Last Minute's Recommendations

Dear friends, in the beginning of July (when I am back to Russia) I will merge this thread with Nikolett's Make Me Read Books, but let it be here till then, ok? The situation is rather peculiar, and I hope for your understanding.

Finding an affordable book in English here in St.Petersburg is a miracle that hardly ever happens; every time I go to Europe I rage through charity shops, used book stores and the like, and bring a suitcasefull of books back home; that's exactly what I am going to do now.

I need your advice, because I have noticed, reading your posts, that there are a lot of books and authors I have never even heard about. You have already introduced me to Palahniuk, and I believe there are other authors you could recommend that I look for first of all, when I go through those millions of cheap used (and light! weight is of primary importance, or the bear will be thrown out of the plane) editions.

I am currently reading Velocity by Dean Koontz. He is a pretty good author. John Grisham is good to.

We are now going through a period of total criminalization and lawlessness, though I am glad to say that there are some signs of it being less pronounced with every year... some laws are already beginning to work, so I hope soon I'll be able to send and receive things without fear that they will be stolen.

A Widow for One Year - John Irving
The Memory of Running - Ron McLart
Jane Austen's Letters
Atonement - Ian McEwan

Also Lois Lowry has a good trilogy out in paperback - it's technically adolescent literature, but very, very good. The first in the series is called The Giver.

Well, I can highly recommend either of Joe Hill's two books; Heart Shaped Box and the short story collection 20th Century Ghosts. They were both great!

I absolutely hate Cormac McCarthy, although I'll admit I only ever read Blood Meridian for a class, and it was so bad I put it down halfway through and took the crappy grade. I absolutely could not stand it. However, some people love his stuff, so your mileage may vary. :)

Jean, John Irving wrote a TON of books, most notably The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire. I have only read the one so far, but I am definitely going to read more of his stuff. It's very good.

I'd also recommend Iain M Banks Culture books (sci fi with intelligence) and Terry Pratchett's Discworld books (very satirical and humorous).

I think they have been translated; I never read in translation what I can read in original, so during those years I managed to collect all seven! The sixth and the seventh were presents from my students who happened to go abroad and get them before I had a chance to.

I've had candy sent here. I know other foods are imported regularly for personal use. I'm sure there is a way to import alcohol too although it could theoretically be stopped at customs.

He also writes fiction under the shorter name Iain Banks too. Read a few of them and have enjoyed them but really prefer his sci fi novels.

Actually I believe there were 7 books in the box, including a 1902 edition of
The South Sea Tales by Jack London. I hope you approve it, it is a wonderful story! Also some small trinkets for your wife and the most excellent Mrs F.

it's easy to remember her name - she is Helen, just like Miss Finkelstein. It's that Twinner thing. I also have two Alexanders, one in London, one here in St.Petersburg. (hopefully, the London one is going to marry the London Helen)
