By the way, EXPLORER got one signed in NYC a few weeks back. He posted the pic earlier in the thread.
Speaking of which, I told Mrs G earlier that my copy was only the 2nd one (so far) I'd seen signed and she gave me one of those "that's nice" looks

She'll never understand, bless 'er. Not like you guys do.

Cheese Bill, You guessed right, that was a cheese board lazy susan for the base.
What really took some EXPLORING was finding a dome large enough to fit over a copy (or two) of UTD.
The base was fairly easy to find at a thrift store once I had the dome in hand.
Have not added a bloody hand print to it though.

We'll be in Charlotte next month and I was looking for good used and rare book stores. Not that I really need to spend anymore money on books since part of the reason I'll be there is to go to IKEA and buy more shelves! But I'll still be looking for books anyway!!!

Good luck with that. Few years ago a friend and I were trying to find good used book stores in Charlotte and tho we did find a couple of used book stores none were good and nothing rare. Couple of common first editions in decent shape but that was about it.

I would like to thank Titan Books and Capitalism for making my acquisition of a Black House S/L possible. I'm going to pick up a Gift Edition dust jacket for it; given that the books are essentially identical, it seems silly not to have one:

I had a Brodart sample pack that contained a cover with no backing. I didn't know what to do with it, so I cut slots in it and put it on an ARC. I suppose you could do the same with it for any other book, but it was a bit of a pain. I was not fully satisfied with it the way I am with putting these things on dust jackets.

I usually wouldn't make mention of this but it's a very nice first edition and it showed up with an unexpected signature.

We all know what it looks like, so I won't bother taking a pic...but my new Pride and Joy is a slipcased 1st HC of KNOWING DARKNESS: ARTISTS INSPIRED BY STEPHEN KING (Centipde). I'm going to cheat a bit (out of necessity, since the "like new" copy I won has not yet arrived (just won a few days ago)) and use the seller's photos:

http://i1089.photobucket.com/albums/i341/at-home-daddy/KD2_zpse5b35dfc.jpg (http://s1089.photobucket.com/user/at-home-daddy/media/KD2_zpse5b35dfc.jpg.html)

It was an eBay auction win @ $50. Seller had shipping at $37 for Priority Mail (which fortunately for me may have spooked some other buyers off) -- I inquired before auction's end if he could do Media Mail, and he said yes. So after a total net cost of $58, I finally have my copy of this striking book.

Yep, the deal with the Knowing Darkness is singular in nature (like James, the shipping on this puppy nearly cost as much as the tome itself)

Patrick - Nah, mate, I'm not a seller by any stretch of the imagination, thus, I'm looking out for (when an opportunity presents itself, as it does from time to time) my forum mates - not customers ... shudder ... :P

I don't know about that, but it certainly has me pleased. I did note that the seller misspelled King's name as "Stephan King" -- but I can't imagine that error detoured that many other buyers. That said, the other copies I've been outbid on -- and very recently so -- have been more than twice that price, so it was odd that it actually went for $50* (starting and only bid)...but I'm not complaining.

* And, no, the seller had 100% positive feedback with over 800 feedback posts, so it wasn't that. Guess it was just my lucky day!

I don't have a roll (I bought them in a stack of 10, I think), but all you do is fold down the top to the size of your book (the bottom is already folded up an inch or so) and fold in the sides to match. Real easy!

I have a spare DJ, so I just might be able to polish that turd.
You will need to sand the page blocks.

So that would be two things I can attribute to this site.

1. The auction listing.

2. The knowledge to fix the book.

Just pure good luck on my part, TN. I happened to be on ebay when it was listed. I think the auction had only had 2 or 3 views when I used buy it now.

My Full Dark, No Stars signed 1 of 100 for thirty dollars will take a bit of beating though. I still get a buzz when I look at that book sitting on my shelf lol.

I kinda figured that, but thanks for the info, TwistedNadine! I will of course go to the few used books stores...you never know!

When we travel we seek out any book stores we can find and make note of ones we'll want to come back to. It is not unusual to go back to a store that had loads of possibilities to find on the date we drop in they have nothing. It has worked opposite as well. On my last trip to NYC I was surprised that the stores I had best luck and always found multiple Kingitems had nothing except 2 very overpriced items. At another store where I usually found nothing of interest was a collection of King Ltd's and signed books that was quite impressive. You never know what to expect.
One suggestion I would make that comes from learned experience; If you pull up a list of stores from a directory, off the internet or in a GPS make a point of trying to call before heading to that location. I can not even count the hours spent on mass transit or driving we have done to arrive and find the store is closed or has become a Starbucks or something.

Ben Staad
07-21-2013, 08:20 AM
That is good advice from Explorer. Try and call the store first. This way you can ensure they are still in business.

Not sure if it is awesome or not but I thought this was priced ridiculously low. Don't think the seller is that familiar with King books. It came today loose in a priority mail box with a single piece of bubble wrap under the book (not wrapped). The box itself was heavily creased and abused by our friends at the USPS and I immediately thought the worst. Miraculously the book and slipcase are just fine. I can't tell though if it is number 127 or 129.

Before today, I had a partial Dark Tower numbered set. Specifically:

DT I (#196)
DT III (#1056)
DT IV, V, VI, VII, LSOE, and TWTTK (all #464)

You'll note the missing DT II and the mis-matched DT III.

As of today (!), I have a better set:

DT I (#196)
DT II (#473)
DT III, IV, V, VI, VII, LSOE, and TWWTK (all #214)

Now I have a S/L'd DT II (with a number below 500) *and* a DT III that matches all the later books. I'm working my way toward a complete same number set. One day; one day...

I still have all my #464s but might sell them to recoup some of this week's hit to my wallet.

Here's a photo of the entire array. I'll add all the signature pages to my collection thread soon. No need to waste space here.
