I have been looking for this little journal for many years (at least 10) and this is the first one I have found. Yes it has coffee stains, a sticker remnant and some writing on the cover. I wish it were in better condition but I am thrilled to have a copy in any condition at all. DREAMWORKS: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly, Volume 1, Number 4, Summer 1981. This particular issue deals with nightmares and King contributed a short essay on a recurring dream that he has.

I don't know what it is sometimes. I don't think this is particularly rare and it seems every other issue of this journal is available for sale. It wasn't expensive and, now that I have one, they'll probably start popping up all over the place. But, for whatever reason, I never could seem to find one. Really happy to have one even in lesser condition.

Interesting! Thanks for posting.

John

YES VERY INTERESTING and not something I keep as tight an eye out for as I now will.
I will have to check a couple stores I plan to visit this weekend on my way to Sarasota.
I've been visiting a couple stores which have had some unusual or uncommon things.
No great King finds yet however perhaps just not looking hard enough. Just a matter of timing... and some knowledge like what is shared here.

The awesome deal that wasn't! ><

I am at the Strand Boostore in NYC looking at the dollar books outside and I spot what looks like one of those early Doubleday proofs that Carlosdetweiler (Bob) has on his collection. I can see the top of it, the words UNCORRECTED PROOF, but not the title. Color is similar to the "Salem's Lot proof. I am really excited, like OMG!

So I pick it up, and it's a tall Doubleday proof alright.

http://i933.photobucket.com/albums/ad175/papaseraphim/chan/2014-03/f1624f90-573c-48bc-93f1-88e906b18f8c.jpg (http://s933.photobucket.com/user/papaseraphim/media/chan/2014-03/f1624f90-573c-48bc-93f1-88e906b18f8c.jpg.html)

Not King, but it was only a dollar it's signed by the author.

Oh, and I also found an Uncorrected proof of Alice Walker's The Cushion in the Road.

Oh Well...

I just picked up a copy of the S/L edition of 999 for $50 plus shipping.

Earlier this year, I was going to buy one from an acquaintance for $150....but the deal fell through.

Damn...I wish I had this one with me in Toronto, as King was one of only two not to sign this S/L.

I think 999 was the first S/L book I ever bought. I was in awe of the production standards (high quality binding, gilt, the little ribbon!). Hell it might have been the first book I ever bought that came with a slipcase. It holds a special place in my heart and I would LOVE to get both King and Oates to fill in those conspicuous blanks.

OK, this might be a STRETCH to qualify as that Awesome Deal, but being Caretaker of Betts does put me in the position sometimes of being shown some awesome books....Correct, King did not sign either the 999 S/L or Lettered editions, but a couple years ago, a guy in Maine contacted me and told me that he was the (and I will bastardize the spelling here) anesthesiologist in hospital where King had multiple surgeries following his accident in 1999. This guy was a King fan and brought several books in for King to sign as he lay in his hospital bed...one of which was a Lettered 999 which this Maine resident sold to me for $340....I don't know if I have the ONLY Lettered edition signed by King, but if not there can't be too many!

Received 4 Doctor Sleep Signed
1 Rage 1st U.K. Signed
2 The Gunslinger 1st Edition(left Dust Jackets at home)
The Doctor Sleep Galley Proof Unbound was the only one I didn't get signed that I brought. Since he already signed 7 books for the 4 of us I thought I'd stop on a good note & not have him think I wasn't grateful for all he had already done.

Thanks everyone! Two of them still have the stickers, you just cant see them. I'm not real sure on the current prices. The first one is the hardest to find. The others can range from $10-$30 depending on condition. I think Betts has a set for about $150.

Salem's Lot Gift but has plain black slipcase with Salem's Lot down the spine in Red Lettering, I think Sirfolio must have had it made. I do have my other two gift editions in the traycase from Thomas. I really like the traycases but the slipcase is a nice addition. It gives a little contrast sitting with my other Salem's Lot Gift editions. The Centipede Press Salem's Lot is definitely my favorite SK Title.

Congrats on that Gunslinger Citizen, very nice; ditto for the IT and this freaky King drawing.

My latest isn't a King, but is something I've wanted for awhile. I collect Band of Brothers-related stuff, mostly prints and some artifacts. I know the good folks at Valor Studios, who have been working with a lot of the surviving BoB vets for many years and who always coordinate some really nice items. This year, for the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, they've started off with a special edition signed Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose. They've been working this for a long time specifically for release this year, and as a result many of the vets have passed on since signing. I picked up a 1/50 signed by 10 vets (they also did a 100 signed by 8, 130 signed by 6, and a Bookplate Edition signed by 1 to 3). Of the ten signers, six have since passed away. If you've watched Band of Brothers, you'll probably recognize the names ... Buck Compton, Babe Hefron, Wild Bill Guarnere, Earl McClung, Forrest Guth, and Clancy Lyall. The survivors are Don Malarkey, Ed Tipper, Brad Freeman, and Rod Strohl.

Thanks for showing that book, George. I just ordered one of the remaining 6 signature books. George at C-Springs

That Genesis Deluxe Edition is pretty nice, but yeah, at 500 pounds ... way pricey. The book is nice, but its really the signatures that make it special. I passed on an original Ambrose BoB signed by 30+ awhile back, I think it went for around $1K. I believe I've got one print with 14 signatures, but still missing Dick Winters and Frank Perconte. All the Dick Winters-signed prints are at least $1K.

Congrats on getting your copy, you'll like it. It may have a ding, as they advertised the books have been making the rounds for awhile ... one of my signers passed away in 2009 . Adam and Karen Makos, who run Valor, are great to work with. Adam is an author as well. He wrote "A Higher Call" which was on,the best seller list last year.

If anyone else is interested, I just checked http://www.valorstudios.com and they're showing just 20 of the 6-signature editions remaining for sale; the 10 and 8 signature are sold out. They announced the book March 27th, so have sold 260/280 in nine days. Price on the 6-signature is $175. They also have some other books as well as prints and a few other items; good stuff if you're interested in WWII history.

Terry Goodkind's THE FIRST CONFESSOR Deluxe/Signed limited to 300 copies. Only offered in two formats, EBOOK and the signed/deluxe. No regular softcover or hardcover exists.......... now tell me that the Stephen King collecting world wouldn't go ape-shit if Sai King did something like this.

G

BTW bottom right in the traycase is a 900+GB custom-made external harddrive that has the Ebook, short films, additionl artwork, and other goods.

That's a pretty sweet set. How long before someone accidentally erases the hard drive? :)

I got #27 of "The Talisman" S/L by Straub and King today. I paid $600 for it on ebay, shipping was another $50, but sadly I was stung by custom charges of $150 so all in all it ended up costing me $800, way over budget, but it's a book I've wanted to own for a long time, and a realtively low number so I'm pleased with that. Not sure if I went way over value or if I'm still within range of the price it's worth??
but I'm happy with it - just pissed off about the customs charges.

http://i57.tinypic.com/8xsh7o.jpg

Also picked up a signed Gift Edition of "Insomnia" - I wasn't sure whether to go with the gift edition or the S/L but I found a signed Gift not much less than cost of a S/L but with intriguing inscription by King so went with that. So those are my two new King pieces and overall am happy with them. :)

Thanks!

This isn't King-related but I also picked up a signed first edition of Ira Levin's "A Kiss Before Dying" (his first novel) from 1953. My grail goal is still a signed first of "Rosemary's Baby" but this was unexpected and a bargain, only $13.49 plus similar price for international shipping, so the whole thing came to $26.59 - but for a first signed from 1953 this is a STEAL in my opinion even if the condition of the book is not great. I rarely grab a bargain so was chuffed with this.

Ok that's me hiding my credit card for the next year - no more purchases! I just got another grail item - a signed Dorothy Parker book. The condition is not good and I probably paid too much but I've wanted a signed Dorothy Parker for awhile. (Still looking for a signed Agatha Christie.) Don't suppose there are any Dorothy Parker experts here? It's double signed but I'm a bit confused about the number on the edition.

I think my first proper King collectable - not including perhaps older 1st editions I bought new at the time when I was a teenager - was a signed "Bag of Bones" US 1st. It arrived soiled and the seller refunded me half the price. I got it for less than $50 I think in the end. To date still remains the cheapest King signed I ever got. My first S/L was "From A Buick 8" (I think). What was yours?

I'm in Ireland. The seller said something like it was fraud for him to mark it as gift or declare lower amount - but I didn't ask him beforehand, only after, so in future I will. I like Ebay's Global Postage Programme - sometimes the shipping is more expensive but it guarantees no customs charges. When "The Talisman" arrived I was really pissed off about the $150 customs charge (112 euro). :(

Did Customs tell you what the charge was for? Did the package state it was a book? AFAIK the VAT laws in Ireland are the same for the UK with regard to books, ie Zero rated. According to this (http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/leaflets/printing-and-printed-matter.html) website that appears to be the case and also includes imports from outside of the Country - "The rates which apply to publications printed within the State apply similarly to publications acquired by traders from other Member States of the EU and to those imported from outside the EU"

I would query this with customs.

EDIT: This is also why i hate eBays Global Postage, sometimes eBay does not take the 0% VAT into consideration and it just inflates the shipping costs.

They didn't tell me what it was for. I just had to pay it at the post depot. I've kept the packaging and will check that. Thanks for this info! I have an email for customs and will follow it up with them, complain, and send them this link. I'm not optimistic about it as Ireland is notorious for being expensive and a rip-off but I will try. Thank you again.

No, problem, glad to help (especially in areas of clawing back money from the Taxman!)
one more piece of info that might be useful in the future. The zero rate does NOT apply to slipcases. If you order an empty slipcase, be prepared to pay additional import charges. If however the slipcase CONTAINS a book (any cheap paperback will do), then it is considered part of the book and not subject to VAT. It's a loophole and if they checked the book did not match then you could potentially incur the charge, but normally its down to what the seller puts on the customs form. ie. 'Book' and not 'Slipcase'. The seller is not lying on the form and you don't have to pay the duty.

LOL. Actually, my apartment is not big (three roms), but it's full with books. Nevertheless I'm currently looking for a house (I made an offer on one less than a week ago). If this new position I got pays as I think it will, I might be able to buy a bigger house soon.

I dont see why you made an offer. Knowing you, you should just enter a contest with a house to win, and... voila :)
Congrats for the new position, and hopefully the new house !

Yes, it just came out a few weeks ago.
I haven't picked it up yet, but the photos look fantastic.

I believe Becca has one.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "pride and joy" just because it was a relatively minor purchase monetarily, but the last bout of King collecting I did I could never manage to find one in decent shape for a decent price, though I tried like hell since it's one of his cheapest early works. So this (got in the mail today) does have a little special meaning to me.

Please review book etiquette. Signed books first. Then gift editions. My first editions are in real
ease date order, my s/l in alphabetical order, then gift editions, then uk editions, then paperbacks.

This is such a difficult book to find a mint copy of. How's the colouring on the spine of yours? So many have suffered from fading. I have a couple and the best is perfect except for this spine fading. The colour of the spine text *should* match the front, but it almost never does.

I haven't pulled off the DJ yet, I'll check tonight. There is some discoloration on the inner two inches or so of the pastedowns. Looks like the glue used bled through a little, maybe due to being exposed to excessive heat at some point? Or maybe a lot of them do it, not sure. Other than that it looks to be in near perfect condition.

Sorry, I should have been clearer - I meant the DJ 'spine' not the book itself. The particular ink used for the cover is *very* susceptible to fading and as it's this that normally faces outwards, it suffers terribly.

I know that I shamelessly plug "Dolso" cases, but it is a defense against these kind of fading issues. Basically, he is selling you and individualized "Book Case" for your books. To wit, I was lucky enough to get a top notch, signed copy of "Firestarter" and it immediately went into a cool "Dolso" case. No worries on fading there!!! LOL

Though, there may be a faint odor of "Urine"!!! LOL Go do the research in my collection thread for that one!! LOL

Looks pretty good to me, but I'm no expert. If it's faded, the front is faded too, so I'd say not faded.

I received THIS (http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-REGULATORS-NEW-SIGNED-by-STEPHEN-KING-HARD-COVER-1st-ED-Richard-Bachman-/301147412690?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=rFzUu0nLSnWAeNdP8D4QfcSISWE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc) today.

I thought for sure the book would show up in less than fine condition, but thankfully I was wrong.

Anyone have any concerns/doubts regarding the signature?

Just wish the signature was on the title page....not a huge fan of signatures on the FFEP.....but a welcome addition to my collection as I do not believe I own a signed copy of title.

Very happy with the purchase...nice rare item at a nice price.
