OMG! It's one of my favorite Friends episodes... ever!

Joey: Uh, now Rach? These, ah, these little women...
Rachel: Yeah?
Joey: How little are they? I mean, are they, like, scary little?

Joey: Oh, yeah! Amy just burned Jo's manuscript. I don't see how he could ever forgive her.
Ross: Um, Jo's a girl, it's short for Josephine.
Joey: But Jo's got a crush on Laurie. Ohhh! You mean it's like a girl-girl thing? 'Cause that is the one thing missing from The Shining.

Joey: Oh! All blank and no blank makes blank a blank blank. Oh no-no, no! The end, when Jack almost kills them all with that blank, but then at the last second they get away.
Rachel: Joey! I can't believe you just did that!
Chandler: I can't believe she cracked your code!

Joey: Is that true? If I keep reading is Beth gonna die?
Chandler: No, Beth doesn't die. She doesn't die. Does she, Rachel?
Rachel: What?
Ross: Joey's asking if you've just ruined the first book he's ever loved that didn't star Jack Nicholson?

Joey: Beth is really, really sick. Jo's there, but I don't think there's anything she can do.
Rachel: Joey?
Joey: Yeah?
Rachel: You want to put the book in the freezer?

Thanks John. Speaking of signatures, I am wondering if a "stamped" signature is worth anything? Is it worth as much as a "written" signature? I have a couple of books where are "stamped" signatures that are part of the book cover. For instance: The Stand Complete and Uncut version. It has Stephen King stamped in red on the front cover?

jhanic
09-01-2009, 08:14 AM
Pixie, did you just get the slipcases or did you get them with the books included?

Either way, they're nice to have.

<edit> We crossed in posting. No, the stamped signature isn't worth anything extra. An authentic signature is worth at least $100 more than the value of the book, and, in some cases, even more.

John

That's what I've heard too. I got it for a little over £100 which I think is a very good buy! I'm not sure how to grade it but I would say it's VG/VG as it has some tears and bumps, but no parts of the DJ missing. Most of the damage is definitely age-related, I think.

Thanks Bob! I was especially worried about the spine of the DJ which supposedly often has laminate wrinkles (according to the info I found on Hutch's website) but this one is very smooth. The biggest damage is found on the distal corners of the DJ and the lower ridge of the spine of the DJ. Oh well, I'm not that picky about the condition of these older and more elusive books... I'm just glad I have it! The only ones I still need to essentially complete my US and UK sets of 1st/1sts are the UK Carrie and Night Shift and US 'Salem's Lot. There are a couple more 1st/1st books I don't own yet but they are easy to find at decent prices.

A non-King item, but I received the new Centipede Press book: Peter Straub's If You Could See Me Now and I gotta say it is a very impressive book. I like it better than any of the other Centipede Press books I've bought in the past. So he's getting better at producing his books and maybe this might be a little preview of Artists Inspired by Stephen King, because it does look similar in style.

Anyway here's a pic:

In the U.S. to my knowledge there isn't a complete box set sold. There are box sets books of DTI-DTIV, but not all seven in the series. There are some foreign books that gather the series into just two books.

jhanic

I think that there are different publishers for the first four books than the last three, so the chances of a complete boxed set is nil.

I know this is a total newbie question, but is the Dark Tower series available as a complete boxset?

In the UK the first 4 books were published by NEL in paperback in 2003. The last 3 books were published in 2005, 2006 and 2006 respectively by Hodder. Both NEL and Hodder are part of Hodder Headline and the publications were very similar. The theme of the book covers was the same for all imprints, the only differences being the NEL logo on the spines of books I-IV and the H (for Hodder) logo on the spines of books V-VII. The other difference is the size of font used on the front covers for each publisher for 'Stephen King' - 'The Dark Tower' and the title of each specific book. At first glance the 7 books look like they were all printed by the same publisher but they have in fact been done very similarly and with contrasting colours for each title. On the shelf the spines pretty well match up apart from the publishers logos which are not particularly intrusive. They could easily be taken for a set and I am very happy to have them sit in my bookcase.
You may be lucky like I was and be able to buy them all from one seller but if not, I would advise you to scour Amazon where you should be able to pick up a copy of each for not very much money.
Hope this helps.

That's one I don't have because I can't seem to find one in great condition.

Funny story, I was on the subway once and I saw a woman reading a copy. Hardcover - protected dust jacket, etc. Anyway, it was a flawless copy and I asked her if I could see it. Sure enough, was a first printing. I offered her $30 for it then and there, but she refused! lol!

I've just discovered that a french magazine from 1987 have printed "the boogeyman" in english.
I did read this in a fanzine... now the track starts, but as it's not exactly a big magazine, the chances seems really low to me as it's difficult to find any details on this old mag

But... who doesnt love hunting items? :cyclops:

The flyer was alot more than I expected and thought it might be interesting to some so I scanned it here...srry its way to big so had to cut and paste...

So only two F&SF magazines missing and I'll have all The Gunslinger complete :)

And for Watchmen and the bookmarks I owe thanks to Pam!! THANK YOU!!

The only bad thing: The promo magnets weren't present in the lot. I'm trying to track if it was the seller's fault or the friend who sent me the things forgot to put it in the package.

As it was my birthday yesterday, it is appropriate to leave you a little teaser of a new awesome Pride & Joy (1 of 5) that await me upon my return from Ann Arbor next week. These have been in the works for a millenia...I have always wanted Michael Whelan to do remarques for me in my S/L Gunslingers (I have 3 numbers, a PC copy and a Lettered copy). We have talked about it for more than two years. I left my books with him in March and last night in an e-mail birthday wish, he left me a little present. There will be 4 more!

Hope you like....I am in a swoon.

At first glance it looks like "just another signed CUJO" but check out the date.

The official publication date for CUJO was Sept. 8, 1981. The earliest signed copy in my collection was Sept. 7.

According to the seller (who lives in Hampden, ME) King did an early signing at the B. Dalton's in Bangor and this is from that signing on July 22, 1981 (about six full weeks prior to publication).

I probably have irrational exuberance but I am pretty excited to have this one.

Just a little personal update.

This morning I was awakened by a very high pitched, shrill, terrified scream coming from the bedroom of a 16 year old girl who is currently riddled with teenage angst that has my entire household walking on eggshells....

I would have certainly paid double for my rubber night shift "helping hand" and have without a doubt received a great return from my initial investment.
Now I will have to lay low with it until another child can experience this wonderful thrill.

I have an ebay account for buying which is private, and another for selling, as ebay don't allow you privacy as a seller.

Somehow my ABE account had an old credit card number and the original order was cancelled. I got my new credit card input and the Mid-Life Confidential proof is again on order by me. I don't know why the old card was still on the account. I've deleted it again.

Mulliens turned me on to an auction for a 1st/1st Insomnia with the white jacket, which I was looking for to replace my price clipped copy.

While looking at her other auctions, she also had the entire Green Mile paperback set 1st printings listed for $4.99 and a Pet Sematary 1st listed for 12.99

I asked if the PS had Y38 and she said yes.

I ended up getting all 3 auctions for under $20.

They just arrived today. I FINALLY (after 4 failed attempts) got the right jacket of Insomnia. The GMs are all mint except for very subtley yellowed pages. The Pet Sematary is not only a 1st, it has the 1st state DJ with 1982 for caretakers!

I'm extremely happy with the purchase!

Curious for an answer to this from the experts...

How rare is the 1982 jacket compared to the correct 1983, and how much of a difference in value is there?

Certainly not a difference like different states of 'Salem's Lot.
Pet Sematary is a hard book to find wih a Fine dustjacket. A fine 2nd state dj would be worth more than a good condition 1st state.
Both dj's in Fine condition, perhaps 10-20% premium for the 1st state.
So a $25 book might be $30 etc.

So, I'm checking out my Signed Cujo 1sts. I have a couple dated late September of 81 as well as one dated 8-16-81, (Inscribed to Greg) when I came across this one. Wasn't aware of the significance until I saw Bob's post. I need to stay more on top of the facts. How often does one get to stand up there with Bob?

http://usera.ImageCave.com/shibus/cujosig.jpg

At first glance it looks like "just another signed CUJO" but check out the date.

The official publication date for CUJO was Sept. 8, 1981. The earliest signed copy in my collection was Sept. 7.

According to the seller (who lives in Hampden, ME) King did an early signing at the B. Dalton's in Bangor and this is from that signing on July 22, 1981 (about six full weeks prior to publication).

I probably have irrational exuberance but I am pretty excited to have this one.

Oh man Bob. Sorry Buddy. Sure wasn't trying to one up you. Just surprised the heck out of me to have a couple signed prepublication. And earlier than one of yours could mean maybe earliest. I have a interest for those too.

I received a beautiful, almost mint copy of the UK Rose Madder 1st/1st with the black endpapers and the 'sans-Insomnia' DJ today!

I'm borrowing this picture from another copy that's on eBay right now, until I made a photo of my own :) it shows the differences between the two states:

http://i.ebayimg.com/06/!B,6-fw!CGk~$(KGrHgoH-D8EjlLlzKDlBKtnv5V3+!~~_12.JPG

The one currently on eBay is cheaper than what I paid by the way, and knowing the seller, it will be in excellent shape. So make haste and bid (http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-Stephen-King-Rose-Madder-Proof-Variant-Dustjacket_W0QQitemZ180410038243QQcmdZViewItemQQpt ZUK_Books_Fiction_GL?hash=item2a0146b7e3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14), my brethren!! Those seem fairly scarce, though I think a lot of them are "flying under the radar" because a lot of people don't know the one with the black endpapers are unique. I got my copy quite a while ago but didn't realize the dust jackets were different until the eBay auction.

You guys remember last December when Glenn Chadbourne commisioned 10 paintings to be done referred to as "Haunt your House". I ordered one of them and then promptly forgot about it figuring with Cemetery Dance involved in it it might be a year or 9 before I saw it. Well it came in yesterday and I thought I would share it. He did a great job on it. I Love it. Me, My Wife, My 4 girls and my dogs. Being a big Beetlejuice fan the Creepy thing coming out of the tree kinda reminds me of a sandworm. It's going to the frame shop today so if anyone would like to see the finished piece I'll post it when it comes back.

Sorry Jerome, I didn't think this could be considered a spoiler? I just noticed that the excerpt in the booklet does not simply constitute the first 'x' pages of the novel but that it is slightly abridged, presumably to maintain the flow and make this excerpt more 'self-contained'. If I did spoil anything, it's that there's more to read in the novel :D
