I have been collecting for 20 years, own over 400 books, almost 2/3rds signed by King, and I cannot come close to any of your amazing stories!

The closest I can come I think was that I had purchased the S/L Wizard & Glass on eBay (#296) for about $300 (back before any inkling that DT V-VII were in the works) and was looking through ABE.com and saw that a bookseller in NY (Marianna Fontana) had listed seperately DT S/L I, II, and III all #296 for sale. I bought all 3 for about $3000, and thus I was on my way to putting together my first complete same-numbered DT S/L set. And while the price was low compared to what the books are worth today, I thought it was unbelievable luck that I could put together a same-number set "the hard way." That set is among my favorite collectibles in my collection and has been subsequently augmented by:

#296 UK Wizard & Glass S/L
#296 S/L Gunslinger audio tapes read by King
#296 of all 4 DT prints by Michael Whelan

I actually bought a DT I #71 for $1500 (a high price at the time, though not now)...then Mik at Grant Books had #71 of DT III and IV as well as Desperation for $1800...THEN I've since stumbled on Christine, Danse Macarbe, Night Visions, Dark Dreamers #71...and all the various editions I've been able to get at issue price, for a total of about 21 all with #71.

Other than the prices I mentioned, I have to say that I've been lucky to never have to pay significantly above market price for many of them...but, other than recent limiteds that I got at issue price, I haven't really gotten bargains either.

I am still missing DT 2 -DOTT #71, but I do have the $56 Author's Edition as a placeholder...

I even had two of three Plants with the same number, but I had to let them go...oh well...

(by the way, which cover do you guys like best? The US or the UK one?)

I like the UK one because with a cover like that I can fool my mam into reading it, i'll tell her it's about a bonny wee orphaned lass from Scotland, see how far she gets before she asks me what the hell i've given her to read.

Justin actually talked about the different covers. Someone asked him what he thought about the cover and he said the only thing he really wanted on the cover (US edition) was stars. And there are stars.

He said he "liked" the UK one but there was a version from another country (Sweden? Finland?) that he absolutely liked the most. Sorry I can't remember which one it was. Let me see if I can ask him on Twitter...

Interesting website. The place doesn't answer the phone after 6:15pm EDT (I thought New York never slept:ninja:).
No big deal, ordered one and noted that if not autographed, cancel the purchase.

Yes, that is what I did too. I'm pretty sure we will get signed copies.
Great collecting mind (s) (yours not mine), think alike.

I just got e-mail confirmation from The Strand that my order was processed and shipped. I was pretty explicit in my instructions that I only wanted a signed copy or nothing so I have my fingers crossed.

Attempts to actually call the store and reach a human being were unsuccessful.
I'm sure it will resolve positively, but this also seems like the hype that surrounded ' The Historian ...Historio Graphus'...the S/L in particular, and signed trade editions were frantically sought, but now are 'a dime a dozen'

These are very cool, oversized, hardcover books - with no dust jackets - those very awesome covers are printed on the hardcover! Here's a shot to show the difference in size between the American GN and the French Editions.

Sorry for the bad reflection on this one - the comic is encased in a plastic holder and it's not very conducive to photos.

Batman # 400 - Anniversary Issue - Introduction by Stephen King!! CGC 9.6 from 1986. It's incredibly hard to find one of these at a grade of 9.8 - this is the next highest, a 9.6

Well, as owner of Betts Books, I have done an admirable job of telling myself that these wonderful rare books I am selling are for the customers, not myself!! (You can't believe the temptation!!!!)

However, I finally went out and purchased a book for my own collection that I have wanted for a very long time. You might not think it's any great shakes, but this book is extremely hard to find. There are zero listings on ABE, alibris, etc.

It is the UK 1st edition of the original 1978 The Stand. A very knowledgable source has told me that there may have been less than 1000 printed which makes it more rare than a 1st edition Carrie or Salem's Lot.

I am quite thrilled to add this one to my collection. Now if it were only signed, sigh. I have a signed Fine/Fine 1978 Stand, signed US and UK revised and expanded The Stand 1990 and of course the S/L Stand. This one is in nice shape with a tight binding.

*edit* this is a pricey book if you want a goodlooking specimen! If you pay less you can expect something like these (my copies, both of which were a little over £100):

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_fcdqdPh-_A8/TBZb7KIBDtI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/vZAHRAj8TkY/s512/IMG_4956.JPG

This one has a great spine (most have lamination wrinkles) but has a lot of wear & some tears...

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_fcdqdPh-_A8/TBZb7XfD85I/AAAAAAAAAcU/F3da3aVLGHU/s512/IMG_4963.JPG

Someone else posted a book signed at a book signed and he signed on the title page. I hope that's where he signs the one I ordered from River Run for next week.

I have seen a few on Ebay recently with the sticker, stating a tipped in signature sheet. Not sure which was which but the signed copies on Ebay are signed on a blank page and some are on the title page.

Just received the second delivery from my Brian Keene lifetime subbie today , it was only supposd to contain a new anthology (Dark Faith) with a Keene story and the cover flat for his next leisure fiction release. Well I got those, plus he threw in some more goodies!.

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb93/cloysterpeteuk/P170610_1811_01-1.jpg

Gypsies Stole My Tequila S/L hardcover, Steve Gerlach - Amber Rising, a copy of Dead Reckonings No5 and a promo bookmark for Harlan County Horrors.

now why is this image tiny?, must have used the wrong photobucket link *sigh*

Then I dug to the bottom of the parcel and pulled out a traycased copy of Steve Gerlach's Hunting Zoe, this is the first traycased book I own lol. I've not read any of his books before so does anyone rate his work?.

Gerlach is good!

Cloysterpete

Technically anthologies weren't part of the subscription so I didn't expect even Dark Faith, but he got a good deal from the publisher. The subbie covers every mass market paperback, trade paperback, trade hardcover, cover flat, comic book or graphic novel he releases but doesn't cover things like his S/L editions (as in like a year or two the cost of those would be above the $500 price of the subscription) DVD's, audio-titles and non-US releases. I'm not so much into the S/L's (can't afford them anyway to be blunt) just so long as I can read the story in some form!.

Keene releases so many novels and comic books that it will work out well, especially here in the UK where I would have to import a lot of his stuff as he pays the shipping costs which soon adds up.

A lot of his old work (Unhappy Endings, Fear of Gravity, the two Selected Scenes books) is coming out in tpb so now I won't have to fork out for the expensive signed copies.

I have to thanks ChristineB for helping me with out paying for this, he doesn't take paypal so I had no easy way to pay. Btw last time he posted an update he still had one (of 15) left available.

Actually I don't know, it's just says Brian Keene on the limitation page so it a copy they sent to him. I assume it's the same design as the regular numbered edition but i'm not familiar with BLP.

I've been looking at some of the books of Gerlach's on his website seems most of his stuff is small press only, which is the main problem with all these obscure writers, their work may be excellent but i'm never going to take a chance on them unless they can manage to get some novels out in mass-market paperback.

Brice
06-18-2010, 02:34 AM
Some of Gerlach's books have been published in mass market by Leisure I think.

And I'm certain that's a lettered BLP...though probably an out of series one sent to Keene by the publisher.

e_taylor
06-18-2010, 05:04 AM
Yup, definitely a PC copy of the lettered, but instead of PC, Larry put in BRIAN KEENE.

I know Gerlach is re-releasing his back-catalog through a publisher in the UK in trade hc and tpb. Can't remember the name of the publisher now....

I'm not trying to start some argument but fact is, I haven't read all of Mr. King's books. I was a little ticked last night when I saw the post and yes, I'm fully aware it wasn't meant to be a spoiler. I just wasn't expecting it. I stay away from discussions on books that I haven't read because that's where I expect the spoilers to be but this I just didn't see coming. It might not take away from the book once I get to it but maybe a little warning next time?

I think the problem is though that everyone's idea of what constitutes a spoiler varies from person to person. What would be considered a minor plot development by some would be considered a spoiler by others. In my case I don't believe a good book can be spoiled, but that's just my personal opinion. Overall I'd say most people try to avoid posting them (or use the spoiler tags), but I think there will always be isolated cases of stuff like this slipping though.

Not really. I tend to forget the fact that not everyone has been around reading King for as long as I have. I've bought every new King book the day it went on sale since about 1981. It just amazes me that people haven't read THE TOMMYKNOCKERS yet since it is so old. But newcomers have to start somewhere and I tend to forget that.

I've only been hit by a spoiler once that I thought it really mattered. DT IV: WIZARD AND GLASS had just been published and I was about half way through. Someone on the usenet group alt.books.stephenking posted a thread title with a MAJOR spoiler that occurred near the end of the book. Something about what Rhea tricked Roland into doing. It was a major bummer.

Since then I have stayed away from the computer when reading a new King book if I was afraid of spoilers. I remember getting an arc of DT VII: THE DARK TOWER and basically sequestering myself in my room for a few days until I finished it. I wanted NO PART of spoilers for that ending after following the story for over 20 years.

But here I guess I was thinking of MAJOR spoilers intended for just that purpose: to intentionally spoil the ending for someone as a malicious gesture.

I think this spoiler business gets overblown a lot and people get upset over relatively minor things. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if someone hasn't read a book that is 23 years old they are not likely to get to it this week or next. And, two weeks from now, if you were to be asked the specifics of the so-called spoiler, you wouldn't be able to remember the details you are so worried about today. At least I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to remember.

WeDealInLead
06-21-2010, 05:58 PM
Good points. Although, I don't think it matters how old a book is and what year it was published. I read a lot but King isn't the only author I read and that's why I haven't gotten to The Tommyknockers yet.

Also, I had something spoiled for me in DT7. I was reading an entry on Wiki about the 6th book and clicked on a name of a certain character only to find out about his death in the 7th book. Bummer Town.

From Aaron's thread in this forum:

Calvin's Corner is a forum for general discussion about book collecting and other collectibles. Due to the nature of this forum the likelihood of spoilers is much less than in other areas of the site, although the possibility does still remain. Accordingly, this forum's Spoiler Requirements are as follows:

Content which would give away the end of the Dark Tower series MUST be marked with Spoiler Tags

Content which gives away deaths of major characters in the Dark Tower series MUST be marked with Spoiler Tags

Content which gives away the ending of any other King book MUST be marked with Spoiler Tags

These Spoiler Requirements apply to the Calvin's Corner forum specifically, and may not apply in other forums. When posting elsewhere, please always review that forum's Spoiler Requirements before posting potentially sensitive material. Spoiler Tags can be applied by typing SPOILER and /SPOILER in tags around the applicable lines of your post, or by clicking on the radiation icon in the formatting options in your post box. If you have any questions concerning possible Spoilers, please contact a member of site staff for clarification.

Thank you all, and have fun on the forums.

I don't think the posting regarding The Tommyknockers violated any of the above.

Like Carlos said, a malicious spoiler is one thing, but giving context to an oil painting is part of the purpose of a collector's forum....this is a fan site, so readers are going to stumble on details they didn't know and that's just the way it's going to be.

No offense to anybody, but any book that can be spoiled by one sentence would not be much of a book. I mean - "Jesus dies" doesn't spoil the Bible.

Hunter

Hunter, I've tried all the options that I can find in my scanning software and can't find anything that helps. I found, in the Help section, a mention of the moire pattern that said it was a

moire pattern: An undesirable pattern that appears when a graphic image is displayed or printed with an inappropriate resolution. Moiré patterns result from a complex combination of parameters, including the image size, image resolution, halftone screen angle, and output device resolution.

I've tried upping the resolution to the highest, but still no change. Changing the size doesn't seem to make a difference either. I don't know how to adjust the other items. The help has nothing else.

I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Again, I'm sorry about the picture quality of the cover. It's my scanner that seems to be putting in that matte look. The actual cover isn't like that.

Your scanning software should have a "descreen" option that will remove the moire patterns in your scans....

John

John,

If you are using Paperport, see if this helps:

Symptom:

How do I adjust color and gray images using Scan Manager to improve image quality?

Solution:

The Scan Manager has a wide variety of options to adjust your scanned images. Using those options you can produce the best possible scan of your documents, color photos, magazine articles, business cards, or any other items you scan.

The Scan Manager has three buttons: Descreen, Sharpen, and Auto Level-for quickly adjusting color and gray images. These buttons do not apply to black and white or halftone images.

Descreen Image:

Select this option when scanning a picture from a newspaper or magazine article, sales catalog, or other source that contains images with patterns or dots. Scans of patterns or dots sometimes have a distorted or wavy appearance.

The scanner scans the item to compensate for the patterns and dots, and produces a clearer image. The scanning may slow down a bit when this option is selected. You don't need to select this option when scanning photographs.

* Descreen
* Sharpen
* Auto Level

To Descreen an image:

1. Click the Descreen button.
2. Choose the appropriate option from the Descreen pop-up menu.
3. Watch the preview image as you select various options to see which one is best for your final scanned image.

Sharpen Image:

Sharpness determines the amount of blur in an image. Your scanner can sharpen an original blurred image by adjusting the blurry edges in sections of the image.

To sharpen an image:

1. Click the "Sharpen" button.
2. Choose the appropriate option from the Sharpen pop-up menu.
3. Original Image Sharpened Image

Your scanner can analyze a color image to automatically determine the best settings to match the colors of the original image. Click this button to let the scanner automatically adjust the color settings.

I just got a 1st printing of the Scribner PBs of Salem's Lot (All black cover) and Night Shift (perforated cover with hand and eyes) at a local flee-market. They were $.10 each, so I'm not converned if the whopping $.20 was wasted, just curious if they are worth anything?

Both books have covers in excellent condition. The exposed paper of the pages is yellowing, but unmarred. The Nightshift spine is fine, but the Sale's Lot spine is heavily creased.

I bought them for my own collection, not for resale value. Just curious how hard these actually are to find.

Randall Flagg

Not too tough to find. Both books are a good read-enjoy them for that. Twenty cents is a great price for the entertainment value.

jhanic
06-28-2010, 11:11 AM
I think about $5-10 for those in good condition would be a fair price. I think the Salem's Lot with a creased spine would be about $1.

I think John is about right on his prices. One of the interesting things about the paperback edition of NIGHT SHIFT with the cut-outs for the eyes is to try to find a copy with the eyes perfectly matching the cut-outs. It's not that easy. Most are off by a little or sometimes a lot.

Possibly the earliest. I have another copy dated May 4th and I know of another in April. Anyone here help me out with some info I don't have? (Dave, Bob, David, etc.). Also maybe with the meaning of "LP" in the inscription (Latest Piece, Album Reference ???) Thanx for any help guys. Be safe.

In the 70's and 80's, Tuesday was not a release day-there were no 'street dates'. As I recall books 'appeared' on the shelf Saturday's, and most any day of the week except for Sunday and Monday. Shipping was a M-F business.

Right. It's quite unusual for a book to be published during the first week of the year, isn't it? We do, however, have solid on-sale dates for some of the early books, like Carrie, for example. I think those dates were taken from advance copies or promo material. Hopefully our super-collectors can look up the rest of such dates that are missing from the above-mentioned list.

CARRIE, 'SALEM'S LOT, THE SHINING and NIGHT SHIFT were done in this format. It is a format that I like a lot. I am pretty sure there was only one printing of these. Personally I think they are difficult to find in really nice condition but are never very expensive.

CARRIE is probably the most interesting in this format. The first state dust jacket had the title horizontal on the spine but it didn't fit and couldn't be read easily on a bookstore shelf. So it was redone with the title vertical. I don't think any of the first state were ever sent out.

Very cool cover on that Carrie!! What printing is it? The Night Shift I have is a 13th printing with $19.95 on the jacket, from Doubleday. I have no info about these covers, It would be interesting to know how many different covers there are for these early books.

CARRIE is a 13th printing, 'SALEMS LOT is a 15th, THE SHINING is a 14th and NIGHT SHIFT is a 13th. As I said earlier I think there was only one printing of each in this format but I could be wrong on that.

All four have the same photo of King on the back panel.

Keep looking on eBay. Eventually they will show up and you can get a complete set.

Well not exactly.

I was hoping to post another great find, but no such luck. When ordering it I knew it seemed to good to be true but I had to take the chance, the picture and description were correct.

When it arrived in the mail today I knew the package was way to small for what I ordered. For only $100 this is what I received today...

It is a BCE copy with no DJ and a former Owner's name "whited" out inside.

I bought a nice hardcover Nightmares and Dreamscapes with a well cared for DJ at my local used bookstore this morning for $0.85. Nothing special, just a book. But I was proud!

It was supposed to be the Hodder & Stoughton Signed Limited Edition Desperation/Regulators.

I knew it was probabaly to good to be true but I had to take the chance in hopes of finding "That Awesome Deal." I will be getting my money back so I am not out anything but I sure would have loved to be able get those books for $100.

FYI: Only Desperation was signed (on a bookplate) on this set.

went to a little 2nd hand book store in waco texas a few years ago, scanned all the shelves and didn't find any thing... was on my way out the door and saw this copy of Rage sitting on a file cabinet behind the counter.

I asked the little old lady who owned the place how much she wanted for it.... she said she hadn't seen many of them around, so she wasn't really selling it.
I said... if you were to decide to sell it.... how much would you sell it for.
She says, well let me go do a little research on the computer, and went to the backroom. Of course I was like... so much for a good deal now... but she comes back in after a few minutes and says, I'll let you have it for 6 bucks.
Me, being the cheap ass I am, while trying to keep from shaking," Does that include tax?"

she says yes and I get it for $6.00 . It's not in fine shape.... but hey, only 6 bucks..... though my soul is probably going to hell for taking the litte old lady ha ha.
I'd feel bad, but she probably paid 25 cents for it in a trade, since most of the paperbacks she sold for 50 cents.
Only thing I can figure out is that when she "researched it" she must have only found info. on the paperback copy of the bachman books.

anyway... this is probably my best deal... unlike wiz, I don't have friends here who send me signed/personalized-to-me King books...which has to be the best deal ever. If any of you decide you want to be my best friend though... I'll send you my address.:)

So...ummm...you'd have walked out on it if she said you had to pay the tax on it, right?

Thanks! There's no story that I'm aware of. It's just something I bought from a friend here. :)

For my birthday, my wife had this Whelan piece matted and framed. The drawing is an original sketch that was included with the limited edition of Knowing Darkness.

Two different views. Sorry for the flash.
