View Full Version : Last Minute's Recommendations
Dear friends, in the beginning of July (when I am back to Russia) I will merge this thread with Nikolett's Make Me Read Books, but let it be here till then, ok? The situation is rather peculiar, and I hope for your understanding.
Finding an affordable book in English here in St.Petersburg is a miracle that hardly ever happens; every time I go to Europe I rage through charity shops, used book stores and the like, and bring a suitcasefull of books back home; that's exactly what I am going to do now.
I need your advice, because I have noticed, reading your posts, that there are a lot of books and authors I have never even heard about. You have already introduced me to Palahniuk, and I believe there are other authors you could recommend that I look for first of all, when I go through those millions of cheap used (and light! weight is of primary importance, or the bear will be thrown out of the plane) editions.
I already know that I am certainly going to hunt for:
1. Duma Key
2. Rage - sent by sweet Lady Linda http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_wub.gif
3. Roadwork - ditto, thank you thank you thank you! http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_wub01.gif
4. Gunslinger Revised
5. Cell - bought a cheap paperback used copy at Camden Lock
6. Palahniuk: Fight Club - bought
7. Palahniuk: Choke
8. Philip Pullman - recommended by Brice
9. The Children of Men by P. D. James - Alexander happened to have it at home
10. Joe Hill: Heart-Shaped Box - sent by Lady Linda http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bearheart.gif
11-13. Neil Gaiman: American Gods, Neverwhere, Fragile Things - recommended by OchrisO
14. The 13 1/2 lives of captain bluebear - being sent by Lisa http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bearheart.gif
15. Joe Hill: 20th Century Ghosts - recommended by Heather19 and Brice
16. Palahniuk: Lullaby - ditto
17-19. Michael Crichton: Jurassic Park, Lost World, Andromeda Strain - ditto
20. Iain M Banks Culture books - recommended by blackrose22
21. Anything by Douglas Adams - recommended by LadyHitchhiker
22 - 23. John Irving: The World According to Garp; The Hotel New Hampshire - recommended by Daghain
24. Christopher Moore - sent by turtlesong
25. Blaze - bought
26. George R.R. Martin: A Song of Fire and Ice (beginning with A Game of Thrones) - recommended by Aballah
27. Alexandra Fuller: Don't Let's Go To The Dogs Tonight - recommended by Ruthful and ladysai
any suggestions are very welcome! it's not a matter of guessing what I might or might not like (it's hardly possible with humans; even less so with bears), but just tell me what books you think shouldn't be missed.

I am currently reading Velocity by Dean Koontz. He is a pretty good author. John Grisham is good to.

have you ever read anything by christopher moore? i'm not sure what kind of books you like but i find him hilarious. irreverant, witty, more than a little insane.
where are you now? i'd be happy to send you some books to take back with you. then i wouldn't have to take them back to the bookseller and they would have a good home. tell me what you like and we could go through me collection. does that sound good?
i can ship you paperbacks to russia. i don't mind. how expensive can it be?

*puts thinking cap on* Jean darling
there are just so many to choose from
I will think of imperative selections!
When do you leave for London?
turtlesong: don't ship to Russia, it isn't safe! thank you so very much for offering that http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif
I love everything that is hilarious (both reverend and irreverend, sane or insane)
what are the authors/titles you are going to take back to the bookseller?
::a very interested bear::
Milissa: I tried Koontz only once, and was bored by his style; maybe the book wasn't the best. Which do you think are his best? you can post it here, or in our Koontz thread
Lady Linda: I am leaving May 31, if everything is ok, and coming back June 29. I'll be able to check our site from there, too (I hope)

for the answer to the book question, i am going to have to crawl into a couple of very big boxes. i will do that today and get you a list. just out of curiousity, why is it not safe to ship to russia? not safe for you or not safe for me? or not safe for the books?
not safe for the books. We are now going through a period of total criminalization and lawlessness, though I am glad to say that there are some signs of it being less pronounced with every year... some laws are already beginning to work, so I hope soon I'll be able to send and receive things without fear that they will be stolen.
by the way, did you already post your address in this thread (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=1299)? now that you, thank God, started posting, it is very important that you are accessible for your friends http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gifhttp://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif

Here's some from what I've read this year so far that I would recommend:
Water for Elephants - Susan Gruen
A Widow for One Year - John Irving
The Memory of Running - Ron McLart
Jane Austen's Letters
Atonement - Ian McEwan
Also Lois Lowry has a good trilogy out in paperback - it's technically adolescent literature, but very, very good. The first in the series is called The Giver.
thank you Irish Dawn!
we also have threads dedicated to Cormac McCarthy, Joe Hill and Michael Crichton; I've never read anything by any of them. Can those who liked them just confirm that they liked them (without details) and recommend something specifically? those who don't like them - please too, say if you don't like them

I absolutely hate Cormac McCarthy, although I'll admit I only ever read Blood Meridian for a class, and it was so bad I put it down halfway through and took the crappy grade. I absolutely could not stand it. However, some people love his stuff, so your mileage may vary. :)

Irish Dawn http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_wub.gif: judging by what I read in that thread, I might not be crazy about McCarthy, either; if I come across a book by him I'll leaf through first, of course.
I read J.Asten's letters - at least some of them - and I think John Irving is a familiar name, did he write anything very famous, too?
and thank you Brice and Karen for your Joe Hill enthusiasm, it's certainly something to go by

i'm getting ready to finalize my post of books but don't forget to check the bookmobile thread (since it was your idea too!). also, i'm putting a caveat on my bookmobile post that you get first dibs on all my paperbacks (trust me there are tons!).
since this is not a closed mb (i checked with matt since i couldn't find an answer anywhere) i'm not going to post my address in the list but i'm going to pm it to you and anyone else who wants it. i just can't have it floating around the interwebs with my real name attached.

I think they have been translated; I never read in translation what I can read in original, so during those years I managed to collect all seven! The sixth and the seventh were presents from my students who happened to go abroad and get them before I had a chance to.
I would also highly recommend Joe Hill. Both books are great, but I have to say I preferred 20th Century Ghosts, so if you come across that don't hesitate to pick it up.

05-22-2008, 04:01 AM
Oh, I am certain bribing works well there. It is just a matter of who and how much. ;) For the right amount a courier would personally lay the books in Jean's hand.
no, but it's not the Russian mob, it's that luggage weight is limited everywhere, I'm afraid... the bribe we're talking about is completely official and is called overweight fee, or whatever
Brice
05-22-2008, 04:04 AM
How much can the fee possibly be?
alinda
05-22-2008, 04:04 AM
Well we were both thinking it....why not Jean could it be easily arranged ?
I don't know how much; much, I am afraid, or Alexander wouldn't be so afraid of overweight every time he flies back and forth, and wouldn't implant such fear of same in me
I can always leave something at Alexander's, so it is gradually brought to Russia
maybe I won't have overweight? lady Linda, are you sending a ton of books??? http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_unsure.gif
Brice
05-22-2008, 04:13 AM
Well, if you don't know the amount, the fear of the overweight fee is pointless. It could be much less than you or Alexander expect it to be. It couldn't hurt much to make a call and ask.

oh, he knows, it's me who doesn't; I know it's much for him, so it's astonomic for me. I only think that it may not be a problem at all - it's books, not bricks, and I will hardly add any bricks to them myself http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/0134-bear.gif

Oh yes, in the US everyone is paid in gold bricks. Everyone who tells you otherwise is just plain lying.
you send me gold bricks then, and send you barrels of caviar and sable furs (they are everywhere, too; just like bears roaming the streets of Moscow. Slander! there's only one bear walking streets, and his bearwife, and they are both in St.Petersburg)

What? Am I to understand you are no longer concerned about overweight fees?
Send good vodka instead please. ;)
I am surprised that you would like to read the revised Gunslinger. Maybe my memory betrays me like usual..
Maybe. I never said I wasn't going to read it. I said I didn't want to, and I wouldn't buy an expensive copy. But I will buy a cheap copy if it's not heavy, because if I want to take part in those discussions, I got to read it.
What? Am I to understand you are no longer concerned about overweight fees?

I could always saw off a corner of one of them bricks to pay for overweight. http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_wink-1.gif
Is vodka allowed to be sent to the USA? I heard no food could be imported there by private persons?
Brice
05-22-2008, 04:51 AM
I've had candy sent here. I know other foods are imported regularly for personal use. I'm sure there is a way to import alcohol too although it could theoretically be stopped at customs.

sweet! now, not to make the bottles travel in a roundabout way and risk being broken, I'll try to send it after we have tested the possibility of sending things to/from here; we'll discuss it in all details in July

If you change your mind about Pullmans Northern Lights let me know and I'll send it to you. Glad to hear you've put Iain M Banks on your list as I think you will love his Culture books. He also writes fiction under the shorter name Iain Banks too. Read a few of them and have enjoyed them but really prefer his sci fi novels.

Actually I believe there were 7 books in the box, including a 1902 edition of
The South Sea Tales by Jack London. I hope you approve it, it is a wonderful story! Also some small trinkets for your wife and the most excellent Mrs F.
I included a envelope of Hidden Vally Ranch ( follow the directions to dressing bliss) and a small but darling birthday gift for you of course, may it bring you a measure of the happiness you give us each day :couple:

I am embarrased to admit I forgot your wifes name as
I was addressing a card to her, so I addressed it to Mrs Bear
I do hope she will find it humorous.

of course - she is Mrs Bear!
it's easy to remember her name - she is Helen, just like Miss Finkelstein. It's that Twinner thing. I also have two Alexanders, one in London, one here in St.Petersburg. (hopefully, the London one is going to marry the London Helen)

Is vodka allowed to be sent to the USA? I heard no food could be imported there by private persons?
I bought back two bottles of vodka with me. The customs guy saw it and didn't say anything.
*edit* but then again this was by train...not flight.

I know you earlier said you aren't interested in new series, but when you have the time, I highly reccomend George R.R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice saga, beginning with the book A Game of Thrones. It's midieval fantasy, but it's incredible.

It's a riveting memoir. There's even a sequel-of sorts-which focuses on her life as an adult. I haven't read that one yet though.
