I feel a little...inadequate posting this, after seeing so many amazing editions - but, what the hell, I'm very happy with it.
Couldn't believe how good the condition is, even though it was listed as fine/fine. The d/j is what I'd consider 'mint'. The book itself may have been read once, but I doubt it. A couple of light smudges on the top page edges. The price was so low that I was very concerned, until I received and opened the box.

I still prefer Bob's copy that Steve signed with a french "translation" of his name : Etienne Roi, if I remember correctly.

It is a good one for sure. But the thing about Bruce's copy is that it is signed by Adrienne Barbeau also. You guys are going on and on about Leslie Nielson (and rightly so) but I'm still drooling over Adrienne (in Swamp Thing and others).

Trying to post a pic of the French sig but photobucket absolutely sucks today! Okay, here it is.

So far, that's my favorite CREEPSHOW copy ever, but yes, the copy signed by the cast is pretty good too !

[QUOTE=CurtSeattle;977365]I believe CREEPSHOW is a MUST HAVE for any real King collector.

IS ES a must have for a real King Collector? I dont like ES. I like IT. I am intrigued, but after owning and selling a few foreign editions i just don't want ES.

A real King Collector must have Creepshow. Check! now i need it signed.

A real King Collector must have what else?
The jacket king wore on the cover of Carrie? Darn, Cardosweiller already owns that.
The first Galley Proof of Carrie? Lot Guy owns that.
Stephen Kings Used Car? Explorer has that

Maybe i should start out with a new author... and then i stand a chance of owning their clothes, cars, arcs... etc...

Haha!! I was just playing!

I have some UK Joe Hill and that's about it for foreign for me. I have to draw the line somewhere and by making that decision it leaves me free to purchase other notable authors (some just notable to me I'm sure...haha!) and other things related to King's work that I wouldn't otherwise get. If I had the money then I would though probably. lol...it irks me not to be a completist but I cannot be one so I must let it go....gah....bugs me as I type even.

Wow, that is awesome. Do you own this copy? I assume so, so did king sign the book in your presence? If so, did he have any notable reaction to signing this particular infamous title? Or if you acquired it after it was already signed, do you know about the circumstances of the signing? Like did King have to be coaxed into signing? Sorry for all the questions, but I feel like there's an interesting story behind this rarity:)

In April 1989 Mr. KING came to the Pasadena Calif. Library to do research for his story The Library Policeman at that time he did a talk & signing. He was not pushing any particular book at that time so he was just signing books as I approached the table I presented him with a framed Xeroxed copy of the TIME cover (Below) & proceeded to place NEBEL in front of him (notice that it is signed on the title page... I was not trying to pull a fast one on him by having him sign a blank page.) & he signed the book without question.

Ha! That is awesome. I wonder if he knew or if he was just sort of spacing out and didn't notice. I mean, it's not like 'NEBEL' isn't big and bold on that title page! Then again, I would guess that he lives a good portion of his life inside his own head and pays minimal attention to the real world sometimes, so maybe he was a little 'on autopilot' right then! Thanks for sharing that. Do you know of any other copies of this book that are signed by King? Or do you have the literal only one?

It is nice. It would be nicer if the eyes on the first page lined up better with the cut-outs on the front cover. In my experience only about one in ten copies are perfectly aligned. Back in the day we used to go to used bookstores and look specifically for copies with lined up eyes. Even back then they were hard to find.

This might not be a "real" Pride and Joy, but it's my first attempt at binding.

Eyes of the Dragon 1st/1st bound in Sea Snake skin.

I tried to show the metallic green shine. Figured it would be an appropriate covering due to the name. At least made more sense that iridescent green skin on a 1st/1st Carrie. haha! :)

I still need to get the name of the book on there and I think I might use one of the real SK stamps I have to "brand" it like a real cover. If I heat up the copper and then quickly touch the snakeskin, I think I might get that SK to be on it nicely. Or destroy it. DOH!

You gotta ask yourself this question. Do I feel lucky....

But check out this side by side scan.
The smaller one has 1st printing March 1979 & $2.75 price & book #44107 with glossy photos in the center & red page ends.
The larger one has no printing history, No price & book # 44107 with dull photos in same location & white page ends & both books have the same page count.

It's things like this that made book hunting fun. (How the fuck can you do that on the internet?)

Johnny007, you don't have to reply if you don't want to, but as this is the first sale of a 1st state since well, forever, might I require as to the approx sale price?

I respectfully decline to post the price. Some people will say I'm crazy for paying what I paid and others will say what I wonderful deal I got. So I want to keep the details to the participants in this deal.

I will say that there was conversation when one of the other five books recently became available on ABE. Gerald recounted that about 7-10 years ago an agent of Michael Flatley (Lord of the Dance fame) offered the then-current owners $40K for their copy. All owners declined at that price. Apparently Gerald kept negotiating a price and got the agent to offer $61K. He still declined to sell at that price. So obviously after 7-10 years the $40K amount will be below what any owner would accept to part with their copy. ABE takes 20% off the top so that puts their copy in the $60K range...and I don't know if this is a straight sale or if it's a consignment. Honestly, I haven't paid that much attention to it. It's obviously an opportunity that people will consider. That's all I can offer at this time. Sorry for rambling on.

John

If I am not mistaken, Abe do not take 20%.

The seller pays fees according to the amount of books they sell.
Then, for each sale there are commissions of 8% (for a maximum of $40) + card fees (3.5% for orders above $500)
>>> http://help.abebooks.com/how-much-does-it-cost-to-sell-on-abebooks/

Anyway, congrats on this grail !

I'm sorry for not replying sooner. I stand corrected. You are 100% spot on regarding ABE charges. I relied on word of mouth from a notable bookseller about 5-10 years ago and never questioned the gentleman nor did I do any research to confirm the ABE costs. I appreciate your correcting me -- I won't make that mistake again.

John

This is AKC posting a New Pride and Joy on behalf of WEBSTAR1000.

As many of you know, I have spent the last year in aggressive pursuit of original art that was ultimately used as the COVER or INTERIOR illustrations from the likes of Whelan, Maitz and Palumbo. At the beginning of my quest, Kris was instrumental in connecting me with the 3 artists. Since that initial introduction, I have weekly dialogue with each and am fortunate now to have 9 original cover and interior pieces from the CD Shining, CD 'Salem's and the Dark Tower series.

Rest assured, the acquisition of these pieces would not have been possible without Kris' help.

Anyway, along the way of obtaining the originals, I also acquired various works/prelims that were not used as a Cover or Interior art and, as result, ultimately not core to my collection goals. Beautiful original pieces, but not on a cover or in a book.

As a result, I sold the two below to Kris in appreciation for his help along the way. Sold them to him because I know his love for Whelan and that these will reside in his collection until the day he sells it all........

SO CONGRATS ON THE NEW PRIDE AND JOYS KRIS AND THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!!

I'm not sure what you are asking. I think the Christine S/L is really nice and I think it is the only place the Gervais illustrations were ever published. But I think you are saying that the lettered edition offers no additional features or quality over the numbered editions. If that is the case then you are right. Same book just with a letter in place of a number. But isn't that the case with all the Grant S/L's with letters? The Gunslinger, The Talisman, Christine. In Grant's defense these weren't offered for sale at a higher price or advertised as something special. I've always thought of them as overruns or extra copies and they needed something to do with them so they wrote letters in after all the numbered copies were done. Same with Cujo by the Mysterious Press. They have become collector's items after the fact.

I think he might be talking that the lettered edition doesn't have a description for it. It's just the same as the numbered.

Isn't that sort of what I said? Extra copies that got a letter written in after the numbering was done? Oh well.

Question: Does anyone have an earlier flat signed date by Stephen King than 4/12/74?

No inscriptions, you friends of the King family! haha! (The reason I give this restriction for this scavenger hunt is that I think Bruce showed an inscription on I believe one of his Carrie's and it stated it was Stephen King's first signed book. It was about a month before publication. Truly amazing inscription honestly. Can't think of many that would be more cool for a King collector to have. As I will never be able to measure up to that feat (or really most of Bruce's collection), it got me thinking about "flat" signed books for those that do not either know King and/or haven't been collecting for the length of time to be able to get cool inscriptions (either recent or super early ones).

Initially, purely selfish reasons to see how close mine is to the earliest being only a week after publication and I figure anyone getting signatures that early is most likely going to have an inscription which makes the flat signed signatures from this very early time actually more rare (though maybe not as cool). After thinking about the earliest inscription I've ever see (and the fact it stated it was the first signature by King himself), it would seem we of all people in the world should know these odd facts?

Like a running awards board new Thread kinda thing:
1st known inscription.
1st known flat signed.
First Remarque on a King book. (maybe even vote on coolest remarques on a particular book).
Best inscription.
Best signature.
Worst signature (known legit).
Worst signature (not legit...this would be fun). etc...

You get the idea. Just a thought.

Sooooooooo, I'm wondering how many signatures predate 4/12/74 that do not have an inscription?

Something small....
For a short time there were in Hamburg a few books machines, rebuild cigarette machines.
One of the books that you could get there was a novel by Gunter Gerlach whose books I collect for a longer time.
Unfortunately, the bookmaschine company quickly went bankrupt, since I was trying to get one of the rare miniature books from Gunter Gerlach.
http://www.automatenverlag.de/Blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/automathangt1-300x238.jpg

Some weeks ago I spoke with a work colleague about books, and he told me that he has exactly this book, incl. the superrare small box. He gave it to me, and I went to a bookreading event from Gunter Gerlach last week.
He was surprised to see the book and signed it for me.
Now, my Gunter Gerlach signed book collection is almost complete....

Thanks again Moshe!

YOU'RE WELCOME, DAN.

It's also a nice surprise for me to open up my day with my handwriting & signatures (also in Hebrew) in the site! Cool. Thank you, Dan.

Just got confirmation that my lot of postcards are shipping (finally). Then I have to mail them to Israel. Then we have to hope that the author doesn't hold onto them as long as Gillian Flynn or other famous authors! Then mailed back to the states. I LOVE the STORY! Looking forward to the full unabridged version someday!

I always have the spines of my slip/traycases showing. Like you do here.
Except for the Skeleton Crew set. I hate the fact PS decided to leave the spine blank.
One day I have the books like you do, the next I turn them around again...and again...and again.....:(
(Love those skeletons though!)

1st/1st of The Stand. It has a name on the inside, and the binding feels slightly weak. On the plus side, the jacket is immaculate (no tears, stains, spots, etc), with only a bit of crumpling on the top of the spine. Only cost me 75$, which, despite the name inside, I think is a steal.

So, there was actually a press folder for 11.22.63? I didnt get it :-(
The Art of Horror by Stepen Jones, with an intro by Neil Gaiman. I saw by accident that it got released in france at the end of the year

I like the ... goes to the drive in proof. Never seen one before. Nice haul ! Given the fact that you always get huge haul like this, I bet that you wont have much space left very fast!

I don't have much space left! LOL. I'm currently trying to figure out how to optimize the space. I'll probably have to buy new bookcases specially designed for the space but these cost A LOT (more than U$S 1000) so I'm thinking alternatives. It's not like I'll stop buying books :D

Thanks all for the comments!
