Very Nice Ari.... You must have provided interesting insight to have been selected for that honor?
............ Beware; there are bound to be stalkers after your autograph.

Would you mind sharing your review then?
I however have a question : why would a review of 11/22/63 be shared on the back of TWTKH?

Thank you!

I don't know if I can share it yet.

H&S launched a contest where you could have a 3 line review included in the upcoming paperback edition of The Wind Through the Keyhole. I sent mine about 11.22.63 and today got the news. :)

Congratulations on the book. It's a really good anthology.

New items from last week:

http://www.roog.nu/213.jpg
- brandnew Italian DT1 paperback with silvershiny fronttext
- UK Hodder paperback of Bag of Bones
- UK TimeWarner pocket of Firestarter (looks as new, except for the damaged shiny text when I removed the pricesticker :/

I also found out about the existence of this release, which is already from 2008 2005. It's a German DT7 flexcover from Weltbild.

What do people think of this purchase today?

2007 The Best American Short Stories "S/L" 1/100 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/300834457746?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649)

I figure the book without the aftermarket binding is worth about $100 (the last three to sell on ebay went for $73-$150).....so I think I got a fair price?

I thought the same thing; being the only one missing it really stands out. You have to guess that he was under contract/obligation to sign, and that if he didn't something must have happened ... I sincerely hope it wasn't that he just blew it off.

Yes, I took the first photo while still wrapped as a "before" shot; the cover has no sticker (that would suck!).

Picked these up today:

Got mine imported from Amazon the other day, annoyingly though one of mine is misaligned and off centre, so the text on the dj spine doesn't start where it should at the edge, makes it look a bit meh on the spine. Reprint King hardcovers are something I love though, I didnt have a hardcover of the Talisman so this fills a gap on my shelf, I wish there were more of them. I've been hoping for a new edition of IT for the last ten years or so as that's the most major gap I have.

The Talisman and BH copies I received from Amazon a couple of weeks ago were damaged so I returned them. Cost me $50 to send them back and I now received an e-mail that they're only refunding me something like $10 for my shipping efforts. Bastards.

I'm still hoping to find nice copies because I really like the covers!

May I ask where you found that? I tried to purchase that from Amazon last year, there were 2 copies available and they were gone by the time I tried to check out!

I'm still searching for the Silmarillion which is somehow the most rare of the five.

mae
12-29-2012, 12:58 PM
Becca, I got my set from Amazon UK. There's another copy available from the same seller: http://www.amazon.co.uk//gp/offer-listing/0007488203/sr=/qid=/?condition=new&tag=bf-in-all-21 The set is available from the official Tolkien store: http://www.tolkien.co.uk/titles/79643/the-j-r-r-tolkien-collection-deluxe-edition-j-r-r-tolkien-9780007488209 But they don't ship to the United States for some reason, but it's much cheaper from Amazon UK anyway, including with shipping.

There's a matching deluxe slipcased edition of The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún as well, but I decided to pass on that as it's not related to Middle-earth. But I also picked up The Complete History of Middle-earth three-volume set from Abebooks for a decent price as well. That's another hard to find box set. It's still on its way. Hopefully there's a forthcoming deluxe edition of Unfinished Tales for the truly complete Middle-earth set of hardcovers.

becca69
12-29-2012, 01:50 PM
I saw that. It's confusing because there is no photo and there is a set that says sold out with a pic of the books you have but for a different price. I have collected the books individually but can't find Silmarillion. Now it looks like they have the individual one but I can't find it anywhere else that ships to US :(

The sold out set is the previous version, without the Tales From the Perilous Realm volume. They have different ISBNs. Otherwise they're the same, and the books themselves, too, obviously. This video below is a review of that four-volume set:

Haven't had a real pride and joy in a while, but just received this:

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/7311/photohsn.jpg

Very very awesome set, purportedly limited to just a hundred copies (the set itself, not the books, some of which are hard to come by regardless). It looks much better with the dusty shrink-wrap off. The paper used is amazing. Grant-quality.

Very Nice acquisition!!!

Not to be a "naysayer" or anything, but what printing and country are they?

Becca? "The Silmarrillion" as a single edition is not that hard to find. However country and printing are everything, but then again The Silmarrillion (without checking my notes) was published after Tolkien's death by his son, Christopher in the late '70's or early '80's (again w/o checking) They are relatively cheap to purchase compared to the virtual hornets nest that is the collectible LOTR and The Hobbit. This guy can help you out with questions. He is knowledgable, fair and easy to talk to.

This is from HarperCollins (UK). I'm not sure about the printing, but I doubt they're first editions.

I simply measured the books, and told him the size. For the bigsize 5 bookslipcase it was a bit more complicated, but all cases fit really well.

Oh, they are not first editions or you would be paying a mortgage on them!!! LOL My guess is they are a "Gift" edition done in maybe the '80's or later. Nevertheless, some of the reprinted GE's are incredibly well done and I have several as well. You buy what you like, right?

These are very handsome and UK editions are always a little more "special"!! IMHO

mae
12-30-2012, 07:37 PM
No no, they weren't done in the '80s but in the 2000s (the Lord of the Rings is the 50th Anniversary Edition). The Silmarillion is the 30th Anniversary Edition. I did not mean actual first editions, but first editions of these particular versions.

Regardless, a very handsome set they are!!! Kudo's!!!

It is though very cool how well most publisher's treat these books. Almost on a level of, dare I say, "The Bible" on each and every reprint. They are usually very, very well done and for affordable prices!!! IMHO

Not quite sure I understand you Becca. You mean this particular set w/the Silmarillion? Cause I have a true US 1/1 of it and I paid like $100 maybe even a little less. Regardless, this is a very handsome looking set!!!!

Without going back to my notes, I don't recall off hand if The Silmarillion was first published in the US or the UK. Getting the true firsts and such of these books is so damned expensive and confusing that I settled on editions I felt I could afford and was satisfied with that and stopped looking. Every once in awhile I see a really nice reprinted GE and will go for it, but other than that I spent too long researching and looking for my "Pass down "editions" that once I secured them I just stopped altogether. Yes, I'm only talking about this slipcased edition of the Silmarillion that is in the photo. These were produced by Harper Collins in the last few years and were sold individually as well as in this set. I have the other books (individually) that are shown in this set. All are slipcased and match each other. I guess less of the individual copies of the Silmarillion were produced or are just not readily available and are therefore upwards of $600 just for the one book.

I have a first UK trade copy that I got for $20.

Is the deluxe Silmarillion really worth around $600? The entire set cost me many times less that.

I don't know if it's actually worth that but that's what I've found for sale. I tried to get the set but couldn't find an affordable one (that was the first set that's sold out) - and they are 1st printings of that edition. So I collected them individually.

Hey Becca, I don't know if you've seen this, but The Silmarillion deluxe edition is available here for an okayish price: http://www.tolkienbookshelf.com/advSearchResults.php?action=browse&category_id=233&orderBy=title&recordsLength=25&numberRecords=42&recordStart=25&nextStart=51&prevStart=0&thisStart=26&thisEnd=50&p=2&fp=1

Okay, but only because you asked so nicely. Here is a picture of the S/L in its slipcase (yes, it's a bit dusty), next to the trade edition. Because the books use the same dust jacket (which doesn't even mention the pricing of the S/L), I took the jackets off for the picture. Behind the books, though, is one of my favorite collectibles: an untrimmed, unfolded Waste Lands dust jacket:

Here are the two books again, on their backs this time. The S/L has some lovely stamping on the front. One thing that surprised me is that the cover is a white cloth; for some reason, I though all the DTs S/Ls were done in a faux leather type cover:

http://imageshack.us/a/img268/7366/sam2994w.jpg

Here is the limitation page for the S/L (#545). It is printed on the front free end paper (on the reverse of the Jake and Oy picture you can see framed above). This makes me wonder if there were any leftover end papers that may not have been signed...

http://imageshack.us/a/img842/4761/sam2995n.jpg

My trade edition is special as well, because it has a nice little signed drawing of the Rose by Ned Dameron in it.:

http://imageshack.us/a/img28/9916/sam2996m.jpg

As I said, the Waste Lands is my favorite Dark Tower book. I don't have an infinite amount of money, so I direct a lot of my collecting $ towards that book. Here are two of my Dark Tower shelves:

I don't know how many are out there, but I have one. It's signed by Ned, but his signature was messed up somewhere down the line, so it wasn't sent to SK for his signature and inclusion in the book. I have a pic. in my collection thread somewhere if you're interested.

Robert Fulman-

Waste Lands is one of my favorite books by King, not just Dark Tower but overall. Love the Rose remarque!!!

I have had a nice relationship with artist Ned Dameron for some time now. He graciously signs books for me at Betts and from time to time he will do a special "piece" for me. Here are a couple. The first is a small remarque he did of my favorite scene in a S/L Waste Lands book...Aunt Talitha placing the cross over Roland's head. Some of you may recall, Ned did both a black and white remarque and a color remarque of the same scene in 2 trade editions I own. The second pic is one he finally sent me recently...when Ned did the original Aunt Talitha scene for me a couple years ago in the trade edition, he told me he has a prelim sketch somewhere of that scene that he would send me...he finally found it and sent it..it is a standalone piece which I may get framed.

Through a crazy random happenstance, I was able to purchase a S/L of my favorite Dark Tower book:...
Oh, you're gonna have to post more in-depth pics on that one!!!

1) I hunted down Ricky's signed (and crossed out) end-papers in his collection thread; very neat indeed.
2) I tried to buy Prime Evil from Betts Books last week, but it wasn't available. Lucky for me that I still had that money when I found The Waste Lands for sale. Ironic that David is also a fan of the Waste Lands and Ned Dameron. Elsewhere in my case, I have a sub-collection called "every Grant book with art by Ned Dameron" (that has pretty much just expanded to a collection of Grant books)
3) Thanks Merlin and Cook; Richard, you might recognize the three books in the top left of the bottom picture. They don't smell nearly as bad as they used to...

I'm really enjoying everyone's acquisitions, but maybe because I don't really collect limiteds (only when they're the first edition of the book, like the DT novels, or the only hardcover edition, like The Colorado Kid) is why I seem to generally not care as much for illustrations or remarques. I'm happy for those of you who do collect book for these features, but I'm just wondering if I'm the only one like that

Thanks for the info. I actually just found one on The Book Depository for $60.95 and free shipping. It's probably not a first like the one in the link but I'm ok with that... **twitch, twitch**

No your'e not the only one. I read, and collect Stephen King books because I like the stories. Nothing else matters to me.

I'm with you. I collect books from my favorite authors because of the stories themselves, not the illustrations. There's been a great debate about the new The Shining S/L and how it looks like some have decided not to buy it because of the illustrations. For me, the story is more important when it comes to books. I worry about the art when I am buying art.

No Pablo, you are not the only one, I only collect the 1/1 trades of his books. I do have a few gift editions from the first days of my collecting when I didn't understand the whole collecting world, but other then those I only have 1/1 trades, I do have a couple signed copies but that is only cause he has done a couple signings in Atlanta which is easy for me to get to in a reasonable time frame.
