Two different signed limited editions from PS Publishing of Lawrence Block's "Random Walk". On the left is a slipcased hardcover edition, signed by Block and Spider Robinson and limited to 200 copies. This book has a dust jacket. On the right is trade hardcover, signed only by Block and limited to 500 copies. This book doesn't have a dust jacket; the boards are printed to look just like the dust jacket of the slipcased edition. I wasn't aware of this difference, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the differences between the two editions extended beyond the lack of slipcase and one signature.

Leaning on them is a 1966 Fawcett Gold Medal paperback original (i.e., there was no hardcover release) of Lawrence Block's "The Thief Who Couldn't Sleep", the first book in his Evan Tanner series. It's not in perfect shape, but it was pretty cheap ($3; not as cheap as the $0.29 I just paid for the sixth book in the series.)

I got this on eBay a couple of weeks ago but am just now getting around to showing it off. The artist Alex McVey was selling his "PC" copy of BILLY BLOCKADE. The listing said that he would be glad to add a drawing in the book (actually he mistakenly referred to it as a remarque but that is another story altogether). He took a little longer than advertised in sending the book so I e-mailed him and said he was doing a "few extra" drawings in the book. When I got it I was very surprised and pleased that he did five drawings in the book including the front and back endpapers. Alex seems like a really nice guy and I enjoyed trading a few e-mails with him.

Certainly not yet drawing the conclusion that the signature isn't authentic but I'd be interested in what a few of the other experts think.

Ok, Guys, one last image. The top sig is from my S/L Scribner 11/22/63 that I received yesterday. The bottom signature is the one in question from the Sarasota signing. I think there are a lot of similarities. The K definitely looks odd in the bottom sig but there are a lot of similar other points in both.

Thanks for all the opinions. I appreciate it.

I think you have to take into account his age and the fact that he is sitting there doing 6-850 signatures in a 4 hour window. I know from experience as a signatory that will take it's toll!!!!

AKC
11-17-2011, 06:32 PM
Good comparison.....

Along with the obvious differences with the "K", check out the bottom left of the "S". Completely different treatments/position as to where the Sig starts (inside vs. outside).....BUT, one could argue that, upon reviewing other sigs from that night, the "S" looks similar.

I'm going cross-eyed.

Final verdict, in my honest opinion, is that it is a forgery and if a return is possible, that you exercise that option.

I think there are a lot of similarities. The K definitely looks odd in the bottom sig but there are a lot of similar other points in both.

Thanks for all the opinions. I appreciate it.

I do acknowledge one thing. The first sig is compact whereas the second is more elongated and less detailed. That would give me pause!!!

Congratulations on the big book.

Just arrived 10 minutes ago:

Looks like a recent "cramped" SK signature:

BTW, feel free to compare this signature with the one in question.

I think it is a legit King signature; however, it's one of the uglier ones out there. I say take the refund and try to get one King didn't rush so much.

Rahfa
11-18-2011, 04:23 AM
Hmmm...not to be contrary, but not only do I think it's real, I don't see any problems at all in comparison to the legit S/L signature - which is one of the few (only?) times I've disagreed with Carlos, et. al. I actually think the S/L confirms it's real.

I think it looks basically identical, except for a few rushed signs from a signing. If anything, a forgery would look more controlled...that looks natural. Plus, he did give the wristband? So is he auctioning off other books?

I'm with Tippy and a couple others - I think it's real, no question. But - if you have ANY doubts, you should return it, because it will be annoying.

I think Bev said somewhere above in this thread (speaking about Kings signature) "King is making it difficult for us". Those words are very true and the signature in question proves that point.

My opinion........Yes, it's real.

I had similar doubts after receiving the pre-signed book in Dallas. Ms. Mod assured me that all the signatures were original King signatures, not facsimilies and not someone else signing, that he just had a helluva LOT of books to sign, he's old, etc!

If that's of any help...

idle, I am not an expert by any means, but when you first posted the picture I immediately thought to myself "Oooooh, that sucks, he got a fake." But then you posted the side by side comparison and seeing that, I would bet my life on it being real. The same hand definitely wrote both of those signatures.

WeDealInLead

I wouldn't want it because it's so damn ugly, but to my very amateurish eye, there's no doubt that the same tired, rushed person signed both books. That 'p' is identical and there is no hesitation in the signature at all.

Thanks for all the opinions, everyone. I’m going to keep the book bc I think it’s legit. I didn’t have a doubt about the signature until the posts here had me second guessing myself. I’ve been collecting King for more than 20 years and feel like I can spot a fake sig 99% of the time. Looking at the two signatures together, there’s no doubt in my mind they came from the same hand.

I paid $145 for the book. Even if someone somehow proves it’s a fake, it won’t be the most costly collecting blunder I’ve made. That honor still belongs to the $175 Rose Madder proof in my collection that I bought way back in the day.

Thanks again for all the discussion.

Right call - I think that first scan made it look really bad and so everyone sort of had preconcived notions, but seeing it side by side (which is when I saw it for the first time) clinched that it's real.

Haha..hardly. I think this was just one of those sigs with a lot of honest disagreements, for valid reasons. It will always be the challenge of the flatsigned sigs in the days after an event...especially with his sig as rushed and cramped as it is.

The one on the far left is my S/L edition. I also own a kindle edition.
I wish everyone on this site would take the time to order this from amazon, Kindle or otherwise.
It's really a good story & I hope to see a sequel.

I don't think it's in violation of copyright if you, like you said, make/upload the images yourself and keep the product for your own use. I think the issue is when you start selling it to other people. So yes, I would think that there's something funny about that.

I have completed my collection of "The Lawrence Block Library", published by G&G Books in the mid-90s. The "library" consists of two books, "In the Midst of Death" and "Ariel". As Lawrence Block tweeted to me:
Ah, that great publishing triumph! They had a sellout w/ the first, a flop w/ the second—and that was the end of that... Let this be a lesson learned to all you aspiring small publishers: publishing a limited edition of the second book in a popular series is good, following that up with a book no one has ever heard of (and is in a different genre from what the author is known for) will drive you out of business. "Ariel", signed and limited to 500 copies, is still available at lawrenceblock.com for the bargain price of $10. "In the Midst of Death" is harder to come by cheaply. My copy is a presentation copy (or publisher's copy). It is signed and numbered "P.C. 14" on the title page, but is lacking the limitation page:

That looks pretty cool. I wouldn't mind getting a set of those.

I received my copies today of this.

I really like Jill Bauman's remarques ... the only problem (and this is why I didn't purchase one of Betts' remarques) is that she only does the same five or six illustrations. And they're mostly from the illustrations she's done for the books themselves. A remarque, to me, is something that is unique. I don't want to have a conversation that goes like this ... "Oh, you have a tiger face remarque in your Dead Zone also? Niiiiiiice ..." :(

Authorman, I like your shrinkwrapped paperback boxed set collection a lot! Thanks for helping me shape my future collection by putting even MORE ideas in my head, lol.

Nice stuff everyone. I was expecting a box of stuff today (it was mailed off two Fridays ago), but no luck. All I have to show for myself this week is a Lisey's Story ARC, which I'll post in my Collection Thread a little later, I think. Yay? lol

Patrick
11-26-2011, 11:14 PM
I understand what you're saying about how a drawing by her probably won't be unique, but I just factor that into the price I'm willing to pay. I won't go as high as I would for something from another artist where I feel there is more variation, but still I really like Bauman's work.

Yeah I totally agree. I could see how that may not matter to someone but that's also why I wouldn't want one--at least as badly as if they were unique. Chadbourne's great in that he may do some that are similar but I've never seen any of his larger/color remarques that looks exactly the same as another remarque. It is cool that she does them at all--I do like them :)

Extremely jelaous of those.

Here are my recent scores. First are 3 Gunslingers. It's a first edition and an ex-library but in remarkably good condition. No stamps on it that I can find. I'll replace the DJ eventually but for now, it'll do. The price was right too:
http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/4651/miamiamia014.jpg

5 new (to me) anthologies. I also have a few new paperback anthologies with King's stories but I don't feel like posting those.
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/5321/miamiamia015.jpg

Only the omnibus edition is new. First printing. Cost = $3.
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8679/miamiamia019.jpg

4 new Tim Lebbon books. Slipcased one is limited to 100.
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2306/miamiamia016.jpg

The Hollow Man by Dan Simmons is the newest one in this picture. Phases of Gravity is a UK edition. Makes the new US S/L look really cheap.

All very nice. I enjoyed The Hollow Man by Simmons.

How come you don't like his sci-fi books? Just not a sci-fi fan in general?

I'm finishing Hyperion and the way it's plotted reminds me of It. Each character has a back story and reasons why're they're 'there.' I don't want to ruin it for anyone but characters, their stories and the 'monster' in the book definitely have a heavy It feel to them.

Me either. I read HYPERION but struggled to finish it and have no inclination to read the subsequent book. It took me two tries to get through THE CROOK FACTORY (not sci-fi), but, once I did, I really enjoyed it.
