So, here is my latest. I was lucky enough to meet Bernie the summer before he died, at Boston Comic Con. I was also lucky enough to purchase the remaining Stephen King related prelim drawings he had that day. I have sold them all off in the past two months, all except this beauty from Wolves of the Calla. I could never find just the right frame for it and so it lay dormant for way too long. Then I found a guy on Etsy who was selling frames with bullets built into the frame. I loved it, and after some back and forth I commissioned him to make this frame, which I hope you agree is fitting for a Gunslinger. This is one of my best. Sorry Kris, I know you wanted this one.

Nothing too fancy, but I'm REALLY happy that I found a copy of Dreamworks. And the newspaper. And Shivers 8 proof. And more E. Weekly magazines with King writings in 'em. :)

And I got three more prints from Suntup. I can't even begin to explain how I admire these pieces. Now I have 9 of the prints released. :)

I for one agree with Ben on this... I understand buying the exact same book two (or three, four, five, etc.) times whenever you find a slightly more pristine copy, to get it as close to perfect as possible. I can even understand collecting different versions of the same book (like, say, this edition of Pet Semetary, in addition to the US 1st/1st and the PS Anniversary Edition).

What I don’t get is collecting multiple copies of the exact same book. It’s even worse when the book is a limited edition. If someone is holding on to two or more copies of a limited edition book, that just means one or more collectors who might really want one are deprived of their chance of owning one.

Speaking for myself, I get rid of the previous copy of a book whenever I find a better version. For example, I upgraded my paperback copy of Eyes of the Dragon to a US 1st/1st not too long ago (thanks Biomieg!) but last week I bought a Philtrum Press S/L (thanks Frik!), so the hardback is out of the collection again.

However...

a) I know a lot of you do collect multiple copies of the same title. It is not my intention to open up a can of worms or cause offence. I’m only trying to understand a part of the collecting mindset that’s alien to me. To each their own.
b) This might not be the right place for this discussion, if that’s what it turns into.
c) If this has been discussed before on the forum, please point me in the right direction. I’d love to read people’s thoughts and personal collecting philosophies.

I don't know if anyone here watches the show Billions, but on that, one character (Bobby), upon learning that his nemesis (Chuck) had pawned his prized signed (by Churchill himself) set of The Second World War with an understanding that he could buy it back in a matter of days, not only bought that copy before Chuck could get it back, but sought out and bought all such signed sets he could locate (I am pleased to say that I've handled such a set, although the set I actually own (though beautiful) is unsigned) so that when his Chuck's cash problems abated, he would have no options. That always gave me like three types of heartburn. Ruin your enemy if you must, but be enough of a gentleman to leave books (particularly historical and/or collectible ones) out of it.

I mean, what would you rather have happen:

1) someone buys up all copies of Centipede's Salem's Lot and destroys them, just because he can, or

2) it turns out Barlow is actually real and kills you, while leaving the full Centipede run, untouched

Books are important.

That's what I did with some books. I didn't have infinite space and I'll always go with a book that looks "better" to me. My The Shining, Night Shift, The Stand, 'Salem's Lot were all signed firsts too. I have absolutely zero regrets.

Interesting approach. Didn't know collectors did that. I think the most important thing is to have some kind of guidelines for your collection if you do not have a huge amount of funds. That is definitely a way of doing that. I admittedly have occasional trouble sticking to my own guidelines Damn it! Ha.

Indeed. If you gave me a choice between a set of six first editions of the Doubleday books in fine condition or the Cemetery Dance gift editions of the same, I'd take the latter - even if the first editions were signed.

Monetary value aside, the modern releases are just better, more beautiful and more desirable books to me, with their slipcases, oversized dimensions, illustrations, fine bindings and paper quality.

Perhaps mine is its own kind of madness...

Do they have to be from the original print runs or could they be the later "re-issued" Doubleday versions that have a stronger binding but otherwise look the same as a first edition? Those would be much more affordable and look exactly the same as the first editions.

I am looking for first ed of these. It's just the way I started with Christine and I kept on going that way. I know they won't be cheap. But I really only need Salems' Lot 2nd state and if I am lucky a Nightshift. What I also need is a First ed DJ for my Carrie. My Carrie is flat signed but the Double Day on the spine is missing the "D". So I would like to fix that. My Nightshift is a library copy but it's inscribed with a neat inscription. So, I will try and work on the ones I need.

Very interesting and varied approaches. I agree that one of the first things you need to establish is a set of rules and/or guidelines that apply to your collection and preferences. I collect 1/1 U.S and U.K. editions first and foremost. Like you guys, at first I revolved copies based on condition until I was happy with what I deemed a final copy. Those 1/1 editions with their original DJ and non-clipped price are my primary treasures. As a rule I don't mess very much with reissues unless its for a number/signature. For example I have a CD S/L of "IT".

Once the original first edition (US&UK) has been collected to my satisfaction, I'll look to what I refer to as "upgrades" such as a flat signed 1/1, Flat signed & remarqued and/or a gift or S/L edition. Depending on condition (and sometimes where I personally rate the book) I may replace a standard 1/1 with a flat or inscribed copy. I don't buy into the "which is the TRUE first edition" debate. If I'm fond of a particular book or admire the production I'll look to add an "upgrade" like a gift or S/L edition. I'm a fan of remarques and have had the ability to kind of go to town with that as a result of my efforts with fund raising in the past. So generally speaking I tend to have only two copies of a title, but may have additional S/L or gift editions as well.

I also like to collect the odd edition or quirky promotional item, etc. For instance I have the Bag of Bones phonograph and DVD, A Christine car and other things of such a nature. That stuff I buy as it strikes my fancy. No particular set of guidelines other than I don't like to get started on something that should be a "set" and not complete it. If you know what I mean. Over the years I've managed to amass quite a bit of cool and personalized memorabilia that I'm pretty proud and happy with.

So, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Hope that help a bit and if you've got any questions please feel free to shout it out. PEACE!!!! lol

Edit: Oh, yeah I'm also a big fan of slipcases especially, for signed or remarqued books. I've got "Thecollector", Dolso, Jeff Whiley and CD slip/tray cases. Wooden and cardboard. Mostly after market cases unless its part of the edition.

I don't generally collect King-related art, but the majority of the art in my home office is book-related so when I do pick up the rare King piece, it's a nice fit.

So far I have purchased two of the fine Giclee prints from Suntup Editions: the first was the paperback version of The Shining, and this is the second.

This is my very favorite King-related piece of art, and one of my favorite works of art overall, so I was positively delighted when this was released. I'd love someday to own the original; I believe that it's in the supercollection of a former member here (I thought I saw it in a video but I could be mistaken) so it's unlikely to make its way to me, but one can hope

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/984/medium/IMG_8925.jpg

I realized a couple of years ago that the choice of frame can make a big difference, and if you can spring it, having pieces custom framed can really add an extra dimension to a nice piece. In this case, I chose a simple reddish-brown frame and a plain off-white mat. You can't quite tell from the picture but the frame pulls out the warm colors from the print, and it makes the blood trickle "pop" a little bit (here's a link to a larger size that I can't embed - http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/showfull.php?photo=25155).

I'm happy to own one of these, and even happier with the framed result. This weekend I'm going to put it on the wall right above my monitors, so I can look at it every day :)

My holy grail arrived today. This also completes my blank DT set (DTI-VII + LSOE + WTTKH).

This copy didn’t come with a slipcase. It also appears to be a misprint in that pages 17,20,21,24,25,28,29,32,33,36,37,40,41,43,45, and 48, have no text or no printing on them.

That's super cool! Can't believe that you managed to find a full blank set... Also I think it's neat that it's a misprint. I wonder how on earth that happened given the production process. How could one set of books have the misprint?? Unless there were more, but they all got caught except this one...

Very, very neat! Big congrats~~~!!!

~1,500 Copies of The Gunslinger were misbound. A few "leaked" out, and more than one S/L was stolen during the binding/shipping of the book.

That's crazy!!

So this was:

(1) one of ~1500 misbound copies
(2) of an unknown number (certainly less than 1500) that "leaked" out
(3) and also made it into the S/L run with the added signature page
(4) and was signed but the designation left blank

I would bet good money that this is the only book that shares all of these characteristics!

Amazing :o:o:o

Your 4 probabilities are more likely than not.

You left out the possibility it was stolen. IMO, less likely than the 4 other points.

I am not intimating that it was stolen, only that that is a possibility. Regardless, it's a VERY unique book.

A little "fun" story to share....

One of my latest smaller consignments at Betts is from a gentleman who worked for a publisher, Hamilton Press, which was the publisher for Grant's DT II, III and IV...He told me that Grant used another publisher (not named by him) for Gunslinger but at the time Gunslinger came out, Don Grant was at a tag sale in his area and the person there had a whole box of new 1st edition Gunslingers on a table and was selling them. Person at sale told Don that he box came from the printers (must have been taken by an employee) and that was the last time Don used that printer...Don chose Hamilton Press...that is how the DT books came to Hamilton...because of a tag sale! True story!

A similar thing happened to SubPress at one point. They were sending numbered/lettered copies with manufacturing defects to a company to be disposed of, and someone at the disposal company was selling them on eBay instead. These copies were often signed, but lacked a number/letter, slipcase or traycase, and often lacked a dustjacket. SubPress put a stop to it after they discovered what was going on.

I could well believe this Gunslinger copy should have been destroyed, but was sold instead.

Ha, I missed that Sub Press story, but apparently all of us who have been around long enough have one along these lines...!

Mine involves an employee from a printer stealing books to trade for small amounts of cash at a local bookstore, who then put them up on eBay. One day, an alert CD customer noticed several of our titles (without slipcases OR numbers) suddenly pop-up on eBay before we even had them in our warehouse. They were still being packed at the PRINTER.

I contacted our printer, since there was literally only one explanation, and they freaked out because, again, there was only one explanation, and they started an investigation. The company's CEO called me the next day, their state's state police got involved... And the employee was caught and it ended up being a fairly big deal. The arrangement between the employee and the bookstore had been going on for years, from what I understand, and they were done in by a watchful book collector noticing an un-numbered Limited Edition book showing up on eBay too early!

Bit of a tangent but none of my local friends seem to appreciate the sheer shitheadedness of the douchenozzles involved in this. I knew all of these guys involved and the ones that worked at Caliban books were always total pricks to me. Sometimes karma is a beautiful thing.

Anyway it’s not detailed in this particular article, but I know it’ll make you all cringe to know this. They stole very very rare books from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and then took them to Caliban to be sold. Some of the larger books...they stole by ripping out 1 page at a time for more discreet transport. Oh the humanity

Congrats!!!! BIG aquisition here!!

Such a beautiful book.

I'm sure most people here know, but for those who don't: Charnel House is the designer and publisher of the famed lettered edition of The Regulators.

This book came out 4 years before The Regulators and I believe that it won a book design award, though I can't remember which one and Google isn't being particularly helpful right now. It's the first book by Charnel House to have something embedded in the boards (well, maybe the second if you count Ray Garton's The New Neighbor which had a section of the boards covered with garter material). The Regulators was the second/third.

Joe Stefko (the proprietor) was one of the first publishers to really experiment with embedding interesting materials into the front boards. This book has a tarot card and two actually-used poker chips from a casino prominent in the book embedded in the wonderful green Morocco leather.

The endpapers are from sheets of uncut $1 bills and the signature page is made from a sheet of uncut $2 bills.

It's a groundbreaking masterpiece.

It’s actually not folded - it’s a cut $2 bill and it was in the book as a bookmark - not pasted in (it’s loose). Having never seen other pics of it before I presume it was originally placed as a bookmark. I have a few crisp $2 bills - now I know where I can store them...

So far I can add Carrie and The Shining to the list. Salem's Lot looks to be a little trickier to find in my budget, but that's ok.

I recently completed my search to acquire those Doubleday gift editions. I had an ebay search set up that I frequently checked. For both The Shining and Salem's Lot, I found a new listing within hours of it being posted, and scored them for probably about 50% under market value. Just gotta keep scouring ebay for those deals.

I got an incredible deal for Lisbonian 1964 (35 dls). The sad story is that I had the chance of buying Lisbon high yearbooks of 1963 and 1965 as well, and didn't pull the trigger (King is present in both of them). If you checked ebay, there were two that decided to pull the trigger I didn't...

I also jumped the fence and got Lisbonian 1962. It's the year SK started his studies there. In the freshmen pic, there's one I'm trying to confirm if it's King or not (I contacted Marsha about it). What do you think?

I thought I would share this. Being my 19th piece it seems fitting... as everyone knows I’m a nut for Michael Whelan’s work. I probably will never stop collecting him but that magic number... well why not share them with you all? I’ll call it “The Webster Collection” haha. His work is so good I could go on and on but I’ll just let you enjoy. Here are my 19 Whelan original pieces.

Meaning the very first pic? It was Whelans original choice for the cover for DT7. He abandoned it half way through and did another cover prelim (which I have above as well) then did what we have on the book now. He told me about this piece back in February and then finished it for me upon my request. It was near done anyways. It’s beautiful and Audrey Inset it in a frame to look like your peering through a window. It’s unreal
