So does your copy have the crease down the center of the spine? Some are creased there and some are creased where the spine meets the rear panel.

Bob,

It's hard to see the crease on the photo but on the picture of the spine you can see the crease about 1/8 of an inch from front and running through the first apostrophe of "Salem's. After that, it is difficult to see on the photo. I've also noticed that the dj has a different "texture" or feel to it. That doesn't translate very well in a picture, either. Is that texture or feel of the dj the same as yours?

Johnny007, you don't have to reply if you don't want to, but as this is the first sale of a 1st state since well, forever, might I require as to the approx sale price?

I respectfully decline to post the price. Some people will say I'm crazy for paying what I paid and others will say what I wonderful deal I got. So I want to keep the details to the participants in this deal.

I will say that there was conversation when one of the other five books recently became available on ABE. Gerald recounted that about 7-10 years ago an agent of Michael Flatley (Lord of the Dance fame) offered the then-current owners $40K for their copy. All owners declined at that price. Apparently Gerald kept negotiating a price and got the agent to offer $61K. He still declined to sell at that price. So obviously after 7-10 years the $40K amount will be below what any owner would accept to part with their copy. ABE takes 20% off the top so that puts their copy in the $60K range...and I don't know if this is a straight sale or if it's a consignment. Honestly, I haven't paid that much attention to it. It's obviously an opportunity that people will consider. That's all I can offer at this time. Sorry for rambling on.

Having arguably the best copy in existence and the means to own it certainly gives you the right to pay whatever you want. Congrats on the book!

John

If I am not mistaken, Abe do not take 20%.

The seller pays fees according to the amount of books they sell.
Then, for each sale there are commissions of 8% (for a maximum of $40) + card fees (3.5% for orders above $500)

Anyway, congrats on this grail !

It's been a while since I've had a King item worthy of posting in this thread, but I just received an absolutely fantastic piece thanks to Kris (and Tim):

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y265/Therionfan/Books/20151229_225411.jpg (http://s7.photobucket.com/user/Therionfan/media/Books/20151229_225411.jpg.html)

This is an original piece from Dave Palumbo painted onto a BCE of 'Salem's Lot. I believe Kris had said this was the copy of the book that had inspired Dave's art (I could be wrong on that) and is one of only two pieces that he made that were not added to the CD edition of 'Salem's Lot (Kris still has the other), but is to be added to the portfolio.

Thanks Kris! I love it!

I picture your face on the other side... actually not, your face is perfect; but the lady in the story should have a tall narrow face-think Celine Deon shaped face with just a bit less of a pointed witch chin. You are the perfect Sarah from The Dead Zone

Got some insane proofs the last few days and a bunch I just felt like getting. Jurassic Park, Patriot Games, Thinner, Needful Things, Pet Semetary, Hyperion, 5th Wave, Maze Runner, Sphere, entire Girl with Dragon Tattoo set (5 proofs), Titan, Wizard, Clan of the Cave whole series, Da Vinci Code. Also some amazing books 1st/1st books too! Talisman signed 1st/1st, Animal Farm 1st/1st (US), Neuromancer (Phantasia S/L and regular version too), Steven Erikson series set of 1st/1st's, Watership Down (US), Book of the Dun Cow, Call of the Wild (not a 1st, but old version for cheap..shrug. Whole bunch of other books too. I decided to fill a bunch of holes in the collection I have in my mind.

Now I have many of them in real life!!! I have a few more targets, but am negotiating still with sellers. I'll take pics and maybe do the "CurtSeattle" collection in that forum area where people do that, but will have to attack that another day. :)

I will take some when they get to me. I struggled with UK vs US on the Watership Down, Neuromancer and others, but I'm cool with going US and letting the $2k+ UK ones stay in the UK (though OFFICIAL 1st/1st's...it bugs me as I type it still...grrrr).

Figure I cannot have every book and paying twice as much for a UK b/c the "true" 1st vs getting another book or two that I want didn't make sense to me.

*EDIT: I moved this post from the Secret Santa thread where I first posted it as I wanted to give maximum exposure to the generosity of all the denizens of The Tower*

Courtesy of Anonymous Santa, may I present...

This is absolutely amazing and I am humbled at the gesture. You folks, all of you, are just the best. It inspires me to seek out a new collector and do my best to help them build up their sets.

My thanks to AKC for facilitating this... it arrived in perfect condition.

There was on small... requirement... as part of receiving this though. It MAY provide a small hint as to the sender.
And to honor this part I present to you....
With my hand upon what in this neck of the woods passes as a bible, I make the following proclamation...
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/774/medium/pledge.JPG

I LOVE THE NEW YORK YANKEES!!!!!!!!!! They are the singularly greatest team in the history of all baseball!!! Never shall there be a team with the power and glory to surpass the Yankees in their overall superiority!!!

now, to ease the pain of that last bit, I'm going to go look at my new book again. :)

It is driving me crazy. lol! I think I'm going to stick with just U.S. unless some insane deal on UK. If I bought the UK, then I'd probably buy the US too anyway and that's even more money. I was able to buy a lot more books by not going for the UK versions on the few authors I collect that were from there. Over the weekend I was able to get an amazing 1st/1st 1984 (US) by Orwell and it has a cool story behind it. I'll post it when I get it. $200 only and my bookcase is going to be very happy with new "important" books like Watership Down, Animal Farm, Nineteen Eighty Four, etc..1st/1st (US...grrr!) states. :)

That seems high for a US edition, but I bought my copy many years ago so, I don't really know current market prices. If you get a prized edition, I highly recommend a Dolso case for it!!! Really adds to the display and protection IMHO

I was looking at an 8th US (I wanted both sets of illustrations) and they are going for $800+

That seems high for a US edition, but I bought my copy many years ago so, I don't really know current market prices. If you get a prized edition, I highly recommend a Dolso case for it!!! Really adds to the display and protection IMHO

Since I have moved flat and now has new shelves, I want to develop my collection as in the past I restrained myself because of a lack of space.
I was recently contacted by a belgium collector that wanted to sell her collection, so I grabbed a few books of hers and recieved them today : 30 books, after making sure she sent me the details and confirmed that those that I wouldnt plan to resell but keeping are actually first french editions.

So here are the 30 books that i have recieved :

Every single french edition of RAGE, in pretty good condition ! I originally wanted to resell them, but now cannot decide if I actually want to sell them all or not...
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/01.jpg

For selling : COLORADO KID (who was only printed once in France, the publisher told me 10 000 copies I believe, and can only be found as used now as it is not reprinted). It is weird though, because I believe that the english version gets reprints, right?
Also available for sale, is an unnumbered french limited edition of THE GREEN MILE 1 with fac simile message and signature by Steve.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/02.jpg

A set of mass paperbacks for IT
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/03.jpg

Bunch of 1st french editions I was lacking.

Also, among the books is one that I have never heard about before : in France, IT was released in 2 volumes by Albin Michel. I now have what seem to be the canadian version which is 1 big book of 1120 pages. Printed in canada, mine has a sticker price in dollars (canadian I guess). The odd thing is that the book opens with a "1" like in book 1, but I dont see any "2" at the middle or anywhere actually. Sort of odd, but the book is complete.

Hey! You are definitely what I would consider an expert. What do you think about the date of the signature? That has to be an early one since only a week after it was released and his 1st book, right? I see later ones from people sending in books after King became more well known, but this is one of the earliest I've seen. (Figure you or someone else here has signed ones with King's signature and date WHILE he was writing it. LOL!)

Yes, a very early signature, just days of publication date of Carrie. Wow! Beautiful.

As for having his signature while he wrote Carrie isn't exactly true.... I received my signature from King while he ran naked down the street holding the $10,000 check from Doubleday. It's a tad squiggly but an early signature...haha

http://s21.postimg.org/vm48u91er/Carrie_Signed_King_Date_Page.jpg (http://postimg.org/image/vm48u91er/)

I have a 1st/1st already with perfect DJ, so will swap DJ's, sell the 1st/1st I have now but with the DJ from this one and then have a perfect signed early date Carrie that will have cost me a fraction of normal price! I'm only into my Carrie I have now $400 (I bought/sold them 3x to get my cost average down while upgrading it) Say I get $700 or so for it, then taking that off sale price here = Signed Carrie for @$500. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Looks like all the ones I checked over and over last night. Would seem odd to risk trying to pull of a King signature on a 1st/1st Carrie with felt tip as well so the fact that it does look like his old ones AND is in felt made me feel it was more likely legit.

Also, it's slightly uncool of you to rain on his new P&J in this thread.

SkyOfCrack, you could have worded it a million other ways, so I was messing with you back. "Wow! His early signatures are different than now. Never knew that." as an example of questioning in a nice way. I will edit my comment out now that I've f'd with you back a a bit. :)

Love those examples as I can see the signatures are almost exact matches (even with a felt tip pen...dare I say the 1st felt tip signatures of King? lol!!).

Now that I see a signature on a Carrie from BEFORE release and he actually says it is his 1st book signed. Jesus. #awestruck

His response to you was a bit caustic, but it also was acceptable.

Best thing to do is move on.

FWIW, quite some time ago a member posted a King "signed" item either in the P&J thread or in their collection thread. A member whose opinion is highly regarded PM'd me wondering if they should tell the person the signature was likely bogus.
Long story short, the member privately contacted the person about the signature. Then the buyer publicly asked for opinions and the consensus was the signature was bad. The buyer was grateful for the private contact, and for the solicited public opinion.

Yes, exactly how I've been contacted on a different book (and by a definite no question expert) and I appreciate the concern and have provided more information to get their continued opinion. No way to 100% know ever so just have to glean what we can from the facts surrounding the acquisition and other relevant items.

We all read King, so better have thick skins and be able to dish it back and forth or we should bail to the "Twilight" forums, so I wasn't ever really mad at ya, SOC. Just methin' with ya. (Ace Ventura voice but "meth" "crack" pun!) hahaha! :)

p.s. I had to use an example, so I am sorry if the Twilight series is anyone's favorite series. :P

OK. Thanks. It is an excerpt from Danse Macabre.

Actually, Justin Brooks mentioned that even when it was believed it was an excerpt, it's not:

While this as billed as an interview with King, by Sheila Weller, it appears that it is actually several very long quotes, edited into article form, or a piece that was actually written entirely by him. Also, it is important to note that, for years, many sources have listed this piece as an excerpt from Danse Macabre, but this doesn’t appear to be the case.

Interesting. Does the article say BY Stephen King? Or is it attributed to no one in particular? Can you post a pic of the table of contents and the first page of the article?

I just pulled the trigger on a Carrie 1st/1st with this...

http://s21.postimg.org/vm48u91er/Carrie_Signed_King_Date_Page.jpg (http://postimg.org/image/vm48u91er/)

Carrie was released on 4/5/1974, so pretty early signature for King since 1st book.

Awesome: congratulations - very nice signature!!

sk

Could NOT be happier after receiving book in mail!!! DJ wasn't mint on this rare signed Carrie, but the book itself was in very good condition for sure (especially considering age and lack of pictures in auction). I couldn't remember how nice my DJ was on my existing 1st/1st Carrie and wouldn't let myself check until I got this new one. I just checked/swapped the DJ's and am happy happy happy. DJ I had was in great shape so now it's on the signed Carrie and I have a very nice signed 1st/1st Carrie to be one of my prized possessions! I will sell my old book with the newly received DJ and offset my costs for my super nice Carrie and all is well in the world. :D

The piece in Self is definitely an excerpt from Danse Macabre, or rather several portions of DM thrown together. It is, however, strange that it's billed as an interview by Sheila Weller.

2) I got what i never thought i would be able to add to my artwork collection - a Bernie Wrightson Roland
In this case the prelim for the DTV Cover ART (PB)

I don't think that there is an item in the King world that i was more after,
and that i was absolute sure i never would get ;D

It's quite the cool edition, much more art than I had anticipated. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the art style, but it sort of gives it almost like a children's picture book feel, like a Robert Munsch. I dig it.

Congrats on the portfolio John, Bernie is a hell of an artist!

Glenn (roseannebarr) was present at Stephen King and John Grisham event in Bradenton, FL and decided to give King, as a gift, this HOOT postcard with my story.
Thank you so much Glenn! You made an outstanding gesture on my behalf. A chance like this doesn't come across every day!

Very cool! And a funny story, Moshe!

Congrats Moshe and a great thing to do by Glenn!

Is it still possible to pick up one of those postcards Moshe?

THANKS, dnemec and Simon.
Yes, Simon. PM me.

The title alone is worth the money spent on the story.

Dont you ever dare marry a book collector! Instant classic. i hear there is a bidding war on the movie rights.

I just ordered 5 copies. My hope is to get them signed by the author and returned to the states. The story is most excellent. If the author agrees to sign (I hear he is very difficult and hard to deal with, a recluse living in a foreign country), if i could convince him to sign, would anyone else like a copy? signed or blank? Only have a few to spare.

I believe CREEPSHOW is a MUST HAVE for any real King collector. I mean even if you never look at any of the other comic books or "promo" items or proofs, etc... No way some people can justify a 1st/1st Carrie or a number of other "normal" King books due to the cost...they want them at least. If you say you are a King collector and you don't have CREEPSHOW (I even feel myself forced to type it in all caps), then I don't think you are even trying to a be a King collector. Such a perfect example of King stories and mind at a critical time in his career and showing that he was willing to venture from his comfort zone and delight his fans. All for a reasonable price still.

The movie followed Carrie, Salem's Lot and The Shining! A movie that strayed from more Twilight Zone/Hitchcockian feel (sorry about that image) and to the Horror..dare I say Comedy....genre. A tribute back to the 50's "B" movies in style and pulled off with success similar to the amazing movies that preceded it. It was a triumphant scream at the world that King was here to stay and would continue to deliver for his faithful followers and not grow complacent. I know it didn't make huge Box Office revenue but it has had legs. I would bet that if you grabbed a group of younger people and asked if they had seen Carrie or Creepshow, then you would find Creepshow would have had more views. Same for The Shining and Salem's Lot. Think about it.

The book and the movie were important for King. To this day, his son carries on that legacy and tie to this style of wry humor mixed in with the horror.

Not really a big comic/graphic novel collector here other than I do have most all of the King comics (I got as a huge set for cheap) and a Heavy Metal Magazine complete run from 79 on (missing last 2 years but fixed soon). I just give a lot of credit for someone who was riding a wave at the time and didn't take it for granted. That has been proven time and time again over the course of his life and through his work, my life too.

Bravo I say to CREEPSHOW and well played young Stephen King....well played.

I think you got a great deal for a great copy. I see around $100 and up signed. $50-$125 not signed depending on condition.

Edit: Signed by Bernie...not signed by King for that pricing. Biiig difference in siggies there. :)

Not to mention CREEPSHOW was a great love letter to EC comics, a huge influence on many a young baby-boomer who would go on to redefine the horror & sci-fi genres in books and film.
