Folded and Gathered.
Or in texting terms a Fucking Great Time!
Or FNG (New guy in the military-"Fucking New Guy"). Often sent out at as point in Vietnam as the old-timers were "short" and no need for them to die on point when they had <30 days in country before returning to "The World".

These are published by Fantagraphics: http://www.fantagraphics.com/browse-shop/popeye-3.html?vmcchk=1 They came out between 2006 and 2011, so pretty recently, I just kept waiting for the last volume to get them all in one fell swoop. If you're a fan, these are amazing volumes. They do have every Popeye strip appearance by the original creator Segar, plus much more (I sound like an ad, probably). I love the art and the humor, so this is a really cool set to have.

I've been collecting Cavalier mags with King's short stories for a long time. I've never had a "Swithin" April, 1972 issue this nice (and I have had many). Seller had it listed as near mint and I don't think I can argue. Got him to end the auction early ($10) and then held my breath as it was entrusted to the idiots at USPS. It arrived in pretty decent shape. Not bad for a nearly 41 year old mag. Looks and feels almost new.

The eBay Adult section is not accessible to foreigners (at least not to me, and I've tried it many times in my quest for men's magazines with King 1st appearances).

eBay restricts access to the Adult Only category because of laws in various countries that govern the sale of pornography over the Internet. Many of these laws are more restrictive than those in the US, others are less clearly defined.
eBay has implemented this policy in an effort to protect our members from undue legal risk and to promote respect for the laws of other countries that regulate mature audience content.

carlosdetweiller

In my early days of internet and eBay (late 1990's) it was pretty easy to find Cavaliers and Gents with the King stories in them. The April, 1979 Nugget even used to show up occasionally. Many sellers didn't know or care that King had stories in them and the "mature" section of eBay didn't seem to attract many King collectors. I felt like it was my own private shopping section. Nice Cavaliers could be had for $2 or $3 occasionally. Easy pickings.

Now, not so much. There are quite a few King collectors frequenting the mature magazine sections. Even if the listing doesn't mention King there are usually 2 or 3 very early bidders on all King related magazines if the start price is low. I was lucky on this recent "Swithin" Cavalier. Seller was unaware that it was a King pseudonym and I saw it within the first hour of its listing.

I think the deal I got here was rather awesome. Was browsing ebay USA a week past on Saturday when I spotted the listing below.
I was pretty confident it was the book I thought it was when I saw it was autographed by the author and also shrinkwrapped, but I noticed the seller only shipped in the USA. I thought I'd take a chance and emailed the seller asking if he'd mind shipping to the UK. Luckily he was online and replied within a minute or two saying it was OK so I used the buy-it-now option and the book arrived this morning:

I removed it from the box, then the bubblewrap, and saw that it was indeed shrinkwrapped and that the all important gold sticker was on the cover:

http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m609/kingpix/fud4.jpg

I removed the shrinkwrap:

http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m609/kingpix/fud.jpg

I opened the book itself and lo and behold:

http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/m609/kingpix/fud2.jpg

It was, as I'd hoped, a copy of the edition of 100 copies that that Stephen King signed for The Science Fiction Book Club. I don't know exactly how much the book is worth now in the secondary market, but I'm pretty sure it's worth a bit more than the $29.99 I paid for it. A case of me being in the right place at the right time, the seller not really knowing what he was selling, and me keeping my fingers crossed for 10 ten days!!! :)

AUCTION LINK (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Full-Dark-No-Stars-by-Stephen-King-2010-Hardcover-AUTOGRAPHED-By-Author-/330857353020?nma=true&si=btjEXOsGFR2qctdgUTFdiuso46o%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)

I was cruising the completed auctions a few weeks back....and saw that one thinking it was too good to be true.

I emailed the seller on January 12 at 10:45 PST (about ten hours after the auction had ended) and told the seller if he had another, I would pay him THREE TIMES what he sold it for.

He never got back to me.

Congrats on an amazing purchase.

P.S. I paid $393 for mine....and I think I got it cheaper than I should have due to the auction ending on the July 4 holiday.

Normally that would be a $1 fine, but since you actually went to The Catalog, and used the image here, you receive a pass.

Thanks Tippy. Yeah I couldn't believe my luck to be honest and I figured it only having a limitation of 100 copies would make it pretty valuable. As I said upthread, right place-right time! Shame it didn't happen every week! :)

That's a nice price! Still wondering why DT4 is always way more expensive than the other normal DT Grants.

It was the first book in the series that Grant allowed to be distributed (in part) by the larger chains like Barnes & Noble. Prior to DT4 you had to buy them directly from Grant or a few select small bookstores. The theory is that this got many more copies of DT4 in the hands of non-collectors resulting in fewer nice copies for the collecting community. At least that is the theory. Makes some sense to me. it's as good an explanation as any, I guess.

Sounds like a reasonable theory.

The reason I was told was because it was sent to main stream stores it sold out much quicker then the previous volumes and therefore made it "seem" like a harder to find item, either way the sell to mainstream book stores is the reason it's value is higher.

Hmmm. Good point, but it is a "King" story bound in HC and signed by the artist, doesn't that qualify it? You know I am no expert and collect what I like, but interested in the answer from a far more learned collector than I. RF?

No disrespect, inferred, BTW. Just curious

Why would it be in the Catalog?
Did King sign a limited version?
Is it the US 1st trade edition?

Why would a reprint be in the catalog?
King signed the Lettered Edition.

Two questions:
Has anyone ever posted interiors from One For The Road?
What would an unsigned copy go for?

You can still get unsigned direct from ps publishing for £75; and they are on eBay for $125; I got the signed/slipcased for $130 on eBay a few weeks back.

Can't help but notice that this is my 1000th post (I eagerly await my gold pin in the mail ... we've got one of those, right?), and since I like coincidences this is a pretty good one. I arrived in late from Florida last night and had to go to work this morning, so didn't know that a box had arrived while I was gone ... just found it when I went downstairs. Does this make me an official collector? Can I play on the big boys slide now?

I thought it may be a cool thread idea for people to share their best bargain find to add a collectible to their collection. I've seen a few posts lately where people have grabbed some amazing deals, and hoped people would share. Fr me, it's a nice thrill as a collector to find that elusive piece for next to nothing.

For example, my best two: (excluding the amazing gift I received from Bad Penny)

1 - I picked up a first edition US The Shining for $15. Not the best condition, but still stoked to grab it at that price
2 - I also grabbed a first edition 'Salem's Lot for $7.50.

Ok, who's next?

I think that the best deal i ever got, was one day, when i was hunting for a limited edition of THE GREEN MILE #1, in french.
There were 300 (numbered) copies given away during a contest, and it have a fac simile of message by King & signature.

One day, in 2006, i was browsing an ecommerce website, trying to see among the 150+ offers for "the green mile #1" in french if there was a copy. I wasnt hoping anything, but among the very first item, there was one, described by the seller as "include a signature by Stephen King".
How much was he selling it for? 0.90€.
I didnt hesitate and grabbed it : total cost = 3.80€!
Not a real signature... but, a real "steal"! Although it couldnt be define as "steal" as the seller was fully aware of what he was selling! I guess that he simply wanted to get rid of it, and saying more than 150 other offers, he decided to make it the cheapest possible, for being the most visible and selling quickly.

Later on that same year i found another copy (this one being not numbered), for which i paid over 150€. After that, a few other copies appeared... but since then, i didnt notice any for sale.

From what I understand the FRENCH edition is the true 1st edition.

So i heard too, and the next 2 books too, according to Barry Levin's website :
http://www.raresf.com/bnotes.html

KING, STEPHEN. THE GREEN MILE, PART ONE.
We discovered that the true first edition of part one of THE GREEN MILE is the French hardcover limited edition. The limited hardcover edition was printed in February of 1996, some 15 days before the French trade edition in wrappers. The description of the book is as follows: KING, STEPHEN (Translated by Philippe Rouard). LA LIGNE VERTE 1ER EPISODE: DEUX PETITES FILLES MORTES. Librio, [Paris]. [1996]. Pictorial boards, the cover of which bears the note "Serie limitée." Front free endpaper features a reproduction of a holograph note from King, reading, "For my French readers-with love and good wishes-bonne chance en 1996! [reproduced signature] Stephen King." The French limited edition is not only the true first edition, but is also the first hardcover edition. The publisher says that 2,000 copies were done, but it is not clear if this is the press run for the trade or limited editions. Other sources indicate that the limited hardcover edition may have been as small as 300 copies. Since the limited edition was done only for booksellers and journalists, the 300-copy figure may be closer to the mark. Our thanks to the Mlle Stéphane Leroy. According to Mr. Tyson Blue, the French trade paperback, LA LIGNE VERT, LE EPISODE: DEUX PETITE FILES MORT, was published on March 14, while the other editions of PART ONE OF THE GREEN MILE were published on March 27, 1996.

>>>> From what i can tell, there are 2 "limited editions" :
- 300 copies that were numbered and given away by the publisher in a contest. My copy have a letter from the publisher, dated : 5th of june, 1996.
It states : "Congratulations, you are one of the 300 winners to the contest... " So those were sent by this date.
I've seen a few numbered copies (an handful).
- Unnumbered copies. I dont know how many were done. I have only seen 1 copy, and i own it. The seller told me that he got it when it was published, as he was working in a bookstore and got it directly from the publisher.

KING, STEPHEN. THE GREEN MILE, PART TWO: MISTER JINGLES.
Paris: Librio. 1996. True world first edition. According to Mr. Tyson Blue, the French edition went on sale five days ahead of the American edition.

KING, STEPHEN. THE GREEN MILE, PART THREE: LES MAINS DE CAFFEY.
Paris: Librio. 1996. The French publication date was May 24, and Mr. Tyson Blue said that he has an American review copy, moving the American publication date forward from May 29 to May 24.

Well, I hope to follow in your footsteps down the road and find myself so fortunate to have a copy. For economic reasons, I've resisted becoming a Limited King collector for a long while now, and only recently have weakened enough to start trying to pick up L/E Gift editions. It's probably inevitable that I'll begin to look at S/L editions of my favorite King works (e.g. THE STAND) before too much longer.

I started with ARCs/Proofs (don't even remember why!) with no intention of moving to S/Ls at all; that changed when David at Betts offered Eyes of the Dragon #7 at what I thought was a really great price that I would have been dumb to pass up ... so I grabbed it. Then I learned about small publishers like Cemetery Dance, how S/Ls and other special editions are produced, and got on board.

Aside from finding the specific book you're looking for (a certain number 20 years after it was published, or perhaps one of which only a handful were produced), the financial aspect is certainly the second most difficult aspect of collecting ... without the money, it doesn't matter the treasure that you want. But if you just put aside a little each week or each month and wait for it to add up ... it sucks waiting, but in the end the $$$ saved and the sweetness of the purchase make it more than worthwhile.

But if you just put aside a little each week or each month and wait for it to add up ... it sucks waiting, but in the end the $$$ saved and the sweetness of the purchase make it more than worthwhile.

Actually, it's not really an issue of saving up; by economics I was referring to the simple cost. I've been collecting books and involved in the signed/limited game for thirty-plus years (starting waaayyy back in the era of Dark Harvest), but have continued to try and keep myself from becoming a King collector because of the comparative high costs involved. 'Course, had I collected King from the beginning (say, mid-'80's), the retained value of those books would far exceed the values of, for example, those early Dark Harvest titles I bought...so in the long run I suppose I didn't do myself any favors. Now each time I consider delving in, I see King S/Ls costing ten times the cost of other S/Ls (e.g. $450 SHINING as compared to a $40 Cemetery Dance HC), and my resistance returns...some folks never learn, I suppose. Plus, using THE SHINING again as an example, the S/L is $350 more than the Gift...and so I have to ask myself, is his sig alone (and, yes, I know it's traycased instead of slipcased) really worth ad addl $350? I struggle with that. For those reasons, I've intentionally resisted getting into King collectibles, but for some reason have weakened of late, picking up (at issue cost) the S/L of UNDER THE DOME and 11/22/63, fancy traycases for my 1st of THE STAND and 11/22/63, and a Gift edtion of CD's edition of IT...and am actively thinking of other King collectibles I'd like to have. It feels like the 30-year-oldwalls of resistance are splintering and crumbling.

George at C-Springs
02-03-2013, 01:25 PM
Ah, now I understand! I was the opposite; bookcases and bookcases of books for 40 years, but nothing collectible ... I started with King. Now when I go and look at other authors I've always liked (Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Clive Cussler) their S/Ls and ARCs and Proofs and such seem very cheap to me!

Is King's signature worth the extra $$$? As always, that's for the collector's market to decide. As long as people are willing to shell out $2500 for a lettered edition or $750 for a S/L, the publisher's will continue to charge that much ... it's smart business. If they stop selling, prices will drop. For now, they're still selling. I missed publication of Under the Dome S/L, so you're one up on me there. Also passed last week on The Shining, but probably would have gotten it if I hadn't just bought The Stand (that put a dent in the ol' piggy bank). Can always pick it up later if I really really want it or if my numbers show up, just a matter of $$$.

In the immortal words of the Borg, "Resistance is futile" ... it's okay, give in and become one with the rest of us.

Slightly off-topic, but good to see that I'm not the only one who likes Clive Cussler! I will be the first to admit that his stories don't have much substance and can be quite over-the-top but they're real page turners and I like the nautical/historical themes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Buying the uncut 'Salem's Lot dust jacket for $250 was the best deal I ever made. I doubt I'll ever top that.

Agreed! It's one of the best looking of the King signed limiteds. Which number do you have?

Slightly off-topic, but good to see that I'm not the only one who likes Clive Cussler! I will be the first to admit that his stories don't have much substance and can be quite over-the-top but they're real page turners and I like the nautical/historical themes.

I too have been reading Cussler for years. I've read most of the Dirk Pitt series and a few of the other characters he has.

Is it the one with "Reserve not met"?

Yeah the seller just contacted me however and said he retracts his offer because "Stephen king profs are both limited and rare"

He had originally offered me the chance to buy it and then retracted it - whattttttttt?

My girlfriend and I read Dirk Pitt, The Oregon Files, and the Fargo books. We have a couple of the Isaac Bell and Kurt Austin books but we don't like them as much.

I've got all of them; not big on Isaac Bell or Fargo, but really like both Pitts and Oregon series. I especially like the ones where he really delves into ancient history and locations, he hasn;t done that a lot lately. I really expected something big to come out of the discovery of the scrolls from the Alexandria Library, it opened up so many storyline possibilities ... but nothing yet.

WOW! I just got caught up on the last few pages of this thread. SIMON, that Whelan artwork is absolutely stupendous! George's THE STAND, Rusty's SIX STORIES, thegunslinger41's EOTD, cgallagh's art porfolios, John's latest proof, Fullman's new anthology. Looks like's it's been a busy 2013 for a lot of people so far! Speaking of people who are going to have a very busy 2013: Congratulations again to Ari and his family!
