So I decided to take Sub Press up on the latest grab bag offer for $150. Thought I get a few books from some new authors and maybe discover something new. Well, this is what I got:

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa411/ELazansky/Snapbucket/78058B6F-orig-1.jpg

The top two rows are all signed/limited editions. 8 in all! I was completely surprised. I think the retail value was over $700. Now, you can look at it that these books aren't worth that at all if they still had enough copies lying around to put in a grab bag. I still think is is a great deal.

It looks great in that frame. I have trouble finding decent frames that don't cost more than the art.

I have framed quite a bit of valuable art and never had the frame exceed the worth of the piece. That being said, it's not a "cheap" enterprise by any means. I've had framing exceed $500 for larger and more valuable pieces. Generally though, you're looking at $125-150 for a good job on an average sized piece. Do you have Aaron's or Michael's where you are? Both do pretty good work.

BTW, congrats SGC that's a fine looking piece!!!!

Bob posted pics of his copies a while back. The Book is 'Salem's Lot and it was bound by Betts Books using the page blocks from the Centipede S/L edition of 'Salem's Lot. It lacks the limitation page, and is thus UNSIGNED. It does however have the highest quality paper used for the S/L, and is fabulously bound. Bob also has the (I believe), 1/1 copy that Betts did.
The info is in posts #4607 and #4610 of the Collecting Questions thread (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?1283-Collecting-Questions/page185).
I do see that Bob's red copy appears to have red boards and a red slipcase, whereas mine has tan boards with a red spine, red corners and a tan slipcase. Interesting.
There may be more states of this book than I have seen.
Bob?

EDIT: The scale/size doesn't show up in the photo, but the book is ~ the same size as the S/L 'Salem's Lot.

I recieved a promo sampler of THE WIND THROUGH.. and i am sort of disappointed. They are about half the size of the 11/22/63 ones, and definitely looks cheaper too. From a marketing point of view i guess that it means more of those for the same cost.

Oh c'mon, RF!!! You can't post something like that with no story or explanation!!! It's against the "Rules"!!!! LOL

I spoke with Stu tinker today and he said there were 25 copies bound. There is the 1/1 That Bob owns, and 24 others. He said there were numerous colors including green and brown (not pictured). He said there are also subtle differences between the copies-combinations of boards, and different endpapers etc. and that (possibly) every book is unique. He also "believes" that they were sold at $175, but wasn't certain for sure.
It sure would be interesting to see what is out there. If anyone else here has a copy I would love to see it.

Initial price was $500. I wanted one but couldn't see paying that. Don't get me wrong, it is a gorgeous production, just couldn't get myself to grab one at $500 and later through Email From Stu, $400. At $400 didn't bite either.

I beg to differ with you. Stu bought the page blocks at "x" price. I don't know what "x" price was, but I can reasonably guess that they were >$50 each. I challenge you or anyone else to have 24 copies of over-sized pages to be bound for any "reasonable" price. Stu found that out after the 1/1 copy that Bob owns. Perhaps at the time $500 seemed outrageous-in fact now it seems steep, but I don't think you could go out today and solicit a price from a quality book binder to do 24 copies like these for anything less than $200 each. That's before you try and sell them for a ~50% markup.
As to you feeling these are" not very nice looking"-you are correct; you don't like the look, but having held one in my hands, I can say it is a finely made book, and artfully shows a different way to present 'Salem's Lot. If Stu hadn't at least tried on this, the page blocks would likely be sitting around gathering dust.

I certainly respect your right to like this "edition", RF, but I stand firmly by my opinion that it is a VERY unimaginative looking book, and thus- pointless. I mean, considering that Centipede did 3 different editions (and don't forget the trade hardcover), and the fact that they all turned out to be some of the nicest King editions ever produced- what's the point of making a few inferior, unofficial editions- and charging enough to make a nice profit? Uhhh, certainly not artistic integrity, imo.

But, hey- if you like it, you like it. :D

I think we agree to disagree. Stu wouldn't have been able to attempt something different if Centipede Press had not offered these up. Based upon the limitation sheet, Centipede had no place to go with the extra blocks of the S/L pages ( with or without actual signature page). Stu took a chance and perhaps that was the final financial blow that put him out of business. BTAIM, whether you like way the book was done or if you hate it-the information and images are here to enjoy, discuss, and debate. If Bob (or I) hadn't posted images and information, the history might have gone unnoticed.
I aim for this site to be the ultimate resource for information regarding Stephen King collecting-as such, it's a thrill to learn about/see, EVERYTHING there is to know about what was produced, rejected, changed, improved upon, ruined etc.
Hopefully we are not an inferior site in that regard.

Got some books from Centipede... Carrie: Studies in the Horror Film (signed and limited to 100 copies, but not by King) along with The Exorcist in the same series. Paperbacks exist too.
Can post pictures of Carrie later on if it can interest anyone. Also, I received Lee Brown Coye: A Retrospective. It's huge (no surprise with Centipede) and wonderfull, same size as the SKCollector's traycase of Salem's Lot.

Others in the box was Golem, Dead Titan, Waken!, Catacombs and Rapture

Now, the search continue for Chimera II....

Has anyone ever figured out what Dan from CD was talking about regarding the signed baseball cards from this edition? He said something about we should be comparing the cards to look for differences???

Hmmm, I guess I never did get around to posting that blog post, did I? :)

Some new things for me today as I continue to build my "King on a Budget" collection:

Sins of the Fathers S/L (a little chipping on the DJ, but the price was too good to pass up - would have passed if the DJ looked like this for something like Christine...)

Recently I have received the following: IT gift edition, UK 11/22/63 in slipcase, signed US 11/22/63 and the slipcase from CD, and some stuff still on order, such as TWTTKH from Grant and the UK trade from Amazon and need to pick up the US trade when it hits tthe stores. Nothing unusual or great but still some new additions !

Couple of new additions. First, "Black Colossus" by Robert E. Howard, published by Grant and illustrated by Ned Dameron. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't the signed edition, but that was my fault for misreading the description:

http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/9871/005gs.jpg

The book was published in 1979, so it looks like Ned Dameron predicted 3 years in advance that Schwarzenegger would play Conan:

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/4504/002dcc.jpg

Also, I've been looking for a bit of time for a "Handsome Sturdy Volume File" made by the Jesse Jones Box Corp. advertised in old issues of F&SF magazine. I finally tracked on down (in not awesome condition):

http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/876/003szn.jpg

Again, I was slightly disappointed that, even though the box is explicitly for this magazine, it is about an inch too tall for my Stephen King issues:

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/8666/004gxym.jpg

(I'm already over my disappointments, and now I am proud and joyful :))

Robert Fulman

(The reason I was wrong about Black Colossus is that there is no signed/deluxe version; I was thinking of Kull)

Again, I was slightly disappointed that, even though the box is explicitly for this magazine, it is about an inch too tall for my Stephen King issues:

Measure it up, then craft yourself a nice little cardboard box and wrap it in black paper or faux leather to fill up that extra bit of space. Looks like you might need a little bookend, too.

Just keep buying multiples until it's full! :) I'm sure there are also a few more King-related F&SF's you could add in to fill 'er up...the December '90 ish comes to mind...

Doesn't look like much in this scan from the eBay auction, but I received a very nice copy of the Signet 1st/1st PB printing of 'SALEM'S LOT. A little scuffing, a few minor creases and a slightly 'hollow' spine, but other than that the book appears unread. It's a lot cleaner than it looks in the pic. I'll take a better photo later.

Its been a good month so far, received quite a few new additions......posted some a couple pages back but have a couple more...I need to get pics taken will try and get that done.....
Received my trade UK slipcased edition of 11/22/63 from CD. As was mentioned in another thread itis very shapr looking case and book, they are a perfect match, wouldn't want to have my Uk edition any other way.

The big addition and one book i assumed i would never have...at least not until the kids were older and i had more money for my self.. UK 1st/1st Carrie....wanted to add that this was purchased from Shannon...transaction went super smooth, he was awesome to deal with and helped me get a book I have been wanting for a while at a price i could live with and afford ! Book came shipped priority insured and was packaged very well and arrived in excellent shape. The book was also exactly as described. Couldn't be happier.

It's Kilmer from Tombstone :P

Its more Russell than Kilmer in Tombstone.

Still looks more like DiCaprio to me.

Just watched Tombstone tonight, one of my alltime favorite movies (except for Bill Paxton, bad casting there in my opinion) ... on the other hand absolutely Val Kilmer's best career role (right above Real Genius). Great work Ryan!

Just thinking out loud, but is a full set of UK 1sts complete without the omnibus editions? I still need a couple of those.

If a complete US set of 1st is complete without omnibus editions, then the same would apply for UK.

True, but is that the consensus (US 1sts being complete without the omnibus)? I don't mind either way, I like the omnibus editions and I have the US one plus a couple of the UK ones.

By the way, how did you ever find all these UK large print hardbacks? There are some with really nice cover art but I haven't seen any for sale except for some very crappy ex-library copies.

*edit - I just checked your website. Did you sell all the large print hardbacks? I would have loved to get some of them.

I love Real Genius, too. On the subject of Kilmer roles, I thought he did a great job as Jim Morrison, but the movie itself is flawed. Did you ever see a flick called The Salton Sea?
Anyway, thanks!

(This probably belongs in movie discussion. Sorry, guys!)

Thanks! Let's get back on track, though...what became of your large print hardcovers?
