The illustration in the bookplate is the same as on the back of the envelope of the DVD that's included in the Collector's Edition of Just After Sunset. It illustrates the stones in "N.".

I don't think he did any "official" sigings for Cell, but I could be wrong.

Just got an email from the seller....here is what he had to say:

Yes, I did go to the event. It was pretty cool. A crowd of about 200 all had folding chairs in an auditorium type setting, there was a brief introduction, then King spoke for about an hour. He did a reading and alluded to Duma Key, which was about 9 months out. Answered some questions, then that was it. No book signing, no meet and greet. In that sense it was a bit of a disappointment, but hey, any chance you get to see King in person is a chance you have to take.

Mr King actually stepped up when someone else could not and taught a special class during this writing clinic. He then did the evening event which was open to the public.

10 total to the book's editor, King, Joe Hill, Matheson

ARC is Advanced Readers Copy. I'm not sure of the Club99, but I assume it's a club that has subscribed to all of Gaunlet Press' output. I think that 75 copies is accurate, with 35 of those having the hole punched in the back. This is a fairly low number of copies.

The only stupid questions are those you DON'T ask--those are the ones that get you in trouble.

ARC - Advance Review Copy. They are sent out to reviewers so they can read and review the book before it is released to the public.

Club 99 is a Gauntlet only club, where a member pays a large amount of money and that person receives free arc's of all the books, and other things for life.

And while we are on the subject of MW, I think these auctions flew under most people's radar.

Last month, Michael did a Palavercon thing in Altoona Pennsylvania called IlluXcon, where he painted with other artists on several canvases. The artists donated 5 of them to the guy who ran the event and he put them up on eBay to recoup some of his costs or to fund a similar event next year. I bid on two and won one of them. Here is the painting I won, for $204.50! It is signed by Whelan and one or two other artists.

Here is a link to the completed auction. You can see the other artwork if you go to Completed auctions for this seller. I really wanted the Dragon art, but got outsniped by $10.

yea, i had been bidding on the same painting wiz won, but i only bid 175. my fav was the one of the woman sitting in the branches growing out of the guy's head. i agree that the dragon was the most Whelan-esque, but from looking at the pictures of the event, i believe the black, bat-faced creature was the one he started on first and was his base design.

Well guys, some light financial stress caused me to have to sell my S/L Firestarter. Thats the bad news. BUT - the good news, with the Canadian dollar so far in the shitter these days I was able to convert it into a S/L Dolan's Cadillac (my favourite King short story), and another book that I put a good offer in for and which I am almost 100% will get, plus $500 for Christmas!

So, a little disappointing to see it go, but I think I did well given the current King market, and that mixed with the CDN $$ made it a good time to sell.

Add in the two new books and Christmas flexibility, and I'm feeling pretty good.

Will post pictures when everything gets here.

the amazon ce is the only one outside of the trade edition iirc. but at a run of 100,000 and the fact that the only part that replicates her handwritten copies is the intro (the rest is in a standard type font), i'm starting to doubt if it's worth the $100 the are asking. but at least it's going to charity. i'm keeping my order for the trade, but i cancelled my order for the CE in favor of another LSoE AE. Very nice. Having lots of family history in WWII Nazi Germany, I've always had a fascination with the post war study of the era.

If you're interested in the subject, I'd highly suggest you read Professor Evans' trilogy, e_taylor. I think it's the ultimate story of the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. Thoroughly fascinating from the first sentence. He writes like a novelist, not a historian.

I love the look of those, and I feel they're the "real" editions, especially due to Americanization of the text. My Canadian Beedle should be on its way soon, too.

I've got a copy of the US and the Canadian hardback coming to me next week. I thought about ordering the UK one, but since it's pretty much the same as the Canadian, I didn't think it was worth the extra shipping cost for another copy.

A very interesting and (for me anyways) exciting new record. This is Steven Wilson's (of Porcupine Tree fame) debut solo album "Insurgentes". The pictures do not do this justice. It is a cloth hardbound artbook by Lasse Hollie, with the 4 10" LPs bound in and limited to 1000 copies. I haven't decided if I will open it up, or just wait for the CD release to listen to the music.

It had been on my "to buy" list for a few years, and one showed up in the UK for about $140 CDN shipped. With an issue price of $225 US, I couldn't resist.

If I were a betting man, I'd say you wouldn't be disappointed if you purchased a copy.

You are very welcome, and I too and glad to share these stomping grounds with the likes of you! I'm happy you'll be able to jump right into Slade - but be warned, its certainly not for the faint of heart! For his third book, the publisher capped the # of deaths in the contract, where if more people died in the story, a zero came off Slade's paycheck!

I just received my deluxe and trade editions of The Tales of Beedle the Bard! Yeah!!!

John

I've opened the deluxe edition and it has to be one of the most lavish productions I've ever seen. The book itself is small with a silk bookmark, and has a raised metal design on the covers with blue or green (I can't tell with the lighting I have) "jewels" enclosed within and a metal clasp. It is enclosed in a purple felt bag with gold-colored drawstrings and Rowling's signature sewn in gold thread. This is all set within a very large traycase (about the size of the box for the s/l Uncut Stand) that seems to be made of faux leather with designs etched on the cover and spine. A packet of illustrations (Collector's Edition Prints) is also included in the front cover of the traycase.

Here's the illustration from the Amazon website:

Being the nice girlfriend that I am - I didn't open the Amazon Exclusive as I bought it for my girlfriend for Christmas. I wrapped it already, in the cardboard, and it's sort of driving me nuts !

I have a friend who is going to bring their copy to work on Monday and let me get a look and feel of it in person.

I will say - I was very impressed with the packaging that Amazon used. Very protective.

Wow, and what do you all think - is 100,000 total a lot or a little?! To me, for anything Harry, that doesn't seem like very many.

jhanic
12-05-2008, 05:01 AM
Agreed, 100,000 of anything about Harry Potter seems fairly low. I've been reading the reviews on Amazon regarding the Collector's Edition and a few have commented on how they feel cheated for spending so much money for the edition. I think they "know not what they say".

I'm looking forward to getting the Collector's Edition of Beedle the Bard, although it is a Christmas gift for my daughter. I've heard really good things about it. I'm not sure how you can honestly feel cheated since the profits are going to a charity.

I did get confirmation from amazon.com that it has been shipped so there were no problems after all. Just shipping separately.

Hey All - My HarryPotterHead friend found this at Amazon. Apparently it is a limit of a MAXIMUM of 100,000 copies.

Per Amazon's agreement with the Children's High Level Group, Amazon may produce up to a maximum of 100,000 Collector's Edition copies.

( CHLG is JKR's charity which is getting the proceeds )

Oh, and my friend who got hers thinks it is gorgeous and now I'm thinking to maybe get another one, just to put away.

For Christmas last year, my niece (who worked in a movie theater at the time) gave me a mint two-sided The Mist poster - the kind that goes in the marque outside. The back is literally printed backwards so that when the light hits from behind it reinforces the image. Pretty cool. :D

Bob - the back panel does show some wear, a tear and some scratching.

This one was Greg Hurlstone's copy that he had on eBay (although I got it direct from him). And once again, he described the book much harsher than it actually is.

Long story short - Greg Hurlstone is a great seller and a great guy.

Pickle, just don't concentrate on the later issues and ignore the earlier ones. Every once in a while you can find an earlier first for some very good prices. It's not common, but it does happen.

Agreed, outside of the first five Doubleday books, first editions won't set you back too much.

I myself split them up into three categories, "the first five" which are relatively rare and relatively expensive, "1979-1986" which are fairly abundant, but depending on condition can set you back some cash, and then "the last 20 years" which with the exception of one or two are very abundant and can usually be had for under $10.

Using these categories, I search around for the 79-86 books, and if I see a deal I'll grab it; I won't buy the "last 20 years" books online unless I can get two or three at a time - these ones can be found at used bookstores with patience, and I've got nothing by time. As for "the first five", I have yet to add any of these to my collection, but am actively looking to add two or three within a few months. My problem is that once I save up $400, I'm more inclined to get one of the cheaper S/Ls than the hard to find 1st.

I finally got my Third Reich Trilogy set from England today! Talked about it here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showpost.php?p=295772&postcount=7) before. So happy. And the third volume won't even be released here in the US until the end of March.

This is a great set, very pretty. The books are not leatherbound like I thought, but of very thick cardboard that's kind of matte to the touch. The slipcase is made out of the same material, only thinner. Not sure I've ever had any books like these in my hands before. The books inside are just like the trade editions, but the paper is extremely good. I think it's even better than Grant's paper used on the DT series. It's very heavy, has a very pleasant textural feel to it. Again, never held books like this before. And they're heavy, even the shorter first volume, not to mention the other two 900+ page bricks. So here's a few shots then:

The big thing itself:

So with the impending release of the LSoE AE, and the lonely WotC AE I have sitting on my bookshelf, I decided to it was time to round out my DT collection with the remaining AE's and first editions. So I recently purchased:

2nd Ed Grant Gunslinger in great condition and a very nice price. (I'm starting with a 2nd, I'll work my way up to a 1st eventually ;) )
1st Ed Drawing of the Three (Signed by Phil Hale).
1st Ed The Waste Lands
AE Song of Susannah
AE The Dark Tower
And I also picked up one of those Wizard and Glass promo books on the cheap off ebay a couple days ago too.

On a side note, I discovered a little Book Nook used book store today by where I work, and wandered in during lunch. I was suprised to find a fairly large amount of SK hardbacks. A whole 5 foot long shelf stacked with them, in various conditions. Many were fairly beat up/missing DJ's/stamped/etc, but from browsing through them really quick, I think there might be quite a few gems in there. Possible 1st ed Pet Semetary/IT/Cujo/Firestarter/Buick 8/Tom Gordon/Regulators/Needful Things/Gerald's Game/Night Shift . . . and more. I'm going back soon armed with some info from the HOW TO: 1st Editions thread to see how many check out.

2 MASSIVE BOOKS, like dictionnaries.
Unfortunately i got them late (i was being told i'd get them couple of months ago!!! and no news since)... so i dont have matching numbers :
book 1 #2543
book 2 #5722 (out of 6000 :s )

I agree completely on the packaging. Not an speck of padding, but thank goodness they ( I got two sets ) survived.

When I get a chance, I'll take some pics to show the size in contrast to stuff in the US.

I am very happy and hope they do another set!

I had kind of a hassle ordering through amazon.fr on account of my mastercard seeing a "foreign" order, but getting the set has more than made up for it. Well worth the effort.

Turtlex, pasuik & wizard : glad you enjoy it. I ALMOST decided to do not post it as thought wouldnt interest anyone... and decided to post it because of the "new" cover.. :-)

and yeah, i completely forgot that US comics are definitely smaller. The french ones are hardcover, and sort of A4 size i guess.
It isnt really cheap, but this is a set with the whole "gunslinger born" saga.... still more expensive than the american omnibus

I am forever thankful. This set is very unique and no way I would have found it on my own.

I'd say the size is about the same as a CGC graded comic, including the CGC case. If that helps.

As I said. I love these!

Thanks for the pics. Dumb question of the day - it's in French right?.

Marvel always releases new hardcovers as 'premiere' edition first in the States anf UK, if these do well then I really hope they release an 'oversize' edition which would likely contain both Gunslinger Born and Long Road home in one 28.2cm/11.1" hardcover. They do release some mini-series as oversized books (eg Marvel Zombies) but these are few and far between.

Man I sound like an idiot when I start going on and on about this kind of thing but with a visual medium like comics they really benefit from a full size format :excited:

some extra details : each book contains 2 or 3 episods (#) and is published every.... 4-5 months. The tome 4 is due to be published between january and april. BUT i guess that once all the books of a saga are published, they will offer a set of them. So wait that the next 3 books are published (the long road home) and you'll get a set : but maybe not before the end of 2009??? :s
the wait is really long!

oh and... i dont know if you opened the books to have a look, but each episod have a full page illustration corresponding to a variant cover

Congratulations, Karen. I would think that since you have been so intimately involved in the project while at Grant that having a personalized copy makes it so much more meaningful. Sweet.
