That IS impressive looking!. Is this 1 book or several books in that picture?.

Nope it's one book. The picture shows the traycase, jacket and book. I took the jacket off for the photo.

Thanks guys!

It's kinda expensive but it's an impressive looking book. One thing of note, you do not get a King signature with this book. None of the authors signed it since it's 25 year old book. But the editors and illustrators all signed it.

Matt,

My kids are telling me that 5 minutes after I am dead and buried that my collection goes up on ebay! I tell them "not over my dead rotting body! The will says that if no one in the family wants them (and that they can never be resold - only passed down through the generations) to put them in my casket - I will problaby have plenty of reading time wherever I am headed once I reach the clearing at the end of the path" then I tell them to make sure to get an extra large casket! :-)

They all look at me funny when I say "the clearing at the end of the path!"

Haha!!! Good one, CR!!!! I don't have kids, so will likely opt to have someone sell them--in all hopes that they go to good collectors who will care for them, as I did.

Edited to add, I may opt to be buried or cremated with a DT book. What the hell, right??? I'll be sure it's just a Trade version. I don't want to be labeled a book-burner by you guys!!!

i got my #'d dark forces limited yesterday... now i'm waiting patiently for my lettered version.

BTW... back in 1990, i was reading stephen king's newest novel (that i owned) "It" to my mom who was bed bound with emphysema(she was a huge king fan, she gave me my first king novel "carrie" back when it was a new release). i didn't quite finish reading the story to her before she died.
while i stayed with my dad in the funeral home for 2 days, (he refused to leave her, and since the funeral director was a friend of his, - he allowed us to sleep on the floor both nights) - i finished reading the story to my mom, then placed the book in her casket with her. she was buried with a first edition stephen king.

Matt, anxious to see the pics when they are ready.

As for me, my biggest dilemma in the coming 6 months is that I will need to move my entire collection from my work office to home as my work is relocating to a smaller space and they are eliminating private offices for everyone. So that means bringing 400+ books home plus artwork etc. My wife is less than thrilled with this move. While we have a sizeable house, that's a lot of books to store safely (I have 3 kids and 2 cats).

I am thinking (thinking mind you) of downsizing <wizard shudders> my collection, but we will see.

Wizard, I'm truly sorry to hear this. Back a long time ago, I worked for a large communications company and I also had my own office. They had a downsizing and I ended up in a cubicle. I hated it. Good luck in the move of your books. Be sure, no matter what, they are placed in a safe location.

wizardsrainbow
12-29-2007, 02:55 AM
The move is a definite, I just do not know when. Once committed to the space, it will take 3-4 months to renovate before we move in. I have had a LARGE private office for 16 years now, and as any of you know, one accumulates A LOT of crap in that time. It's gonna be hard. And transporting that many books safely will be a pain in the ass given that I live in CT. Even if I box them up, it will take several round trips to the City to move them all. I cannot bear to leave them in the hands of someone else to ship (like the USPS). Besides, the cost would be huge to ship. Will figure it out somehow.

Ari_Racing
12-29-2007, 09:40 AM
Wiz, I think the best would be to start packing and moving them from now on to your house.
This way you'll have chances to find out that all can be placed in your house and also, since you'll be bringing one or two boxes once or twice a week, there's a big chance your wife won't notice how many books are you bringing home.

TRUE! :)

It's so hard to find signed trade with signature dated in the year of publication. Takes forever to find those in fine condition. I gave up in the case of 'IT'. I don't know when I'd ever find one in Carrie or Salem's Lot. I'm sure it will cost me my left arm if I ever find one!.

Seriously Bob? He's a dentist as well or am I missing a joke?

Bob, you were with Rand in 1998 when Steve signed the UK 1st Carrie. Do you own a signed set of all 3 as well? And you or Hutch can tell us the story of how there reportedly is a signed Carrie inscribed to his mother out there somewhere.

Stuart Schiff D.D.S. is a practicing dentist in Binghamton, New York. I haven't talked to him in about three years but I am almost certain he was still practicing dentistry at that time. He mentioned something about having to get to his office.

I was at the 1998 signing at Betts Bookstore with Rand and bunch of other collectors. It was one of the most enjoyable weekends. Most of us brought several books and debated in my room at the Phenix Hotel (yes, that is how you spell it) on which books we were going to get signed. I was with Rand when he decided to get the UK CARRIE signed but I wasn't in line with him and I didn't actually witness the signing (if that is what you are asking).

I've got a couple of really nice copies of the UK CARRIE, but neither of mine are signed. I've got four (I think) signed copies of the US edition including two that were inscribed/signed at that first signing at the Maine University bookstore in April, 1974.

I've got Bill Thompson's copy of the ARC of CARRIE but, unfortunately, it is not signed.

I've heard of a collector in the UK who has Doubleday proofs of King's first five books, all inscribed to Bill Thompson but that is second hand information. If true, it would be the only confirmed Doubleday proof of CARRIE that I am aware of.

I don't know the story regarding King's mother and a signed copy. I vaguely remember reading something (probably in one of Beahm's books) about it.

Rahfa
01-05-2008, 08:52 AM
The story about Carrie and his mother is basically the very first copy of "Carrie" that King recived, he immediatly signed to his mother...but it's since been lost, and the joke is if it ever turned up, it's officially the very first copy of any book he ever signed.

It might have been a proof copy for that matter...I can't remember all the details, but the gist of the story is the same.

Speaking of new "pride and joys" I got Bill Clinton to sign a book yesterday and was almost shot by Secret Service for my troubles...

Very, very nice, Jerome. Signed too!.

Dali is one of my absolute favourite. Btw, Dali exhibition is touring the US. The next one is in Florida and also in MOMA, LA (moma.org), in case anyone is interested. Here's the details :

This exhibition brings together more than 100 works by Salvador Dalí (1904–89 including major paintings, photographs, drawings, and films to explore the central role of cinema in his work as both an inspiration and an outlet for experimentation. Film was a passion for Dalí and cinematic vision became a model for his own work. The exhibition will display collaborations between Dalí and legendary filmmakers including Luis Buñuel, Walt Disney, Alfred Hitchcock, and the Marx Brothers alongside his paintings to show the way ideas, iconography, and pictorial strategies are shared and transformed across mediums. The exhibition will include some of the most provocative works of the early twentieth century including Un Chien Andalou, a film made with Buñuel, which features the almost unwatchable sequence of an eye being slit by a razor; L'Age d'Or, another collaboration with Buñuel and one of the landmarks of surrealist film; as well as such important paintings as The First Days of Spring and Illumined Pleasures. The exhibition will also consider Dalí as a consumer of popular culture—he loved the bizarre slapstick humor of Hollywood comedians, such as Harry Langdon, Charlie Chaplin, and Buster Keaton, and saw such mass entertainment as an antidote for what he perceived as the pretensions of high culture.

The exhibition will extend into MoMA's theaters, where examples of the popular and avant-garde motion pictures Dalí treasured, those that he made, and the films created by his fellow surrealists, will be screened. The exhibition will also be on view at Tate Modern, London, England (June 1–September 7, 2007),the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California (October 14, 2007–January 6, 2008 ) and the Salvador Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida -February 1–June 1, 2008

That is a great issue and one that is, IMO, undervalued by collectors. I absolutely loved reading the preface to THE SHINING, called "Before The Play." For me it is personal. My intro to King came after I saw the Kubrick movie. I wanted to know more about the hotel's prior occupants and I bought a paperback of THE SHINING, read it and have been hooked on King since. The book explained most of what I wanted to know but it wasn't until much later that I read "Before The Play" and said "Finally! This is what I've always wanted to know!"

I'm anxious to sit down and read that myself. It is the primary reason I got it, but I want to be careful with it cause the spine is tight as hell. I can open it maybe an inch or so, but no more. I'm not good at the whole grading thing, but the only markings I've found at all is a paper thin white line along the spine just where it meets both covers. As for the story, I was able to read the version in TV Guide years ago. I don't have it anymore. Do you know if there is a significant difference lengthwise? I know it was excised in that TV Guide.

they were 2 editions published in May, 1979... Nothing to tell which one was the first printed (at least according to what I know..)

I need to find the other one now, but this is the one i always wanted, the one that i always considered at the true 1st/1st... :-)

Nothing earth shattering but I just got this the other day. PS Publishing is doing a 50th Anniversary edition of Ray Bradbury's DANDELION WINE. Stephen King has written a new introduction for this. PS Publishing is doing the book in several states and both King and Bradbury are signing the special slipcased edition. I don't think the books are ready for shipment yet, but here is the proof copy that I just got.

Haha...yeah, I'm not sure what the "weak dollar" has to do with it...

It's a neat idea for a book, but the King signature just because of an introduction is a bit of a money grab. I'm not sure Bradbury books have been great investments - but I know we're talking about collecting...and I don't collect Bradbury...

I agree....and, there's 100 copies of the King/Bradbury edition...that's obviously not a lot, but for that price it's also not that unique. Maybe at 25 copies it becomes a more price-appropritate "lettered" edition. But, who knows, maybe the production values will be really good.

Ah, that changes things...I don't have a problem with them raising the price as an edition sells through...

What did you pay when you bought it? (and...what's with the 2-year wait??)

I'm not sure why the book was delayed. Typical small press problems, I guess.

I don't think they had decided on a price when I paid back in 2006. Pete just guessed at what he thought the price would be and I said "OK" and paid it.

The weak dollar has to do with the book is essentially double in price to anyone fom the US, particularly when comopared to two years ago for the Pound. Dollar exchange,

about the PS Publishing book, from their website :

The deluxe slipcased ($750.00 approx.) edition is signed by both Ray Bradbury and Stephen King. This edition also includes a second book: Summer Morning, Summer Night, featuring all the other Greentown, Illinois stories... some of which are previously unpublished.

N.B.This PS Publishing deluxe edition of the classic novel by science fiction grand master Ray Bradbury, with an all-new introductiom by Stephen King, includes an additional volume - Summer Morning, Summer Night, edited by Donn Albright and Jon Eller - of all the other Greentown stories, both published and unpublished.

It's not only signed by both..

Yeah, I guess I get that...I suppose if one had speculated in English currency a couple years back, you could now get it at a better price.

At anything above $500 US, I think it's still overpriced for a King-only collector...but it does have the extra content that's been pointed out, and for a Bradbury collector it would be a good item.

This is not a King related item, but I was over a my parent's house today and my mom gave me a Brer Rabbit album with an 11 page story illustration. I found a listing on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Disneyland-Brer-Rabbit-Album_W0QQitemZ270204004489QQihZ017QQcategoryZ306Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) for it, and although not worth much it's worth a lot to me as my mom used to put this on for us as kids to listen to. She also gave me a Snow White album with illustrations as well, but Brer Rabbit has always been my favorite! :D

I hoped it was a good price. It's so hard to judge value these days. For some reason, the book seller had the author(s) as "Stephen K. and Peter S." So, it wouldn't come up if you put "King" in the search. Weird.

I never noticed that. I would not pay extra for the slipcase, especially as all the corners are a mess. He describes it as Fine, but I would say it was only Good+.

He has had them advertised for years. I would offer a much lower price quoting the condition of the slipcase.
