King also gives some interesting statistics on reading in general; the most frightening is that only 57% of Americans read for pleasure at least occassionally! Fortunately, this group is sitting at 100%! :-) Otherwise why would you be here?????? Page 1 of thread updated with issue information for current issue. As Bev states above on the cover of the EW 20th Anniv. Edition is the following blurb

STEPHEN KING
ON FAME, REHAB
& MOVIE SNACKS

As part of their 20th Anniversary in publishing, EW appears to be celebrating one of their proudest moments, snagging "Uncle Stevie" for the newly developed Pop of King column. This article partially reproduces highlights from some of their favorite columns. In my view this is technically not a new Stephen King Pop of King Column (nothing new written by Stephen King, but I did include it in the Pop of King count anyways); the column title as stated on page #1 of this thread is The Wit and Wisdom of Stephen King. There's a great illustration (by John Euland) of King reading an Elmore Leonard novel, with a box of Junior Mints hanging out of his coat jacket, King holding a skewer of said Junior Mints, a turntable, stereo stand and pile of albums with an AC/DC album on top, a box of theatre popcorn spilling in his chair, a Harry Potter novel propped against a chair, a Jaws poster on the wall behind him, Hurley and John Lock statuettes (maybe bobbleheads) sitting on the bookshelf and a Metallica Album cover hanging on the wall. Looks like a Terminator 3 framed oil painting on the wall too! On page 1 of the thread I have highlighted titles in blue if they were partially reproduced here in this issue.

At the end of the 6 page article there is a small blurb that says "For a complete guide to every column, best-of list, and pop culture musings from Stephen King visit ew.com/king." (ew.com/king) Enjoy surfing!!!

Someone posted on twitter that the latest ew have have a picture of king's records collection and that includes a record from ACDC
And king would apparently mention it?

The exact tweet:
AC_DC_film New issue of Entertainment Weekly includes Stephen King's favorite things. The photo shows AC/DC's Highway to Hell in his record collection.

Bev Vincent
07-28-2010, 02:27 AM
It's part of a photo montage, so it's not really King's record collection. His head is superimposed on the picture (about 50% too large!). The doctored photo contains elements from all of the columns that are summarized in this issue. The AC/DC mention is from his first column: "I like AC/DC, Metallica, Steve Earle, and the Dixie Chicks."

King's most recent appearance in Entertainment Weekly is not one of his Pop of King Columns; instead there is a picture and a paragraph in the First Looks section about the TV hit show Sons of Anarchy. Stephen King guest stars on the Sept 21st Season Opener (how apropos). The picture shows a rough looking grey haired king (without specs) and decked out in a black leather jacket. King was given carte blanche to write, direct or act in an episode. King chose to act and only had one demand - to ride a Harley! Being a show about bikers I guess that was pretty easy to accomodate as the directors hooked him up with a big red Hog! Also note that King's character's last name pays homage to Kings pseudonym, Richard Bachman!

Page one of the thread updated accordingly.

Presuming that is correct, King had no writing involvement in the show.

I meant in this brief article:) But it would be cool if King would write an episode for a TV series like he did with The X-Files. Sons is not in his kind of genre, but still it would be interesting. I always hoped King would pen an episode for Lost.
BTW, did you know King originally planned to write one for Millennium but found it too hard? There were also some rumors that he wanted to write one for Battlestar Gallactica, a show he likes/liked. It was a rumor, sure, but one of the shows producers stated that a number of years ago.

No I did not know.
Certainly for another thread, but I would guess King was constrained by limitations other than his own capability.

DanishCollector
08-17-2010, 01:41 PM
I agree. It was not his lack of capabilty, rather a case of Millennium being a complex show compared to X-Files, and I believe it was the main character Frank Black that King found hard to "get into."

Correct -- he did the cameo when he was out in L.A. to accept an award earlier this year. He blogged about it on his website.

herbert, Millenium was finished in an epsisode of The X-Files, in season 7. The episode is simply titled "Millennium." Mulder and Scully meets Frank Black. I won't spoil it here so you should try and see the episode.

DanishCollector
08-19-2010, 02:17 PM
well, season 7 of the The X-Files is the shortest seasons of them all. Chris Carter was the man behind both shows and because Millennium was cancelled all of a sudden, he found a way to end that show in an X-File episode.

Aw, that sucks. :(

I guess I am the only one who is sort of relieved that this column is coming to an end. I tried to get mint condition newsstand copies (without those nasty address labels) of each issue. Somewhat surprisingly I often had trouble doing this. When subscribers got their copies and Bob Ireland posted the existence of a new column on this thread my local Barnes & Noble was displaying the prior week's issue. I had to remember to show up at B&N on the date of the issue to buy a copy. As a rule they didn't display them prior to the actual date on the cover. But sometimes, if someone new was working the magazine section, they would display them early and the issue I wanted was already gone (sent back or destroyed). On more than a few occasions over the past few years I have gone to as many as four bookstores trying to find the correct issue. Most store employees thought I was nuts and I guess I am. I have even resorted to ordering back issues from the EW website on occasion. The problem there is that they come in flimsy paper envelopes with no support and are frequently wrinkled in shipment. I do have a pristine collection of all the issues but am glad this chapter in my collecting life is coming to an end.

I subscribe to EW. Some are still sitting in a stack unread, nasty address labels and all. Some issues with King columns I mailed to Ari, others eventually found their way to the recycle bin. Personally I just couldn't convince myself that these columns were worth the money and effort to amass in truly collectible form. Kudos to you for doing it though, Bob!

The money wasn't really the issue. Four bucks every three weeks or so. I guess my feeling (as a King collector) was how could a collector NOT collect them? If the same words were published in some underground literary publication with a circulation of only 100 copies everyone would be falling all over themselves to buy them. The words are part of King's canon of writing whether they are in a glossy newsstand magazine, an intro to a limited edition, or whatever. To me it was a no-brainer.

Patrick

Yes, I understand the reasons for collecting all those issues in mint condition format. Personally though I am not a completist. However I absolutely admire those who have the discipline to do it. I'm just doing my part to reduce the oversupply and thereby incrementally increase the rarity of your collection.

Your comment about "some underground literary publication" is totally spot on, by the way.

It seems odd all the interest that is being generated in the EW columns now that he has stopped writing it. No one seemed to care that much about them when he was writing them. I thought it was a pretty good deal.....new King writing every three weeks or so for only 4 bucks (less if you subscribed or had a B&N member card).

It's been 21 issues since Stephen King appears in the pages of EW. Much to my delight, as I was reading this weeks issue (I still have the subscription and was planning on letting it simply run out; but maybe not!) what appeared but a King Column called My Summer Reading List. Page 1 of the thread updated with the issue information. Note also a cool new Stephen King characature on the byline! And unlike the Pop Of King columns this one overflows onto a second page!

From the 2/24/12 issue, page 81:

Stephen King... What I'm Reading Now

I'm reading George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series--deep into the second volume. I never thought I'd get into another long fantasy, especially one featuring knights of old and ladies bold, and I'd never read Martin before, but he's a born storyteller with a one-in-a-million imagination. When I'm not reading about Westeros, I'm thinking about it, even dreaming about it. The HBO series is terrific--I especially loved Sean Bean as Eddard Stark--but the books are even better.

Has anyone ever documented the SK references in "Friends" the Sitcom? I was watching an episode today and it occurred to me that the writers (at least a few) must be SK fans. I can think of three off the top of my head. Bev Vincent

Leonard’s character-driven prose earned him a host of eminent admirers, from Walker Percy (“He’s as good as the blurbs say: ‘The greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever’”) to Stephen King, who said Leonard wrote “the kind of book that if you get up to see if there are any chocolate chip cookies left, you take it with you so you won’t miss anything.”

Here's what I wrote at the time: There’s a three page interview with King in the January 11 issue of Entertainment Weekly about Doctor Sleep. “6 Books We Can’t Wait For — Stephen King on His Shining Sequel"

The full interview was published online: http://shelf-life.ew.com/2013/02/01/stephen-king-the-shining-doctor-sleep-preview/

Ok, so maybe the 1st post listing should mention that this is an interview and not an essay by King?

I agree with a couple of his book picks. The Goldfinch was probably my favorite book of 2013. I read Wolf Hall last year, too, and liked it quite a bit once I got used to her quirky style and came to terms with the fact that there are at least six characters all named Thomas.

My least favorite book of 2013...Doctor Sleep. *ducks*

Issue 1303, March 21, 2014 (http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/03/12/orphan-black-tatiana-maslany-cover/), has "picks by" Stephen King on the subject of "criminally underrated shows, movies, books, albums and games"

The cover features Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany in several of her personas.

I'm currently organizing the digital stuff I have and found an e-mail sent to Entertainment Weekly that was supposed to be printed on August 1st, 2006 number of the magazine:

I'd hold the elevator door for Dalton Ross anytime. As I am sure he'd hold it for me. If Dalton Ross said, "Yo, dog, what up?" I'd say "Same-as, my man, feel me?" I'd even swap some of my pork rinds for one of Dalton Ross' Ho-Ho's, as long as it wasn't one of those caramel Ho-Ho's he be holding, and I would never be calling his home-girl a Ho-Ho, just as he would never be calling mine the same, I'm sure I got that right. Because any man who boxed shirtless against Oscar De La Ho'Ya can be in my posse any day, if you see where I'm coming from. And as for this piece, I am so down with it I could put on a top hat and crawl under a copperhead.

—Steve

P.S.: I just finished watching 13 episodes of The Wire and I can't stop talking like this, dog.

[E-Mail to Entertainment Weekly, printed in the August 1, 2006 issue, concerning article by senior editor Dalton Ross: King Me! - Dalton Ross laments the fact that his famous colleague Stephen King doesn't kick it in the office]

Does anyone know which E.W. magazine's number was this e-mail printed on?
