There is certain music I was hooked on while reading DT7. To this day, when I listen to it, I can still remember exactly how I felt when I finished that story. Its like a little time capsule of that part of my life. I love it.

My Chemical Romance / The Black Parade cd.
There's a song that's chorus is:
I am not afraid to keep on living
I am not afraid to walk this world alone
Honey if you stay I'll be forgiven
Nothing you can say will stop me going home.

Everytime i listen to that, I still picture Roland starting his quest in the desert.

I don't have the music in my ears but the lyrics is very nice. Deep and touching.

I'm sure someone has the video of the song on YouTube. Just do a search on there.

yup!

YouTube - My Chemical Romance-The Black Parade

When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band.
He said,
"Son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken,
The beaten and the damned?"
He said
"Will you defeat them, your demons, and all the non believers, the plans that they have made?"
Because one day I leave you,
A phantom to lead you in the summer,
To join the black parade."

When I was a young boy,
My father took me into the city
To see a marching band.
He said,
"Son when you grow up, will you be the saviour of the broken,
The beaten and the damned?"

Sometimes I get the feeling she's watching over me.
And other times I feel like I should go. Through it all, the rise and fall, the bodies in the streets.
When you're gone we want you all to know We'll Carry on,
We'll Carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on
Carry on
We'll carry on
And in my heart I cant contain it
The anthem wont explain it.

And we will send you reeling from decimated dreams
Your misery and hate will kill us all
So paint it black and take it back
Lets shout it loud and clear
Do you fight it to the end
We hear the call to

To carry on
We'll carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated You're weary widow marches on

And on we carry through the fears
Ooh oh ohhhh
Disappointed faces of your peers Ooh oh ohhhh
Take a look at me cause
I could not care at all Do or die
You'll never make me
Cause the world, will never take my heart
You can try, you'll never break me
Want it all,
I'm gonna play this part
Wont explain or say i'm sorry
I'm not ashamed,
I'm gonna show my scar
You're the chair, for all the broken Listen here, because it's only..
I'm just a man,
I'm not a hero
Just a boy, who's meant to sing this song
Just a man,
I'm not a hero
I -- don't -- care
Carry on
We'll carry on
Though your dead and gone believe me Your memory will carry on
We'll carry on
And though you're broken and defeated You're weary widow marches on
We'll carry on
We'll carry on
We'll carry on
We'll carry
We'll carry on

Wuducynn

Not all of the lyrics in the song remind me of Roland but most do. Their video for it is one of the best ever done in my not-so-humble opinion..

From Yesterday

He’s a stranger to some
And a vision to none
He can never get enough,
Get enough of the one

For a fortune he'd quit
But it’s hard to admit
How it ends and begins
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

From yesterday, it’s coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here

On a mountain he sits, not of gold but of shit
Through the blood he can look, see the life that it took
From the council of one
He’s decided when he’s done with the innocent

On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)
On his face is a map of the world
(A map of the world)

From yesterday, it’s coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here
But he doesn't want to read the message here
But he doesn't want to read the message here
But he doesn't want to read the message here

On his face is a map of the world

From yesterday, it’s coming!
From yesterday, the fear!
From yesterday, it calls him
But he doesn't want to read the message here
From yesterday,
From yesterday,
From yesterday, the fear
From yesterday,
From yesterday
But he doesn't want to read the message here

I like alot of the songs that are actually mentioned in DT - like Summer In The City and of course Bad Company's Bad Company. The lyrics could have been written about the ka-tet, its amazing. Plus, some members of Bad Company - who were also originally in Free - were also in a group called King Crimson and had an album called In The Court Of The Crimson King.

J'ARRIVE

A chaque fois surnuméraire
J'arrive j'arrive

Don't forget their song in that album The Court of the Crimson King

The dance of the puppets
The rusted chains of prison moons
Are shattered by the sun.
I walk a road, horizons change
The tournaments begun.
The purple piper plays his tune,
The choir softly sing;
Three lullabies in an ancient tongue,
For the court of the Crimson King.

The keeper of the city keys
Put shutters on the dreams.
I wait outside the pilgrims door
With insufficient schemes.
The black queen chants
The funeral march,
The cracked brass bells will ring;
To summon back the fire witch
To the court of the Crimson King.

The gardener plants an evergreen
Whilst trampling on a flower.
I chase the wind of a prism ship
To taste the sweet and sour.
The pattern juggler lifts his hand;
The orchestra begin.
As slowly turns the grinding wheel
In the court of the Crimson King.

On soft gray mornings widows cry
The wise men share a joke;
I run to grasp divining signs
To satisfy the hoax.
The yellow jester does not play
But gentle pulls the strings
And smiles as the puppets dance
In the court of the Crimson King.

not T00L, but close enough:

The Hollow - Aperfectcircle

run, desire, run
a sexual being
run him like a blade
to and through the heart, no conscience
one motive: cater to the hollow

screaming feed me here
fill me up again
temporarily pacify this hungering
so grow, libido
throw
dominoes of indiscretions down
falling all around in cycles, in circles
constantly consuming
conquer and devour

'cause its time to bring a fire down
throttle all this indiscretion
long enough to edify
and permanently fill this hollow

screaming feed me here
fill me up again
temporarily pacifying
feed me here
fill me up again
temporarily pacifying

After my second read through the series, I kept hearing music to fit certain images and scenes from the stories. Here's what I came up with just for the heck of it.

1. Vespertilio - Batman Begins - "Opening Credits"

2. The Abyss - Stryper, To Hell With the Devil - "The Man In Black Fled Across the Desert"

3. Myotis - Batman Begins - "Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger" - the picture in my head is Roland shooting up the town of Tull in the first book.

4. "The Wardrobe" - Chronicles of Narnia - "Jake Chambers of New York, 1977"

5. I forget the name but it's a great one from the Stigmata sountrack - "Eddie Dean of New York, 1987"

6. "Immolation Scene" - Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith - "Wizard and Glass: Charyou Tree" - The image is of Susan being burned at the stake at the end of book 4.

7. "At Land's End" - Resurrection Band, Lament - "Ka-Tet, One From Many" - music and lyrics fit PERFECTLY. I hear this one as Roland and company are traveling along I-70 in book 4 after having escaped Blaine the monorail, and Roland is getting ready to tell them about Susan.

8. "Arthur's Farewell" - First Knight (the music with the final battle scene if you have the movie) - "Wolves, Last Comes Gunfire" from Wolves of the Calla (the end of book 5)

9. "The Last Battle" - Chronicles of Narnia - "Saving the Beams" (from book seven - one of the most incredible scenes in the series)

10. "Death of Jonathan Kent" - Superman soundtrack - "Susannah Says Goodbye" from book seven (don't worry, I haven't spoiled anything)

11. "Anakin's Dark Deeds" - Revenge of the Sith - "Crimson King" - from book seven

12. "Molossus" - Batman Begins - "Ascent of the Tower" - book seven

13. "Who Wants To Live Forever" - Queen - "End Credits"

i love to listen to music when i read, but only instrumental music, words are too distracting when i am reading. i have a LOT of music which i think goes well with the Tower but I suspect few people other than Frunobulax would have a clue who I was talking about should I start naming some of it.

i can't listen to anything but classical when i read, i get distracted and sing along...
but if they were to make a movie, here's the end credits in my head:
knights of cydonia by muse.
plus, if you watch them music video, it's a western - i didn't know that when i first heard it but that's always how i imagined it. works out quite perfectly imo :)

Crimson King

By Demons and Wizards

Discordia! Discordia!
Show me your banner
Come show me your sign
The Crimson King's eye
Is the mark to reveal you are mine
I am your master
I will make your dreams come true
I'm your messiah
A twisted one as you may know

My right hands, my servants
My soldiers, my tools
Spread out the good news
Find my children and gather them all
We'll take all low men
All the hatred, evil souls
We share one desire
A wicked one as you may know

Touched by the Crimson King
Touched by the Savior
The tower falls on Judgement Day
Touched by the Crimson King
Touched by the Saviour
Like it's been written many years ago

I am the angel I am madness
I am the word I am the law
I am holding truth release your sadness
I am the key I am the door
Release!
Oh there is
War and evil
Whores and sinners
Take my hand and I show you
Where to go
Call me Flagg
I'm the Good Man
I'm the Dark Man
Take my hand and
I show you where to go
Release!
Come take my hand
To the promised land

Redeemer
Deceiver
The demon
The man in black

The universe is void
Just you and I
Let there be light
The stars will rise
Then fall again
Climbing to the top
An empty room
Is all there is
Oh I fear it is
Prophecies were made of you and I
The vision's strong
But meanwhile keep on falling
Oh what a miracle is life
An even bigger one is size
It's just the way it is
I fear it is
It's just the way it is

Life's a wheel nothing more
It goes round and around and a...
I am the ageless
I am "Legion"
I'm your lord
I will bring terror
I'm a demon in disguise
The thrill of a thousand
Worlds dying at once
But my ultimate goal
Lies beyond the downfall

Touched by the Crimson King
Touched by the Saviour
The tower falls on Judgement Day
Touched by the Crimson King
Touched by the Saviour
Like it's been written many years ago

The Gunslinger

by Demons and Wizards

Songs to sing....

Song of turtle
And the cry of the bear
Awake
I can sense it
Still I'm afraid
Tower road lies ahead
Commala-come-ka
Ka has come to me
Grey old fellow
If you finally fail the test
What would it mean?
We 're getting near
We 're getting near
Maid of sorrow
Your time goes by

Fade away
Fade....

"Say thank, ya'" for the beams are safe my friend
Long days and pleasant nights to you"

Save me,
The final chord
Don't let it end like this
No, not like this
Tell me
When things were finally getting out of hand
It's out of hand

Entangled, I am captured
You have put a spell on me
The last in line
Gunslinger's line

The sacrifice of innocence
This work needs to be done
Now blow the horn
Hail to the gun!

Done is done
Yes, there will be no taking back
Every journey must come to an end
All hail to the gunslinger
Praise to the Dinh and the King
Beyond our reach, out of control

Save me
To touch the rose it will not bring release
No taking back
Come save me
There are other worlds
But surely none like this!
The world has changed

Done is done
Yes there will be no taking back
The word is the law
Law is Ka

The end of the road lies
Straight ahead its lies
I'm feeling pure
The end of the road lies......

The sacrifice of innocence
The hailing of the gun
My Way was Death and madness
Now let the tower come

Done is done
Yes, there will be no taking back
Every journey must come to an end
All hail to the gunslinger
Praise to the Dinh and the King
Beyond our reach, out of control

roland's theme specifically - try to imagine it with strings instead of how it sounds now... potential? maybe?

I also had songs that reminded me of the books very much, and when i lsiten to them i also get the feeling that i got at the end. The two songs that spring to mind are "The Fallen Angel" by Iron Maiden.

You and only god will know
What can be done?
you and only god will know
I am the only one.
you and only god will know
I am the chosen one.

Could it be it's the end of our world?
All the things that we charish and Love
Nothing left but to face this all of my own
cause I am the chosen one.

Rainmaker, also by Iron Maiden.

When I was wandering in the desert,
And was searching for the truth
I heard a choir of angels calling out my name,
I had the feeling that my life would never be the same again
I turn my face towards the barren sun

And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me,
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in our lives like the cracks upon the ground,
They are sealed and are now washed away

You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away,
You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears...

And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me,
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in the ground like the cracks are in our lives,
They are sealed and now far away

You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away,
You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears...

And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me,
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in the ground like the cracks are in our lives,
They are sealed and now far away

That's only the first two that sping to mind.

i'm with monte here, it sounds like video games or old midi files... though i think it's a noble attempt.
roland's theme specifically - try to imagine it with strings instead of how it sounds now... potential? maybe?

Yeah, maybe it would be cool with strings. :)
As it stands now though, not worth the money, imo. :)

I do applaud his efforts for making it though...that in itself is cool as shit! :)

i have found many different songs that remind me of The Dark Tower, this is a thread for you to post the different songs you found that remind you of The Dark Tower. however theres one rule.

the song must contain no words, a person useing their volcal cords in any way other than words is fine.

the song can pertain to any title and be anything at all. if its from western movie or some other copyrighted work, its ok to post, so long as the composers dont post an angry comment.

try to submit only one at a time.

heres mine:
The Ecstasy Of Gold the title doesn't seem very Dark Towerish but the song is. it reminds me especialy of the first and third books.

Yeah, usually western-movie songs make me think of the Dark Tower. And if course the songs that appeared in the books.

Sorry if this has been done before, but this is my frist post here, aside from the Introduce yourself thread.

So if they made a movie (which they prolly will) which songs do you think would be prefect for certin scenes? Base on lyrics, or tempo of the song, or whatever else.

The end should have Bitter Sweet Symphony playing as Roland walks up to the tower.

Temple of Love by Sisters of Mercy would be cool for a shoot out, cause of the fast paced tempo of the music.

And When We Were Young by the Killers when Roland is with Susan for the first time.

Eh, I'll think of more later and add them.

I don't feel like contemporary music would be the way to go at all.

I think more of a "score" would be appropriate.

Seconded. Contemporary music would be completely out of place, other than the instances in which King says specific songs are playing.

I think they should let Johnny Greenwood do it. Didn't he do There Will Be Blood, Jayson? I thought that was well done, and had sort of a Gunslinger feel to it because of the desert.

I agree. Music is very important to a movie, and I think that contemporary music would destroy the feel of The Dark Tower - except, of course, where it is 100% relevent to the story (Hey Jude, Velcro Fly, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, etc).

Ah, yes. The score to There Will Be Blood was very well done. I could see the same type of music working for The Dark Tower. Although, I imagine TDT would end up being several films and not one (at least I hope) and I wonder if they could keep the same conductor on for all of them?

Yes, he did the soundtrack and scoring for There Will Be Blood and I think he did a great job of it. He would be an excellent choice to do DT, but he'd be third on my list behind Bill Frisell and Marc Ribot. Both of them have the exact sensibilities needed for a project like this. Frisell particularly.

I'm not familiar with the other guys, but There Will be Blood is really reminding me of Tull, crazy preacher and all. Johnny would definitely work for me in regards to the Gunslinger aspect of the movie- if they start out where King did (which I hope they do).

As a guitar player, I 'd VERY HIGHLY recommend both of those guys. To me they are the two best living guitar players. They will open up for you whole new perspectives on what can be done with the instrument. If and when you decide to give them a listen, let me know and I will point you in the right direction as their catalogs are vast and widely varied.

Okay, I'm a huge dork.
*ahem*
Now that we have that out of the way, I can say that I love putting music to scenes or characters in a story. For some reason, it sort of completes their existence in my mind. I came up with a mini-playlist based on Roland, and am working on Eddie right now.

If anyone else is a huge music dork out there, let me know your ideas on music that explains the character or sets the feeling...whatever!! Explain however much or little you'd like. I'm all ears!

"Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake: the lyrics fit Roland, but the beat seems too..well...upbeat. I'm curious, what's your playlist for Roland?

"Master of Puppets" is a favorite of mine for the actual Tower.

ladykatherine

OooOOooo that's a really good one for the Tower!! I haven't thought about that. hmmm...hahaha. Really cool.

I don't have very many for Roland, seeing as it probably started because I can never narrow myself down in anything...hehehehe.

1. "Run" by Snow Patrol
2. "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas
3. "When You Were Young" by The Killers
4. "Wonderwall" by Oasis
5. "Leave This Life" by The Gufs
6. "When The Stars Go Blue" by The Corrs
7. "Kissing Families" by Silversun Pickups
8. "Four Winds" by Bright Eyes
9. "Breathe" by Nickelback
10. "I Guess You're Right" by The Posies

Okayyyy, are you up for an explanation on each? I actually have them! :excited: But I'll definitely leave that up to how much you want to read...hehehe.

COLLECTIVE SOUL:

Has our conscience shown?
Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on.
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don't know why.

Are we listening?
Hymns of offering.
Have we eyes to see?
Love is gathering.
All the words that I've been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding
Into one.

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down.
'Cause it's the world I know.
It's the world I know.

WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG, The Killers:

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch him now, here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagine when you were young

Can we climb this mountain? I don't know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
That's thinking easy, easy now, watch it go

We're burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the Devil's water, it ain't so sweet
You don't have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet in
Every once and a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes

He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagine when you were young
(talks like a gentleman)
(like you imagine)
When you were young

I said he doesn't look a thing like Jesus
He doesn't look a thing like Jesus
But more than you'll ever know..

**These were written for this book, I KNOW IT! But I don't think the full effect can be had 'less you actually hear the song...

I am also one who does not listen to anything other than instrumental music when I am reading. I highly suggest the soundtrack to the television show Firefly. It captures the western sci-fi feel of all of the novels very well. Do not, however, get the soundtrack to the film Serenity. It's done by a completely different composer who had no idea what the feel of a sci-fi western was all about.

I was going to bring up King Crimson as well :)

If there's ever a DT movie, there's got to be at least some reference to King Crimson in it IMO.
Eddie and Harry shooting up while listening to "21st Century Schizoid Man", "In the court of the Crimson King", or "Red" would be great!
Can't remember when Eddie was drawn though

I heard this today driving and it made me want to run back home and finish reading book 6 (and no, im still not done...)

"Hurt"--Johnny Cash

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

I just finished reading TDT for the first time. As such I suppose it stands to reason that, musically, I associate it with something fairly new.

While reading Pere Callahan's telling of his travelling days I was listening to the Metallica track "All Nightmare Long", the lyrics and tone of which resonating perfectly with the can-toi's dogged and terrifying hunt for the aging Vampire slayer.

From the same album "The Unforgiven III" put me in mind of Roland's equally dogged and terrifying hunt for the Dark Tower itself. "Is he the one causing pain with his careless dreaming?"

Also, as it is quoted at the front of book VII, Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" jumps to mind.

When I read "The man in black fled across the desert............."

I couldn't help thinking of

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...

I think "Outlaw Torn" by Metallica reflects Roland and his whole relationship with The Tower pretty nicely

And now I wait my whole lifetime
For you
And now I wait my whole lifetime
For you

I ride the dirt I ride the tide
For you
I search the outside search inside
For you

To take back what you left me
I know I'll always burn to be
The one seeks so I may find
And now I wait my whole lifetime

Outlaw of torn
Outlaw of torn
And I'm torn

So on I wait my whole lifetime
For you
So on I wait my whole lifetime
For you

The more I search the more my need
For you
The more I bless the more I bleed
For you

You make me smash the clock and feel
I'd rather die behind the wheel
Time was never on my side
So on I wait my whole lifetime

Outlaw of torn
Outlaw of torn
Outlaw of torn
And I'm torn

Hear me
And if I close my mind in fear
Please pry it open
See me
And if my face becomes sincere
Beware
Hold me
And when I start to come undone
Stitch me together
Save me
And when you see me strut
Remind me of what left this outlaw torn

Hear me
And if I close my mind in fear
Please pry it open
See me
And if my face becomes sincere
Beware
Hold me
And when I start to come undone
Stitch me together
And when you see me strut
Remind me of what left this outlaw torn

I also think of "The God That Failed" by Metallica to sum up the relationship between Roland and Jake in The Gunslinger with the whole letting him drop.

"I see faith in your eyes
never you heard the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
broken is the promise, betrayal
the healing hand held back by the deepened nail
follow the god that failed...

and
" find your peace
find your say
find the smooth road in your way
trust you gave
a child to save
left you cold and him in grave
it feeds
it grows
it clouds all that you will know
deceit
deceive
decide just what you believe"

Oldie thread, but I remember wanting to post about music/DT a while ago and I might as well now. I'm on a forum binge! :)

I think the album I listened to the most on purpose during the last book was this one: () by Sigur Ros

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8d/Sigurros%28%29.jpg

There were a lot of other songs and albums that went along with the series for me too. Another one was Third by Portishead. The last few lines, "Stand, stand, damned one" in the song "Threads" are especially spooky and perfect for the mood of the book.

I feel like I'm already starting to forget some of the ones I was going to mention...I eventually made a playlist so that I would remember at least a few of them:

Just a couple of quick ones. I might do more later. When I read the scene where Roland and Cuthbert ride up to Rhea's hut I always hear "Bad Horsie" by Steve Vai. One song that's not really connected to any part of the books, but every time I hear it I see a Eddie/Susannah loviedovie montage is "Lost" by Now Available In Stereo. (yeah, so maybe i'm biased on that one, but it wasn't intended when it was written, and that's what i see when i listen to it these days):orely:

I've been listening to Beck for a long time. One of his songs, "lazy flies", sticks in my head whenever I read the DT. It's so complicated in its chord structure and sounds western and medieval at the same time. Not only that but the imagery of the lyrics may well be speaking about Roland's quest. I think it's pretty cool when things serendipitously match up like that.

Does anyone else have something similar?

Lazy flies all hovering above
The magistrate, he puts on his gloves
And he looks to the clouds
All pink and disheveled
There must be some blueprints,
Some creed of the devil
Inscribed in our minds
A hideous game
Vanishes in thin air
The vanity of slaves
Who wants to be there?
To sweep the debris
To harness dead-horses
To ride in the sun
A life of confessions
Written in the dust
Out in the mangroves
The mynah birds cry
In the shadows of sulfur
The trawlers drift by
They're chewing dried meat
in a House of disrepute
The dust of opiates
And syphilis patients
On brochure vacations
Fear has a glare that traps you
Like searchlights
The puritans stare
Their souls are fluorescent
The skin of a robot
Vibrates with pleasure
Matrons and gigolos
Carouse in the parlor
Their hand-grenade eyes
Impotent and blind
A hideous stain
Vanishes in thin air
The vanity of slaves
Who wants to be there?
To sweep the debris
To harness dead horses
To ride in the sun

This song has always reminded me of DT, mainly because it's about a Wizard and the building of his Tower.

Rainbow ~ Stargazer

High noon
Oh I'd sell my soul for water
Nine years' worth
Of breakin' my back
There's no sun in the shadow of the wizard
See how he glides
Why he's lighter than air
Oh I see his face

Where is your star
Is it far, Is it far, is it far
When do we leave
I believe, yes, I believe

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
Just to see him fly
So many die

We built a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
Just to see him fly
Don't know why
Now where do we go

Hot wind moving fast across the desert
We feel that our time has arrived
The world spins while we put his wing together
A tower of stone to take him straight to the sky
Oh I see his face

Where is your star
It is far, is it far, is it far
When do we leave, yeah
I believe, I believe

All eyes see the figure of the wizard
As he climbs to the top of the world
No sound as he falls instead of rising
Time standing still
Then there's blood on the sand
Oh I see his face

Where was your star
Was it far, was it far
When did we leave
We believe, we believe, we believe

In the heat and rain
With whips and chains
To see him fly
So many die
We built a tower of stone
With out flesh and bone
To see him fly
But why, it don't rain
With all our chains,
Did so many die
Just to see him fly
Look at my flesh and bone
Now look, look, look, look
Look at this tower of stone
I see a rainbow rising
Look there on the horizon
And I'm coming home
Coming home, I'm coming home

Time is standing still
He gave me back my will
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Going home
I'm going home
My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is weeping
We still hope, we still hope, oh
Take me back
He gave me back my will
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Going home
I'm going home
My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is weeping
We still hope, we still hope, oh

Take me back, take me back
Back to my home, oh, oh...

Agreed Letti - it's amazing - maybe the most authentic effort I've seen at depicting Roland (from ANY source).

Every time I read Wolves of the Calla, I can't help but think of Iron Maiden's Dance of Death for the reason as I bought both on the same day. So when I was reading WOTC, the CD just kept playing and playing.

Another thing I was thinking, for the film (which they will make now) should they use some of the Demons and Wizards songs? I know a score, and some of the songs crucial to the book (Hey Jude, Velcro Fly, etc) should be used for sure.

It is the most accurate depiction in my mind. This photo is a great interpretation, mostly for his no color shirt and pants (which I think all of the book art misses).

As for where I got it... random internet search.. I've been trying to track down the artist and find out if they have more. I believe it was painted digitally using drawing software, but I don't know for sure.

If someone finds out who painted it please let me know.

Since June I have been working on a score based on the novels... I recently finished the first of seven parts, The Gunslinger, and I released it digitally just now: http://www.last.fm/music/Hopes+Were+High/The+Dark+Tower+I%3A+The+Gunslinger

I tried my best putting in the feeling of calm epic that surrounds the first novel, along with some good melodies that follow through the 50 minutes of material. What do you think?

How many hours did you spend working on them?

I am sorry but in some days this thread will be merged with the Dark Tower music and such thread.

I know what you mean. Honestly I had to restrain myself from putting in more action from time to time... but I still feel the first book is quite slow and calm until the end, with Jake's death and so on.

I don't know how many hours I put in... a lot? :) Five days a week, two-five hours a time, since June. And perhaps three more hours of cut material.

So I am in a band called The Color of May and we just released a song entitled "King" which is based on "The Dark Tower" series. We were approached by a man who had a studio and he asked if we wanted to record a free song ,we said yes and felt it would be a great time to get this song done. You can download it for free. For what is right thank Mr. King for what is wrong blame me. The Dark Tower is the best novel series ive ever read. I love it and I hope you enjoy my tribute. Thanks!

Check it out at: www.myspace.com/thecolorofmay

Again its called "King". Let us know what you think!

it does?

a song about the alleged turmoil of being a rock star fits with the Dark Tower?

very interesting :orely:

this is precisely why i think that if there has to be a dark tower movie, the music needs to be an instrumental score by someone, and by someone, i mean john zorn.

I've played guitar in bands for almost 9 years now and have become a teacher, coaching young and old hopefuls alike how to play guitar and bass. But the one thing i have always wanted to do is write orchestral/soundtrack stuff for films, TV or video games. So i have been playing around a little with playing some piano and layering some more classical instruments together.

The video i have linked here is of a song i have recently put together called 'The Fall of Gilead' which is my first ever fan made composition. It is supposed to set the scene of the aftermath of Farson's destruction of Roland's childhood home. It is written in a way where it sounds melancholic but also defiant and regal. I am posting this up here to see what other DT nuts think of it and do they feel the approriate vibe that's supposed to be coming across.

Your comments will mean a lot to me in these early stages of experimentation. If all goes well i would like to compose a soundtrack album based on the Dark Tower series. Exploring key scenes and the emotions played out through the music.

SO yeah, let me know what you think! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji-nQd7sHqc

My friend this is gorgeous! If I had only had this music the past 72 hours while painting DT stuff it would have put me in the perfect mood!

As a huge fan of movie scores (I own upwards of 400 of them. Small change to some) I see wonderful similarities to scores by James Newton Howard and Clint Mansell in your piece here.

If you put a ninety-nine cent price tag on this track on iTunes I'd download it immediately.

Post more when you finish them! I'm going to keep my eye on this thread!

Thank you darkwolf! Very kind of you to say so. I use Logic 9 pro through an iMac. The program i used on this track Garritan personal orchestra through a standard midi keyboard.
I am looking into scoring material for a proper string quartet to give me a more organic sound, but the beauty of this program is that i get to do a mock up and understand how the parts would work before doing the final score. Extremely cool program.

What am i listening to? Been listening to a lot of Danny Elfman recently, love the creepy, childish quality to his music. Also, as always, listening to my Chopin piano sonatas and Elgar's Cello concerto. That's awesome man! I'm gonna eventually learn this stuff... I've done some pretty crappy stuff on FL Studio. Well... I'd come up with the melodies and stuff and then my friend would arrange it on FL because I don't know how to use any of those programs. I did a track with him that we synced up to the Watchmen trailer, that's the closest I've come to creating the beginning of a score... If I can find the youtube link to it, I'll post it!

Hey folks, i am back with another piece for the Unofficial Dark Tower soundtrack as promised. This piece is centered around the time just before Roland comes into Susan's life. The mood is sombre and introspective to begin with, symbolizing Susan's worries and frustrations. The mood then changes as a she finds her first true love, completely uplifting.
Let me know your thoughts as they are always very welcome to read. :huglove:

When Jake died I felt extremely sad for Oy. I kept thinking about "bittersweet" by Within Temptation, as I imagined that sometime he 'd finally be with poor Oy again. The song came immediately in my mind because they used it for the clip of the original Hathico film (I adore dogs and Oy is more like a dog for me)

Although I have my objections to this part of the story, when Suzannah met with alternative Eddie in New York of 1987 I couldn't get a lyric out of my mind: "what seems like an interlude now, could be the beginning of love" and "time is like a dream..."

I'd noticed some people had posted links to some of their Dark Tower-inspired music, so I thought I'd do the same!

I've written two instrumental piano & violin pieces, both inspired by King's magnum opus in their own way.

YouTube- Pearl Jam - You Are

This broken wheel is coming undone
And the roads exploding
But you're keeping me strong
Rolling along with you,...

Love is a tower
And you're the key
Leading me higher
When you let me in

Keeping us close,... so close
On down the line

Sometimes I burn like a dot on the sun
With no one knowing
But you're keeping me strong
Rolling along with you

You are a tower of
Strength to me
The darkening hour
Sees light again

Ooh wah, ooh wah, you are...

Love is a tower
Of strength to me
I am the shoreline
But you're the sea

You are.

These are all great! But I think The Gunslinger is probably the best one of them all. Good variety of instruments, and it's very western-ish. Which is good. The only real criticism I have is that on Lud: The God Drums, I was kindof expecting a little bit more imposing beat, something with a lot more force, since this was supposed to echo across the land, and maybe even a little distortion since these speakers have been blasting night after night for King knows how long so I'm sure they're a little worn out.

But yeah, these are good! It's always cool to hear DT music. (Also, I did like your take on the Man In Black's theme, it was very different from what most people would've tried, but I liked it.)

Thought I'd throw in my two cents worth while I'm sitting here at work ;-)

Blaze of Glory was just on the radio again, and it once more struck me as a song that always reminds me of the Dark Tower & Roland every time I hear it. I guess the comparison is simple enough with the western theme. The similar Dead or Alive from the same movie/soundtrack is also a favorite.

I listened to Chris Cornell's solo album Euphotia Morning a lot way back when on one of my 1st readings of W&G so many of the songs on that album remind me of parts of the book and that time. I'll be happy to post some music when I'm home and not restricted by the work comp, lol (hey, I'm on a 14 1/2 hour shift, gotta do something with my time!)

I always heard Bullets by Creed reading Wolves of Calla but i think it is appropriate for the series

Walking around I hear the sounds of the earth seeking relief
I'm trying to find a reason to live
But the mindless clutter my path
Oh these thorns in my side
Oh these thorns in my side
I know I have something free
I have something so alive
I think they shoot cause they want it
I think they shoot cause they want it
I think they shoot cause they want it

I feel forces all around me
Come on raise your head
Those who hide behind the shadows
Live with all that's dead

Look at me... look at me
At least look at me when you shoot a bullet through my head
Through my head
Through my head
Through my head

In my lifetime when I'm disgraced
By jealousy and lies
I laugh aloud 'cause my life
Has gotten inside someone else's mind

Look at me... look at me
At least look at me when you shoot a bullet through my head
Through my head
Through my head
Through my head

Hey all I want is what's real
Something I touch and can feel
I'll hold it close and never let it go
Said why... why do we live this life
With all this hate inside
I'll give it away 'cause I don't want it no more
Please help me find a place
Somewhere far away
Yes, I'll go and you'll never see me again

Hi,

I have been reading some of the posts on this site about my music and thought it fair to weigh in.

I'm glad some people are still talking about it. It's been on iTunes and Amazon for a while. I'd thought everyone forgot, especially since Twilight-Land.com went bye bye a couple of years ago and I started distributing my music via Rhapsody and other music sites.

I get the royalties but I don't hear too much talk. Anyway, I appreciate it, the chatter and whatnot. The second CD is still half finished, has been for at least four years, before I went off and traveled the world via the Navy.

If you wish, I can post some of the unreleased Drawing of the Three clips on YouTube for you...

The song that always makes me thing of DT is The Humbling River by Puscifer:

Nature, nurture, heaven and home
Sum of all and by them driven
To conquer every mountain shown
But I've never crossed the river

Braved the forest braved the stone
Braved the icy winds and fire
Braved and beat them on my own
Yet I'm helpless by the river

Angel, angel what have I done?
I've faced the quakes the wind, the fire
I've conquered country, crown, and throne
Why can't I cross this river?

Pay no mind to the battles you've won
It'll take a lot more than rage and muscle
Open your heart and hands my son
Or you'll never make it over the river

It'll take a lot more that words and guns
A whole lot more than riches and muscle
The hands of the many must join as one
And together we'll cross the river

I'm just going to postwhore here and say that J.R. Flynn (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/member.php?u=9146) is now a member here, and if you have not heard his DT inspired scores, you NEED to (Letti, I'm talking to you!).

The Piano Medley is especially cool!

Seriously, Fanfare (Roland's Theme) is spot on, IMHO. I've had a sneak preview of his latest, and all I can say is I hope he finds the time to put it out. I LOVE his stuff. Check it out!

ETA: Just saw his post above - you all need to listen to his stuff! Seriously! (Yeah, I'm a huge fan, sue me. :D)

I'm quite biased as I am a HUGE fan of his work. He was kind enough to give me snippets of his interpretation of The Drawing of the Three and frankly, I'm on the edge of my seat with pompons raised, waiting for the finished product. :D x = 1000

I truly think he "gets it". :D

And, I just postwhored my love for him all over Amazon.

I can do that.

More on topic, I find the songs Blackened, by Metallica, and the Jimi Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower, written by Bob Dylan, remind me a lot of the series. The end of Blackened reminds me of the very end of the series, when Roland realizes hes looping back to the desert. All Along the Watchtower just generally has the same mood as the series, IMO. And it really doesn't have anything to do with the name :)

I never before made the connection, but recently listening to Red Right Hand by Nick Cave kind of gives off an image, here are some of the lyrics:

Take a litle walk to the edge of town
Go across the tracks
Where the viaduct looms,
like a bird of doom
As it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires,
in the humming wires
Hey man, you know
you're never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge,
past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm comes
a tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat with
a red right hand

He'll wrap you in his arms,
tell you that you've been a good boy
He'll rekindle all the dreams
it took you a lifetime to destroy
He'll reach deep into the hole,
heal your shrinking soul
Hey buddy, you know you're
never ever coming back
He's a god, he's a man,
he's a ghost, he's a guru
They're whispering his name
through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
is a red right hand

The first verse makes me think of Lud, or rather, just before they reach it, as the bridge they cross is falling apart (shifts and cracks) the 'humming wires' sounds like the slo trans underground engine.

Its hard to determine if the person refereed to in this song could be either Roland or Flagg, as Roland is tall and handsome, and I assume wears a dusty black coat, where as Flagg, who creates 'the gathering storm', could also be The Red Kings 'red right hand'.

Obviously its not about the Dark Tower, its just cool you can associate it with the imagery.
Anyone else know any good tunes that have possible DT connections besides the obvious songs by Demons and Wizards?

'Cause there's a place in the sun

*SPOILERS THROUGH THE END OF DARK TOWER 3: WASTELANDS*

So my cousin and I made a "pilgrimage" to the actual Dark Tower in New York city. we took all kinds of pictures of the Turtle Bay area and the Tower at 2 Hammerskjold Plaza. It was fun and neat to see all these places in real life. nothing new though, plenty of people have done this.

The address of the Hammerskjold Plaza is the corner of 46th and 2nd avenue. I am a major fan of the band Tool. They have a song called 46 and 2, which some have speculated on the meaning of this song, but none of it sounds correct. The songwriter, Maynard J. Keenan, is notoriously silent and cryptic on the meanings of his songs. So we naturally got excited to see that perhaps there was a connection between this band and the Tower. The question became, when was this address introduced in the book and when did the band write the song?

As it turns out, the address first appears in DT3: Wastelands. In fact, when Jake's mind is split, the song of the rose is what calms him for a brief time and leads him to the vacant lot. Up till this point, Jake is literally going insane. So after re-reading this part of the book and then going back and reading the lyrics to "46 and 2", the whole entire song seems to be about Jake himself.

here is a link to the lyrics: 46 and 2 (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Forty-Six-2-lyrics-Tool/BD10B1399B095FFD48256A57002C8E41) for those who dont know the song.

There really is so much in there that relates to Jake in that exact moment of the story when his mind is split, and he needs to find the door to his REAL life, his right life.

anyway, if you are a fan of both, this cannot be ignored.

I love this song....but it is cleary about the evolution of man kind....and stepping through your shadow self (as Carl Jung explains in his theory). Not being an internet loser and shooting you down, cause who knows...but it's pretty widely believed.

Check out the song by Billy Talent called "surrender" it always reminds me of Roland and his quest for the Tower

and i mean, you could even pull all of that into it if you really wanted. 46 and 2, elightened consciousness, "super human" being... coincidental that a representation of the nexus of all existence is at that matching address?

BROWNINGS CHILDE
11-24-2010, 09:15 PM
I think the evolution theory has pretty definitively been nailed down as the idea behind the song. Especially given Danny's beliefs in sacred geometry. This theory is outlined in a book the band recommended on their 1994 newsletter called Nothing in This Book is True, but It's Exactly How Things Are by Bob Frissell.

According to this book, in order for any new species to come about, a new geometric plane must be produced. Also, according to this book a new plane (the "Christ-Consciousness" plane) was created in 1989. This would allow the human race to evolve to the 46 and 2 chromosomal level, and provide "Us" with christlike powers.

Although the address is interesting. It's kinda cool to think of the song from that perspective.

So after finishing the series a couple weeks ago I felt it was finally time to man up and join this forum. The Dark Tower is hands down my favorite series out of any other books I've read, and I love the music so I got to thinking. If you could choose a theme song for the series what would it be.

Personally I'd choose Bad Company - Bad Company,
the song brings chills to my spine every time I hear it after reading the books, it makes me think of Roland and his ka-tet every time. Some other songs I thought were worth bringing up were..
Turn the Page - Bob Segar,
Gods Gonna Cut you Down - Johnny Cash
and after learning about Roland's loop I'd make the opening song to the series.. Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown - The Rolling Stones

What songs would you choose?

Johnny Cash's 'Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o22eIJDtKho)' is probably the most thematically fitting song for Roland's journey, but for obvious reasons the filmmakers should definitely try to find a way to incorporate King Crimson's 'In the Court of the Crimson King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGQHL0t_uyU)'. Not to mention The Beatles' 'Hey Jude (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDdI7GhZSQA)' and ZZ Top's 'Velcro Fly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6VIuQbjDEQ)', which are already woven into the story.

I agree with "hey jude" & "velcro fly" woven into the story, and they should be in the movie, but.. ..not as a theme song.
I still think "Hurt" would have the most impact.
Roland's quest at all cost. Think of his long long painful journey, just imagine sound bits inserted here and there, but the final realization at the end. Can't say anymore.

I was listening to Kenny Rodger's song "The Gambler" (you know the one that goes "gotta know when to hold em' and when to fold them," " know when to walk away and when to run") All of a sudden I thought Hey instead of "Gambler" insert "Gunslinger" into the title.

Instead of the "know when to hold them" somehow incorporate the Gunslinger litany("I do not shoot with my eye" and so on.)
I could actually hear Kenny Rodgers himself singing these lyrics inside my head! I think this would make a cool theme song, what do you guys think?

Good call!

"Behind Blue Eyes"

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you

No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

"Highwayman"

I was a highwayman. Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side.
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive.

I was a sailor. I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide.
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still.

I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below.
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around
...I'll always be around...and around and around and
around and around

I'll fly a starship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can.
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again...

"Galileo"

Galileo's head was on the block: The crime was looking up for truth,
And as the bombshells of my daily fears explode I try to trace them to my youth.
And then you had to bring up reincarnation
Over a couple of beers the other night,
And now I'm serving time for mistakes
Made by another in another lifetime.

How long till my soul gets it right?
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light?
I call on the resting soul of Galileo;
King of night vision, King of insight.

And then I think about my fear of motion
Which I never could explain:
Some other fool across the ocean years ago
Must have crashed his little airplane!

How long till my soul gets it right?
Can any human being ever reach that kind of light?
I call on the resting soul of Galileo;
King of night vision, King of insight.

I'm not making a joke; you know me, I take everything so seriously.
If we wait for the time till all souls get it right
Then at least, I know there'll be no nuclear annihilation
In my lifetime, I'm still not right!

I offer thanks to those before me. That's all I've got to say.
'Cause maybe you squandered big bucks in your lifetime,
Now I have to pay.
But then again it feels like some sort of inspiration
To let the next life off the hook.
But she'll say, "Look what I had to overcome from my last life!
I think, I'll write a book."

How long till my soul gets it right?
Can any human being ever reach the highest light?
Except for Galileo, God rest his soul!
King of night vision, King of insight.

Hi everybody. I'm a novice in the forum (it's my first post) and in the quest of Roland (I've just finished The gunslinger). I discovered the book after listening to "Touched by the Crimson King", by Demons and Wizards, a kind of conceptual album with some tracks inspired by The Dark Tower.

For some reason, for me, this song brings brings to mind the epic yet personal themes/visions of the Dark Tower (especially the bit at ~2:30 and ~4:30 through to the end):

(It works well with Metropolis, too. I hadn't seen this video before, was just looking for the song to post.)

P.S. - This track is from Trent Reznor, AKA Nine Inch Nails, the guy who wrote 'Hurt' (and many other amazing songs).

I listened to the Neil Young album "On The Beach" a little after reading The Drawing of the Three, and call me crazy, but I actually noticed a lot of connections. I'm not saying I think Stephen King was inspired by Neil, but it is interesting for anyone who's heard the album. Right off the bat, the book takes place half on a beach. Here's what else I noticed:

"Walk On" - The second verse seems to describe Eddie's old life as a heroin addict with Henry: "I remember the good old days, stayed up all night gettin' crazed, then the money was not so good, but we still did the best we could".

"See The Sky About To Rain" - One line goes "I was down in Dixie Land" (the south), where Odetta was before she was drawn. The chorus references a train, and Odetta took a train to New York as a young girl (and, of course, the next book gives us Charlie the Choo-Choo and Blaine).

"For The Turnstiles" - Two important events in Drawing happen in the subway station, and I think the turnstiles are mentioned. Both of those events involve Jack Mort, who was a businessman at an accounting firm, and the lyrics reference businessmen ("pimps with tailors who charge ten dollars at the door).

"On The Beach" - Besides the beach connection I already mentioned, the song begins with "The world is turning, I hope it don't turn away", which I think reflects the "stop the world from moving on" theme of the whole series.

"Motion Pictures" - Many references are made to movies in Drawing, especially by Eddie, who I think explains them to Roland as "moving pictures" or something like that. The view through the doors reminds Eddie of movies.

"Ambulance Blues" - An ambulance takes Odetta to the hospital after she loses her legs on the subway tracks (although despite what Neil Young says in the song, this ambulance did go fast enough). The song's melancholy mood and the line "it's easier to get buried in the past when you try to make a good thing last" reflects Roland's nostalgic view of the old time and his long-gone friends.

Who else here has listened to "On The Beach"? I'd love to hear any other thoughts on this!

Carry the Blessed Home - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub1cBcHQpzA

You may also like Nightwish, who have one DT song to contribute:

7 Days to the Wolves - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro0R_MxwwRs

There are quite a few others with at least one song to contribute. This will focus more on the metal side of things, other genres can be found in the second part of my post below.

A band called Nostradameus and their Randall Flagg song:

If anyone was interested in a list of all the songs in the series here is an article (http://io9.com/every-last-song-from-stephen-kings-dark-tower-series-c-1601378646)
Thanks for the link! Interestingly, this article has led me to discover specifically made DT music (thanks to one of the comments/replys to said article). And also led me to discover this playlist - http://indigoxix.wordpress.com/2014/01/18/the-ultimate-dark-tower-playlist/

Previously DT inspired music seemed mostly limited to the genre of metal (see above). However, this list has expanded the music styles very nicely.

Some of my favorites include:

Heinrich XIII and the Devilgrass Pickers – In a World That Has Moved On

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHOLzvYubHU

Bright Giant – Jake & the Gunslinger

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5wJbT2yhFM

Daisy Blue Gröff (Daisy Blue) – Gunslinger

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-JvbJQqbQY

Barnheart - Come Come Commala

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN0TxDa-SX8

Aiming for Aurora - The Way Station - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEOM_aAbJuA

The Thick – Big Coffin Hunters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T56FGc5VwYQ

Gang of Thieves – Gunslinger - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PdrgYZNsXk

The Dropa Stone – Other Worlds Than These – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJd87e_kFKA

The Dukes – Low Men – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17X5yN6fASw

Bright Giant - Kings & Queens of Air - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGAB2G5vjqs

I'm a sucka for any DT related music! There are a few more songs/albulms mentioned in the comments section of the original article and in the link I've provided if anyone wants a look.

Edit: Not sure if this counts, it's more of a Stand song, but you could lump it in thanks to Wizard and Glass:

The Alarm - The Stand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPnc_RKjd-U

Bob Dylan's Knockin' On Heaven's Door. This came up on my iPod shortly after I finished the series and I almost fell off my bike! The lyrics seem to evoke the end of the series; of course they could fit pretty much any Western story in which the hero dies in the end, except for that last line, which seems so clearly about Roland that I can hardly believe it was written in 1973.

Come put these guns on the ground
I can't shoot them any more
The sun is going down
And I believe I'm knocking on heaven's door

Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door

Come wipe these tears from my eyes
I can't shed them any more
The sun is setting in the western sky
People, I believe I must be knocking on heaven's door

Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door
Just like so many times before!

Hello everyone, I don't want to go too off topic here but I noticed that this was a music thread for The Dark Tower.

I've recently finished a diploma course on Audio Engineering and Post Production in Manchester. For my final piece I was asked to record, mix and master an album of my choice, be it myself or other musicians.
I decided to write the entire thing myself due to being in bands for many years and knowing the nature of herding musicians to important recording sessions. I think this worked in my favour.

It was mid course that I had decided that it was soundtracks and composing that I wanted to get into, so I decided why not kill two birds with one stone and get working on my first soundtrack piece so I can use it after I graduate. At the time I had just been introduced to The Dark Tower series by Stephen King and was pretty hooked straight away. It felt pretty natural to want to try and compose music to something which was so fresh in my mind.

I've uploaded the album to soundcloud and would love to hear feedback from anyone who has read the books or anyone who just loves soundtrack work in general.

Apologies to not being able to upload the tracks so they're playable here, soundcloud has disabled that feature.

Cheers!
