okay. here's the deal. i have an entire library of non-sk books here. i have been going through them slowly (v-e-r-y-s-l-o-w-l-y) and deciding what i'm going to keep and what i'm going to take to the half price bookstore and sell.

so, is anyone interested in starting a revolving library of sorts of non-sk books? we could each make a list of what we have and post it here. then we could trade books back and forth, paying the postage ourselves (ex. i have XXXXXXX and mail it to YYYYYYY who mails me XXXXXXX). we could agree up front that all books would be shipped a specific way. i could do the research to find out how much it costs to post the average book in the us and across the pond (i've always wanted to say that!).

so what do you think? has anyone else suggested this? do you think it's a horrible idea and i should just crawl back into my shell?

i await your responses with bated breath.

p.s. i just created my very first topic with jean's help! :excited: thanks jean!

I like it. People who have read the book could also sign it before they post it onto the next person, so it becomes TDT.com memorabilia

jean - thanks for taking care of those other posts for me/us. and for pointing me in the right direction. you rock!

darkthoughts - that is a fantastic idea!!!!!!! i never even thought of having each person sign the book that they borrow. we could sign with our username or our real name (if that's how people here know us). when the book finally makes it back to the original owner for good (if it ever does, some books are just popular that way) it would be a real piece of history wouldn't it? imagine, having a copy of something in the big give signed by a dozen or more (19 maybe??) TDT members.
 :excited:

turtlesong: welcome! I am happy to have assisted at the birth of the idea, which seems to me magnificent, not only pragmatically beneficial and humanely touching, but also very very appropriate to our community, somehow expressing its very soul just as well as those great drawings do, or the postcard-sending tradition, or the Palaver Castle (you're very welcome there, by the way http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_wink-1.gif).

I dearly hope I will be able to participate, maybe sometimes, although, alas, not as frequently as others, due to that ungodly distance (Russia is too far from everywhere, I'm afraid http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_sad.gif)

:D With some books you get quite a few blank pages before and after the actual story...we could even leave a little message or whatever ;)

Ok, well I've read We Need To Talk About Kevin, so I'll put another book up for grabs:

The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Postage can maybe be at each members discretion, ie I never insure my parcels (when sending paperback trade editions) and usually go for the cheapest mailing option - but y'know, people can decide how they want to do it.

Then I guess, once someones finished with a book they can come in here and maybe recommend/review/rate it and put it up for grabs to the next reader.

hmmm. well i'm gonna have to go through a few boxes here and see what i can pull out to put on offer. that way people can have a choice of many. i just love books.

oh, and jean. i'd happily ship a book or two to russia! it may take a little bit to get there but i'm sure you could wait. those would just be our stealth books. :ninja:

That sounds like a great idea. I have a bag of books that I was going to take to the library. I will go through and post them. Maybe someone would like to read them. I would like to have a book signed by the members of TDT.com! That would be great

Wow, Thats quite a list, I will attemt to make a list of my own now to offer
to the cause, this sounds like it will a great idea for alot of folken!
I can only offer paperbacks at this point, as my library is in a growth stage
( buying hardcovers to replace many of the paperbacks)
Also, untill recently I never had any animals in my house but my MOM has a doggie, and I dont smoke in this house but my books have been in a smoking house for many years.

I like this idea.

The last hardcover book I attempted to mail-it was eventually returned-cost me over ten dollars in postage, and that was domestically.I imagine it would have been prohibitively expensive to send it overseas. I still think this could work on an individual basis. Very interesting concept, Turtlesnog.

my only caveat is that jean get first dibs b/c of the whole russia thing (please see http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=3008 for details)
thank you love! there's a lot of books I would love to borrow, but I will have to wait till I have tested the way to send things here and from here (looks like it is slowly becoming more and more feasible); can someone offer a way to do so without risking such valuable things as books or postcards? (I don't mean intrinsic value, as everyone understands)

The only way to ever know is to try. Send me an address there. I'll send a short postcard. I'll send a duplicate to Alexander's also in case it gets lost. That way you'd lose nothing if it didn't get to the Russian address because you'd have an exact copy waiting at Alexander's place. It would be an inexpensive way to test it.

I like it too, the current list should be posted in the first thread I think.

Signing them is going to be cool as hell

The Lady of Shadows
05-22-2008, 03:39 PM
okay, just to make this clear as regards my list:

jean - any books you want from my list are yours to keep. these books were going to find a new home at the used bookstore anyway so don't worry about sending them back. you tell me the names of the books, give me a safe place to ship them, and they are yours. no questions, no problems, no worries. :huglove:

matt - that's a good idea about putting the list in the first message. i'll do that asap.

everyone else - with the exception of the books that jean takes (i'll remove those from my list), when/if you "borrow" a book, if you'd like i'll put your name beside it so people will know when a book is unavailable for borrowing; and it might be cool to see what other people are reading. if that's tmi, i will just put a cool little thingy beside it so everyone knows it's out. oh, and don't worry about my list getting too short, the list i've posted so far only contains about 1/2 of the books i was going to recycle (step one: admit you have a problem. hi, i'm turtlesong and i'm a book addict).

Patrick

The Lady of Shadows

idk, the way things were going last night it was probably one of the old ones telling me to get the hell out of here. :)

after the red word fiasco, i keep getting messages that i wasn't allowed to go to this page, that page, do this, do that. i pm'd matt cause i thought i had done something wrong and been banned or blocked somehow.

matt said i was okay (well, okay from a mb standpoint anyway  ). i'm pretty sure it was a loop from hell because i was using the advanced edit function in photobucket at the same time and it kept crashing internet explorer. goddamn photobucket. (*wanders off mumbling to herself*).

I'll go out in my storage unit today when I get a chance and drag out some boxes. Then I'll put at least a partial list on here. I don't know why I save so many books. I guess I think maybe I'll read them again eventually. Which I normally don't unless they are really good. I love my local library cuz' they have books 4 sale that people donate, only $1 for pb and $2 hc. And a lot of the time I find books that just came out. It's great.
