Very nice. This is the first Robin Furth I personally have seen.

I hope it's legit. I bought both from the same seller. The provenance (same for both comics) was:

You are bidding on a copy of Marvel's Stephen King- The Dark Tower - The Long Road Home #3. This issue is a rare 1:25 color variant cover and it is also signed by two members of the creative team: Peter David and Robin Furth. I got this comic signed at the New York Comic Con 2009.

$10 apiece, so I don't think I can go wrong.

To be honest, I never thought I'd own this book. I had it on me "to get" list, but didn't have much hope of owning it - at least not this decade. I had been saving up for a S/L 'Salem's Lot - I knew I had some money coming down the pipe line (severance from a job I got laid off from in the summer) that I figured would put over the edge in order to grab a copy. Anyways, I got ahead of myself in my savings and realized that if I saved for a few more weeks, with prices coming down I could probably get that elusive Stand S/L. The next morning I saw a post from batsker here on the site for a copy at a very affordable price. Steve was willing to hold it for a few weeks so I could save up the rest, and viola! - now I've got this gorgeous book on my shelf. Its quite a work of art - definitely one of the nicest books I've ever held, and certainly my "New Pride and Joy".

Thanks! I recently picked up the 20th Ann Edition of Song of Kali as well and today won an auction for a signed 1st Ed. Although I have to say, I read this book last week and while it was pretty good, I didn't like it as much as his other stuff I've read. Still it's good for a first novel.

I'm about 200 pages into Drood and like it so far. I also recently finished his series of Joe Kurtz novels (Hardcase, Hard Freeze, Hard As Nails) and they were very entertaining.

I have to say though, if you're a fan of It, pick up "Summer of Night" and the sequel, "A Winter Haunting." They are really good.

I'm also a big fan of Dan. I have only one book signed (the S/L edition of The Hollow Man) and two arcs (Drood and The Terror). I've been looking for Song of Kali S/L for some time but I'm looking for a good deal on that one.

I didn't read a winter haunting, but isn't Children of the night the sequel of "Summer of night"? At least I heard so.

My favorite of him? Phases of Gravity. In the second place: Summer of night.

The Hyperion saga is awesome as well. As for Drood, I'm on page 150 (I received for free the book plus two arcs with the letter from the publisher. I might have a chance of doing an interview with Dan but I still don't know which questions to ask him. Suggestions are very welcome!

Congrats on the Simmons S/L's.
Note: Be careful with The Hollow Man when inserting/removing from the slipcase. Perhaps it is unique to my copy, but the book was so snug that removal caused noticeable abrasion to the leather on the spine.
It looks like there are no announced Simmon's appearances in March for signings of Drood.

Excerpt from SF Chronicle review of Drood:

Simmons turned the excessive length of "The Terror" into a perverse virtue, using the book's enormity to highlight the monotony and claustrophobia of years spent trapped and starving on the ice. He isn't able to pull off the same trick twice. For all its inventiveness and historical detail, "Drood" sags a bit in the middle as Collins' pursuit of the elusive title character bogs down in repetitive action and exposition.
Nevertheless, "Drood" is a stunning exercise in misdirection, one that keeps the reader perpetually off balance until the last sentence.

Full review @ sfgate.com (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/03/01/RVV0161P0Q.DTL&hw=drood+review&sn=001&sc=1000)

Very nice. I wish there was a limited edition of Summer of Night. An excellent novel on par with IT.

Congratulations!

I have not read "Children of the Night" yet, but from what I understand, the character Kevin O'Rourke from "Summer of Night" is a priest in Children of the Night. "A Winter Haunting" is a pretty good ghost story, but I made the mistake of reading it before "Summer of Night." Dale is the main character and he goes back to his childhood home in order to write a novel.

I'm not a big science fiction fan, but plan on eventually getting to Ilium/Olympus and the Hyperion series.

I guess we got 5 or 6 inches. I am working form home today as thte 90 minute drive to work might take a few hours or more. Not worth it. I did swhovel out the drive this morning so that my wife could get to work! And I am really hoping the the USPS does show up. Isn't it part of their motto to always deliver! :-)

Dan Simmons is my current interest and as I've been reading his books I've also been trying to pick up his S/L editions. Here's the 4 books published by Lord John Press. All are the deluxe editions and I'm excited to have them in my collection. Also, Simmons' books are much easier on the wallet than SK. :)

Entropy's Bed at Midnight #61/100
Summer Sketches #33/200
Children of the Night #20/200
The Hollow Man #146/200

I just got this in yesterday. A custom bound edition of 'SALEM'S LOT using a text block from the 2004 Centipede Press edition. Bound by Gray Parrot of Hancock, Maine (close to Bangor, I think).

Sort of a grayish green leather on the spine and leading edges of the front and rear boards. Red leather diamond pattern on the spine with gold lettering. Marbled front and rear boards. They did a nice job.

Ahhh, that is good luck then! I decided against tracking down a PC copy of the AE. It seems that the S/L is just barely part of a "complete set" and just because its numbered I don't think the AE deserves to be included.

Not really my pride and joy but I'm still in shock over this ebay deal:

Thinner 1/1 US in mint condition
Thinner 1/1 UK near mint (just some aging to edges as is normal for this one)
Different Seasons 1/1 US near mint (one tiny chip to DJ)
Cujo 1/1 US mint condition

$43.49 + $25.00 for shipping

Wouldn't expect to get Thinner US alone for that total even.
Awesome!!

Here is my newest goodie (well it's not in hand yet but it's done:excited:). I contacted Alan M Clark a while ago about doing an original piece for me. Alan has done 2 DT paintings, Approaching the Tower the cover for CD's Complete Concordance which I own and another which Bob owns the original (can't remember what it was a cover for, Bob?). Turns out he has not read the series which surprised me but meant we had to go back and forth with ideas and descriptions from the books (which was a neat experience). Here is the sketch that came from the back and forth.

I don't have the Stephen King Universe thats why I have not seen your original on a book, I had purchased a print a while back from Alan, one of the things I like about Alan is he does a remarques on his prints for a very reasonable price.

I don't remember for sure since size was discussed around 2 months ago but I think it was like 12 X 19. I will let you know for sure when I receive it.

How this happened was Alan sent an email to those on his mailing list offering reduced prices on his artwork listed on his website, his wife had been laid off and work was slow, so I figured what the heck ask about doing a piece and it went from there.

Well, it has been some time since I posted something of my own in this thread. Well, on Friday, I got a letter in the mail that all by itself has become a pride and joy.

The letter was from Ned Dameron, and before we go any further I must apologize, but I am unable to share his contact info. Only by the grace of a fellow collector was I able to receive an introduction that enabled me to write to him.

I wrote to Ned and asked him many questions about how the Wastelands art developed in his mind and then on the canvas etc. I got back a 2 1/2 page letter (written long hand, not typed) that described the creative process for him regarding the artwork for the book. It is way cool. I do not want to share the whole letter, but I will transcribe certain parts that I think all of you as collectors will enjoy. And I quote:

"Illustrating King was exciting and the pictures formed easily in my mind. The specific character of Roland was, as you perceived, based on Chuck Connors - or a morphing of him into other earlier versions...earlier versions which to Don Grant seemed too much like Clint Eastwood.

While channel surfing I came across an old movie about Cochise (I think) with a Chuck Connors in very dark makeup and a black Prince Valiant wig--the blue eyes were left natural and seemed very piercing and incongruous but reminded me of discussions over Conan and Kull with Don...

The cross in that scene (refering to the Roland with gun illustration) was a simple aluminum bit found on the sidewalk during one of my usual treks for groceries. The gun was a $1,000 colt 45, the best in a local gun store."

I am absolutely thrilled with the content of the letter as it provides key insight into Ned's creative thinking process as he did these illustrations. So, it is my new pride and joy.

You may be the only one here who does not like the Author's signature on their books. But I'm with you on the Artist's contributions.

I personally would not pay a penny more for an artist's drawing.

Sam
03-18-2009, 08:59 AM
I see having an author sign a copy of the book they wrote as on par with having an artist sign a copy of their painting. It adds a little extra for me. Mostly though, the signatures I have were gained by actually meeting the author. That's where the treasure comes for me, in the memories of that meeting.

Congratulations to you both, Jeremy and Ari. Nice stuff. I've never seen a French proof copy of a King book.

Neither did I. I knew it exists, because of the litterary process, and because I own proofs of Bernard Werber (not easy to get : 1 because the publisher once invited 50 bloggers and gave them one -- i found it on ebay --, and the 2 others because the writer gave them to me... I saw another one on ebay, but couldnt bid on it), otherwise I never saw a King proof.

I own a review copy of Carrie (1976 in France), and I know of a review copy that is actually different of the published Bag of Bones (cf joined picture.. which, I reckon, looks like a british arc no?) that a friend of me have...

But otherwise, I DID never see a french King proof :-)
I WISH to find a Carrie one, or an early book... What would be the FIRST 'edition' of a comic? Something like a Publisher's Copy? (I am thinking about Creepshow)

Last month, I sent Ned Dameron a letter asking him if Chuck Connors had been the influence for his illustration of Roland.

Here is his response:

"Yes, Chuck Connors did influence the Roland character -- my preliminary studies were too much like Clint Eastwood for Donald Grant's taste. He suggested I push the character in another direction -- I agreed. I had earlier done a Conan & Kull for two of Mr. Grant's illustrated books -- while channel surfing, I happened upon an old Connor's movie where he played the Apache Cochise (I think). The improbable combination of black, page-boy wig, tan make-up and icy-blue eyes seemd to be the Eskimo-Viking prototype from Thule. Then, as I pondered this, the lantern-jawed cowboy came to mind. So, he was a major influence. I liked the way it turned out, thanks for mentioning it."

Chuck Conners was also the rifleman! Makes sense!

Thanks for sharing this !

Actually, Dameron's Roland has always reminded me of a beloved great uncle that died in late 1990. Less than a year later, I was looking at Dameron's work. I sat and looked at the close-up of Roland firing his gun for quite a long time when I first saw the picture.

Yeah, it's really cool.

I'm going to geek out and probably frame it, the card has that great pic of The Gunslinger in front of the Tower with a crow on his back.
