Oh yeah.. I would wake up feeling sad because I missed my friends. It went on for a while. I still have moments when things will remind me of the series, like a song or just a feeling, and it makes me wish I was living the story for the first time again. Whenever I get someone else to read the series, I feel happy and jealous at the same time.

I'm going to go ahead and move this to the Gilead forum, since it will be more on-topic there. I'll leave a one day redirect so that no one has a problem finding it. :D

Hmmm...I don't know I've been reading the series for about twenty years now. I don't want closure and I don't want a movie (which I don't think would offer any sort of closure anyhow. a film is an entirely different monster).

Brice
04-06-2008, 10:41 AM
Well, I used to be 100% opposed to the idea. After hearing about J J Abrahms possibly doing it and having seen LOST I am only 99% opposed.

It's of no concern to me as I won't be watching it at all if it is made. It is the only thing DT/SK related that will never enter my collection.

I had that "Post Dark Tower" thing when I finished The Dark Tower the first time and have that feeling every now and then since. But now with the comic series, especially The Long Road Home, there is more Dark Tower and I am so happy for that.

It took me a few weeks to wrap my brain around it being over. I was filled with all sorts of emotions. I was frustrated at the ending. I love it at first but then changed my mind. I was sad to see Roland having to do it all over again. I was depressed that just about everyone died and I wouldn't be reading about them anymore.

I was happy that the Stephen King had finished the series and that the adventure came to a close.

Now three and a half years later, I've let a lot of stuff go and I just embrace what we have and I can always reread my books.

Maerlyn, I totally agree with you. I am currently rereading the Dark Tower series and still loving it.

I was very, very sad. I was sad my friends were gone and that I would not read of their (new) adventures anymore. Like most here though, I have recovered and I love it each and every time I reread (or listen to) the series.

Yes, but for only one of my friends. I can't really say Alain and Cuthbert are my friends....not like Eddie, Jake, Susannah and Oy.
Regardless, I am pleased we have new adventures to read. :)

Finishing the series for the first time was terribly depressing. I hated the ending then loved the ending then hated it again. I missed my friends and wanted them back.
Now I'm on my first re-read, almost done with Song of Susannah, and I'm not wanting it to end again.
I guess on the positive side of things though,
like others have said, I can just continue to read them over and over, it's kind of perfect. But bittersweet.

Daghain
04-06-2008, 08:09 PM
I was in complete and utter shock at the ending...and then after thinking about it awhile, I realized it made perfect sense. And, in a way

it never really ends if he has to do it over, right?

And rereading helps. :)

Brice
04-07-2008, 03:25 AM

For me, it didn't feel like an ending at all, but when i read it i skipped over him having the horn so i never felt PDTD, and i started a re-read straight away, mainly because i love the books so much, but another reason was i started The Gunslinger on August 22nd, and was without funds for a while so it took me so long to get it.

razz
04-08-2008, 12:25 PM
It doesn't matter whether you like the ending or not. not everything should have a happing or good ending. i wasn't thrilled about it, but read the last stanza of "Childe roland" and you'll see that it was the right ending.

back to my first point, i almost choked someone a week after i finished. I was reading the new Crichton novel while waiting for the bell at school, and some friends showed up and wanted to start a hack circle. one of them got to where i got pissed at him, so when i get a serve, i hit the hack three times and busted him in the throat. he was eatin' a honey bun at the time.

I am really not having DTs, there is always the re-read.

What really broke my heart was the ending of Harry Potter. That gave me DTs. I want more! At least Roland came to an "end", Rowling teased us with a glimpse of the future!!!

I completely went through PDTD when I finished the series. I was just so so sad that nothing else was new anymore. I may have even teared up a few times.

But I grew to realize I could always do a re-read and be right back there with the Ka-tet. And it's even better now with the new comics.

anyways, this condition happens to me often.
-when i beat and sold Skies of Arcadia.
-After i Sold Tales of Symphonia
-After finishing The Dark Tower
-After I disposed of my first computer when it broke down.

But the point is that i put hours of time into this, only for it to all go away in the end. such a pity, really.

Wow, to do right by it, would take paragraphs and paragraphs because its a pretty complex story, but it is VERY closely connected to the Dark Tower series. The writing style is different because of the two authors writing it, so I can see how it would be hard to get into. Give it another try sometime, your opinion might change.

Black House/Insomnia/Low Men in Yellow Coats are the best books for PDTD, cause they're practically Dark Tower books themselves.

I almost agree with you. :)
One of the three is a connector to be sure, but I'd never call that one "practically a Dark Tower book." A 5 page appearance by one character and some minor connections....:P

The Harry Potter books helped me through the depression. After a reread of The Dark Tower, it was nice to have something easy and low key to read through.

All the lead of for DT VII I was reading all the connection books that I could get my hands on. For over a year all I read was Stephen King Dark Tower and Dark Tower related books. It was a nice break to read Harry Potter after all that.

Crimson King
05-12-2008, 08:23 AM
My depression came at the end of The Waste Lands and again at the end of Wizard and Glass.

I was able to read Gunslinger and DotT right away, with only a short wait for Waste Lands. But like a lot of others here, I'm sure, the 6 year wait between Waste Lands and Wizard and Glass, and the another 6 years between Wizard and Glass and Wolves was almost unbearable.

Wuducynn

Even though I've been a avid fan of the series since Drawing came out in the stores, the years between Wizard and Wolves was the worst for me. The real possibility of King dying being the main part of that.

Exactly, it was funny (not ha-ha, but odd) how he'd make jokes about "hopefully I'll get to finish," etc. and then to have him nearly die...

I mean, don't get me wrong, his living was the most important thing, not because of ending the series, but because of his family, friends, etc.

But I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a selfish part of me that didn't think about the series ending when I read the news about the accident.

I think a good post dark tower book series in His Dark Materials. It is easy and fun and light with a kick. It's only three books and you can kick back and read that before you start your Dark Tower reread.

I had that "Post Dark Tower" thing when I finished The Dark Tower the first time and have that feeling every now and then since. But now with the comic series, especially The Long Road Home, there is more Dark Tower and I am so happy for that.

Same here. And everytime one of my friends starts the series, I feel excited as though it were me going on the journey for the first time so I'm not depressed anymore :) AND there are going to be a lot of new adventures in the comics and we get to see Roland's first friends, which is actually what I'd been looking forward to ever since I read W&G so I'm kinda happy!

The title does not do this post justice. I mentioned before that I decided to read the DT series when it looked like it would be coming to an end. I guess this was the result of being a very impatient child. When I really started to enjoy King there was just I and II, so I went on to read other stories thinking that when III hit I would start. Life took another path and I am just beginning the journey. I finished the gunslinger just moments before writing this post and I now wish I had the sense to start years ago. The intention was to read the series as most others have, starting with Gunslinger and finishing with DT VII. The problem is all of the DT related media now available. I have managed to restrain myself from looking at my Gunslinger Born comic as I was told there would be spoilers. Today my LSoE arrived and after seeing the artwork my restraint grows weak. I see all of the other comics that have been released, including the one due yesterday that is to give more insight into Walter. Sadly my impatience has not improved with age. I want to stick to the plan of going through the series as it was written but I also want to journey into all the side paths that show me the details I find myself now very curious about. Only time will tell the outcome. I will start "Drawing of the Three" tomorrow and just take it one day at a time with my temptations. Wish me luck.

Matt
03-12-2009, 07:59 AM
LSoE will not spoil so feel free to get that one in before you move on if you like.

Once you are past #4--you are free to read the side stuff if you like. It's only Born that spoils.

I would keep going though, there is nothing like reading it start to finish in it's purest form.

Woofer
03-12-2009, 08:28 AM
I would finish the books first and then branch out. I still haven't read all of the comics yet. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/embarassed.gif

LadyHitchhiker

The comics certainly expand upon the stories, though!

Darkthoughts
03-12-2009, 09:02 AM
However, you wouldn't be spoiled by reading LSOE in the meantime, as time wise it happens before the events of The Gunslinger.

I don't think I'm ever going to read something better than DT, and that makes me kinda depressed. Kinda like when I got my first real guitar, I had this "WOW-feeling", but I know that any new book series (or guitars) from now on won't be as good as DT.. You know?

But I have to read something. So what do you recommend? What's your favorite after DT? I'm pretty sure there's a "top books/favorite book series"-thread here somewhere, so if someone could give me that link I'd say thankya.

03-25-2009, 04:24 PM
I went through the same thing the first time I finished. Solution:
get the comics, get the audio books, get the connected books in Kings universe.
The quality may not be equall to DT, but at least you don't have to let go of the whole "world of DT" ;)

soylentjillian
03-25-2009, 06:05 PM
If you read nothing else by King in addition to DT, read

The Stand
Insomnia
Hearts in Atlantis
'Salem's Lot

Those are the ones by King that have major character cross-overs (R.F., Patrick Danville, Ted Brautigan, Father Callahan)

Also, in his short story collections, there is one about Dinky Earnshaw and another Roland story (Little Sisters of Eluria).

As far as other authors, if you liked the movie Willow get Shadow Moon, Shadow Star and Shadow Dawn. They're what happens after the movie.

Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal by Thomas Harris are amazing and eloquent.

If you like gorgeous descriptions, read Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. "The world was a stallion rolling about in the blue ether." The written accents are hard to deal with (think Huckleberry Finn) but it is very poetic.

If you like poetry, read T.S. Eliot, especially The Wastelands, because King used Eliot a lot in the DT books. Especially the Tarot cards in the first book. I love T.S. Eliot.

Tolkien's - Lord of the Rings (obviously!)
Stephen Donaldson - Chronicles 0f Thomas Covenant (all 3 series (8 books & counting))
Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time series (11 books + 12th (& last) to publish this year)
GRR Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire series
RE Feist - Magician/Silverthorn/darkness at Sethannon

I've only read DT and Harry Potter.. I've actually got the Wheel of Time audiobook, but I'm not sure if I want to listen to it. I think I want to read it instead.. Is the Wheel of Time series as good as people say?

The LotR books are too detailed for me.. When trying to read them I felt like everything was there, and my imagination couldn't do anything. I guess I like less descriptions than what LotR has:orely:

And I've never even heard of the other series you're mentioning, so I'll find some info on them later - thanks!

Wheel of Time, in my humble opinion, is a hell of a good series. There are those, even in this hallowed site of ours, who disagree with me!

If I had to recommend just one to you it would be Stephen Donaldson - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. read the first Chronicles (a trilogy of books), I don't think you'd be dissapointed. There's a second Chronicles (another 3 books) and he's currently writing a 'last Chronicles' (2 books of a planned 4 already published).
I've been locked into this series for, I guess at least 25 years now. Great Fantasy.

Alright guys and gals, been a year or so since I have been here..new site looks great..having a bit of a dilemna and this seems to be just as good a place as any for the question..

I, as most of you do, love kings works, anything related to dt has been gobbled up(multiple times as with most of his works)...

Just got done re-reading liseys story for the 2nd time, and as with all of kings books, I am saddened at the end, not that the story is bad or anything, just saddened that it had to end, I throw myself into books pretty heavily so I guess this explains that feeling..but im looking for the next book to get hooked on..doesnt have to be SK but I just cant get the same 'connection' from dean koontz, john saul, or any of those...

So in case nobody read that: heres the q: What books should I search for now?

I have read:
all the dt's
liseys story
black house/talisman
thinner
cell
duma key
insomnia
salems lot
different seasons
geralds game
from a buick 8
the green mile
dreamcatcher
it
the stand
four past midnight
the shining
cujo
hearts in atlantis

I have read these all at least 3 times and love them each time but im wanting to know what others grip YOU the most..

Other authors that I enjoy: Anne Rice

Looking for any and all suggestions

Sorry if this is in the wrong place

THANK!

So I just finished the books for the first time, and I have to say... I'm depressed.

No, it wasn't the ending. I actually loved the ending for what it was. I felt it fit and since I didn't really want the tale to end I'm happy it kind of didn't.

That being said, the tale really IS over for me, and I'm sad. Roland and his tet were the greatest group of adventurers I have ever read about. In all honesty, these books were the best books I've ever read, and after reading something like this I just don't know what to do with myself. There are other books to begin reading now, but I kinda feel like "What's the point", they won't be the Dark Tower.

Woofer

*wolfhug* And the Dark Tower will never be new again, but you can read it again. We all do.

Welcome, gunslinger. Long days and pleasant nights.

I actually got to admit I didn't feel that way, which is otherwise usually the thing that knocks me in my head when I'm done with a serie of books.

In this case it, I (as you said yourself) think the end is fitting, and it's just so damn right I can't feel sad about it.

I actually felt pride when I finished, Roland is Roland and he is what Ka makes of him and... well, ya.

Maybe I'm just happy about having actually read this xD

EDIT: Nowadays, I also tend to find similarities between DT and games/books nowadays... Hell, Fallout 3 became a whole lot more fun when I started to imagine it was a place that had moved on (and recently too, not a gazillion years ago) ^^

I feel your pain, friendo.

I was very depressed when it was over, too. It hits you somewhere around book 7. And the end, you realize, is inevitable. And it's going to be tragic, and sad, and complete. I had to slow down the reading towards the end. A chapter here and there. Went somewhere nice, outside, smoked a little, and finished the ending. Sat there and thought about it. Very somberishly. i know that's not a word, but i think i like it anyway.

It'll get easier. You get to now yuck it up with the chuckleheads on this site, and talk about it, theorize and speculate on what means what, what you think happens next, etc. It's fun.

Now, i'm gonna throw a couple of books at ya that I really like, even though i'm sure there's a thread for that. but there's no time to go looking for it now, so here you go:

Frank Herbert's Dune - Awesome. Epic. Well-written. 7 books. Don't read the other hogwash that Frank's son puts out. It's garble darble, it sucks. just the original 7.

Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling - If you haven't read this, you're nutty. One of the greatest series of books ever. This is coming from a guy who wouldn't give it a chance for years because he thought it was lame and kiddish, a stupid story about jerky little jerk wizards that go to school and get emotional with each other, and play soccer on broomsticks.

Not the case. The books evolve as the main characters do, and J.K. Rowling knows her way around great storytelling. Read it. Do it.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho - Just a good book. About life, and spiritual journey's, finding the soul of the world

1984 - George Orwell - Actually ashamed to say that i just read this recently. I can't believe i hadn't read it earlier. It's really terrific. and sad. and dismal. Listen to the album The Resistance by Muse while you read it.

Welcome! :D

I felt the same way when I finished. In fact, because of how it ended, the first thing I did when I finished was go back and re-read the first sub-chapter of The Gunslinger, which had SO much more meaning for me now. While I have yet to re-read it, I intend to do so, probably this year. In fact, it impacted me so much that I had to type up my thoughts on the matter (went on for several pages, too).

If you want suggestions for what to read now, have you read IT yet? That was the first thing I read after The Dark Tower, and it made me feel the same way when I finished it. No other Stephen King works have given me "post-novel depression" in that way, no matter how much I enjoyed them. If you haven't read it yet, I recommend it highly.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I found out my father actually had a copy of The Stand from its original printing, so I decided I'm gonna give that a read. Only about 80 pages in thus far, but liking some of the characters. No Roland, though... lol

Ah yes, the Post DT depression has set in and I only just finished 30 minutes ago, or so. It actually took me a while to get through the last few chapters. I got the sense that I was already dreading the fact that I would be finished, and was finding excuses not to read. I am sure at some point I will pick the books back up, or try and listen to the audio version. I just picked up Salem's Lot, so at least Father Callahan (Calla Callahan) can once again enter my mind!
