Nice stuff everyone...nate, oy, matt, ari.

Here is something that I got today. It is a set of untrimmed pages for the Viking edition of ROSE MADDER. I think it is what is commonly called a set of "F & G's" (or folded & gathered signatures). Someone has also made a nice custom traycase to house them. The pages are still attached at the top edges and are a slightly larger size than the finished book pages since they are untrimmed. I'm not sure what to make of the whole package but it was something I didn't have and it looks good on the shelf.

I like the RM F&G Bob. The slipcase looks good and well made. Have you any more F&Gs?

A few. Actually I think I misused the term F&G for these ROSE MADDER pages, which are really just untrimmed, unbound pages.

I'm not all that familiar with publishing terms and states of books, although I am learning. I think an F&G is a separate state of the book done sometimes before or in lieu of a proof.

The first time I heard the term was in a telephone conversation with Robert Weiner at Grant Books. I was asking him about prepublication states of THE DARK TOWER books. He said that they did not do a proof of THE GUNSLINGER but did "about a dozen F&G's for inhouse use." I had to ask what that was and he explained to me that they were folded and gathered signatures done for proofreading purposes. I have never seen one of those F&G's for THE GUNSLINGER for sale.

I've got a set of F&G's for the Grant edition of DESPERATION. And I've got a set of "blues" for the Whispers Press edition of F. Paul Wilson's THE TOMB which is a set of F&G's done on blue paper.

I think these terms "F&G's" and "blues" are common in the publishing business but I don't fully understand them and the difference seems murky at times. I'll try to get up some photos of what I have and if anyone with more specific knowledge of these distinct states would like to add to or correct what I have written I would appreciate it. The mods may want to move this discussion to a different thread.

From what I can find F & G are:

folded and gathered (f&g's)--A sheet or sheets from a print run, folded, cut, and generally made ready for binding, but not bound.

Sometimes they are used as revies copies or proof type states, but any untrimmed and unbound pages should be considered F&Gs.

If you'd like to start a seperate thread for this you can and one of the mods who has mod powers in this section could move the relevant posts.

Also, I found:

blues or bluelines--a printing, in blue only, from the final plates for a book. Usually only editors see these as a final check. If changes are needed, they have to be made to the film, which is expensive. Some publishers no longer use blues

Thanks for the definitions, Brice.

Here is a photo of my F&G's for DESPERATION. According to Robert Weiner 25 copies were done in lieu of a proof and, as such, represent the earliest published state of the book. I like these because by looking at them you get some insight as to the layout of the book that is not otherwise apparant.

Those are nice, Dave. I have not seen those before. I suspect that there are prepublication states of various kinds for just about every book. Most are done in small numbers for inhouse use and probably never make it to collectors. Bound manuscripts, F&G's, proofs, etc.

Here is an example of a book with both a proof and a state called "blues" (which looks like an F&G to me).

Stuart Schiff of Whispers Press published THE TOMB in 1984. It was F. Paul Wilson's first novel featuring Repairman Jack. He had made and sent out 10 proofs to reviewers (and then had to buy one on the secondary market for his own collection at a later date). He then did one set of "blues" to use as a final check prior to printing.

I'm a huge F. Paul Wilson and Repairman Jack fan and these items are among my favorites.

Very informative. Thanks.
What about setting up a separate thread for F&Gs or Blues. I have a couple F&Gs that people would find of interest I think and would add to the thread.

On the other hand, just how much discussion might their be on the subject? You are the key dude here so I will let you decide.

It is a 13" tall polyester resin sculpture of THE CYCLOPS from the 1958 classic The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. I have been looking for this for a while as it does not show up on ebay too often, and when it does, the seller usually wants over $200 for it.

I am a big fan of the old Ray Harryhausen films like 20 Million Miles to Earth, Clash of the Titans, and Mysterious Island.

And while we are on the subject of F&Gs, here is a little story...

You know, it's pretty cool. Whether we are old seasoned collectors, newbies or somewhere in between, one never stops learning something new by sharing with other collectors. That's the beauty of collecting, really. The acquisitions themselves are great but it is the new knowledge that really floats my boat.

So, take these F&Gs for instance. These are something I totally did not understand because I never really learned about the complexities of the publishing process before. Now I understand better what F&Gs really are and how they fit into the publishing process. This is cool why? Because I have owned a couple for many many moons. Never really paid much attention to them other than thinking they were cool, and they were mostly forgotten and an afterthought in my collection. Now, they have taken on a bit more prominance for me.

We all (I think) have heard rumors that there were maybe a handful of Proofs done for the first two Dark Tower books published by Grant Books -- The Gunslinger and Drawing of the Three, but no one (as far as I know) has ever seen a single copy, so they remain mythical to us collectors. We know that ARCs exist for the first 4 Dark Tower books later published by Plume, but the known Grant ARCs for the Dark Tower series started with The Wastelands as far as anyone knows. Which leads me to the tie-in with F&Gs, which as I now understand it, could be considered pseudo-ARCs given their position within the publishing process, or at least they can be considered copies BEFORE the true first editions are published.

So here is an F&G of Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three:

There's a lot of really cool and very unique items on the last couple pages of this thread.

Some of the blues and various printer states are fairly ironic to me.
I'm not in book design, but proofs like that are the kind of thing I see so often that I don't even think twice when I throw them in the garbage at work. It's a little surreal to see pieces like that considered collector's items and people paying a lot of money for them. As a collector though, I do understand the interest in them.

If I ever do any book related work, I'll have to make sure I save everything!

Bob's Rose Madder F&G's remind me of the Salem's Lot book blocks from Centipede Press. I haven't taken mine out of the box in a couple of years, but I seem to remember that none of the pages were trimmed out, but the folios were bound together.

Sir boomme, Is the UK Lisey's Story proof have a slipcase? I thought all the numbered ones (up to 100) came with a cardboard slipcase. In any case, those are some nice acquisitions!

You know, it's pretty cool. Whether we are old seasoned collectors, newbies or somewhere in between, one never stops learning something new by sharing with other collectors. That's the beauty of collecting, really. The acquisitions themselves are great but it is the new knowledge that really floats my boat.

Could not have put it better myself.

Never really paid much attention to them other than thinking they were cool, and they were mostly forgotten and an afterthought in my collection. Now, they have taken on a bit more prominance for me.

You will be making some nice new clamshell cases for them now, eh!

Yes, but the ones with the slipcases I thought were numbered 1-100, and the ones without the slipcases were 101-?. I have #078/100 with the slipcases and #185 without. Sir boomme's got #005/100 but no slipcase, thus my question.

I've not seen those before, David, and I think they are pretty cool. Robert Weiner told me specifically (I still have my notes from that phone conversation) that he did "about 50" proofs for TDOTT. But I have never seen one nor heard of anyone that has/had one. I agree that you probably have the earliest obtainable state of the book - at least that I have seen. Where did you get it? From Grant?

carlosdetweiller

i know these are pretty early production proof copies of some sort... what would you guys call them?

Those are interesting, Terry. At least one of the sets of pages seems to be a hybrid of photocopies of the original manuscript and photocopies of the typeset pages.

They seem to be for proofreading/copy editing done inhouse before final printing. Very cool.

RF-
Very informative. Thanks.
What about setting up a separate thread for F&Gs or Blues. I have a couple F&Gs that people would find of interest I think and would add to the thread.

On the other hand, just how much discussion might their be on the subject? You are the key dude here so I will let you decide.

Wiz
I was thinking the same thing. If no one else does it first, I'll break out a new thread for F&Gs/Blues. It'll start with this post here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showpost.php?p=98982&postcount=900), being sure to leave other posts in this thread if this where they rightly belong. I may not get to it until next week (as I'll be out of town this weekend), so if you feel motivated, feel free to move ahead with it.

In the meantime, I hope everyone continues to post 'em. This stuff is very interesting!

This book is my greatest love, as it's the first King book I ever bought, in 1975.

It got me started on a great journey which is still continuing. The latest stopover being Duma Key, which I enjoyed immensely.

I am now an avid collector of King fiction, but this book holds pride of place in my heart, and my collection.

It is priceless to me.

Well, here is my first King book. The movie tie-in paperback version of THE SHINING bought in 1980.

Do any of you remember the way that movie was hyped? We started seeing previews/trailers for it about 18 months before it was released. It seemed that everytime we went to the movies they showed the trailer that really didn't show much but it always ended with all the blood flowing out of the elevators.

When it was finally released (I think I went to see it the night it opened) I went out and bought this paperback the next day. Of course I loved it and have been reading King ever since. I think in many ways THE SHINING is still my favorite King book.

I don't really remember which King book was my first read, but I am assuming it was probably the paperback edition of Carrie. At the time, I was trying to buy EVERY fantasy/sf/horror paperback and magazine that I could find. Yes, I was collecting even back then. I read more than 90% of them too. I KNOW I still have the first paperback printing of Night Shift (with the cutouts on the cover showing the eyes) still, but I don't know whatever happened to the Carrie one. I have the movie tie-in version, but I don't think I have the actual first printing anymore.

My first King book was Eyes of the Dragon in the fifth grade, I think. I have always been a reader but that grabbed me in a way that nothing had before it. I had checked it out from the library so I will never own my first King read but I did just get the proof for it which has always been at the top of my "Need" list. This is as close as I can come to that first book but I am happy with it.

My first King book was a paperback copy of Chritine, I don't have it anymore. I read it quite a few time and watched the movie who knows how many times. Then when i found out abot first editions, my first purchase was hardback 1st / 1st of Christine which i do still have, along with the S/L version.
One thing i do remember is seeing a S/L Christine in a used book store in Orlando, Florida when i was in the Navy. I didn't know much about collecting or the S/L but i loved looking at that book. They wanted $200 for it and thought that was expensive, i didn't buy it !!! If i knew then what i know now i would have borrowed the money to get it !!!

In 1983 I was in the Army and driving through LA on my way to my new base assignment in El Paso. I stopped at John McLaughlin's store The Book Sail to pick up a S/L FIRESTARTER that I had reserved for $175 (a lot of money back then).

I spent quite a while at the store and had never seen anything like it. I was pretty new to collecting but he seemed to have everything I wanted. I remember seeing my first lettered asbestos FIRESTARTER. The price was $2,000. It might as well have been $20,000 because I couldn't have afforded it either way. Still, I think back on that day and sort of kick myself for not getting it. He also had Part 1 of THE PLANT which I had never heard of for $400, signed, inscribed and numbered not the unsigned designer copies. Oh what could have been!

Well as long as we are going down Memory Lane......

My first King book was a paperback of Pet Sematary that I bought around '86.

My first King movie in the theater was Christine (I think it was rated R and had to sneak in).

My first S/L was DT4

But, my very first "King Encounter" came in the 70s, when I actually auditioned for the role of Danny in the original movie of The Shining. They were looking for a boy with a midwestern accent (I was living in Chicago at the time) and my Grandmother sent in my picture. I was one of like 300 finalists if I recall.

Alas, stardome was not to be mine.

And, I did get my signed copy of Lisey's Story when we saw him here in Oregon. Retail price. :)

I have avoided lettered editions for that very reason. Too much $.

The only LETTERED S/L in my collection is Great Ghost Stories...and that is because there wasn't a NUMBERED S/L edition offered, and as lettered editions go, it was not too expensive ($500).

I also own a Lettered Quietly Now....but I would gladly sell it for the original sale price of $500. Heck, I would even take $450 for it!

John, I own:
- Blaze US
- Lisey's Story US
- Lisey's Story UK
- The Drawing of the three US Plume
- Song of Susannah UK
- Duma Key US
- Secretary of Dreams
- Rose Madder US
- Lisey's Story Spain (only 20 made)
- Wizard and glass Grant
- The Dark Tower Grant
- From a Buick 8 US
- SK The non fiction

And I have only two from other authors:
- The Terror (Dan Simmons)
- Comes the blind fury (John Saul)

I don't own too many but I can't complain! I never paid more than 25 dollars for any of these and the most were for free. :)

And I found this on my doorstep today. A signed copy of The Dead Zone.

It is a 10th printing in near fine condition...but since the signed copy I already have in my collection is a BCE and in nowhere near as good condition (look for it soon on ebay) I consider it an upgrade.

Sadly the Duma Key UK Arc didn't arrive yet so I think it's lost/stolen. It's the third time a good package gets lost.
1) Lisey's Story US ARC (when not a single one appeared at ebay yet)
2) Ceri's contest prize (The ideal Genuine man signed by King and Lisey's Story signed by King)
3) Duma Key UK ARC.

Well...sh*t happens..

Congratulations to you three. I am still looking for the UK ARC.

I have turned up three of the US proofs. In time I think the US proof will prove to be the scarcer of the two (only 100 sent out by a very reliable source) vs. 150 copies of the UK version. But so far I ain't got one of the UK's.

I would certainly love to work a trade if someone has an extra UK ARC.

Much better to have a signed copy....

Brice Leclert, Iain Wilson, Michael Bailey, James Kosiba, Neal Manning, Janka Ptacek, James Teat, Nathan Ford, Andy Gordon, and Mark Hammermeister all have personally signed by King copies.

They are the UK contest winners. If you Google their names you can get their email address. You can ask them if they want to sell their signed copies.

Example: Mark Hammermeister from Detroit - http://www.markhammerdesigns.com/

No, I'm not sure John. But going by the past record of Hodder and Stoughton, I would say they would be the same as the rest only inscribed personally by King. H&S are not exactly known for producing anything limited.

If they are different, all the more reason to contact the winners.

Got my copy of Dandelion Wine today. I really don't care about King's signature in that book (or have the money), so I went for the Bradbury signed/slipcased edition. Requested and received copy #2 to match my S/Ls of Farewell Summer (sequel to Dandelion Wine) and F451.

Looks like a fairly nice edition, but man is that slipcase a tight fit. I'm not sure the book will go back in once I add a brodart to the DJ.

Here is a copy of the "Limited Edition Gift Manuscript" of the first chapter of THE GREEN MILE. I have to admit that I really don't know much about this. It is a good sized book, about 8.5" x 11", black tape spine and reproduces King's original typescript for the first chapter.

According to my notes (and I really don't remember the source of the information) about 100 of these were done. Supposedly King signed six copies and they were used as prizes for some sort of a contest. If anyone remembers more details about the book or the contest please let us know.

I bought this from Charlie Fried several years ago when he was breaking up his collection.

No picture, but my latest acquisition is a Gunslinger Born #5 Sketch Variant. This was the only piece missing in my collection - I mean all editions, all variants, all sketch variants, the Daily Bugle the Marvel Previews, the Door Poster, the Omnibus hardcover collection, the Sketch Book, the Guidebook and the postcards!

I will say here and now that I am not going to collect the variants and sketch variants for The Long Road Home. This got just too costly!

I did get a few good deals on the Sketch Variants - unfortunatley I paid $75 for #1, and $50 for #'s 2-3; Got #4 for $35; #5 for $22, #6 for $15 and #7 for $15. That's a lot of cashola for (7) 48 page comics!

Yeah, both the 1st/1st Duma Key I ended up with and the 1st/3rd my friend got from the Sarasota Barnes & Noble were signed on the colophon page as well. I'm still okay with that, since they cost retail less 30%! 8)

I guess when he is in any particular store, it's almost a crapshoot where he signs. I have some other books of his signed on the title page (like Lisey's Story) and some signed on the blank front page. I even recently got a 1st printing of It he signed on the cover...

I actually kept two copies for myself.

One that was signed on the title page and one that was signed on the colophone page.

Same situation with The 2007 Best American Short Stories. I have two copies with each signature on a different page.

Yes, I am a dork. :panic:

Well, dork to dork, then, I see nothing wrong with that for a collector! :cyclops:

Received a signed Duma Key today. Not signed on the title page, nor the best signature, but a signed copy nonetheless.

Well I don't even have an unsigned Scribner Duma Key yet!

(I've got the Hodder & Stoughton hardback and paperback and the audiobook though)

Congratulations Jerome!
I've been thinking seriously about purchasing one. I really loved the book and I'd love to have it, but since I'm travelling in less than 6 months I can't spend that money.

I can sorta see what you guys are talking about, but I agree with Wiz you guys have some good eyes. I'll check when I get home, but I don't think it's double signed. It must be something weird with the camera reflection or something. I'll post what I find.

Nope. That is no reflection

The top signature is different from the bottom one.

You, my friend have a double-signed book (lucky bastard).

I owe you a Coke if that is not the case!

I think he'll find that you're right. I zoomed in on it and it's definitely a different sig.

Thanks for the offer RF but its low on my priorities at the moment. I will probably get it in a larger order later on.

Hey kids!

Here's a pic of SK's signature on my copy of Duma Key:

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/192/picture006co7.jpg

Also, here's a pic of the signed (on cover) 1st printing of It I got for $24.99 last week. It's kind of hard to see the 'g' in King, but I am pretty confident this is an authentic signature.

Finally, a signed 1st/4th of Cujo (I think tippy4 got the copy of Dead Zone from the same seller!)

I agree...nice stuff....beautiful signature on th UK Bag of Bones.

I have the audio DT1, but not in as good a condition.

I too am on the fence about that IT dust jacket.

And yes, I did recently pick up a signed Dead Zone...not sure from who though.

Where are you gguthrie????

I am dying to know if you have a double signed book?

Speaking of the DT audios, from time to time you see the S/L DT I audio. A couple years back I bought a S/L DT II audio and it is the only one I have ever seen.

Does anybody else have this item?

I've had one for a long, long time. I don't know if it is a hard to find item or not. I don't recall seeing one for sale recently, though.

It was if you were reading my mind Wiz.

I was going to say in my last post that I have NEVER seen the S/L DT2 audio on ebay (or anywhere else for that matter).

I was beginning to think they were a myth....not unlike Bigfoot.

I sold Rand one many years ago. I think he recently sold it. They are around but very rarely found.

here's one that should be in the Promo category. It's a signed flat never folded interior from the DT II audio ...note the lack of a limitation. And a couple of Scribner "The Year of the King" paper cubes in shrink wrap. number.http://i265.photobucket.com/albums/ii232/dhutch57/Promo.jpg

It would be nice if they would re-release them on CD, but I guess since they did release the CD audio of the "revised, expanded" Gunslinger, the chances are slim...

I'm not so sure as you about the 'IT' one though.

I think it's good based on the handwriting style, and the 'g' in King looks right, it's just hard to see in the photo. In any case, at least it only cost me $24.99!
