A First Edition Salems Lot is the only King written book that I do not have! So far the ones I have found were too rich for my blood or too badly damaged. I saw one on ebay fairly cheap but it was a Library Edition in Very Bad condition. I am not a perfectionist but broken spine and torn up dust jacket and someones name inside are not what I am looking for.

Fortunately patience is one of my virtues! :-)

Just ordered a traycased Knowing Darkness. Mine will come with a signed Dameron Dark Tower print.

I've never been treated so well by any publisher. The shipping would've been $125 to Canada so I chose to have it sent to a friend in Michigan. We had a falling out, I emailed Jerad and he offered to send it to me for $375 shipped. The book alone ended up costing 250.

(I'll probably end up sending him the actual postage once I have some money but that gesture was incredible).

I don't usually collect ARCs, but since this one is signed, I was interested.

It went unsold at $143 shipped, so I asked the seller if he would go $117 shipped and agreed.

Well, I am thrilled. I just made a deal and purchased the following:

Description: UK first edition THE STAND hardcover, published by New English Library in 1979 and SIGNED, INSCRIBED & DATED BY STEPHEN KING to one of the NEL staff during the small gathering at NEL offices in 1979 to celebrate the launch of the book.
It is signed FOR BERNIE WITH ALL GOOD WISHES, STEPHEN KING, MARCH 27, 1979. King spelled Bernie wrong and crossed it out to correct it - the book comes with a letter from bernie himself, who attended the launch. The dust jacket is nice and bright - not faded. It has light wear to the extremities but is attractive overall. States £6.95 IN UK ONLY. The book is nice and tight but has light wear to the extremities. The copyright page confirms the first publication in the UK in 1979. A super copy.

When I purchased my personal copy of the 1st edition UK Stand from Hutch awhile back, we had a long discussion about the rarity factor of this book. If I recall correctly, Hutch told me that he thinks this could be the most rare 1st edition of the early UK King books, maybe no more than 1000 of them. Even if not true...you just do not see this book for sale anywhere. And this one is signed at the launch party...you probably won't find a signature much earlier than this one is my guess. Besides, The Stand is one of my favorite stories and now I own signed copies of every hardcover edition published of this title....my 1990 Complete & Uncut edition is inscribed to Don and Shirley Grant, founder of Donald Grant Publishing.

That is supercool, Wizard. The Stand is probably my favorite of the non-Tower books (if you can call it non-Tower), it was the first of King's works I read and the one that hooked me for life. Whether it is the rarest of the UK editions seems somewhat irrelevent, because it looks like a very rare find for the provenance alone. Congrats!
Also--Stockerlone had to take the Rage US first off his sell list--I won his ebay auction early this morning! So I am thrilled as well. Mutual thrillment all around.

03-29-2011, 10:31 AM
Congrats all around.....for me, I was afraid that Bob or any of the other "serious" collectors would beat me to this Stand book. It was just listed on ABE.com and I happened upon it at the right time. I think I likely paid "full price" for the book but as I said I negotiated a few hundred $ off his asking price.

Fantastic addition to your collection, David! Our forum member 'George At Ramstein' should start another tally thread - one for the UK THE STAND. I'm curious what percentage of the rumoured 1000 copies we collectively own among our gang here... I have three copies (but none of them as nice as yours), so that's 0.3% for starters.

harrison ryan

And so I managed to put together a complete set of Bachmans for $269...plus about $40 for shipping (the jury is still out, as stocker is so cool he's refunding me any difference between his estimate and actual cost). All are US first/firsts. I think I did pretty well(?). My copies of the Running Man and The Long Walk are NF to NF- bright, unread copies with very few flaws...looks like the Rage was VG or VG- from what I could tell (a stain to the bottom leaves, a bit of minor edge wear and a few light reading creases to the front cover), and my Roadwork was the real bargain: $3.20 for a Good+ copy that is in pretty good shape (a few very light creases to the front cover, a small pinkish stain on the back) but a bit dingy overall from improper storage. It came in on a book buy at work (used bookstore) and a co-worker actually rescued it out of the trash for me, thus igniting my recent Bachman obsession...what do you guys think? I'm still new to this, and I'm rapidly learning thanks to these boards.

The UK editions? Aargh! Don't tempt me! Actually, I don't find them nearly as appealing because I don't like the cover art and design as much as the US/Canadian versions, with the exception of The Running Man. Spiky fist dude? That one's sweet.

Good job on Danse Macabre. Was it an internet acquisition or did you find one in person? OOP--looks like your last post answers that!

Very nice, biomieg! There's still some SK 1sts that I've been unable to find in great condition (Danse Macabre being one of them) so I know how great it feels to check it off the list. Congrats!

Nice acquisitions, everyone!

I own a 1st/1st of the UK Stand in NF/F condition that I grabbed off eBay a few years ago at a very reasonable price. This was way before I realized just how scarce it is.

Great buy, David.

A truly great acquisition for your collection. I've seen some very desirable older King books that are at the optimum collectability for lack of a better word. Impossibly perfect condition and dated exactly at the right date, some with very alluring inscription. The problem seems to be for me trying to judge if the seller are already pricing them ridiculously, would it even be worth my while to offer a reasonable price (not a lowball offer) that is most likely half of their asking price. I understand that an exceptional copy will not be acquired in the lower price range and I have paid top end prices for certain things. I'm sure everyone have their own technique in this situation

Received this today:

SIGNED PET SEMATARY (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=160558898698&si=pEMDUDMWM6vuU1rheakCx4SOZQ0%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT#ht_4079wt_926)

It is not a first edition, nor is it in the best shape, but the price was fair and I am confident the signature is good.

And since I do not have a signed copy of this title, it will do just fine until a signed 1st comes along.

Hello all, been trying to catch up on the ongoing conversation before I posted my first message (currently on page 102), but I figured I can multi-task, so I'm gonna Memento it and post at the end while reading from the beginning.

Shannon, 26 year old male, always been a Stephen King fan, and sometime this year I decided to turn my "I buy them because I want to read them" books into my "I buy them because I have an extra $600 laying around and I need to check that edition off my checklist" books. I'm just starting, and my King collection is nothing out of the ordinary, but I do have three items I wanted to show off, one in particular:

Firstly, I have a 'Salem's Lot second state dustjacket on a non-first edition book, lol. Not sure how that happened, but I responded to a "Hey ya'll, I gots a lots of Steven King boox for sall!" ad on Craigslist (gotta love those) and bought about 70 HC and PB books for about thirty bucks. With that, I got maybe 10-15 first editions, a bunch of good looking regular HC and PBs and then the 'Salem's Lot book. Good deal.

Secondly (I type a lot, by the way, sorry in advance), and my first and only (at the moment) signed by Stephen King book is the new S/L Legacies anthology that came out not too long ago. $250 from Betts Books, love that place, and I'm sure you all know whose signatures are in it so I won't go into it. But I love it. This is probably my pride and joy, but to you collectors, I think I have something more rare. I haven't seen anything like this on the internet or in any of your conversations.

I have what I assume is a pre-publication package for a Skeleton Crew Signed Limited Edition. I'll post some pictures, but it comes in four parts, all in various forms of editing and corrections. It lookslike it was send out to editors and then compiled back together again. I'll post some pictures. Has anyone seen anything like this?

I read that there were only 5000 of these issued (which, for a Harry Potter title, is very small). I'd love to find out more about this edition.

These are a couple of cases that were made for a long-time collector here on the corner. I'm sure he'd be interested in reading your opinions.....

Skeleton Crew

This is made for the lettered edition (it has an additional support on the bottom of the case to protect the original soft leather 'case') but, as you can see, it basically fits the numbered edition also.

Hello all, first year collector here. I'm Shannon. 26 year old male stationed in Las Vegas. I've been in the Air Force for about six years now. Dislike the job, love the benefits, lol.

ANYWAY, hello. I've been starting this thread from the beginning (currently on page 102) and was going to wait until I catch up on the ongoing conversation, but I've never been one for patience anyway. So, I'm gonna post at the end while reading from the beginning, lol.

My collection started as a "Man, I sure do buy and read a lot of Stephen King books ..." to "Man, I should start some kind of collection" to "Woah! Look at all the cool stuff I can collect!". It's my first year really collecting, unfortunately I don't have the space nor funds to do what some of you supercollectors do. I'm reading in the forums the "hauls" some of you get on a regular basis. Ridiculous! And I see in some of your pictures that you have expensive books just sitting on the shelf next to other expensive books. Good stuff. So anyway, I'm slowly but surely building my collection. I have three pride and joys, two of which might not be of any interest to you guys, but the third I haven't seen or heard of anywhere. That might be because it is rare or that might be because it is so common you guys don't even bother with them.

Anyway, my third pride and joy (going backwards) is a 'Salem's Lot second state dustjacket. Just the dustjacket, because some idiot put it on a non-first edition book. I got it in a lot I bought off of Craigslist here in Vegas. Got some other stuff from the lot, but that was the best. I think I bought like 70 books for $50 of something.

Secondly, my first (and only, at the moment) Stephen King autograph. Little guessing game, although it's actually pretty easy: Signed by EDITOR Richard Chizmar, AUTHORS Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, Richard Mathson, David Morrell, Peter Straub, William F. Nolan, George Clayton Johnson (Ray Bradbury and Robert Block did not sign), & ARTISTS Michael Apice, Jill Bauman, Glenn Chadbourne, Alan M. Clark, Stacy Drum, Keith Minnion, Mark Nelson, Phil Parks, Eric Powell, Erik Wilson, Gahan Wilson. I love it. My first signed, my first signed/limited, and it looks great too.

That is probably my pride of joy, but like I said earlier, I haven't seen any of these around. Online, on here ... I think they're officially called galleys? But I'm not sure. Anyway, let me post the first picture and then I'll add some more.

It's a Skeleton Key S/L (because it includes Becka Paulson) Pre-Publication Package that looks like it was sent out to different editors who made hand corrections on it and then sent it back and they were all compiled. It's in four different parts and there is a LOT of paper to this thing. It's just sitting in a box at the moment. Anyway, first pic, to see if I'm doing it right:

Damnit, it did it again! Holding back the message until the moderator approves it. I think it's because I added pictures. Can the moderator please approve my first two messages? The third is just kind of a rewording of the first one. You can delete that. Thank you.

OK, this will be the last time I attempt to write about my three Pride and Joys, lol! I'm tired of writing the same thing over and over again only for the internet to eat it up, never to be seen again!

OK, hello. first year Stephen King collector, and I love seeing pics ya'll's pics of your collections and rare books, I just wanted to show you what I have. Nothing too crazy, but I love it.

My number three pride and joy is a 'Salem's Lot Second State dustjacket. Just the dustjacket because it's on a non-first edition book, lol. Don't know how that happened, but it was one of the books I bought in a lot that I found on Craigslist a few months ago. Something like 100 books for $75. There were some other stuff in there as well that I needed to add to my collection, the more common first editions, Dreamcatcher, Rose Madder, that sort of thing, but this was definitely a surprising find. Now I just have to find a 'Salem's Lot first edition book without a dustjacket and I'm set! :)

My number two pride and joy is actually my favorite P&J, my first and only King signature, as well as other gems, lol. I'll post the signature list and you can tell me what book it is: Signed by EDITOR Richard Chizmar, AUTHORS Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, Richard Mathson, David Morrell, Peter Straub, William F. Nolan, George Clayton Johnson (Ray Bradbury and Robert Block did not sign), & ARTISTS Michael Apice, Jill Bauman, Glenn Chadbourne, Alan M. Clark, Stacy Drum, Keith Minnion, Mark Nelson, Phil Parks, Eric Powell, Erik Wilson, Gahan Wilson. Just bought a copy from Betts for $250 not too long ago. I love it.

And my number one is selected as my number one simply because I haven't seen anything like it anywhere else online, here, Betts, anywhere. That might be because it is rare and no one has it, or because it is so common that no one cares to collect them. It is a Skeleton Crew pre-publication package. It looks like the manuscripts were sent out to different editors, and then compiled back together again. It is in four different sections, and it is a LOT of paper. Here are some pics. Has anyone seen anything like this before? It's OK to bust my bubble, I'm new at this, lol. Anyway, PICS (or, links, seeing as how pics don't wanna work for me, lol):

It is unique and very collectible. Some of the more finished pages look like the Scream/Press limited edition of the book so I think you have an archive of material that Jeff Conner used in making the book. It looks like several stages of copy edited and proofed pages. In my opinion they do have collectible value to a small group of collectors. I think I see what looks like a submission manuscript from Stephen King. It may or may not be photocopied. If present that would be the crown jewel of the package. If there were some way to get documentation that it was THE submission manuscript for the book then you would have something of substantial value. It's an impressive collectible. Congratulations.

Shannon

Hello all, thanks for the comments, I appreciate it.

- carlosdetweiller, I don't see any submission manuscript, I don't see anything from King himself. It just looks like a bunch of different editors' hand corrections. But then again, I'm new at this, lol. If you're talking about the one-sided stack of white paper sheets, even they have some corrections made on them, which I don't know if that's normal or not.

I haven't figured out how to display it yet, there's SO much paper. Right now it's just in a cardboard box. My King books are under the K section of my two bookshelves (one fiction, one nonfiction). But I plan on shortly making a shelf that runs lengthways long enough so I can put all his books on it, Carrie to Full Dark, No Stars, the best edition of each that I have ... And then something else to display my magazines (such a pain in the ass) and anthologies and extra stuff. And then this ... box!

I talk a lot, sorry.

In your image numbered 023 there are eight stacks of paper. Four on a top row and four on a bottom row. Stacks 2 and 3 on the top row and stacks 3 and 4 on the bottom row look to be manuscript pages similar in style to manuscript pages generated by King's typewriter or, more probably, word processor. I would think that King submitted something along these lines to Scream/Press. Likely yours are photocopies that Conner made to work with but who knows? King likely sent a photocopy to Conner in the first place. It would be nice if you could track down Jeff Conner and get him to sign a letter attesting to the fact that the submission copy is among your pages. But I doubt you can do that. Since Scream/Press folded and left a lot of paying customers with undelivered books Jeff seems to have dropped off the face of the earth.

Shannon
03-31-2011, 07:51 AM
Ahhh, I see what you're talking about. Upon closer inspection, it looks like there was a semi-finished manuscript and then someone made hand corrections with black ink, then photo copied it, which is what I have. And then, there's further corrections in red ink on these papers.

I have a question, something that's been bugging me. Most of the short stories in Skeleton Crew were published in magazines and anthologies elsewhere first, why would there be a need to make corrections for these stories anyway? You know what I mean? Shouldn't they already be in pretty much publish-able shape?

Interesting about the Scream/Press company. You're so damn knowledgable, lol

Mr. Rabbit Trick

Almost all of the stories in the "collected works", like Skeleton Crew, differ from the originals. Sometimes by quite a lot.

DanishCollector
03-31-2011, 08:59 AM
King has a tendency to revise most stories when he collects them in a collection. Just After Sunset is the one where the revisions were extremely minor, probably since the stories are newer and not dated, for example. But even the old one in that collection, The Cat from Hell, had minor revisions - very minor. But I'm happy he didn't update it by throwing in cell phones or references to the internet.

OK so that's annoying. I rotated it into correct position but this picture is simply refusing to behave.

Steve Vernon is signed. That tpb was a freebie from Dark Regions. Each first time customer gets a free book of their choice. I chose Vernon because he's from Halifax. I'll search out more of his works because of this collection.

Other top 3 books are all signed by Lebbon. The Reach of Children is the hardest one to find. The publisher folded, around 300 books got lost and the author himself sold the rest.

Lord of the Mountain is my first lettered book ever.

Song of Kali came from jhanic and Carrie from a local buy/sell website for 10 bucks.

I had some birthday money left over (no, I'm not twelve years old), so I bought "The Waste Lands" signned/numbered portfolio and a Wizard and Glass dust jacket from Grant. I also wanted to replace a Waste Lands DJ, so I asked if they had any. They did, but they were untrimmed; so I got two: one for my jacketless book, and one because I think it's just really cool:

Wow, those remarques are so nice, guys. I have to ask, I see a lot of people scooping them up, and I see a few other collectors getting their comics and/or books inscribed/signed/doodled. Are you guys friends with the artists, is there a special way to get a book remarqued or do you just suck it up and spend $1,000+ per book with a remarque in it? Just curious.

On a related note, although I'm sure you guys are on it ... There is some original Chadbourne art from Secretary Of Dreams on Ebay. Nice stuff. Seems a little pricy for me, but then again, I'm new at this, lol.

Cemetery Dance started selling remaqued copies from their site. I don't remember the prices but they were reasonable. Full Dark No Stars and the Secretary of Dreams books were the ones that were offered recently. So it was direct from the publisher.

They're not really my pride and joy, but I got near-pristine versions of the hardcover first trades of the last three Dark Tower books today at work for supercheap...$5 apiece+50cents for mylars to keep them beautiful. I looked at my old copies--the ones I bought as soon as they were released--and I didn't realize just how banged up they'd gotten from the whole family reading them and my propensity to foist them on my friends. Now I have both reading copies and keepers of V-VII. I love my job and my employee discount. Just thought I'd share my latest bargain. Now I find myself wanting the Grant firsts of II-IV. A first Gunslinger is way outta my price range!

This is the first of the two 'milestones' I mentioned earlier that I wanted to share. Not a one-of-a-kind item but reasonably scarce - one of those interesting pre-CARRIE publications that not many people own: MOTH.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_fcdqdPh-_A8/TZclVaxzExI/AAAAAAAAAwo/U-l8lvgBi10/s512/Moth.JPG

I think I got a reasonable deal - not comparable to Bob's $200 for a pristine copy but definitely less expensive than most copies that are 'out there' right now. The other milestone is a true milestone but that one will take some time to find its way to me so... no pics yet.

I received the 2nd package today again something in the works for months (but definately worth the wait). I had been meaning to contact Vincent Chong for almost a year about doing a remarque in a book or two but finally contacted him after I saw a posting of the art He did for some Polish Stephen King books. I was asking about the remarques but also about the rough sketches He did for the Stephen King covers, after some back and forth there were some He still had and I purchased them as well as some for Joe Hills books and the remarques in Gunpowder, Heart Shaped Box and Stephen King Goes to the Movies. I will post most of the rough drawings tonight and get to the remarques hopefully tomorrow.

1st from Joe Hills Locke & Key, next 4 from Joe Hills Horns.

It's the July 13-19, 1968 issue and it contains a short letter by King that has the following entry in Justin Brooks' Bibliography:

C9. The Fight About Violence

The letter itself is not titled - it's one of several 'letters to the editor' by TV Guide readers, all dealing with the same topic.

Nice, I really love the Shawshank one. :) I found some remarqed SK Goes To The Movies ... and they are for a very reasonable price, but the pictures themselves are the opposite of what you got in your book. Whereas yours takes up the whole page and is detailed, the ones I'm seeing are very small and simple. So, I passed on them. But I AM getting my first remarques soon. Waiting for my PayPal registration to go through and then I can officially pay for my books, they're being held now. Very excited. :)

When I picked up Low Men months back, I talked w/Steve Sargent about the Shawshank remarque. It's always been one of my favorite stories (and easily my favorite movie), but I didn't like the remarque that Chong did for the book. Yes it wa strue to the movie poster, but I thought it was very simplistic and more importantly wasn't true to the storyline, because of course Andy just strolling out the open front gates in the warden's suit didn't happen.

Now you could say that it's symbolic, but for me it just didn't click. I told Steve then that I thought there were so many other moments from the story that would have made a much better subject for the drawing. As it turns out, Oy, this preliminary sketch is exactly one of them! I don't understand at all why Chong changed his mind and went with the other one, because this is great. Congrats on a some great acquisitions, but this one is definitely the best. Color me envious and upset with myself for it never even occuring to me to contact Chong regarding prelim sketches!

Edit: I did just write him now after hearing from Oy, asked if by chance he still had the Low Men prelim and how he'd feel about remarquing a Shawshank for me. Fingers crossed!

You guys have some truly fabulous art work.......they arejust amazing.

IT has (and will probably continue to be) one of my favorite King books. Since there's no S/L or special edition I had to spring for one.....

I don't mind at all that it is inscribed to Tom - I'm just glad that I could afford a signed copy!

Since it is one of my favorites, I wanted to make a good case for it.

The medallion on the spine is made from 1/8" pine, painted & glued on.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/706/medium/IT_comp_f_l_5_doc.JPG

I normally line cases with felt but this one got a velvet liner on the inside with felt on the inside of the lid.....

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/706/medium/IT_case_comp_inside_empty_doc.JPG

The gray is supposed to be a sewer grate similar to what is on the cover of the book......... (I wish I didn't have to tell you that but I'm not too sure how apparent it is)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/706/medium/IT_comp_front_3_doc.JPG

Nice, I really love the Shawshank one. :) I found some remarqed SK Goes To The Movies ... and they are for a very reasonable price, but the pictures themselves are the opposite of what you got in your book. Whereas yours takes up the whole page and is detailed, the ones I'm seeing are very small and simple. So, I passed on them. But I AM getting my first remarques soon. Waiting for my PayPal registration to go through and then I can officially pay for my books, they're being held now. Very excited. :)

Vincent has 2 sizes for remarques small and large so most likely you have seen the smaller remarques (mine were all large remarques). He was a pleasure to deal with, I just asked for whatever came to him on the HSB and Gunpowder remarques but asked for a Shawshank remarque for the SK Goes to the Movies book.

Make sure the book has an authentic signature if you find one Bill. I agree it is a sweet case Dolso made for the IT. I've been holding my tongue because I hate to be the bearer of bad news... but the signature looks like a fake to me. Wish someone else would have said something before me.

Dick, that is one F***ing AMAZING case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just get better and better with each one you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:clap::clap::clap:

This may be the first time a case inspired a purchase...........................Now I gotta go out and find a signed "It" so I can buy the case!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you spoke up, Dave. I have been debating whether or not to say anything. I even asked one of the moderators what would be proper protocol in this instance. I agree that the signature and inscription are forgeries.

I am by no means an expert on King signatures, so it looks legit to me. If it's a fake, it's a confident one. Perhaps a comparison to other late 80s/early 90s sigs would shed some light? I'd be interested to see what other, more experienced members think...

EDIT: more experienced than I am with sigs, I mean, not a knock on the two previous comments!

So Mods, what is the protocol? That's at least three members who thought it was a fake, but did not want to speak out about it.

pssst - Bill - I've got a great case with a fake signed book I'll sell you -- just don't show anybody......

Well, SUMBTCH-- doesn't that just suck......I've asked a few people what they thought about the signature & so far you guys are the first to say 'no good'. The only way to learn is by hard knocks, I guess.......what are you guys looking at that sez fake?

ok - posting while posting - Mr. RT - what is it about the inscription? Before buying it I questioned how straight & nice the sig slanted up - almost like there was a line drawn under it to write on (or a machine wrote it) - that isn't a problem?............if I'm going to buy books, I need to learn good from bad.

I am a long ways off from SK signatur analysis but the g does look quite off to me based on teh sigs I have seen.

Not sure I understand the comment about the inscription giving it away. Any explanation there????

I was aksed about this last week. My response was "Let him enjoy it now. A very polite PM down the road would be needed."
As soon as I saw the gorgeous case, my heart fell. I was hoping one of the members would tell him. I tried to actually contact another member for Dolso's phone number and was intent upon calling him, but didn't get to the person i was seeking before this happened.

The signature made me say hmmmmmmmmm....but I would not say 100% that it is a fake personally.

By itself, the signature is not bad....but the inscription does not look good (how is that for ambiguous?).

If it is a fake, it is a good fake.

On a related topic....why would we need a protocol on this?

We're all friends here, if you think it is a fake, you should either send him a PM or post in the forum.

I didn't think it was a particularly convincing forgery. Pretty easy call, IMO.

Having a "protocol" is probably the wrong phrase. I was just asking Jerome what he thought would be the best approach in this forum to let someone know that they had a forgery in their possession. If it were someone I had "known" for a long time and shared PM communications in the past I would just tell them via PM. But if it were someone I didn't really know then it isn't such an easy call. At least I was struggling with what was the right thing to do. I'm glad it is out in the open.

Ok... I've been around quite a while now (and still learning)... and I'm wondering why you guys are so sure Dolso's IT's Signatute is fake?

I look at his:
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/706/medium/It_Sig_1_doc.JPG

and I compare it to a first edition shining I bought many years ago:
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj13/sir_boomme/My%20Book%20Collection/sk2%20-%20US%201st%20Eds/A2b-Shiningsignaturepage.jpg

and I see more similarities than not.

I pretty much quit buying signed editions other than the official limiteds years ago.
Even though all my signed editions including the one above were bought from three very legit and knowledgable sources - Stu at Betts, our own Hutch, and Roy at Badmoon.

Although I'm almost for certain all my copies are Legit... there are so many fakes out there nowdays, I decided that it would not be the greatest investment - since later if I sold any, I'm then in the position of proving that my copies are valid ones amongst the multitude of fakes out there.... I just decided it wasn't worth it.

Anyway... if you guys are so sure that Dolso's is a fake... I'd be curious to hear what you guys think of this shining inscription. (which I'm pretty sure came from one of the three sources I mentioned above).

BTW, about 11 years ago, I paid $605.00 for this copy which was signed on halloween....

Your Shining inscription fully matches all the genuine one I've seen from that date.

Just compare the first 2 words and you can see why the "IT" inscription is so wrong.

Sir Boome:

Thanks for posting the comparison.

On closer scrutiny I can see (thx to the comparison) where the "K" and the "G" don't look right. It actually, IMHO appears to be a "freehand" forgery and not bad on first glimpse. What a low down dirty shame to forge upon such a good person.

Please ID the seller, I've got lime and a shovel. Anyone know a good spot in the desert?

ID'ing signatures is definitely not one of my strong points, so I really enjoyed this discussion (though I am infinitely sorry for Dick; still an awesome case though!). After reading where Mr RT says "Just compare the first 2 words and you can see why the "IT" inscription is so wrong." and then looking at Dolso and Sir_Boomme's photos, I had to grab my Cujo proof for comparison to see what he was talking about. (and to stop my heart from fluttering):

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/Cujo_Inscription.jpg

Compare with Mr RT & Dolso photos, and sure enough, if you look at how the r drops off the o in For, how his 8's are slanted and partially closed at the bottom, and how overall King's handwriting looks pretty messy (actually looks a lot like mine, now that really take a look) those I think would be giveaways. Now I do think Dolso's signature looks pretty good on first glance, but then if you start looking closer it's just not loopy enough (does that make sense?) and the letters are too close together, too slanted, and just too neat. Of course, I really don't know what the hell I'm talking about, just trying to make sense of the comparisons so that I know what to look for as well!

About Dolso's copy, I'm no expert at all, but the signature looks too good to be a forgery...

I understand the comments about the inscription, but the signature...
