the only comment that i will do (is, by checking the EW website) are about the Bold articles that you list.

Some of them are by SK, (you wrote By SK), but i think it would be less (hmm... misleading) to write smthg like (ABOUT SK), instead of writing which ones are by SK.

this is my point of view... the following seems quite full and right

Herbert,

The articles that are bold faced and include the statement By Stephen King means that King actually wrote the article. The ones that are bold faced but do not have that statement are articles written by other people about something related to Stephen King. Dees that clarify things for you?

I know this is a lot to ask, but have you considered scanning all of them and posting them here?

And by the way, "The Sideshow Has Left Town" is not one of the columns.

It sounds like just about all of them are archived at the magazine's site, EW.com, so there's no need to scan them all here.

Crashing the Party? I'll look it up tonight when I get home.

Correct, that is why The Sideshow ... is bolded in the list - to signify that it is not a Pop of King Column.

I think scanning and posting would be a copyright violation! :-)

Herbert,

I have a subscription to EW and received #990 in the mail on Saturday! The articel is about the top 20 most played songs in Stephen King's Ipod. the Ipod keeps track so King says this is his technically correct list for top 20 songs. It is not online yet!

Just found out. "Crashing the Party" is the one with the online title "Analyzing Oscar."
BTW, Is the column about worst entertainment experiences "Oh, the Horror" or "Oh, the Horror!" (with the !)? Not that it matters much, but still...

Oh the Horror! - corrected in the list! Thanks

I was just wondering, of all the columns he's done for EW, what's your personal favorite? Or topic? I like the ones about movies and books the most, naturally (hey, it's Stephen King!), and since I'm no expert on American politics, these are my least.

[quote=CRinVA;158698]Herbert,
802: Not in your list: Crying Wolfe
809: Not in your list: Stephen King on the worst ads on TV

826/827 6/24/2005 The Sideshow Has Left Town (is a Pop of King column, according to the site)

915: Not in your list: ‘24’, so Good Its Scary!

unknown number - Sep 29 2006: The wonder of it all

Herbert, to answer a few of your comments that as of yet have not been answered.
#802, #809, #915 added to the list - Verified all three using Justin Brooks recently published (by CD Publications) Stephen King: A Primary Bibliography.

#826/#827, The Sideshow... - is definitely NOT a Pop of King Column. The POP columns always appear on the last page before the back cover. There was no column there that week. The article about Michael Jackson was in the ToC under News + Notes and started on Page 20.

#899 9/26/06 The Wonder of it All added to the list - also verified with Justin Brook's Bibliography

I plan on going through the Bibliography with a fine tooth comb to see if any other columns were missed! It may take a week or two! :-)

edit:
the 759 4/9/2004 "Enquiring Minds", seems to do not be in the table of content of the 759 that we can access online...
http://www.ew.com/ew/inside/issue/0,,ewTax:759,00.html

Herbert I double checked my copy - It's there even though not listed in the online ToC. It is an article about why the National Enquirer (magazine) is so addictive!

I updated the list on page one of this thread. I have acquired 4 of the 5 missing EWs - two of them (#'s 899, 915) are not Pop of King Columns and are annotated accordingly. One more to obtain! :-)

#899 - special pullout bonus titled LOST Everything You Need to Get Ready for Season 3 has Kings article on the last two inside pages of the pullout. The subtitle of his article is

THE WONDER OF IT ALL
Stephen King has some burning questions for the masterminds behind 'Lost'

#915 - special pullout bonus titled The Ultimate Viewer's Guide 24 Everything You Need to Get Ready for Season 6 has King's article on the last two inside pages of the pullout. The subtitle of his article is

SO GOOD IT'S SCARY
Even longtime viewer Stephen King is spooked by 24's surprisingly real take on terrorism

I have "Enquiring Minds..." as a PDF file.

CRinVA, you write there's 80 columns, and I say there's 81, so if you're right, one more must be it's only article like "The Sideshow has Left Town" and "So Good It's Scary."

I really can't wait to get Justin's book. I have it ordered through OCP (Overlook Coonection Press) and will get notified when they receive one more stack. They were obviously sold out fast.

I have Justin's book and think that it is fantastic. We collectors have needed an updated King bibliography for a long time. Michael Collings' THE WORK OF STEPHEN KING published by Borgo in 1996 was great and I have about worn my copy out looking things up in it. But it is 12 years old!

I hated HORROR PLUM'D. I was so disappointed with the effort (or lack of it) that Dave Hinchberger and Collings put into this book. Published by The Overlook Connection Press in 2002 it was supposed to be an updated version but I found the layout extemely difficult to use. I had hoped that the many mistakes (typos and factual) in the 1996 edition would be corrected but they weren't. I'll bet I haven't used my copy more than four or five times in the six years I have owned it. What a wasted effort, IMO.

Justin's book, however, is really great. Very easy to look things up. Of course the problem with a prolific writer like King is that books like this are outdated by the time they are published. The last "Pop of King" column in Justin's book is Jan. 20, 2006 "Just Askin'".

There are two addenda books and in the second one the last "Pop of King" I can find is Dec. 28, 2007 - Jan. 4, 2008 "2007: My Top Books".

If you can get a copy of the book that also includes the two addenda booklets you should do so and even with them the entries stop at the beginning of 2008. An unavoidable problem.

I wonder if Justin would consider publishing a yearly update?

Just for the joy of building a collection, I guess. I've got all of them. Bought at a store so there are no mailing labels on any of my copies. I guess so. I was also sort of surprised by the question of why someone would collect these columns. I would turn that around and ask "Why wouldn't you?" Nonfiction columns like these "The Pop of King" columns are as bibliographically significant as the "King's Garbage Truck" columns in The Maine Campus newspapers, the book review columns in the Adelina magazines or any other nonfiction piece he has written. They are easily obtainable and very affordable. They sure seem collectible to me.

I was actually going to start a thread about this subject called..."for love or money?".

I think its an interesting topic about weather most of our collectors collect for the investment value of the items (I know they are down now but may not always be) or for the sheer joy of collecting or a combination of both.

Bob, maybe I wasn't clear in my rhetorical question. What I meant was this. This set is new, in pristince condition, never read. Since they were never read I assumed they were bought just to resell at some time later and that makes no sense. These are not appreciating in value! Yes I am collecting htem all - as one can see from the list on the front page I have all but a couple. Just publishing this list has let me know of issues that I somehow missed or were thrown away (my wife hates the magazines hagning around). I have found 4 on ebay for less than $2 each and now think I am only a couple short of a complete set.

And by the way, I read through them totally. Every issue. Of course I look to the back right away to see if there is a Pop Of King, but then sometimes you find a King article within, like those 24 and Lost pull outs last year! And all my copies have a mailing lable printed on them. Not a problem as I never plan on letting the set go! :-)

It would be interesting to know what makes one person a collector and another not. I have collected things all my life. Baseball cards and monster magazines were my first passion when I was 10-14 years old. If I get one thing of a series I seem to have a compulsion to get them all and complete the set. My wife, on the other hand, has no collecting impulse and just shakes her head at some of the things I do.

I suppose there are some serious insecurity issues at play in collectors but I have never read a psychological profile or any attempt to explain collecting impulses. I think I would be a good test case.

Bev Vincent

I don't think I have the collector gene, but I do have a completist gene. When I get hooked on something, I want it all. I had to have every Hardy Boy book, every Agatha Christie novel and short story collection, every King book and story, every Pink Floyd song, etc...but I didn't necessarily care to have valuable or collectable versions. A second-hand paperback was often good enough for me. I wanted the content and not the packaging. But it's still something of an obsession!

I suppose there are some serious insecurity issues at play in collectors but I have never read a psychological profile or any attempt to explain collecting impulses. I think I would be a good test case.

I caught the collecting bug when I was very young. I collected birds eggs. This did not cost any money, but lots of my time, and bravery getting to some of the nests. (I know this is not PC these days, but it was very popular back then).

All through my life I have collected various things, changing my mind too often on the things collected. (Insecurity?).

The only thing that has stayed with me is stamp collecting. This hobby has turned into a serious investment and the returns have been 33%, 31% and 32% for the last 3 years.

I try to reconstruct sheets of Penny Blacks which came in sheets of 240 and were cut by hand at the Post Office. This is about the equivalent of trying to get ALL the Regulator's checks. (Compulsive, Completist, Madness?)

My wife has no collecting impulses whatsoever, and neither do my children.

I think anyone attempting a psychological profile on collectors would do well to visit Calvin's Corner for research.

Matt, I think your idea of a separate thread for this debate is a great idea. I just do not know how to do it myself...sorry.

I have been collecting coins since I was about 6 years old. More intently at some times and then not at all for other periods. My mom would take me to the bank in the mid-1960s and I would get a $50 sealed burlap sack, bring it home and then look at each and every penny. Never found an absolute gem but always passable investment grade coins so soon I had my book nearly filled (remember those blue cardboard Dansco? tri-fold things that had the slots for the coins with the date variants 1909, 1909-S, 1909-s VDB etc.). Then as I grew older and I got jobs, I would upgrade my collection little by little. I still collect coins today, but mostly just proof sets and some commemoratives.

I started for the love of the hunt and the thrill of finding something new which remains to this day. The Investment piece slowly crept in as the value of my collection grew to such a size that it could not be ignored. As investments is what I do for a living, I try to be very careful that I do not put too many eggs in one basket, so while I have a sizeable King collection, I do still have my coins, my home and $$ placed in other investments. I do not consider myself a completist, although the Dark Tower items that I do not currently own, I do want very badly. But they are all books. If there were (and there are) promotional materials out there for the Dark Tower, they just don't appeal to me (like the Duma Key tennis balls...not DT I know but you get the point). Also, I know that I can never get everything King related, so I focus on what gets my own heart rate up. King's stories in Cavalier etc. hold zero interest to me as do these Pop of King things. Never seen one, don't want to.

And for the record, my wife collects nothing and doesn't really understand the "bug" at all. She acknowledges that I have it, that it makes me happy, and to a large degree she does support me in my pursuit of things, but she really doesn't "get it." Neither do any of my three kids.

I am a fan of Stephen KING.
I started reading all the books that i could, then record movies on TV.. then when i started having a wee bit of money (i must admit i am still young... 21) i started buying movies, books.... second hand pocket books.. were fine with me...

then within the last few years, i started earning some money and being 'quite' (financially) comfy... which allows me to buy whatever i need (well.. i wont say that i will be able to buy any english language items..)

then my collection have (and still is) moving from cheap pocket books to french collecting items, 1st editions, some foreign stuff... this is also partially because i am managing few websites about SK...
it is not the investment which interest me (anyway, noone really care about french items except french... and the rarities interesting for foreign collectors are so few...), but chasing items, talking & sharing with collectors and fans...

Just like I was saying a few comments ago. Got my EW today and turned directly to the back page. Nope - no Pop of King!

Later while watching a baseball game on the computer, I picked up the EW and started to read through. Pretty interesting stuff. It's a special double issue kind of titled The New Classics, with the Best Movies, TV, Music, Books and more of the past 25 years! So of course King has one entry in the Best Books of the last 25 years. It surprized me being On Writing!

Each Best 100 area features a Best Year 19xx by someone from that genre. King gets the nod for the Books area and thus I have another EW to add to my archive. It's a 2 paragraph article written by King and accompanied with a picture I have never seen of King with a stack of paperbacks. Looks more like a painting than a pciture. See the update on the first post in this thread on page 1 for the issue sepcifics. King also came in second in a poll of favorite authors of the last 25 years with 30% of the vote. #1 went to JK Rowling with 46% of the vote.

There was an aside chart about the most prolific authors of the past 25 years and King came in 4th with 60 books. John Updike was 3rd with 61, Ruth Rendell was 2nd with 70, and Joyce Carol Oates was first with a whopping 119 books!

King did not even make the list for the longest books, suggesting that this particular EW poll was not very scientific!

By the way I've read only 6 of the top 100 books listed as follows:

#1 The Road, by Cormac McCarthy
#3 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
#21 On Writing by Stephen King
#67 The Kite Runner by Khaled hOSSEINI
#87 The Ruins by Scott Smith
#96 The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

King in EW
A short article--about a 1/4 page, not a column--appears in the new EW, their 1000th issue. It's a part of a series written by various celebrities called "My Favorite Year". King's is 1999--or, more precisely, 7/1999-7/2000. You'll have to go to page 108 of the 6/27-7/4 issue to read it though.

Well, I finally printed off the list and checked it against my collection and found that I am doing pretty well. I have all of "The Pop of King" columns which surprised me because I really thought I had probably missed getting one or two of them over the years.

I also found an older issue that is missing from your list, Bob. It is issue #77, dated August 2, 1991. It contains an article written by King titled "How I Created GOLDEN YEARS....and Spooked Dozens of TV Executives."

A couple of questions:

Does issue #795 with "The Joy of Sox" contain any original writing by King?

Issue #747/748 with "Kingdom Hospital" same question. Any original writing by King?

Thanks.

Did they only include authors they had bothered to read or something?.

Dean Koontz has around 80 books so surely he should have been on the list?, I mean he releases a new one every couple of months lol.

Is "My Favorite Year 1999" an umbrella title, meaning it's the headline title for all the contributors (again meaning that King's piece is untitled) or is King's piece titled that way?
Is it even online?

I really liked the back page thing. Considering I do not subscribe to EW but I do buy it somewhat regularly off the newstands, sometimes the only selling point of the whole magazine would be to turn to the backpage and if Stevie was on it, I was a-buying it.

Dont know what to do if I must dig through pages or read table of contents to find him.

I received this latest issue in the mail on Saturday. I did the same thing, flipped to the back and was bummed that SK wasn't there. But I knew something was different because none of the other usual columnists were there either.

Looks like the columns are buried in the middle of the magazine going foward, so check the Table of the Contents carefully from here on out.

Either that or check this thread, I'm sure our members will post notice of current SK columns here while the relevant issue is still available on the newstands.

Several changes to page 1 - some based on information others have given and my further research. I am sure there are others yet uncovered! :-)

The newest Pop Of King came out in the most recent EW #1012 dated 9/19/08

Two of the very early EW issues listed are just very short letters to the editor from Stephen King - I have included the entire text of each letter here:

Issue #61 Oscarama
Oscarama

In toting up the minuses — your idea of them anyway — on Kathy Bates' performances as Annie Wilkes, you suggest that one of them is that her nomination comes for work done in a ''Stephen King movie.'' I'd suggest that this is a pretty snotty even for a magazine with a large number of critical bullies on its staff. The point is, Kathy did a great job. Misery the film was written by William Goldman and directed by Rob Reiner. So why is it a ''Stephen King movie'' in the first place? Is it mine because Rob's company bought or because his check didn't bounce? And if this had been a black actress, would you have adjusted the odds if the picture in question had been a Spike Lee movie? Maybe Kathy and I should get in touch with Spike Lee. I'm beginning to understand how and why he manages to stay so pissed off at you guys in the critical press.
Stephen King
Bangor, Maine

Issue #146 On Rampage
ON 'RAMPAGE'
The review of William Friedkin's Rampage is not really a review at all but a prissy little statement of political correctness. Rampage isn't a defense of the death penalty or an examination of whether certain psychopathic behavior is legally sane; it is a terrifying extreme-close-up portrait of a monster. To review this fierce, emotional, and spiritually challenging movie on the basis of its legal stance is the act of a critic too busy counting trees to see there's a forest in front of him. Given the fact that this week's issue features a nude cigarette-smoking bimbo on the cover, I guess I'm not surprised.

The current issue #1014 of Oct 3rd has the ever so slight response from Stephen King to a letter to the editor from a reader that obviously does not care for Sai King's opinions ii the Pop of King column. King's response in it's entirety is:

No sexism intended. Ladies have every right to enjoy the exploits of Jack Reacherand Harry Bosch..just as I have every right to enjoy Nora Roberts. Genre fiction is NOT unisex.

Great idea. Maybe after the book Stephen King: The Non-Fiction has come out (since it's probably one book I, for example, won't get until it gets less pricy).
I do have an exhaustive list of all King (fiction and non-fiction) that I've compiled for years, but how complete it is, I don't know. It even has first lines and appearances, etc.
I also frequently update my list but it's mostly for my own pleasure although I've shared it with a few.

Most of the printed articles do show up online however. I have seen several online Pop of Kings that give no indication that, in fact, the article is a Pop of King column.

As a pop novelist, he was divine. A Crichton book was a headlong experience driven by a man who was both a natural storyteller and fiendishly clever when it came to verisimilitude; he made you believe that cloning dinosaurs wasn't just over the horizon but possible tomorrow. Maybe today.
Crichton, 66, died after a battle with throat cancer in L.A.

CRinVa,

I noticed two small spelling mistakes:
#762-763 should be "Head-Bangor's Ball" instead of "Head Banger's Ball"
#812 should be "No Stars, Sorry" instead of "No Stars, Dorry"

Also, you use a bold red font to highlight the items you don't have. However, bold font also indicates that a text is not a Pop of King column. This makes it unclear whether or not "Crying Wolfe" and "My Fever Pitch Obsession" are Pop of King columns. They are, which you could show unambigiously by using a non-bold red font here.

There is a little bonus also on Page 134 of the magazine. This page is calle The $ave and in the column called What you can get for... King adds for $20 you could get a horro movie and some popcorn, junior mints and a diet pepsi, with a $1 leftover for an instant scratch lottery ticket! He goes on to say that if Tabatha comes along (doubtful as he is watching the horror flick Carriers) he'd opt for a small popcorn and a coke to share as he can economize for love!

Not sure where SK goes to the movies but here in the greater Washington DC area the ticket price alone is now $11.50 per person!!!!!!!! You'd have to make it what I could do for $25! :-)

The next time you see or hear of a good small film like Carriers, why not ask your local cinema to book it — if only in the dusty little 60-seat screening room at the end of the Popcorn Hallway of Death, where they're still showing The Proposal for one old fella who got in on his senior discount, farted twice into his seat, and then fell asleep.

Interestingly, that film was rated by EW's "official" film reviewers as one of the worst movies of 2009. I guess their tastes run differently than Mr. King's.

The only movie I've seen on King's list was "District 9."
