Here is my Clive Barker drawing, definately not a new item I pre-ordered this in 1989 or 1990, published by the now gone comic book company Eclipse. Clive Barker Illustrator. I really enjoy his art.

I just won this UK 1st edition Salem's Lot for $150 which I think is a pretty fine price. Book and jacket are in decent condition. I'm not a big collector of UK first editions, but I do have the signed Carrie and given that I have a signed US 1st Salem's Lot as well as the S/L and Lettered editions, I felt I should own a 1st UK to complete the set. I am very please with my purchase.

Not sure under which heading to post this. It is not really a "Pride and Joy" but interesting nonetheless.

I got this NEW IDEA magazine (2/16/85) on eBay from an Australian seller. The listing said it had writing by King in it. I figured it was probably an excerpt from DANSE MACABRE or something else that had been previously published. I queried the seller and he said it looked to be original writing and there was nothing to indicate it had previously been published. So I took a chance and bought it.

I couldn't find a listing for it in either the Collings or the Brooks bibliography. So I sent a scan to Rocky Wood. It appears to be a previously uncatalogued nonfiction piece by King. Surprising since, according to Rocky, NEW IDEA is a pretty mainstream magazine in Australia. Anyway, it is nice to "discover" new writing by King and add to the bibliographers list.

Photos of the cover and King writing. I left the article pretty big so maybe those interested can read it. Nothing new in the article but still interesting reading.

Maybe a little. Mostly, though, it is to not jinx myself. I never count on a book being in my collection until I actually have it in my hands. I've had a few (very few, thankfully) items lost in the mail, etc.

And, again, these items are not very expensive ones and will have limited appeal but have gotten me pretty pumped up. And make it FOUR items on the way. I just hit on another one I have been long looking for this morning!

Don't give me too much credit. I just spend WAY too much time on the internet. I actually find it pretty relaxing and very enjoyable. I've developed some searching protocols (nothing elaborate) that work for me and can pretty quickly scan new listings on eBay, ABE, etc. to find the things that interest me. I do them daily and I suspect I am not doing anything much different than many other collectors. There is a lot of competition out there.

Finally! I just grabbed something that had been on eBay less than an hour:

Stephen King signed copy of Dark Forces (unrevised Proof). Also signed by Etchison and "others" according to the listing.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Dark_Forces.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Dark_Forces_signed.jpg

The Dark Forces ARC just arrived. Turns out it is signed by 9 authors:
Dennis Etchison
Edward Bryant
Karl Wagner
Gene Wolfe
Ramsey Campbell
Joe Haldeman
Charles Grant
Richard Christian Matheson (the son)
Stephen King

The book is in pretty good condition, but in a couple places the pages are at risk of coming loose from the spine because I think the book has been opened a lot. Still, I am quite happy with it.

Yea, you're not. I've been told by another that does similar things. I personally haven't figured that out yet, but I need too, as there are some books that I just can never find, and I bet they come and go, but my skills are not sharp enough to catch them when they are available.

nice print Ari, that's the best one he did for the Green Mile, The Chair.

This is a new art book by Centipede Press. Artists Inspired by Lovecraft. As you guys know from ‘Salem’s Lot he makes huge books, and this is no exception. It was measured at 17 pounds and the traycase is over a foot wide, and a foot and a half tall. It’s a beast. It also comes with a folder of art prints.

Btw, I usually don’t care for novels to be oversized, but artwork I don’t mind. But, there is no way to read this book, except on a table. lol

Theres two states this books come in (although the book itself is identical in both).

One comes in a slipcase, regular price is $395, its on sale right now for $295.

The other comes in a traycase with a portfolio of extra prints, the traycase and prints are limited to 150 copies. Regular price is $495, its on sale right now for $395.

Ari -

If you are looking at purchasing this book keep in mind its huge weight, as shipping will be expensive. It ran $50 for me, and Canada is a days drive from Colorado. To Argentina.... I don't even want to guess

Just to chime in, if you look at Gauntlet's web site, you'll see a few Lettered PC's for sale. They usually always come with the slipcase, so they don't get confused with the regular Lettered Editions. I bought the Lettered PC for $500 (instead of the regular $1000) of Bradbury's Dark Carnival. It was worth it, as I wanted the extra work, not the traycase.

I guess the point of this thread is Gauntlet is one of those publishers (like PS did with Colorado Kid) where he'll sell Lettered PC's as stock.

If I recall correctly Juliana, you beat me out of the one I wanted on ebay earlier this year...or maybe it was late last year. >< I think you got yours from tinah3...right?

I think you got a better price than I did. I paid $450 plus shipping for mine.

I am glad you told me yours was in a slipcase...so I am not alone in my misery. :P

Did I?. I did not know you were also bidding on that one. Yes, mine was from Tinah. I am considering putting it up for sale. It's a really nice edition, but I've got my eyes on something else.

Thanks Geoff, for the info.

I just received a number of packages (we had to take an unscheduled trip out-of-state and I asked the Post Office to hold our mail).

Included were:

Cavalier March 1977 The Cat From Hell Part 1
Gent December 1977 The Cat From Hell
Cavalier Annual 1975 Gray Matter
Cavalier Annual 1976 Night Surf

UK edition of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

Dark Love proof Lunch at the Gotham Cafe

The Dark Love proof is signed by all three editors on the title page, Ramsey Campbell, Doug Winter, plus another signature I can't make out on the ffep. Thumbnails of the cover of the proof and the signature are below. Any idea on who the signature is? I'm thinking it may be Kathe Koja.

I know most of the sigs of all the horror authors of the last 30 years, but that one does not ring a bell John. You guess might be right, as I've never heard or seen Kathe Koja's sig before.

Nothing major, but since I have decided to keep my first UK collection I have since picked up the UK firsts of The Regulators and Hearts in Atlantis, both great covers btw.

I'm now just down to 7 UK hardcovers to complete the set (not counting the Bachman paperbacks), which surprisingly is less than the number of books I need to complete a set of US firsts.

Congratulations, Geoff. I really like the UK editions and consider them one of my favorite parts of my collection. I don't really collect any other foreign editions unless there is a cover illustration that I particularly like. But I do love the UK's. I can probably guess which seven you are lacking and nice copies of those can get pretty expensive. Best of luck on "the hunt."

Yea Bob's got it right, most are the early ones. Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Stand, Night Shift, Different Seasons, The Talisman, and Rose Madder.

I actually passed (forgot to bid) on a good UK version of Different Seasons last week. Oh well.

And yes bob, I do like the UK Editions as well. Many of the covers are more attractive than the US covers. Plus they did a great job on the last three Dark Tower books.

EDIT: Forgot one. I also need a UK Danse Macabre.

I don't but I do know a paper conservationist who might be able to help. He has done some things for me in the past and was referred to me by Lloyd Currey. He does work for museums, restores/repairs 17th century manuscripts, etc. He is really, really good. He is also a King fan. His name is George Sargent.

He does them as the order is placed. I requested DT related remarques twice (the third copy I own I bought from another King fan). As he has just finished the artwork for Little Sisters, I can bet he will do a DT sketch for you. I wasn't sure about this. My copy came shrinkwrapped with the limitation number on a sticker outside of the shrinkwrap. And it came REALLY fast from Glass Onion. I got the feeling it had been drawn previously. And, now that I look at the drawing again, I see it was signed in 2006. So mine, at least, was not a drawn to order sketch.

Here is Audrey's response:

Hi David –

We don’t usually number the books until after Michael has done the painting and drawing. I keep a record in a notebook of all the numbers and in most cases who owns them. I just figured out that for some unknown reason we had never sold #19. Bob has been a faithful collector for so long, he seemed like the obvious choice to get it. Michael did the drawing a few months ago when he did a batch of books for me and it seemed to be just right for Bob. (Actually, I questioned MW about the size of the gun, but he said that Roland often mentions how big the gun is and it was the way he imagined it when he was doing the drawing in the book.)

At the moment, I can’t remember how many books are left - the notebook is in my shipping room and it seems far away ;) 20-30 sounds about right. It is certainly high time that we do a new book!

Best,

Audrey

I am very sorry. I completely forgot to ask this question. I will try to see if I can get an answer. Will let you all know, hopefully.

Best,

Audrey

Audrey is a hoot to work with. I asked for #19 when I ordered my book sometime ago. This is her personal note to me on it:

Ralph,

We are reserving the #19. Not sure why we are hanging onto it, Michael may keep it. However, I want you to have number 432. 432 you ask???

Count the numbers backwards....23 - 4 = 19

Hope you enjoy the book and Michaels 1 of 1.

Audrey

Again, she is a hoot to work with. I feel honored to own the book.

I'm strongly considering this to be one of the next two books I buy, mind you not for a few weeks (tuition is due:doh:) - is there a "comments" field when ordering through Whelan's website that you can request a DT related sketch? or did you call and order from the Whelans personally?

A couple of years ago Chris Cavalier started selling the greatest Stephen King collection ever. One of the many items I bought from him was the original handwritten manuscript for THE NEW LIEUTENANT'S RAP submitted to Philtrum Press for publication. It has since been one of my favorite items but it really doesn't look like much by itself. Original King manuscript material is very scarce in private collections, much less handwritten, so I wanted to spiff it up a bit. George Sargent at Dragonfly Bindery made this custom clamshell case to house the manuscript and one of the proofs.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/TNLRclamshell.jpg

Green leather spine with green cloth boards. There is a leather inset on the front board where George has fashioned a peace sign that accurately reproduces the hand drawn peace sign used on the finished Philtrum Press edition.

Lots of nice gold stamping and lettering on the spine.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/TNLRclamshellspine.jpg

Opened to show the contents. The manuscript is on the left, now housed in a custom Mylar sleeve. The proof, of course, is on the right.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/TNLRclamshellcontents.jpg

George and Patricia Sargent do really good work. They are now starting to work on a case for my unbound galley proof of THE SHINING. Stay tuned.

That is superb Bob. And congratulations on the original manuscript. George and Patricia have made something beautiful to house an otherwise drab piece. I especially like the insert. That's a nice touch.

Manuscripts are not very pretty and deserve something good to protect and display them. I look forward to viewing 'The Shining' one.

Is that your only handwritten manuscript in your possesion, Bob?. Do you own others?.

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone.

That is the only handwritten manuscript in my collection.

Your question got me to thinking of what else might be available. There is a notebook that was auctioned for charity several years ago that had several pages of a short story called "Keyholes." I can't recall if it is a complete or partial story. I don't know who owns that today.

I think there may be something similar (partial story, that is) for "The Leprechaun." I don't know who owns that either.

The handwritten piece on Bruce Springsteen is still for sale through Betts Bookstore. It is part of Chris Cavalier's collection.

I've got the original manuscript for the partial story "Wimsey" but it is typewritten not handwritten.

Can anyone think of other handwritten manuscript material in private hands?

I don't blame you for waiting. I never "officially" add an item to my collection until it is in my hands. I've had a few (not too many, thankfully) mishaps involving lost or damaged packages, dishonest sellers, etc. I feel you can jinx yourself by talking about it too early. Sort of like teammates not talking to a baseball pitcher if he is pitching a no-hitter.

Last week, I won an auction for a signed copy of Nightmares & Dreamscapes. The seller never stated if it was 1st edition or BCE. I emailed the seller, and all I could get out of him was that it was NOT a BCE. I was still not sure if it was a 1st, but I decided to bid anyhow, and won it for $86 shipped.

It arrived today, and I was pleased to discover that it is in fact a 1st edition.

Which one should I keep?

Both are signed on the title page.

The inscribed copy is in slightly better condtion (FINE) than the signed copy (NEAR FINE).

The inscribed copy is dated (the year after it was published), whereas the signed copy is not dated (obviously a more recent signature).

Thoughts?

That's the one thing, many collectors find that signatures with an inscription and/or date is harder to forge. And the situation seems more likely that it would have been signed by the author at a book signing, since it's addressed to someone.

Sure anything could be forged, but I find I am more confident in my signature if it's been inscribed.

Nice buy Tippy!.

I just got this in the mail yesterday:

Mr.RT,

It's got that 'bling' that any girl would appreciate. Woohooo!.

Dazzling. Congratulations. Have you tried it on yet?

Bling: flashy jewelry worn especially as an indication of wealth; broadly : expensive and ostentatious possessions

Absolutely!.

It looks wonderful on my shelf. It's a lot more flashy than I though it would look. Like an oversized jewellery.

Congratulations, Juliana! That looks like a very nice copy. I can't understand those who say they are disappointed in the looks of that lettered edition. I think it is stunning.

Juliana...I think I speak for everyone here in that we all hate you! :shoot:

Seriously though, wonderful puchase.

I have come to terms with the fact that I will never own one.

Juliana, congratulations. I would also presume you bought at a price equal to or less than what the book was selling for a decade+ ago.
