First eds of french books by B.Werber (which invited me to meet him within the next few days to get the proof of his upcoming book), and the UK proof of FD,NS

I always thought that one of the story was called "hair extension" for some reason. it's "fair extension"

Very nice indeed, Jeremy.

I was looking for a reading copy of Salem's Lot a few months back. I saw an auction for a fine condition book with no dust jacket. Price was 3 EUR including shipping.

When I got the package in the mail, it was surprisingly large. I was thinking the seller is little crazy to use so much wrapping material for the book.

When I oped the package I was like  , since inside was the Centipede Press edition of the book. :)

That's a great surprise kkemikk.

I've had plenty of awesome deals on King books over the years. Too many to mention.

Today I received the Collector's Edition of Under the Dome with a Cemetery Dance slipcase purchased off ebay for £30 ($46).

If I had bought them seperately from the US, the shipping costs alone to the UK would have been more than that.

Here are my 2 newest additions. Salem's Lot 1st edition book with a 3rd state dust jacket. Not to easy to find ! Has the un-clipped $7.95 price and Father Callahan correction on the flap. 2nd is one of the signature sheets from the S/L The Stand. Betts sold these just a short time ago and the buyer was kind enough to sell me one of the 3 he had.

Haul of the day :

Movie press kits of :
Children of the corn, The Night Flier, Golden Years, Pet Sematary, Firestarter.Haven (thanks Pam for helping out with delivery outside of the USA!)

Today i met once again Bernard Werber (one of the most popular french author), which did invite me to come at his place to get the proof for his next book (publication date : 1st of october)

So we talked a wee bit about new technologies bla bla bla. Then he asked me how many proofs of his books i already have, and handed me the new one.
He also gave me the one from his previous book. I thought i had it, but took it anyway (i am collecting his books, so...), and i was happily surprised, when, at home i realised that i only had the finished book!
So today i got 2 of his proofs, from the man himself!

Too bad i forgot to ask him to sign any of those.... >< I guess that i'll go ask him to sign em at the book signing of the publication date

Ari and herbertwest got theirs by being reviewers. I and other collectors here have some contacts both in the US and the UK that are willing to sell their copies to us. We do occasionally obtain copies from the secondary sources, such as eBay and ABE. It often takes a lot of work to get these.

THE FOG - a painting by Tim White

This is the original painting by artist Tim White which was to be used as the cover artwork for the paperback version of the book ‘The Fog’
by James Herbert. It was commissioned by the publishers, New English Library (UK), in 1981. They wanted a simple design for the cover
which would have been dominated by large type for the book, thus the available (lower) area for a picture was small. The painting was
completed and the publishers were happy with it. However, Herbert decided at the last moment that he wanted a typography only cover
for the paperback using a typeface which he designed himself. Tim then produced another artwork for the paperback cover featuring only
type which was used instead of this original painting.

The top half is unadorned to allow for the insertion of what would have been the title and Herbert's name.

The painting measures 151/4 inches x 91/4 inches.

Medium: 'Gouache' (opaque watercolour) on art board.

I'm a big Herbert fan and recently took the opportunity Tim gave me to buy this unique piece of art.

I got a copy of that Limited Edition from Centipede...nice book.

Although I'd like to expand my collection of his books it's extremely difficult to find very early signed copies. He is also not easy to contact, unlike many other authors who are much more approachable. He was at the World Horror Convention in Brighton (England) in March of this year but as always my location restricts my chances to meet the 'big guns'.

I do have a F/F signed copy of The Survivor however and unusually it is signed 'Jim' rather than his normal signature 'James'.

Small report about:
Book German Premiere Justin Cronin The Passage - Der Übergang

Also ich war gestern Abend bei der Deutschlandpremiere von Justin Cronins Der Übergang - The Passage.
Lokation:
Hamburg St. Pauli Reeperbahn Imperial Theater - Total Geile Lokation. Einlass 17.30
Also, Mr. Cronin kommt sehr früh, kurz nach halb sechs.
Nice to see you again....

Translation:
Yesterday 13.09.10 was the Justin Cronin German Book premiere of his Der Übergang - The Passage

Lokation: Hamburg St.Pauli Reeperbahn Imperial Theather (Think everyone knows that St.Pauli and especially the Reeperbahn is the ´best known Red-light´ district in the world.)
The event starts at six a clock, i arrive earlier, because i want to look where is the backentrance door, because i think Mr. Cronin enters the Theater there. I was surprised, the small Theater have no backentrance door. On the backside of the Theater was a Porno-Cinema and a Strip Club.
Ok, half past 6 the big Limo. arrives, Mr. Cronin comes, and 4 profi signatur hunter are coming to him, and he signs some PICTURES. Then Mr. Conins way to the Theater brings him... what a surprise direkt to me ;-)
I give him my Der Übergang-The Passage German Hartcover Slipcased ARC Leseexemplar,
he signed it, and say that he was surprised, that there were people who want signatures
and MY BOOK was the FIRST that he signed in GERMANY .... :-)
The waiting 50 persons, are going down, because this Theater room was in the basement.
Realy small theatre hall, i sit 5 m away from the stage.
On the stage.: Mr Cronin Mrs. Schwarzkopf moderator/translator, Mr. von Stetten german actor, reads several parts in German.
Then the presentation of the book starts, takes arround 1,5 hours. Cronin talks a lot about
the help from his daughter, and reads a part. He says that he knows the titles from
part 2: and part3 of the trilogie. Part 2. THE 12.. published 2012
and part 3.... sorry.. forget the full name.... something with STARS published 2014.
When Mr. Cronin talks, he get attackt by a moskito, he says he thinks the moskito is so agressive, because he have the VIRUS...
Then everybody after 1,5 hrs. thinks this event is finished, and the signing starts, someone from the german publishing company comes, and says.... Because this is the
German Premiere of DER ÜBERGANG, they decided to make the premierenparty right here and the audience is invited, outside a catering company who serves drinks and food.
All of the audience are going out, to by outside a Book for the signing...
But i have my books for signing. I was the first in the line. The signing place was the Theater pay kiosk, and when i come, Mr C. says... Nice to see you again, he signs some books an a poster ( the only not book thing he signs) I say something like, i realy enjoy
this event, and when he signs he means, that the German hartcover book looks better and
was better bonded then the US and UK...
OK, i have my signs... Now i drink and eat something, and Mr. C. signs the books for the other 50 persons.... He talks to everyone, very nice, the distance between him and the
´us´ was ZERO... Everybody was very surprised about this evening. Then he finished his sig. work, comes out, most of the audience was gone, he drinks and eats a little bit, and still talks with the ´rest of us´.
He says
that the US books the publisher give him to sign, are not the ´normal´ us hartcoverbooks,
he means this are RE-Export airport books...
Then, after 3 hours, Mr. Cronin puts away a bottle of bear, says goodbye to the ´rest of us 2-3 people´ and together with 2-3 persons from the publisher, management he starts a ´small´ Reeperbahn Redlight-district tour. He goes into the night, on the other side of the street... Some hookers, and druck addicts. Party people...... The normal St.Pauli early night. Next day Mr. Cronin must fly/drive to Zurich...

A realy nice evening with MR Cronin. Mrs. Schwarzkopf the hostess/translator says.:
Think the next time, Mr. Cronin comes to Hamburg, this little tiny theater is to small...

This was the cheapest S/L on my wishlist.

I guess that next up will either be the UK Regulators/Desperation, or the Cycle of the Werewolf Portfolio. :orely:

Yes, when it was my turn to become one ore more signatures, (i was one of the last 150 visitors), i asked Mrs. Oelker if its ok to become MORE than
1-2 signatures. When she starts to sign my books, she was surprised that i have all first editions, and she signed... and signed and signed....
Then when i have all 10 signatures, i thanked her, but i told her, at the next book signing event Nov. Hamburg Crime Festival, i come with the REST of her books, for more signatures:dance:. Mrs. Oelker also writes ´modern time´crime books, and other stuff.....

My girlfriend and I recently rescued another cat.

This one is an approximately 10 month old boy, who had a rough life before being found on a reserve.

He is missing his front right leg and his tail, but he is still one of the friendliest cats I have ever encountered.

We named him Albert, but have been affectionately calling him Stumps.

This is a recent acquisition but not really a "pride and joy." I recently bought on eBay a copy of PET SEMATARY signed on 11/8/83 which I think is a few days before the official publication date. I don't recall seeing copies of this book with signatures close to the publication date so I bought it and was glad to get it.

The book (from a seller in New Zealand) was waiting for me when I returned home from a week away. I opened it, determined that the signature was legit, decided I was very happy with it, left feedback for the seller and put it aside.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/tippedsignaturepetsematary1.jpg

Today I was cataloging the book into my collection. I always list on what page the book is signed, i.e. title page, half title, front free endpaper, etc. I opened the book again and found that the signed page is blank and located between the copyright page and the dedication page. I thought "WTF?"

I got other copies of the book and found that there is no such page in other first edition copies. Very suspicious now I noticed that the signed page is of slightly heavier stock than the others. I am 99% sure that the page is tipped in by an unscrupulous person but, damn, it is a VERY nice job.

Here is a photo of the rear of the page next to the dedication page.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/tippedsignaturepetsematary2.jpg

I contacted the seller who is very willing to take the book back and issue a refund. He's a really nice guy who has collected King for a long time and says he bought the book from Stu at Betts and never once thought to question the legitimacy.

I suppose it is possible that Doubleday tipped some in sort of like has been done recently with UNDER THE DOME but I have never heard of such books done for this title and I have been around for a pretty long time.

Bottom line is that I am returning the book but would appreciate any thoughts or information regarding someone coming across a similar book. Whoever did this did a REALLY nice job but, at the end of the day, I just don't think the book is worth a whole heck of a lot.

If you don't mind me asking Bob, how much did you pay for it? Just curious to see if the signature would be worth keeping the book for.

$375. I was willing to pay that much because you just don't see copies of that book with signatures near the time of publication. I thought it was a pretty special copy. It was a "Buy It Now" or "Submit Best Offer" type of auction. We negotiated a bit and settled on $375. With the book being altered it wouldn't be worth more than $100 to me and even then I don't think I would want it in my collection.

Ricky
10-01-2010, 05:23 PM
I would feel the same way in regard to the alteration. If it didn't have the "extra" page, I'd say keep it. Not so much now. I guess it all comes down to monetary value vs. personal value.

Regardless of the outcome, thanks for sharing the story. I found it quite interesting.

Fsmdr
10-01-2010, 07:43 PM
Definitely the first for me to hear of such alteration. If it was done legitimately, it would have been announced as such. If the seller, indeed purchase it from Betts, then it must have missed Stu's notice as well. I almost want to say, is the seller sure that he did not purchase this book from Flatsigned.com?.

I don't have a similar book, but perhaps a similar story.
~ 1989, a seller (Mark ******** from ****** ****** Books) who I aquired quite a few books from in my early days of collecting sold me a "First Edition 1st Printing" of The Shining. I was new to the collecting thing and didn't fret that it had a price clipped dj. Years later-thanks to the internet I checked the gutter code, and it wasn't R49. The CR page correctly stated FIRST EDITION. I was puzzled
I ended up shipping the book to a King expert (it might have been Hutch, but memory doesn't serve me well in that regard) and he examined the book and determined that someone had carefully and expertly removed the original non-first edition CR page and glued in a true FIRST EDITION CR page. He shipped the book back to me and with a magnifying glass I was able to see the forgery and the faint residue (this guy was a good forger!) of a library stamp. How he "washed" the stamp out I do not know.
I ended up giving the book away during the darktower.net days-after clearing warning the recipient that it was a forgery.
I believe the seller (Mark) was the one who did this. He still is around, but I haven't purchased a book from him in over 15 years.

The mods will probably slaughter me for this but what the heck. If I post this elsewhere nobody will see it so here goes.

This is the Odyssey Arena (the home of my team, the Belfast Giants) on Saturday night when the Boston Bruins came to town
(on their way to a season opening double match-up in Prague with Phoenix)...the first NHL side to ever visit Ireland.

Ok, so we took 2 quick penalties in succession shortly after, the Bruins scored 3 goals in a minute...and eventually
ran out 5-1 winners, but what a truly amazing night.

P.S.
This is what you missed Jean

Awesome, nice to see that hockey has a market in Ireland! And awesome that what would amount to probably an ECHL team over here managed a lead against the Bruins!

I managed to see three games this preseason - the Maple Leafs had their rookie tournament here in London so I saw two of those games and then a preseason tilt between them and the Flyers (which the won in a 14 round shootout!)

agrabin
10-04-2010, 07:55 AM
The Giants have only been around since 2000 and play in the EIHL...the top UK ice-hockey league. We are the current Play-Off champions and also lead the League as of Sunday night. The standard is probably around ECHL and the team we put out against the Bruins was a select team of the best players in the League. I tell you what, we gave them a fright and the 5-1 scoreline flattered the Bruins somewhat. Anyway, we had a great night and hopefully more top flight teams will consider coming to Belfast.

By the way, 5 (or was it 6?) years ago a sobered up Theo Fleury played for the Giants and he was a sensation. I met him and his wife to be and he really is a terrific guy.

I just received two more proofs today.

The first is another Secretary of Dreams Vol. 2 proof, but without the numbers on the side.

The second is the proof of Shock Rock, with the first publication of King's "You Know They Got a Hell of a Band"

I'll post the picture of the Shock Rock proof in my Collections thread after the move. It presents a bit of a problem, though, because it's larger than my scanner. I'll be experimenting with ways of doing it.

John,

If you have a good photo editing program like Photoshop Elements, you can do a photo merge of multiple pics into one. You just need to take pics with overlap, so the software has the same section in each pic to compare so it knows where to stitch them together. If you don't have software, I can stitch them together for you.

Just contact one of your fellow Dutch forum members (such as yours truly) ;)

I just checked and you could theoretically also order a copy at the largest Dutch online book/DVD store (www.bol.com). They do have a listing of shipping time/charge for international orders (priority mail to the US takes about two weeks and shipping is €17.35) but they don't seem to have an English version of the website and registering will therefore probably be a hassle.

If I were to send the book to you shipping would be slightly higher (around €24), plus a couple of bucks for packing. Combined with the price of the book you're looking at about €50-55 ($70 or more) for a large trade paperback.

Joe Hill Teufelszeug - Horns German Bookpremiere in Berlin 05.10.10
It was the one and only public event in Germany, on the 06.10.10 Joe Hill was at the Frankfurt Book trade show, but this day was an ´only press and bookdealers´ day.

Joe Hill in the Otherland Bookshop. With ´Horns´. My seat was 2m to his table. Arround 50 people are in the bookshop.

The complete event was arround two hrs. After the reading and q+a, Joe Hill signs all
books. By choice i was the last who becomes signatures, because i have the most books.
Joe Hill signed one of my 3 Promo Poster, each differend. On his right side, the small booktower, parts of my books.

who is also the translator of the book, if he maybe have something ´special´.
He give me 3 Promo Poster, right of the shopwindow, and Joe Hill signes me all 3 differend.

In 1994 a small press run of a literary journal called SALT HILL was published at Syracuse University. It contained a poem titled "Dino" by Stephen King. Somehow the King collecting community didn't know about this until around 2004 or 2005 when a copy signed by King showed up on eBay. I can't remember what it sold for but I do know that I have been looking for a copy ever since. They seem to be unbelievably scarce.

Rocky Wood once put me in touch with a professor at Syracuse who had a copy and would consider selling. I offered him $400 for it and he turned me down.

I lucked out last Saturday when a copy showed up on ABE for the princely sum of $20. When I saw the listing my hands couldn't move my computer mouse fast enough to place the order. I consider myself very fortunate to have been on my computer when the listing showed up.

I've been going around the house trumpeting like a bull elephant ever since the mail came today and it had arrived safely. I put this right up there with the Maine Magazine (March/April 1977) with the first appearance of "One For The Road" and Marshroots with "It Grows On You" as the most difficult King appearances to find. At least it was for me.

Here are some pics. I had no idea what it would look like. It is a small journal (8" x 5.5") with glossy wrappers. About the same size as Moth, Onan, Marshroots, etc.

Today has been a very good day.

I belong to the Book of the Month Club (mainly because they are the source of these, and other items) so I get it from them. totally off topic, but would you mind telling me more about the paint job in your basement? I can't figure out if it's "3D" or the strokes with a different shade are meant to seem that way. My living room is overdue for new paint and I'm really liking yours. if it's a secret, that's fine but if you could share how you did it, I'd greatly appreciate it. You can PM me so things don't get too off topic. Thanks either way.

I'm glad you like it. The walls are textured with standard wall plaster but put on rather thickly and done so that the trowel marks are frequent and deliberately left. Then a stain/glaze was applied but pretty quickly wiped off before it completely dried leaving the darker color in the recessed areas.

That CN number is meaningless. It is only the Catalogue Number (CN) and appears on every copy whatever the printing.

The BCA "1st Printings" have no other printing details noted. i.e.

The 2nd printing says "2nd impression"
The 3rd printing says "3rd impression"
The 42 printing says " 42 impression"

Get the idea? All have the number CN6975. It's like an ISBN number.

I don't collect proofs AS other members do, but there are some I'm looking for. At this moment, the one I'm after is IT.

I have one on sale on ebay.

I agree the framing job is great!

btw, what is the size of the print of Letters From Hell? I was just wondering if it was close to a notebook sized piece of paper or was it real large?

That looks really nice - Lord John Press has PC copies for $250 - is that too much? Wonder how many PC copies they made ...

The note above indicates 500 S/L and 26 Lettered.
I just spoke with Mr. Yellin, he can be a bit brusque. He said there were/are 100 PC's all signed by King and designated as PC's.
