This one just came in today, I picked it up via Subterranean Press. 600+ pages, 65 color plates, a centerfold, art, letters, covers, and holy hell look at those endpapers! If you're an Edgar Rice Burroughs fan and interested in the history of EVERYTHING he ever wrote then this is the book for you, I highly recommend it.

I've had things delivered by Fedex, UPS and the good ol' USPS in the last couple of weeks, and all three were delayed by a couple of days - and routed very oddly. I think courier services are struggling to keep up with demand with only skeleton crews on duty.

So for 2 days FedEx tracking shows my package in Fairfield Ca (40 miles from me) with no known delivery date. Usually at my house there is almost always someone at home. As luck would have it, I went to the hardware store and was gone 1 hour. Naturally when I get home, there is a notice from FedEx of am attempted delivery. Oh well, they will make an attempt tomorrow (and I'm not leaving).

If you're a completist then get the bundle from DRP. I have no idea what their edition of The Woman will contain but I'm sure it'll be a good looking set. No matter what, I'd recommend getting Offsrping from DRP. I think Offspring is even better than Off Season.

Definitely one of the most interesting books I own now. The walnut paper looks and feels amazing in real life and is the perfect aesthetic for the story.

This will probably be my last pick-up for a while (although I am still waiting on some pre-orders). Apparently we have to feed the kids this month.

It really is. Even the new forward was great, and that's not something I always care about or even notice.

Stay fed and healthy.

Of course. The worst thing about kids is having to feed them all the time. The best thing is that if you run out of other food, they're right there. And well fed. And pretty easy to catch with their short little legs…

I already know I’m probably going to get roasted but frankly it doesn’t matter. On one hand, congrats for knowing what was presented at an, honestly, ignorant price. Not a “steal” price, not a “deal” price. But an ignorant price. In this collecting world I think one upping one another has trumped all sense of honesty and integrity. Call me a prude, call me Debbie downer I don’t care. Here’s a guy, offering a 15-18 thousand dollar book for 3.5k and we just willingly accept someone for a great deal, or a good find? Personally it disturbs me. There’s no possible situation in which I would come to know this information and not tell the person. So my question is: was there an attempt to inform this guy of what he had? If not, and if you would take this without informing the guy I seriously question what the collecting world has become. Come what may, I had to speak my peace about this.

I’m sorry my opinion doesn’t match up with your fans on Facebook Kris. I’m just the only one that’s going to post what I think and not worry about what others say. I knew you would call me something (negative) or joke about me doing the right thing. At the end of the day I’m not the one posting publicly about my economic troubles, saying you are going to lose everything you own, then buying a 4,000 dollar book. You literally own 19 Michael whelan works, and then talk about how you have no money. Better yet blasting bookstore employees and calling them “ignorant assholes” when they don’t refund you 35 bucks in what you think is a timely fashion. While I would say at least I can sleep with myself at night, I’m sure you’ll sleep just fine too. I’ve said my peace, and I won’t derail this thread further.

Just so everyone is clear on what my “behind the scenes stunt” was. Someone was thinking about selling their collection. I publicly posted on the thread that I thought the person should keep their collection if at all possible. I privately messaged the person telling them that I believed Kris’ market valuations were off base and that if he needed help and there were items he wanted to sell, I would buy them and hold them for him. If he ever wanted the books back he could have them for whatever price he sold them to me for. Nothing more nothing less. Well I guess he didn’t like that and told Kris and I got called a Snake for it.

Anyway - the thread de-railed enough. Back on topic at this point.

I never said I would lose everything. I lost my job even Covid hit. It was upsetting and I had to get EI. Hopefully your ok And didn’t have any fears while this is going on. I’m now back to work although not full time. Thanks for your concern. And I sell books to feed my habit Nick. Hence how I afforded this book. And the people were ignorant and rude at the bookstore to more than just me. It was discussed by many that did not live in the US. This book was listed forever... with an asking price. Simple as that. OH, One thing is for sure... I’m not gonna bring up your behind the scenes stunts you attempted to pull and got caught on. Oh and I have more than 19 Whelan’s:). Like I said, you have a great night.

This is not entirely true Nick. But again, I’ll leave what really happened..... and that was so good of you “to offer to hold his collection for him during these tough times”. Your a saint!

I get your point about picking the guy off and getting a book for far lower than it’s worth. But It’s not like Kris pulled a scam on him. It’s not like he convinced the guy it was an inferior book or defective or anything. It’s not like he caught a poor guy in a desperate situation. Kris simply bought it for what the guy was asking. And also consider that the seller was selling it for a price he thought was fair, a price he was happy selling it for, even lowering it to get the product gone. I doubt the seller had $18000 invested in the book. So no one was ripped off. The seller just sold it for what it was worth to him. And that happened to be the deal of a lifetime.

I get what you are saying in principle. But it’s not like someone was selling a signed limited of insomnia for 150 bucks vs 300. By using superior knowledge of the item, and not disclosing the information you know to be true, is just as bad as ripping someone off IMO. If the price would have been say, 10,000 then yeah, I’d say great deal as it was 2 k under the issue price. But the fact that, not only did he know the books true value, he didn’t say squat and let the seller believe he sold it for FMV. What if this dude sold it because he couldn’t make ends meet? I know if I was on hard times and had to sell a beloved possession I’d want it’s full value. For me and, judging from all the pos rep I received, some others this was extremely tactless.

It was listed on abe forever for that price, so it was not sold in dire need for cash in this troubled times. Also the seller could have investigate what he had and he apparently didn't. Kris simply paid was the seller was asking and the seller was probably happy he sold the book. I see no harm in what was done here...

Some of you might know I also collect movie posters. I've found a particular love of both Australian Daybills (they're long thin posters, 13" x 30") and old Kirk Douglas movies ... Spartacus, Lonely are the Brave, Paths of Glory, Lust for Life, etc.

Today arrived a P & J that fits both those bills, a 1957 original Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. This particular one is pretty rare and often goes for big bucks; I caught it at a Heritage auction where it was paired with a second different GATOKC poster which was a repro from the 1970's. They were described correctly (1957/R-1970's), but maybe folks were confused. It sure worked out for me, as this is some of my favorite poster artwork, and absolutely the best one for Kirk Douglas, I think, as Doc Holliday.

I understand both sides of the coin, but if I saw a high-end King book at a yard sale (a 1st edition Carrie, a signed book, etc.) that was selling way below its true value, I can't say with 100% honesty that I'd let the owner know what they had.

Maybe I missed something - but how did the seller get the book in the first place without knowing what it was or was worth? Sounds strange to me. It's specialty and fairly new - not like someone with a bunch of old books that don't know they might be worth something.

Right. I'm not heartless, but the onus is on the seller to know what they are selling. In any case, the seller is telling buyers what they want for the item--not necessarily what it's worth. They have a number in mind that they'll be happy to get and that number might be created in ignorance, but if they're happy to get it and they get it, then they'll think it's a win. It's different than someone like me asking this forum "Hey I got this signed Shining with a 1/x in it--anyone know what it's worth?" and then getting a private message telling me "it's worth $4k and I'll buy it!" That would be directly misleading and underhanded if the messenger knows its true worth.

I research everything I want to sell. Sometimes I do a lot of research if I think I have something worth the extra effort. But sometimes I just want to unload it.

Not knowing the seller, I don't know what his situation is. But if he immediately dropped the price, then he wanted it gone. I wouldn't throw the penalty flag on this one.

He had it on ABE for a LONG time. No one looked at as there was no pictures and it stated Gift Edition in the title... many books are overpriced there. He is a book seller that has no store but sells books on ABE and has TONS of listings. Like 1000’s. Im assuming he bought that book not long after King gifted it (inscription is dated in 2014) from whoever Bill is. He paid a price and I am sure he made money. Plus after so long sitting on the book he was really happy to sell it as happy as I was to receive it.

PS: I thank the members here that sent positive rep. Said positive comments and sent messages. I am very happy even though some (well one) tried to ruin that.

I agree with Jeff on this one. I had the same thoughts in my head. Even when I was just starting out, I tried to figure what something was worth to make sure I was not getting ripped off. In this case, IMHO, It's not the fault of Kris that the guy had the price so low. If you are in this line of "work", selling books and buying books, it's up to you to to figure out what something should cost. If I am a seller, and I have something that looks unique, or even not so unique, and I sell it for a price that is way lower than it should be, that's my fault, not the buyers fault. The buyer just ended up getting a great deal. If your are a seller, the onus is on you to do your research to figure out what the price should be, not me. Just my thoughts. Feel free to flame away. I tried to organize them the best I could.

Isn't book collecting fun?

Sometimes you get a good deal. Sometimes you don't.

An honest transaction doesn't create a moral dilemma.

Kris, you made quite a find! You have a nearly priceless book and realized an increased value of ~4.7 times the purchase price! Nice!

I bought a proof that was listed as a paperback. It cost ~$12 shipped. I traded the proof for a book that was worth ~$250. That is a return of 21 times the original purchase price. Smaller potatoes, but still very exciting!

Strange that an ostensible promoter of markets decries the secondary book market. :orely:

I need to weigh in because something(s) just don't jibe for me. But before I piss everyone off, let me sleep on this before I write anything. But just to give you all a hint at where I'll be going, I want to share that within the last year I had an opportunity to buy a signed Doubleday proof. The seller was aware that it was rare but he underpriced the item. He just wanted to recoup his money and asked for $4.8K. I told him that that number was too low and I told him I'd pay $6K because that was more in line with its real value.

And I never cease to be amazed at the hypocritical sentiments when the situation is reversed. Remember when David sold the "Salem's Lot Printer's Copies at a ridiculously low price because he hadn't noticed that they were signed by King? David repriced the items AFTER he was told that the books were signed. He admitted that he made a silly mistake but knew that people would understand when he increased the price. But that same generosity doesn't seem to be available to the seller of The Shining. Do you think that person would seriously want $3.5K when the real value is at least $9K higher?

I would have never bought that book without telling the seller the complete backstory. And I sure as hell would blast to the world what a great deal befell my way. I'm sure I've pissed off enough people by now so I'll stop for tonight. But I'll return in the morning to take the incoming as well as state what really doesn't jibe for me.

The Bookstore1 comparison doesn't hold. Bookstore1 surely knew the books were worth far more than issue price, but they couldn't charge fair market value, they were precluded from that and were happy to just sell ~250 books that were (TTBOMK) donated at $30 each and thus gross $7,500 in sales.

Bad comparison. Thrift shops, Goodwill stores, etc. don’t do any due diligence when they get items to sell. They’re not in business to make massive profits.

I don't care if I pay $30 or $300 for something....I would like it to arrive undamaged

Had they charged a $15 shipping and handling fee (instead of $5)...and included a box, foam peanuts, and a little common sense, they would have still sold out in one day.

The result is more profit for the book store....and a lot less unhappy customers.

I believe that is what they call in business a "win-win".

My take... I paid $30 for a signed King book (which I am still waiting to be delivered, but I digress). Even if that book has a bumped corner or two, it’s going to end up in a slipcase, put on my shelf, and I will eventually forget about any flaws. In the end, I still paid an unreal $30 for a signed King book!

Well, I thought the idea was to drum up new costumers for these small bookstores. If you want customer loyalty you should handle the merchandise with care. For me it wouldn't matter if it was signed or not, I would only be a repeat customer with them if they were cheaper then other sites, and was willing to except the risks.

For comparison, I received my signed Grisham from a bookstore in VA yesterday. They shipped it via UPS Monday and it came yesterday. Though it was in the same padded envelope as If It Bleeds, the bookstore reinforced it with cardboard, rubber bands, and put extra paper inside for padding.

Good morning (not anymore). I slept well...but not long enough. I’m sorry this is later than I promised. It was difficult to write while researching and balancing work-related issues. To those who PMed me, I will respond in kind.

I hope that the moderators would move this discussion to the Random Thoughts thread because it does take away from the fact that Kris Webster is, to my knowledge, 1 of only 9 people in the world with this SK book. And probably 1 of only 5 true "collector-first" owners. For that, I congratulate you, Kris. The inscription is superb, too! It’s unfortunate that you took the pictures off site.

I hinted at my feelings of the acquisition last night. I'll expand on that in a bit. I mentioned that some things just did not jibe for me. Here is a big one. It was stated that this book had been on ABE for the longest time. It is very possible that that was what was said to Kris, but I can't believe it. I have been searching ABE and many other locations for another Fine/Fine signed copy of The Shining (US) for at least the last 4 years. I routinely aggregate and sort my searches from highest-to-lowest price knowing that a copy will not be cheap. So, unless my vision suddenly morphed into Stevie Wonder's or the late Helen Keller's, I never saw an advertisement for this singular book on ABE. Weekly, at worst. Bob Jackson combs through ABE looking for gems, as do many other collectors. Did we collectively miss this? While he or I or anyone may have balked at a $4K price for The Shining prior to last May, the floodgates opened up when Tony and Kim purchased the 6 books from Sub Press and then sold 4 of them for $12.5K cash. Since last May, the market dictated the bottom price of this book to be ~$12.5K. Had I seen it within the last 12 months, you damned sure know that I would have contacted the seller to find out what's up with the book because it is priced so far below the recent sales price. So, I have reservations about the claim (made by the seller implicitly or explicitly) that this has been on ABE for a long time.

The second thing that I question is that the seller has sold 1,000s of books so he should have automatically known the rarity of the book. While it may be true that he sold 1,000s of books, the implication is that he sold 1,000s of SK books. If the latter is true, the seller would be akin to Stu or David from Betts Books or a Lloyd Currey/John Knott. But I certainly did not see any seller of SK prominence selling high-end signed copies of The Shining on ABE over the last year – or the last few years for that matter. But, if the seller was just an occasional SK seller and a seller of many other authors or genres, I agree that the 1,000s-books-sold statement could be accurate. And, if that’s the case, I could easily envision a scenario where such a seller described above would not have been privy to the Camelot/Sub Press sale or the follow-on $12.5K sales in the way most of us are.

The next thing I didn’t understand was how the inscription date (2014) implied that this book has been on sale for numerous years, as was intimated earlier in the thread above. How would that date in-and-of-itself prove how long that the book has been on ABE? My GUESS is that Bill Schafer gifted #s I-IV to SK-related people for their pleasure/use/disposal, etc. King inscribed # I and re-gifted the book to Bill Schafer after the inscription thanking him for all of the support over the years and for the future proceeds of The Shining auctions going to The Haven Foundation. I have no guess where it went after that or why it went anywhere, for that matter.

My opinion on this is clear and it is consistent with the way I deal with people always. This is MY opinion only.

I congratulate you, Kris, for obtaining an outstanding book! Rejoice that you own a book that few will ever touch. But it was a private transaction and it should have stayed private until/unless the seller wanted to share the details. Please don’t tell the world that you got the deal of a lifetime, though, because no sane person in this day and time would eschew $9K if he/she had all the facts in front of them. It may not be your or my responsibility to educate everyone, every time. But I would hope that, as a fellow human being, you would educate me if I did not have all the facts needed to make an informed decision, as I would for you.

John

John

Hey John, for sure I can share the info I know. First, allow me to respond to your first post. You mentioned David.... I immediately bought that book (Salems Lot) when listed. I had known from the FB group that some were signed. I then asked David (in the same email asking to buy it for $950) if it was a signed one or not. He got back to me and said it was signed and the price would change. David is my friend and I owe him a lot. I do not know this seller... For all I know he could be ripping me off. He asked me for F&F when I made him an offer on the first book. I made a leap... paying for both books and having to use a CC for some so I was scared. REAL scared but risk VS reward was my thought process.....and it turned out ok. I respect your opinion (because done respectively) and will respond to all info I have for you and others. The seller has a store on there with A LARGE amount of titles. I mean WOW.. there is a lot. 1000's. He does NOT just sell King. In fact, he hardly had much to look at. I asked him where the book came from and he told me he couldn't recall which led me to believe he had it for some time. I asked if it was Bill from Subpress and he said that is not where he got it but couldn't remember the last guys name. His ad (seen by other members in the past as they were shocked that I got it and what it was) was labeled horribly. I passed over it as it looked like a signed gift edition for an outrageous sum but I asked for pics.... why the hell not right? I mean the title of his ad flat out said "The Shining Gift Edition".. that is it and maybe Subpress's name as the maker... but nothing more in the title. Just that and a crazy price. Clicking on it brought a bit more info.. but not much other than it was signed and leather bound. Before I had gotten the pics, he said he would do a deal on that as I bought another signed title from him. The funny thing is... he wanted over value for that first title and I overpaid a bit to get it.... I will keep that to myself as this whole thing has sucked a bit of the fun and excitement out of this for me. I won't lie. I digress.... I can ask him how long it has been in his possession and get a good idea of date. Someone that sells the vast amount he does... is surely not shady in anyway. I cannot see it. He was nothing but a gent to deal with. I trusted him enough to pay him a LOT of $ with no protection. Again, it turned out ok. I also will not share our correspondence publicly BUT have no issues showing you in private John. No issues at all if you so desire. Send me a PM if you would like...

I can only guess he didn't know what he had. Maybe he did and just wanted a respectable profit and no more. I ask why he didnt have pics of that but a common Outsider he did. I am sure he bought this title for X amount and sold it making himself some profit. He would have on both titles that I got off him. He was happy. I was happy. You also mention the inscription date.... about 6/7 years ago. I cannot guess the back story. Your thoughts are prob bang on....I mean we had NO idea about these until the Camelot announcement. Whether he meant he had it for years, or the guy he got it from did... I cannot say for sure. I asked him some more info today and it was basically what I already gleamed from him.

The majority seem to be ok with getting this deal. In fact, showed genuine happiness for me. If I hadn't said "sure send the pics".... someone in time would have and it may have been someone else showing this. Maybe even someone that isn't going to treasure it like I am. My biggest folly here (I think) was sharing the story. My excitement and passion for this collecting thing sometimes gets the better of me and I wanted to share with my King friends who share this EXACT passion. What is more exciting than this find and the deal that was had? That was (for me) my only mistake. I do not regret buying the book the way it did. I didn't do anything underhanded. I simple bought something put in front of me. You hear stories all the time of people paying "too much" for something. BUT if they are happy, the seller is happy.... I just cannot see the harm. Many of us have overpaid VFB for titles. They paid and were happy. Is that not what matters?

Lastly, He has over 10000 books on ABE. No Shit. Who's job is it to tell him what everyone is worth? I don't know him. I have no connection to him other than this one transaction. Like David, YOU are my friend. And I would tell you what you had... just like you did to the proof guy. I would tell anyone that was in the community and/or was a pal. Stephen King collectors are like family and I come to share big things in my life (loss of job, my puppy sick, a mass murder in my home town, etc) because the majority of you care. Some do not, and thats ok, you cannot be friends with everyone, although I sometimes wonder why not here... we ALL LOVE THE SAME THING. I hope this info helps your understanding of this and thanks again to you (and others) for the kind words. I have not stopped holding it and staring at it... I never. EVER.... thought I would own a copy. Cheers to everyone here, kris

As a relative newcomer to this community after lurking all I can offer is that it might appear to some people that your "humble" brags Kris come across more as look at me I need attention and I'm better than you brags. It's a matter of perception perhaps. It might not be what you mean but to some it might come across that way. It might just be your excitement of the hobby sometimes gets lost in translation. I'm not in the high end, rare King collector circles, hell I'm not in the know enough to snag the signed If It Bleeds, and I enjoy seeing books I'll never see in person. That said, sometimes some of the collectors here seem to get a little superiority complex from time to time.

EXACTLY.....I do not have my book yet either but this is exactly what I plan to do.

I DID finally get my book today (opened in garage as I quarantine all mail for 24 hours)...it came only in a padded mailer....a bumped corner...I'd rate my copy NF+/NF+

Kris,

Thanks for your post above, your purchase unsettled me because of the sheer size of the saving made due to sellers error, and it’s not my business, but (you) being a major player in this community, are very visible and shapes a lot of activity here, and however you dress it, $12,000 mismatch, to most is a massive amount of money. Great saving, great loss.

And my point is, your actions are very much in the public, and most have the same view as you, so all good I suppose.

My questions were mainly answered above, but I have a couple if ok, respectably asked is my intention.

I think you answered the question above but I was going to ask, if it were a seller here, would you have still made the deal?

How would you feel if, in the very unlikely event you sold a book undervalued by $12k how would you feel?

Last one for me, I think you answered above but, you are still in contact with the guy, all friendly by the sound of it, but are you looking for further bargains from him?

Again respectably asked and you don’t need to answer if you don’t want to.

I love the book itself, it’s amazing.

I recieved something I was looking for YEARS and never expected to find. Because it's an obscure fanzine type / publications, and because there are only 5 copies of it.

What is it?
Nothing fancy : in the 90s, a french guy created some bootleg copies of some books, only in an handful copies for his friend.
He made literally photocopies of the french publications of The Gunslinger in the french equivalent of the mag of Science Fiction and put them together.
There are only 5 copies, and I know of another copy in the hands of my friend, which told me about it about 15 years ago.

Oh, and I got it at a reasonable price.
Last year, I once had an alert about it, twice as expensive. Contacted the seller, which apologised cause told me he didnt have it anymore since YEARS and abebooks had a technical glitch showing for sale hundreds if not thousands of products that were sold years ago.

Long story short.
I accidentallly came accross those last week, jumped on it. Waited impatiently the seller to confirm the sale, sending it and I was expecting it to get lost during shipping.

But finally... voila !

I know that those are not speaking to many people, but in my opinion it's in par with rare obscure fanzines. Although this time, there are (supposedly) only 5 copies.
The guy has made an actual "Pirates" series of "books" like this, "for his friends", so it's not just a one off and I guess that I like it as a french "completist".
But it's definitely not an official release.

At the signing, King read his short story LT's Theory of Pets. If you're not familiar with it, it involves a married couple and their dog and cat. So when it was my turn to get my book signed I asked King:
"So are you a dog person or a cat person?"
He answered: "Well, I started out as a cat person, but I became a dog person. Kinda like changing sexuality."
I loved it.

Other things arrived as well, one of which I've been searching for a long time and while I arrived to late to Jonathan's copy, the sticker on top gave me a hint on how to search for it:

I bought the Joyland S/L when it first came out but didn't realize until recently how much it's gone up in value, so I figured I ought to get a slipcase while they're still available. It came today:

So this is how a lettered looks like... :)

WOW. WOOOOWWW!

Yesterday I received this prize. I must say I was expecting something beautiful but my estimations were short. It's one of the nicest books I ever saw. Congratulations, Brian! It's an incredible edition!

Thank you!!

Missing the Joyland S/L is one of the biggest regrets of my collecting life. I was on vacation when it was available for order and I didn't find out about it until they were gone.

Yeah, mine is six days late, and not coming today or tomorrow according to USPS tracking.

When you get yours in Chicago, mine should likely arrive the following day.

Got mine yesterday. You get yours?

Since you asked, I’ll share this one. You’ve already seen it, Bryan.

This is one of my more sentimental books. It’s not fancy, or expensive or rare. It was the first signed book I ever owned, purchased by my folks when I was a kid. I loved this book, and read it many times over. But growing up, it ended up lost in a move or some such.

When I got into collecting, I reached out in hopes of getting a new signed copy. The author was great to talk to, and very accommodating. I sent a check for $13 and here we have one of my pride and joys. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200524/fd3fe84dc642bef69474a4e3158cf169.jpg
