A very, very nice purchase, Mr. R.T. I have the Rap and the necklace but no envelope either. I also have the signed copy of Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon that was distributed at the party, in addition to a color photcopy of the quiz that was done then.

The outside is not that attractive but that was by design. The inside is extremely well done and very rich feeling. The paper they used (I don't recall what it is right now) is the stuff that very expensive lithographs are done on. You know as you turn the pages that you are feeling very expensive paper. Even looking at the printed words you know you are looking at a book that was painstakingly put together. I think it is a heck of a book but it just didn't resonate that much with King fans. Maybe it was a bigger hit with the artsy crowd.

There are also large sheets of some material (linen, maybe?) between each of the lithographic illustrations. I think it was to prevent colors from transferring to the next page and maybe to aborb moisture and to protect. Really first class production.

A few years ago I bought some Lt's Rap items from Kathy Bates personal assistant. She attended the party. She told me she admired the necklaces so much and wanted a couple for her daughters She asked King's office where they were obtained and managed to get the last few they had. I managed to get the contact info from her. I tried to see if any others could be gotten. As it turns out they were custom made and there were none to be had.

I had a few Lt's Rap w/o the necklace. I was never able to find exact matches for the pendant, chain and clasps.

I don't doubt your story. I certainly have no insider info. But Stu at Betts told me someone from King's office went to some inexpensive store like a TG&Y or other five and dime and bought a bunch of them. Inexpensive costume jewelry is the way he described it. I've never had one in my possession so I am only going on what I was told.

It's funny how stories get started and propagate. I suspect the necklaces were a bit nicer than dime store jewelry and the version Dave heard sounds more probable.

It's more than just me hearing the story. When I contacted PurpleGrace they knew all about the Rap party and confirmed they were the source of the necklace. One the items I received from Kathy Bates assistant was one of the peace sign pendants w/o necklace she was able to obtain. It was an exact match to the pendant in my complete Rap set. Inside the small box that held the pendant was a small business card from PurpleGrace.

I replaced the battery in mine when I first got it several years ago, set the clock and displayed it for quite a while. The battery eventually wore down and I just took it out and did not replace it. I had this (probably irrational) fear that a dead battery may eventually leak fluid and damage the book.

Nothing overly exciting showing up at my place lately.

A 1st UK of Slade's "Ripper" - his most scarce book and next to impossible to find in decent condition. I have a signed copy, but couldn't pass this one up due to the condition.

A 1st of the Waste Lands, from the link that Bob posted a few weeks back. Again, nothing too exciting - I sold my trade copy when I got my first S/L and ended up feeling I shouldn't have. This one definitely makes my vote as "always remove shrinkwrap" - the shrink was stuck to the jacket and left a gross residue on it, luckily I was able to clean it up and it didn't leave any damage.

And finally, the only one worthy of getting the camera out; a review copy of Slade's most recent book, "Crucified". The UK hardcover (only hardcover) didn't have a proof, and I haven't gotten a straight answer from my contact at Penguin (the trade PB publisher) - but I was able to got this from her anyways.

A little while ago someone posted about some DT influenced art by Zach McCain. I just purchased this:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/zachmccain.jpg

This is the original pencil drawing that was colored on the computer to make the prints that are for sale. Also got a pencil drawing of a coyote that was shown on his website that I really liked. I like several pieces a lot which is funny because the Mordred painting that was the subject of the original post did not appeal to me.

I also received today my LRH variant hardcover signed/personalized by Lee Bermejo the cover artist.

I was wondering if you would mind posting the link to the site you got this from, i would love to treat myself to one of those.

http://www.zachmccain.com/

or

http://www.horror-mall.com/

Although, the one Dave got is 1/1. He should have coloured ones available though, either through his website (first link) or his store at Horror Mall (second link).

I just won this:

Unique Stephen King Autograph (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260333372859)

Seems like a real signature, and the price was right.

In addition to the signed card I won in the auction above, the seller had this one as well that I just bought.

Thanks guys! I'd been looking at it on Ebay for about ten days trying to make a decision to get it or not. I felt the BIN price was great value but financially tricky to fit in being the holiday season. Then Sterling hit the floor and the Euro strengthened, so I took the plunge.
It sure is a beautifully produced book.

OMG

I received the MOST AWESOME gift for Christmas, something I have been searching for for over 5 years, and by the generosity of Bob, an assist from Karen and the love of my wife Valerie I am now the proud owner of the:

ORANGE GUNSLINGER PLUME PROOF!!!!!!!!

Bob, you have touched my heart in that special Collector's place with your generosity, kindness, sneakiness. I am forever grateful. You should have been here when I opened it....I just can't believe it.

Story in short: Bob knows how much I want this book and how rare they are. He has 2 copies and decides to offer me one, but as the holidays approach (this is early November), he decides to contact Valerie my wife and does so with an assist through Karen. So the cloak and dagger stuff occurs over the next few weeks. My mother-in-law pays for the book (so I do not see a charge), Bob mails the book to a family friend in town, my son keeps the book in his closet until I receive it. I LOVE YOU ALL. Thank you so so so so much. So here it is:

Book, letter from publisher and 4 pages of e-mail correspondence between Bob and my wife

Thats so cool bob!, this forum is great.

I was just thinking to myself as I came onto the forum just how the partner of a super-collector would go about buying a King related item, then I thought how cool it would be if someones partner was to contact someone from the forum (yes, my first thought was bob would be the man to go to) to find out what King related items are on their wish-list. The actually tale wasn't far off :excited:

As for me I got the paperbacks (I didn't own any edition of them :scared:) of the Gunslinger Revised and Wastelands from my younger bro today, he has no cash at all so he must have used his Uni bursary to fund his xmas prezzies.

I've sold three or 4 of them. About 10 years ago I bought all I could find. There wasn't much interest in the title back then probably since it was a proof of the 1988 Plume version. Not many considered there may not have been any proof of the Grant version.

Just After Sunset (UK Limited)
Postscripts 10 (S/L, slipcased Ed.)
Book of the Dead (S/L, slipcased Ed.)
The Anubis Gates -- Tim Powers (Ziesing, S/L, slipcased Ed.)
Psycho II -- Robert Bloch (S/L, slipcased Ed.)
Taverns of the Dead (S/L, slipcased Ed.)

Waiting on a couple of others, but I told myself that I would take a break from any further purchases for a while once 2009 started. We'll see how that goes. ;)

Also, if anyone happens to have an extra copy of the 35th anniversary S/L Psycho, published by Gauntlet Press, please let me know. There are a couple on Ebay, but I'm thinking $300+ is a bit much.

Yup, the Bermejo is my favorite cover! Dave is absolutely awesome! I was blown away by his generosity. Between that and Wiz sending me my favorite Jae Lee cover signed, it's been an amazing year of gifts for me. I am deeply grateful to both of these wonderful collectors. Kinda funny how ka is a circle....
What Bob did for me this holiday, I also did for Matt through his wife Dora, owners of this site. She contacted me looking for a special present for Matt, and we did a deal behind his back. So, while I was playing Secret Santa, Bob was doing the same thing to me! I hope Matt liked Dora's gift and my extra freebie!

I was so glad to finally get a chance to come in and read your story David. I think it's so cool that your wife got you the way mine did.

I've been so busy with the baby, I barely had time to react to the amazing gift you sent...my wife totally got PAID (scenic route ;))

I put a pic of it in the loot thread, one of the coolest books I have ever owned and I can't thank you enough for conspiring with Dora to get it for me.

And I love the extra :excited:

Happy to

My wife decided this year she would try and find me a collectible King book without having any idea what I wanted. Assuming anything Dark Tower would work, she contacted David. They have met on two occasions and she just loves him.

She had heard me say one time that I would love to own all the first editions of The Dark Tower books so that must have been where she started.

You should have seen my face when I opened the box and looked up at her. She giggled and laughed, rolling this way and that. I had no idea she would go to that kind of trouble to make this happen for me. Had it sent to the bank, her and her co-workers puzzled over what was so cool about it for a while.

I know both of these individuals (Dora and David) are among the highest caliber humans I have ever met but I was still taken back by the generosity and work on my behalf. Just the best Christmas ever on every level. I showed my grand daughter the book knowing someday maybe I could give it to her.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/W_G_1st.jpg

David also through in this amazing extra which I have seen before. It has been donated for giveaway two years running and I always wanted one. So when I saw it, that was when the maniacal laughter started. :excited:

I just received this today:

UK Danse Macabre (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220325538772&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=012)

When going through some of my saved notes, I found this from an auction by shibus back in 2006:

"Danse Macabre" Written by Stephen King and Published in 1981 by MacDonald. True UK First Edition as Stated on the Copyright page and Lacking a Number Sequence. One of only 600 Copies. A Very Low First Printing for any SK book and matched only with the UK Carrie. Book is N/Fine with Straight Spine, Sharp Corners and Bright Gold Lettering. 3 small Circles in Red ink on the FFEP. Dust Jacket is VG with Small amount of Chipping to Head and Heel of Spine, 1 1/2" V Shaped tear to Top rear and Minor wear along flaps and edges. Protected in Mylar cover.

I was amazed to see that he said there were only 600 copies of this produced. Is this correct? The auction I won says 1000 copies.

I've heard estimates state there were as few as 100 copies and no more than 1000. My experience makes me believe the HB print run is much closer to 100 than 1000.

Patrick - Yup. CGC for the BMV costs dough for sure. Usually more than a hundred for a 9.8, not uncommon at all. The cheapest I've seen them is for about $70.00.

ETA: Right now, the hardest thing to find CGC'd at 9.8 is the 3rd Printing of Gunslinger Born 1 - this cover :

It'll be interesting to see what exactly that Insomnia is when you receive it.

Its got the S/L tray case, but in the listing someone asked, and the seller said it is not signed.

So, I wonder if it is a gift edition that somehow ended up in the S/L tray case, if it is an unsigned S/L?

Does that ARC still have some argentinian dust inside? ;) I remember that someone told me that it was for a friend when I sent it, so maybe is that one :)

A few weeks ago, right before Christmas, I was in the local Barnes and Noble. We have a huge used book section at this one and in a case is some rare books. As I walked by one caught my eye and I came back and found this title:

CONVERSATIONS WITH STEPHEN KING: TIM UNDERWOOD AND CHUCK MILLER, EDITORS, FEAST OF FEAR

It was 20 dollars and in excellent condition so I bought it for myself. I haven't had any time to read it yet since I am still reading the DT series, but I am very curious about it. I never heard of it before and can't wait to read it.

Anyone have any back story on this book?

It's one of a series of three that were published by Underwood Miller in the late 80's. Kingdom of Fear: The World of Stephen King (1986), Reign of Fear: Fiction and Film of Stephen King (1988), and Feast of Fear: Conversations with Stephen King (1989). All were published in a trade hardcover and a signed limited edition in slipcase. Reign was edited by Don Herron, the other two by Underwood and Miller.

Thank you, John.

Are the other two hard to come by?

I think Fear Itself was also in there somewhere.
