I get the Wizard of Oz one, but I also see a reference to The Scarlet Letter. Particularly in the line:

She flung the pail of paint at her neice, splattering her pants and dressing her tied hands in a pair of wet scarlet gloves.

What other references did you catch?

Sorry if this has been discussed before. :/

do you take this as a reference to the scarlet letter simply because he uses the term scarlet instead of the term red in describing the color of the paint? or are you saying the symbology of the painted hands is somehow a correlary to the letter A in hawthorne's story?

in the scarlet letter, the A was for adultery. since neither roland nor susan were married to others, there would have been no adultery on either of their parts. or are you referencing hawthorne's concepts of sin in general as opposed to the specific sin of adultery?

i think the hawthorne comparison is interesting. anyone else?
