Nice, congrats. What's the painting in the background?

Thanks! That's Whelan's "End of the Road" giclee listed on Betts last month.

You will have a hard time gathering all of TMSG cubes. Even more troublesome is the cost to launch into "space". Currently it's over $10K per pound for payload launched into orbit.
You could probably locate and purchase hundreds of TMSG, but no one really knows how many were produced for the Blockbuster DVD promo. My guess is >2,500. Most are collecting dust somewhere.

BTAIM, to acquire 500 cubes might cost 3 years of you life and $50,000+.
To launch those would be ~$5,000,000 (1lb. each including packaging).

Signed 1st/1st Dark Tower VII with slipcase won from the Lilja's Library/Very Fine Books contest. Apparently it was signed at an event with Charlie Rose interviewing King. The book came with the ticket stub.

First contest I've won where it was something of actual value as the prize!

Oh my God, I know what this book is! This was the copy that was going to make the rounds from author and artist to author and artist around the world getting signed and remarqued then auctioned for the Haven Foundation. I signed it, Amber signed it, her brother (one of the artists) signed and remarqued it, and then we put it in a box and mailed it to Ukraine to get it signed and remarqued by Sergiy Krykun. We figured we'll start at the hardest location then go from there. So yeah, last time I saw this book was seven years ago when I mailed it to Ukraine. And it got lost. Fuckers.

Where/who/what? How many bookplates did King sign for insertion in this version of JAS?

tippy4
08-13-2020, 07:26 PM
So Ari has one.......and I have one. Both are Collector's Sets.

Ari's came from a acquaintance who at the time worked for Scribner.

Anybody else have one of these signed bookplates.....in either a Trade or Collector's Set?

Anybody know the origin story?

I am betting these were never meant for the public.

I've just received a package I was waiting for almost a month and while I consider myself a very patient man, this one got me all anxious :D.

I never thought I'd own one of these. They're so elusive I couldn't find a signle one in more than ten years, but thanks to Bob Jackson, who I miss a lot around here, today I received not one but SIX copies of The Maine Campus with King pieces in them.

For me, these items are pure GOLD and I'm in debt with Bob for the unique opportunity he gave me. :)

The Main Campus (and King's pieces in them) are all available from the Main Campus Archives (https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/mainecampus/index.33.html). You can search for and view each edition by year and then by month.

Bryan Burnette has a good article that covers all of Kings contributions here: A Survey of Kings Garbage Truck (https://thetruthinsidethelie.blogspot.com/2020/03/a-survey-of-kings-garbage-truck-part-1.html)

How is the artwork in person? While I know these are long gone, debating tracking down a copy on the secondary market - but not sold on the artwork. Front piece looks nice though.

Some great stories in the volume, but I always seem to come back to 'The Winter Market' as a favorite. Of the non-Sprawl stories - 'Dogfight' is a really nasty piece of work and 'The Belonging Kind' has grown on me over the years as well.

So I figured I’d post a pic of my meager “collection” and amuse the long term collectors on this site of my naïveté while first deciding to wade into collecting Stephen King books (which came into being as my obsession with The Dark Tower series grew with each book after I started them in early 2019...I just recently finished WotC so still on my first journey.)

I had completely fallen in love with the series by the time I finished W&G but I knew it was something special as early as TDotT. Having decided I wanted a nice set of the books I headed to Amazon but refuse to buy books branded with “Now a Major Motion Picture!” :angry_002:

I eventually found a gorgeous leather-bound set on Etsy and came close to pulling the trigger a few times until discovering the original hardcovers each had full-page color artwork in them. After confirming the Etsy set did not have them I decided to get the original books. My thought was, “I know! I’ll take that $400 and get a nice copy of the first edition of The Gunslinger and then get the others at used book stores.” Oh my sweet summer child. Thus started my education on the value of Stephen King books and collectible books in general. I’ve been amazed at the beautiful editions I see posted here and how much lettered editions go for. I truly had no idea that book collecting could be such an expensive hobby or that publishers put out such intricate editions.

So the King shelf on my single paltry bookcase consisted only of Cycle of the Werewolf and The Mist novella until a few weeks ago. I’ve read/listened to other King but didn’t own them. Since then I started tracking down DT books and any other King novel that ties in. Insomnia is in the mail but shown here is what I have so far. Plus I grabbed Revival as I keep hearing how good it is. Most other books here are art or lore books from various nerdy crap I’m into. Until the path of the beam came along I never really thought about collecting books or even keeping the ones I read (and over the past five years I’ve really gotten into audio books as I commute for work or go on road trips.)

The funny thing is I was so excited to find WotC and SoS at a used bookstore just a few weeks ago but am now already looking to replace them since I rapidly picked up excellent copies of all the other DT books. Thanks to TnTzDad here I was able to knock out the Viking first editions of I-IV. Someday I do hope to get a F or NF copy of the Grant release of The Gunslinger, though probably second edition...we’ll see [emoji1].

Mom used to buy these at the grocery store each month and when I came home to visit from college she would present them to me (already read by her). I could have bought them on my own, of course, but it just became our thing for 6 months. Glad to have something nice to store them in now. Well done by Garrell. Thanks, Sir. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200910/0b6bfbfb7afd1cb130d4af23512aab1f.jpg

That is a beauty of a case. I've ordered two myself for both US and UK editions. I too still have my original US 1st that I purchased each month while stationed in Louisiana. No clue or care about 1st printings back then.

Just arrived, and Bill was nice enough to match my number very late in the game to my number for Neuromancer:

How is the artwork in person? While I know these are long gone, debating tracking down a copy on the secondary market - but not sold on the artwork. Front piece looks nice though.

Some great stories in the volume, but I always seem to come back to 'The Winter Market' as a favorite. Of the non-Sprawl stories - 'Dogfight' is a really nasty piece of work and 'The Belonging Kind' has grown on me over the years as well.

Subpress just emailed and said some copies are still available after shipping out all preorders.

Oddly enough, I happened to have an very early morning work meeting today - saw the email and was able to get a copy. I'd have been asleep normally - nice reward for the early morning.

i still cant post pictures, but if you go through this thread, i only posted 1 time before. Wrote up my big long and boring story only to get upstaged by Gerald Winters 10 minutes after posting. Years later, i thought i would post here for the second time.

As PRESIDENT of the MATT FISHER Fan Club (it says so in my header). I am privy to a few perks from Matt. Every few years he has GIFTED me something as a thank you, or to cheer me up during dark days or even just for no reason at all. Yesterday was one of those NO Reason at all. Just a really nice note for working with him and working together on growing our signed collections. 1 year he sent me a signed copy of JOYLAND Illustrated, another year it was a signed copy of Charlie the Choo Choo. He knows i am a fanatic in getting all of KIng's first edition books signed. Well he outdid himself yesterday. He knew i was looking and looking for a very special PROOF! I had him looking for years.

He wrote me a personal and very nice note stating that he was reorganizing his bookshelves and noticed something terribly wrong. He went on to say he found that he actually had 2 US IT Proofs , He was looking for one for me for over a year! And he found it on his shelf! He just sent it in the mail as a very generous gift. I know many of you deal with him quite often and I know he tries to be fair/honest and helpful whenever possible. But i am truly lucky to find a like minded collector, who I can call a friend and a gentleman! I found a few really good friends on this site and truly appreciate Matts help in building the collection i have!

Thank You for my AWESOME proof. Now i only need a Gunslinger S/L with a slipcase. :panic::panic::panic::panic::panic::panic::panic:: panic:

Awesome. I think you'll really like it. It's got a great quality and feel to it.

My copy turned up super fast. You were right about the artwork - it's nicer in person than pictured on the website. I still don't think the cover art is hugely relevant to the work, but quite a few of the interior illustrations are cool and nicely represent the associated story. The artwork for 'The Belonging Kind', 'New Rose Hotel' and 'Hinterlands' in particular stand out.

I wish the dust jacket was glossy instead of matte textured and it'll definitely need a cover. I find the two color printing a little distracting, but I do like the layout and design elements. Overall - I'm glad I jumped on it.

Hmmm...this was listed as a softcover on Abebooks so I was surprised to get a hardcover in the mail. This was the only one with this style listed that way. Would I be correct to assume this look was never used for a softcover?

Some sellers don't know what they have. Often they are buying from another seller and passing it on to you.

That style was only available in a hardcover. Goodreads is pretty good with various editions. (https://www.goodreads.com/work/editions/1590722-insomnia)

Got some slipcases from Jeff Whiley today...really happy with the fit.....

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/924/medium/IMG_5840.jpg

If you guys want to order these cases....contact Jeff Whiley...here is the information:

For US 1st of Cell tell him: Case for a book that is 242mm x 35mm x 164mm. STEPHEN KING on the side in Black (no box). White Ecorel.

For US 1st of Black House tell him: Case for a book is 242mm x 48mm x 164mm. STEPHEN KING on the side in Silver (no box). Black Ecorel.

For US 1st of The Green Mile tell him: Case for a book that is 242mm x 37mm x 164mm. STEPHEN KING running up the side in Green. White Ecorel. Didn't notice this until I took the pics today, there is a note on the back of the Prom invitation (front not pictured). Was this done on all 26 copies?

It's not the greatest workmanship and might fall apart if you actually tried to read it lol. The paper is really thin also.

In case this is an actual concern for anyone, FWIW: I've personally read (cover to cover) not one, but two, thin-paper, thousand-plus-page Barnes & Noble special editions (Poe and Lovecraft collections) and they held up fine. Some of the silver ink on the spine of the Poe did wear off (which actually is a cool touch, to my eyes), but the pages were undamaged.

I was going to make a new thread, but decided just to ask in here instead.

When handling valuable books and you don't want to expose them to finger prints and other things, what kind of gloves do you use? Silk type gloves or something similar?

Illustrative art rarely produces images like this one. It certainly deserves the accolade of ‘Iconic’.
It had to be either Tim or you, so huge congratulations Kris.
They do not come any better.
(Don’t leave it in the shipping crate)!!
