With the help of another King collector friend I finally got the other copy I was looking at. According to the publishing info here, Danse Macabre came out in April, 81 so this pre-publication inscription is also very early. Other than a tiny tear at the top of the spine and a little rubbing to a couple corners it's one of the nicer DJs I've seen too. Danse Macabre, along with Pet Semetary seem to be very difficult DJs to find without any flaws.

That is another nice one, Greg, with a VERY early dated inscription. My notes (definitely unofficial) have April 20,1981 as the official publication date.

I've got a proof inscribed to David Hartwell dated 2/26/81 and a first trade edition inscribed to Peter Schneider dated 4/14/81.

I really love to search for the earliest dates I can find and I can see that you do too. Congratulations!

I think that book was a case of Constant Readers collectivelly jumping the gun (myself included). Here's a new, unknown author with a book backed by a ridicilous hype machine. How many of us would be truly interested in a book if it wasn't backed by SK and CD? They sold the entire printing in a day or. How many established authors on CD could do the same? I'm sure Stephen King could. Anyone else?

For the record, I haven't read the book yet but I'm sure I'll like it.

I'm sure you will like it. I liked it quite a bit, heartily recommended it to my wife and she also liked it. Some parts, I thought, were brilliant. But after a couple of weeks when I reflect back on the book do I think it was as good as the hype machine made it out to be? For me, no. And the ending wasn't to my liking either.

jhanic

I rated The Passage as a B or B+. I hate to judge the first third of a trilogy, however. Too much depends on the consequent volumes. I was also turned off by the amount of hype. I avoided getting any of the proofs, etc. I did get a discounted signed first, though.

As I said elsewhere, I just hope I'm still around when part three is published. I'm not getting any younger here. :P

I disagree vehemently and angrily! haha...

Seriously, though, I just finished the Passage today and had read the original 1978 Stand not too long ago.

The Stand -1978- is tight, concise, on point, with specific characters that are easy to follow while being equally compelling with motivations a reader can grasp and understand.

Passage - good entertainment, ambitious though derivative, takes a few new spins but reads a little like what it is - fiction from an MFA graduate who's been through one too many workshops. The characters jumble together and the narrative needed some aggressive editing. And Auntie and Lacey are two stereotyped black characters almost to the point of parody. There were PAGES that I skimmed over because I was bored and confused, and I never did that with the original Stand. Plenty of good parts, though, and Cronin does capture the whole epic scope pretty well.

I liked it, but IMO it was still pop entertainment and not much more. It's been a long time since I read Swan Song, which I remember as being very Stand-ish, and I might read it again to see how it measures up.

Now...The Stand - 1990? Overwritten and ego-driven. SK probably inspired George Lucas to re-edit Star Wars - and I don't mean that in a good way!

But, I'm glad to have a signed 1/1 edition of the Passage, and glad I at least know what all the fuss is about!

I love the "no bad dreams" personalization!

Congrats.
Thanks.
It was interesting. I was first in line for him to sign and I overhead him say to the bookstore person and his publisher handler 'no lines unless it's personalized'. I asked what he meant and he said that he would not inscribe any lines from the book unless the inscription was personalized. He went on to say that book buyers in the Uk had requested some exorbitant amount of books with a line from the book, and then flatsigned.
I don't see why he would care-every book sold makes him money, and the resell only helps future sales, but alas, he's the millionaire and I'm just a guy buying a book.

I thought THE PASSAGE was just OK. It was a great read but I can't see myself ever reading it again. I'm actually wondering if I'm going to keep all these proofs, ARCs, signed copies, etc.

Well I love this book
If you do decide to sell your proofs please let me know. I have a couple of ARCs and signed copies already.

Am leaning towards doing this...
Thanks to Jerome, he got my US and UK ARC copies of The Passage signed. And my UK buddy Tom got me a signed UK 1st.
So, I will have a package here of 1st editions US and UK signed AND US and UK Arcs signed. I think that's a cool package...it may be for sale.

Exactly!! The ones pictured in Bob Jackson's post back in August 2008 have printing on the covers. Mine don't. I'd say it's a different state. According to Barry R. Levin's Biblio Notes there were only about 12 copies each of Desperation and The Regulators manuscript proofs done. He makes no mention of different states of Desperation.

God, can you imagine the effect a "Carlosdetweiller Super Collection" sale would have on the SK collecting world? :scared::scared:

Probably about the same as Chris Cavalier's did. Chris's collection was magnificent and, in many ways I think, superior to mine. Everyone who collects for a long time has basically the same books, proofs, limited editions, etc. Chris's collection was much stronger on original manuscript material while I have a lot more original artwork and signed early correspondence. I was/am in total awe of the collection Chris put together.

This is one of the things I picked up while I was away - I thought you might like to see it. It's an advance proof for PET SEMATARY (one of the later type set ones). True, it's seen better days, but it's fun for a couple of reasons:
1. I bought it in Bangor
2. It is signed 'Steve' rather than 'Stephen'
3. It's inscribed to Burt Hatlen (Stephen's English professor and mentor)
4. It is dated September '83 which is months before the final publication (Nov I think?)
5. And finally, ever the Professor, it is sprinkled through out with notes and corrections from Mr. Hatlen...

Just catching up on pages of posts in this thread. It always makes me happy to see how my friends are expanding their collections!

Over the past weekend while out of town, I picked up a little book signed by King some time ago. From what I could tell, the store had only had it in their inventory for about ten days, so maybe I got lucky. Then again, maybe not. Honestly I hadn't heard of the book before buying it.

I really need to get a camera so I can post photos. (No camera, not even on my cellphone, until I make it to the store.)

I bought this on sort of an impulse on eBay the other day because I didn't have one. Then I got to thinking that I don't think I have ever seen a "PC" copy of this title before.

The seller turned out to be Earl Geier who drew the artwork used for the endpapers and drew the cute little ghost on the signing/limitation page. I guess with 64 people signing (assuming they each got a "PC" copy) that's where they all went.

Anyway, I'm pleased to put this one on the shelf.

Back in 1998, I was lucky enough to find a copy of Six Stories for $250. Even then the book was selling for around $500. I had to sell it about 18 months after that and actually received an offer of $800 the day after I sold it for $500. Such is life though.

My most recent awesome deal was a non-King related item. I was able to get a Dark Horse comics Shiro (a comic character) statue that originally sold for around $175 for the princely sum of $37.00 total. That means with shipping and everything people. You can still find the statue on ebay and sellers want aroun $150 for it. The statue is in mint condition with zero defects.

Not King related, but certainly something I've been chasing for nearly 4 years.

A long time ago, somebody was offering a Six Stories on some Usenet site...they said that it was beat up, and they would just take a high bid...I figured I'd take a chance at $110 on the chance that nobody would bid higher than $100.

I was right...then I had to trust her to send it...then had to hope it actually wasn't completely ruined.

It was beat-up, but not horribly...had a few tears on the cover, and one dime-sized chunk torn out...but def. readable and neat to have.

Best part...a few years later I sold it for $400, damage and all...

Back when the s/l Cujo came out, I'd been dealing a lot with a book dealer by mail. On a business trip to his home town, I went down to see him. He had a few s/l Cujo editions for sale, but he said they weren't moving. He offered me one for $60 (list price was $75) so I grabbed one. I wish now that I'd bought all he had. Who knew?

Way back in 1982 I had just started collecting Stephen King books. I think I had picked up used first editions of FIRESTARTER, THE DEAD ZONE and CUJO. I had never bought a new King first edition before.

I was in a store called Golden Age Collectibles in Pike Place Market in Seattle. I had mentioned to one of the guys behind the counter that I liked Stephen King. He said "Wait right here" and went into the back of the store. He returned with a shrinkwrapped copy of THE GUNSLINGER and said it was the last one he had. I had never heard of it before and was sort of surprised at the price. $20 was really an expensive book in 1982. At least I thought it was. I bought it and when I got to the car I began having second thoughts. I was in the Army at the time and our daughter had just been born. Money was somewhat tight and I didn't think I should be spending that much on one book. I almost took it back into the store to ask to return it. For whatever reason I didn't and I still consider it to be my best deal.

I forgot about that one. When The Dark Tower had just been released, and I was downtown Vancouver (B.C.), the Comic Shop, and there it was...a small stack of the trade editions, about 3 or 4 copies. Twent dollars wàs a lot of money those days...I hemmed and hawed a bit...hemmed and hawed some more, but finally bought a copy....only one....should have bought them all....:arg:

Here is my latest acquisition. A complete collection of Castle Rock. They show some signs of age with yellowing and some have mailing labels but overall they are in very good condition.

I do have a question for the other collectors out there. What is the best way to store these to help preserve them. First off should they opened up and store unfolded as they currently are. Should they kept in a bag, box? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Congratulations. I recommend that you look through them and read many of the articles that appeal to you. There was really some interesting stuff in there. I was always excited when a new issue appeared in my mail box. Don't just file them away and not enjoy them.

I have mine bagged and boarded like a comic book but with the "magazine" sized bags and boards. I've kept mine folded. I'm not sure if that is the best way for archival storage but that is what I do.

Great set, Skippy - congratulations indeed!
I used to have a subscription and was lucky to get a complete set. I have them stored in a box, folded, away from the light.
If I remember correctly, I had a letter printed, wondering about an inconsistency in The Drawing of the Three. I have no idea any longer what this was about, but I'll look it up sometime and see what I thought King had gotten wrong...

Congrats Skippy.

You know this would be a great thing to have archived on a cd. Where one could look and read at these issues on your computer. That would be great. Rolling Stone and other magazine have done this. I bought the whole Rolling Stone archives on a cd and I can look at thousands of issues, there are even a few Stephen King bits in there.

btw John what is the page count of the ARC? It looks kinda thin (and congrats!).

jhanic
07-30-2010, 07:45 AM
The "main" part of the ARC consists of the Introduction, Screenplay (both by Mick Garris), the Art Gallery by Bernie Wrightson, Photos from the Set and the Director's Notebook, with a total of 176 pages. The flip side of the book (envision the old Ace double paperbacks) has King's story, at 43 pages. There's a blank page separating the two.

Mine has no identifier. I can only say that the person from whom I bought it was in the "book publishing business" back in the 1970's. He called the book I have an ARC. I don't know if there is an earlier or more traditional proof or not and neither did the seller.

Awhile back, Ari posted picture of a promotional item about "the lawnmower man" comic book, that was planned to be published at the same time as the movie came out.

Then King made a law suit, and the comic book wasnt published.
I am still looking for the same promotional item than Ari, however i've recieved today a comic book that have a short excerpt of it.

The thing is that this excerpt have been published in March 1992, and the preview mention a publication date 31st of March.
It must have been taken out of the print at the last time then! There must be at least 1 issue of this comic book that was created but never published!

(Interesting as well : on the back cover of the comic. An ad for "the lawnmower man", the movie.. with King's name!
"Stephen King's the lawnmower man" What a CON!

First, a full set of Castle Rock Newsletters (double-sided photocopies, $25 at Betts):

I believe Hutch has a genuine set with my name written on it (one day) but for now these will do nicely.

Next, the Viking EYES OF THE DRAGON proof, thanks to Kyle (Kacod) and David:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_fcdqdPh-_A8/TF0VB12UMCI/AAAAAAAAAfk/9Lgq8INdNnQ/s512/eyesUSproof.JPG

I love it! It's in great shape - the 'warping' on the right of the front cover is only in the protective cover. This proof came with a nice proof DJ (similar to the regular DJ but without text on the DJ flaps).

And then, the pièce de resistance. Remember, I told you guys a while ago that I would be getting 'the Mother of all ARCs'. Well, this is it, as far as I'm concerned. The CARRIE ARC (hence the little wordplay). This one is special to me because it represents a landmark in King's career and also because it was issued in my birth year 1974. Kudos to Kyle and David - this was a real bargain as far as I'm concerned (check the price at Betts!)...

Do you remember when Amazon and I think Lilja posted a picture of the UK edition of Full Dark, NO Stars the picture was upside down and now they have corrected it. But I thought it looked way cooler upside down gave more of an edge to it. The USA cover kinda sucks looks like something off of a romance novel or something.
One more thing I am wanting to get either the traycase or the slipcase but not sure which I really want. I guess I'll get one of each to see which I like the best. What do you think about any of this.
