors. I got the new sliding closet doors (which hide my comic collection) the fireplace the bookcases and the little cabinets on top of the bookcases which hold my shot glass collection. The leather chair and the rug, trying for a real library feel.

The first cabinet on the left holds my signed editions, mostly personalized, the second cabinet holds my small press s/l, SK books (non s/l), Harry Potter and Terry Brooks. The third pic shows a close up of Rachel's wonderful "Constant Reader" sculpture.

Sir Boomme, my absolute favorite place for furniture is www.homedecorators.com - for the cheaper stuff click on the outlet page - but the stuff in my office is all from there - nice quallty and won't break the bank!

I used a media shelving system, meant for DVD's and CD's, for my paperbacks. Takes up less room, and they fit very well. Pics:

I've used bookcases made by Hale for years. They are pricey but I don't think you can beat the quality and look. I buy the 300 Series.

Lot's of places sell them but I have had pretty good luck ordering them through Blue Hen.

That chair was one of the toughest things to find, trying to find one that the style fit and was comfortable. It came from a small furniture store here, they are Ashley furniture dealers so it may be by Ashley.

The bookcases came from www.homedecorators.com (the link Daghain posted) the nice thing is a lot of their styles come in multiple sizes (24", 36" 48" wide) so you can fit almost any area. And they have the biggest collection of styles.

I was able to get this when ran into S. King in bookstore near his winter home, I said hello and he shook my hand and we got into conversation. I handed him a pen and asked if he would autograph a book for me. He said, "Sure" asked my name and started signing. My pen ran out of ink half way through and he laughed, said "Dead pen". then pulled out his own and finished signing. Very cool experience....unusual personalization.

I assumed Home Depot owned the site too but I have never seen this type of furniture there, maybe they have the catalog up at the customer service desk, they had some outdoor furniture catalogs that had tons of products not in the store up at the customer service desk so maybe they have indoor furniture catalogs too.

I like the look of the cases Bob provided the link for but could not afford that type of bookcase, I am sure they are of better quality though. The 1 negative to that style of bookcases is no adjustable height.

The home decorators bookcases are all knocked down (have to be assembled), so factor that in (it probably took me 10-12 hours total to assemble all my bookcases)

I handed him a pen and asked if he would autograph a book for me. He said, "Sure" asked my name and started signing. My pen ran out of ink half way through and he laughed, said "Dead pen". then pulled out his own and finished signing. Very cool experience....unusual personalization.

Very, very cool! Thank you for sharing it!
Was King at all put-off/annoyed when you asked for an autograph? I'm sure he must be used to that sort of thing....but when he said "sure" was he friendly about it? I'm just curious how he reacted to the random meeting in a bookstore of a fan wanting an autograph. :)

Mr King did not act the least bit put off and in fact was extremely friendly (like we knew each other). I was sitting in cafe area (which overlooks the parking lot) drinking a cup of coffee and munching on a spinach stuffed pretzel when I noticed what I thought was a familiar figure come though the door. I about dropped my coffee, lost interest in the pretzel and attempted to follow with my eyes as the flannel shirt attired man proceeded into the depths of the store. I took a minute to grab my cell phone and make a call. "I think Mr King is here", I told my wife as she answered. She knew by the tone in my voice that I wanted to go running about the store and scope him out further yet simply replied "Cool" and laughed. When I got off the phone I casually glanced around not spoting the writer. I got up and walked past some isles to see if he was there selecting a book to read. I did not feel it would be appropriate to run up and down every isle so I decided to just back towards the front where there was a display of Duma Key set up. I had one in hand and was thumbing through it when Sai King came walking in my direction. I said, "Hello Mr. King". He immediately replied and reached out his hand to greet me. While I shook his hand, I said "This is a very interesting book". He answered with, " Thanks, It it set in this area". I explained I knew that as was already reading it and then asked if he would mind signing a copy for me.
He was gracious and said "Of course". We conversed briefly about a few things and I then remembered I had a small HC copy of Colorado Kid in my back pocket which I asked if he would sign also. He ablighed and told me there was talk of making it (Colorado Kid) into a mini-series or TV movie.
I was quite nervous and he was quite at ease and friendly the whole time. I eventually moved on while he signed a number of books in the display. After paying and taking my prized books to the car I thought to go back in and ask for a signed book for a friend as well. I told Mr King my buddy would kill me if I told him about seeing him, getting a signed book for myself and not getting one for him. He replied with, "I'm sure he wouldn't really KILLL ya" asked my buds name and signed one for him as well. The hour drive to Sarasota had been well worth it, but leaves me wondering what the spinach stuffed pretzel tasted like..

I know there is a comics forum but...

This so typifies New York City -
I have been collecting the variant issues of Gunslinger Born and now Long Road Home. When my office was uptown, I went to the premier store in that area Mid-Town comics. I bought the Jae Lee variant for issue 1 of Long Road Home and the place charged me $75, by far the highest ever for any opf the variants. I vowed that I was done collecting them unless I bought them on the cheap on eBay (which I have done and did for issue 2).

For issue 3, my office is now at 23rd Street and there are 2 stores within walking distance of the office. I first called my old shop Mid-Town and they wanted $70. I said screw that. So I went to a small shop across the street from the office on Wednesday (release day of issue 3) and waited 10 minutes for them to open only to find that pre-orders had sold them out (at $30). So I walked to 14th street to the second biggest shop in the city and got the Jae Lee for $36 and the other color Variant for $10. How can shops in one city charge $30 and $70 for the same issue? Must be a wealthier clientele uptown.

I already posted this at the SKMB, but I just had to share once I saw this topic:

I had the good fortune to visit one of my favorite local bookstores (Half Price Books) a couple of weekends ago. I say good fortune, because I got the find and buy of the year, in my opinion anyway. Here's the story:

I was browsing around the paperbacks while my wife was in the kid's book section looking for books for our kids. I decided to see what they had on the clearance rack - I have a lot of hardcovers, and I like to pick up the paperbacks on clearance because they are more portable.

I found a couple of Grishams that I wanted to read, then found a decent copy of the Shining. Since it's been awhile since I read that, I decided to pick it up. I was just ready to turn and leave when the title of another paperback all but jumped out at me:

RAGE
by Richard Bachman

This is the clearance rack! I grabbed it, and I don't believe I'm exaggerating when I say it is one of the cleanest copies I have ever seen. The colors are good, there is a very light crease near the spine and light creases on the spine from reading, but it is in outstanding condition.

There were two price tags on the book, one in the upper-right corner of the front cover and one centered near the bottom on the back cover; this is how Half Price marks their books (the price tags peeled off completely clean). The price? $1.

I looked around to see if there were other Bachman paperbacks on the rack, but this was it. I quickly found my wife and told her it was time to check out - I'll admit I was a little freaked out by such a rare find, and I thought there was no way I'd be allowed to buy it for a buck (I felt a little like Jake Chambers in the "Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind" - I was prepared to make a run for the door if they tried to take this book from me).

When I got to the checkout counter with 5 or 6 books in tow, the guy started to ring them up. When he saw Rage, however, he stopped.

"This was in the clearance rack?" he asked. All I could say was, "Yep."

He called a manager over to show him, then turned to me and said, "This is out of print, are you familiar with this book?"

"Yep," I said again.

The manager didn't really say anything, and I worried he was trying to work out how to keep me from buying it; maybe claiming it was mislabeled, and I should understand that they can't really sell it to me.

Finally he said, "Someone is going to get a talking to," and rang it up at $1.

I walked out (it felt like I floated out), and my wife asked me what was wrong. I told her what I had found, and she just smiled and said, "Wow!" She doesn't really care about it very much, but I was thrilled.

Sorry for the long-winded post, it isn't every day that you find one of the rarer 1st editions in amazing shape for $1.

Also sorry for the blurry pics, I'm not much of a photgrapher...

congrads on the rage.... i know the feeling you were talking about. while passing through town coming back to austin, i stopped in a little indepedent second hand bookstore in waco tx about 7-8 years ago. i had gone through all the sk stuff with no luck... i got to the checkout stand and happened to notice a copy of rage that was thrown up on a file cabinet behind the counter. i off-handedly asked the little old lady that ran the store if i could look at the book...she showed me it, and i asked how much she would take for it...
she says: " well, it really wasn't for sell, she hadn't seen many of them before". so i again asked her "if she were to sell it... what'd she take for it."
she states she "needs to go back to the backroom and research it" - which she does...and i'm like damn, so much for THAT deal.
she's gone about 5 minutes, comes back and says." ah...i'll take 8 bucks for it"...
trying not to shake and pee my pant's => :excited: , i say ..." we'll, does that include tax?" she says "sure"... and i reluctantly say, "well....alright...i guess i'll take it".

needless to say i was thrill to get a nice copy of rage for only 8 bucks... one of the best prices i have ever heard... until now - but you've got me beat!
two thumbs up   and a yippee :dance:for ya

ps. the only thing i can hink of is that her research didn't turn up a rage 1st edition...but maybe a paperback copy of the bachman books which at the time sold for about 5 to 8 bucks, which is possibly what she based her price on.
i'd feel bad for her... but then i realize some sucker probably did a 2 for 1 paperback tradein with the book, and so the little old lady probably had all of 25 cents invested in the the copy herself.... so in her mind, at 8 dollars, she was fleecing me.

And...I got a really, really good price on a New Lt. Rap #'d s/l...so low I couldn't pay it in good conscience - I told the guy I'd give him $100 MORE than his asking price! THAT is how low it was!

Actually, the DT II s/l is what got me into collecting signed books in the first place, so I guess I could say it actually me $30,000...haha...

I received my Dark Tower and Crimson King #19 prints today and this little gift was sent with them.

I can't believe the Whelan's generosity, I am soooo lucky :excited:

Excellent Dave! Very nice. Michael and Audrey are indeed generous people.

A couple of years ago, circumstances dictated that I sell my perhaps most treasured non-King collectible. It went to a good home.
Just recently I was able to aquire another.
Song of Kali Lettered-only 15 produced. This is Letter B:

Congratulations Rusty!!! :) She's very cute!!!

And congratulations Oy and Jerome! I've been looking for Song of Kali S/L (not lettered) for some time, but I always find something to buy instead. I'll buy it after I return from USA.

Here is a new one, at least I had not heard of this state before. At the Seventh World Fantasy Convention in 1981 attendees were given a limited edition (1000 numbered copies) book. There were contributions (stories and art) from about 20 different authors/artists. Stephen King's contribution was "The Bird and the Album" which is an excerpt of sorts from the novel IT (even though IT wouldn't be published until about 5 years later).

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/wfc7.jpg

I've seen numbered copies for sale and I have seen review copies but, until now, I had not seen a lettered copy. This book is in a slipcase (other copies do not have a slipcase) and is hand lettered with an "S" in the limitation space. Peter Straub's name is also on the limitation page.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/wfc7limitationpage.jpg

This book has made the rounds and has signatures of virtually all of the 20 contributors except Ramsey Campell. I was especially pleased to see that Robert Bloch and Ray Bradbury had signed. Stephen King signed at his contribution on the first day of the convention.

Some questions arise. Did this book come with a slipcase or was this one added later? I think it was probably added later but it sure fits and looks like it was made for the book. Did all contributors get a "lettered" copy that matches their last name (as the "S" for Straub)? I have no idea. Like I said earlier, this is the first I have seen.

Most excellent. Thanks for sharing.

Bob, again you never cease to amaze us! I'd never even heard of a lettered edition of that one!

I love that room, Dave! One of the benefits of the move from CA to NM.

Daghain and Bill, great spaces you two have as well.

I want glass-front bookshelves someday.
