I'm reading Samurai Executioner. INCREDIBLE! I don't say that lightly. The amount of research seems staggering. I'm in love with the art too; just ink and paper, none of that digital crap that the big two are pushing.

Alan Moore - Providence, Act 1. This is pretty dense stuff. I tip my hat to Moore for not allowing any ads in this.

Katsuhiro Otomo - Akira 6.

Just re-read Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder. The man can write a good horror story, no doubt. I also re-read Trees vol. 1 by Warren Ellis and picked up Poe Dameron: Black Squadron from the library. It looks all right. It's a prequel to The Force Awakens.

Want to wait until Fables is done with completely so I can speed binge my way through it. I left off on Vol 14, I think..

Picked up Trillium by Jeff Lemire because I was intrigued by the premise and I really enjoyed his series, Sweet Tooth.
I'm enjoying it so far, but I'm not digging the artwork.

Lemire's art is cool but it gets old really fast. His characters in whatever the new book he just put out look exactly like the ones from whatever the previous book was.

Just read Batman and Beast by Peter Milligan, and The Magical Twins by Jodorowsky. The former was pretty good, the latter not so much.

I'm not really a reader of comics or graphic novels, but stumbled across Alan Moore's Providence, the artwork for which (combined with my affinity for Lovecraft) I found very intriguing. Looking into it, I discovered The Courtyard and Neonomicon and figured I should probably start with those.

Having not yet bought or read any of them, I wanted to check out the writing just to make sure it actually suited me (I found a sample online of V for Vendetta; unfortunately, it was very much not for me), and since Barnes & Noble and Amazon don't seem to have the usual "look inside" samples for these, I had to resort to image searches. This did turn up some results, but they are pretty scattered (one page here, one there; ideally, I'd like to see the first five pages or so). Also, I can't be sure that everything I find is actually from these works; sometimes, related works by Moore or other Cthulhu mythos works turn up.

The big issue is this, however: a few things that turned up were pornographic (male genitals - which is not to say that I want to see female ones), one of them very much so (featuring the plentiful, shall we say, "result" of male genitals). My question to any of you who have read the Courtyard/Neonomicon/Providence series: is there much of that? Or (hopefully) none (perhaps this was something else)? This would be a deal-breaker; I don't enjoy this type of thing (although if it's just one scene, I'll accept it), and my wife would definitely wonder what the hell I was doing by buying such stuff.

WeDealInLead
06-29-2017, 11:08 AM
See, with Neonomicon that stuff is there but that's not what the story is about at all. I could tell you exactly what the scene is but it's best experienced while you're reading. That scene --the book actually-- will haunt you. I believe every story in HPL's mythos should or it hasn't done it's job.

Moore has decided a long time ago he doesn't care about our sensibilities. Those three titles all have pornographic elements but they're there only to make the reader even more unsettled and unnerved.

St. Troy
06-29-2017, 11:09 AM
How much would you say is there? Just a few pages, limited to a scene or two, or recurring regularly?

WeDealInLead
06-29-2017, 11:12 AM
Correction: there's nothing pornographic in Courtyard.

His Yuggoth Cultures and Other Growths is excellent too.

There's only one truly shocking rape scene. After that there's occasional nudity but if you can handle an Old One getting his monster wiener jerked off by a human female, you'll do all right.

..Moore has decided a long time ago he doesn't care about our sensibilities.
This is it in a nutshell. Moore's work on these is largely erotic and unsettling but it's usually in service to the narrative he's trying to tell.

Moore's work on these is largely erotic and unsettling but it's usually in service to the narrative he's trying to tell.

That, I can understand, but this...

...an Old One getting his monster wiener jerked off by a human female...

...to paraphrase Bono, the Old Ones I believe in aren't looking for handjobs, mister. This idea just strikes me as hopelessly silly and juvenile. If someone can tell me that it's not, well...

WeDealInLead
06-29-2017, 07:14 PM
This monster is being held prisoner as both a subject and an object of worship to a small cult. He's pretty feeble too. Instead of getting raped over and over, the woman decides to use her hand. She also gets to better understand him. Maybe it's Stockholm syndrome, I'm not sure. I haven't read the book since it came out. Once the monster realizes she's pregnant, he sets her free. And this way we bid adieu to humanity because she's carrying a god in her belly.

So, unless the book is meant to be humorous or juvenile, Moore simply isn't the type to waste a single word or go for a cheap thrill. His books can be shocking, and heck, even traumatizing, but he's not the type to just fill space with nudity for nudity's sake.

This is an interesting read: https://factsprovidence.wordpress.com/moore-lovecraft-comics-annotation-index/the-horror-of-rape-alan-moore-lovecraft-and-neonomicon/

I should have asked: does Providence have the same kind of (sexual) thing going on? Since Providence is my main objective here, if that is free of 8th grade erotica, I could tolerate the others in order to get to that.

OK, I checked the first hardcover and can confirm there's indeed nudity. However, it's only a few panels and IMO, it's in service of story.

The rest of my singles are in storage so I can't either confirm or deny. Providence is definitely a book for adults but it's tasteful and most importantly, the story is incredible. It's demanding and rewarding.

So far I'm enjoying it. The articles/interviews between the chapters add an extra layer of detail that I think is pretty awesome. It seems like it's gonna be a pretty heavy story compared to most graphic novels I've read, which I'm fine with. :)

For whatever reason, I've decided to read everything Wolverine's been in. FYI, over five thousand issues and counting. But, because of time lag between what I own, what my libraries have, what is available online, and what is on it's way to me in the mail, I've somehow ended up reading from three points at once.

1) From the beginning: Read Incredible Hulk 180, and I own Giant-Size X-Men 1 and Uncanny X-Men 94 onward (when he joins the team), but since it's ONLY 94 issues from the beginning, I've started with Uncanny X-Men 1. Uncanny X-Men 1 through 66 are in the mail.

2) From the end: I've read Old Man Logan in the past, and I loved it. Bought it again, read it, loved it again, and NOW I find out he has a series of his own! My library system has volumes 0 through 10, so I reserved them and had them all shipped to my closest library.

3) Ultimate X-Men: While I was waiting for the library to get all my Old Man Logan books from other libraries in the area, I started on Ultimate X-Men 1, which I guess is "parallel universe Wolverine" so it doesn't really interfere with the "real" continuity.

That is all. Also, I'm up to 801 graphic novels in my collection, woot woot :)

I just finished Salammbo by Philippe Druilett and Smashed by Junji Ito. I'm almost done reading the first deluxe hc of Berserk. No wonder Guts' name is Guts, yeesh.

I should probably finish the Wolverine in Hell omnibus I started a lifetime ago.

Just finished my reread House of Chains and started Midnight tides by Steven Erikson. Karsa is a strong intro in HoC but loving the complete new set of characters in MT. Impressive for a 5th book in a series!

I'm rereading Tokyo Ghost by Rick Remender and just last night I finished a reread of Stan Lee's and Moebius's Silver Surfer two-shot called Parable. I have the original comics but Giraud's art is always better in a deluxe format. The colouring seems to have been a little updated but the linework is still the same.

I'll probably tackle Nausicaa next.

I wanted to read Tokyo Ghost - let me know how it is - I had not purchased that yet. Just finished watching The Boys on Amazon - so I picked up the GN to read. I really enjoyed Preacher and thought that The boys was going to be a bit more graphic in some ways and over the top - so I never bothered to pick it up...then I saw the show and and was hooked and wanted to see how the original story played out and what changes they had to make

I haven't seen The Boys yet. I've read the comics though. I'm waiting for the planets to align aka my wife isn't working on her computer and the child is at her grandparents' place so I can bar the doors and binge watch The Boys Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing.

Tokyo Ghost is great. Have you read anything by Rick Remender? His main characters are always damaged people you can't help but root for even when they're making the same mistakes over and over again. TG is similar to his other post-apocalyptic dystopian book called Low (an emotional cripple trying to save a dying world).

4/5 for Tokyo Ghost
4.5/5 for low

Oh, snap. Here's the deluxe hc with a variant cover:

I'm not sure how rare it is. Probably limited to whatever they can sell.

Not really Dark Tower, but I have collected and read ALL of the Stand comics, man that was though. Those comics are rare (and now becoming even more difficult to find) it's really worth it though. They are extremely well illustrated and tell the story almost exactly as in the book. They left some stuff out though but it's barely anything.

Just finished reading Daredevil - Know Fear by Chip Zdarsky, about to start the second deluxe hc of Battle Angel Alita. I'm already slowly reading (savouring, really) Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

Re-reading The Incal. I'm thinking of getting the slipcased edition. The only thing better than Moebius's art is his art in an oversized format.

I just finished first three trade paperbacks of Oblivion Song by Kirkman. He's once again unable to not drag things out. Every one of these paperbacks collects five issues. All three paperbacks could've been casually condensed into a single one. The premise itself is pretty neat but the art is very hard to follow.

I also re-read the first two omnibus editions of The Boys. Great stuff, totally outrageous but also smart and even touching in parts. FYI, the show is a lot tamer than the comics.

Loved The Boys, started and finished it a few months ago. Then I finished The Walking Dead as soon as my fourth compendium came in. Then Ö what am I on? Finished the main series of Crossed, now I'm on Crossed: Wish You Were Here and then I'll go on to Crossed + 100.

Other than that, I'm wading through early X-Men. The language is so hard to get through. 60's language. Blugh! I just want to fast forward to the 80's lol.

I'm about to read the entire Saga run again. My library has really stepped it up when it comes to creator owned titles.

No, I've read X-Men throughout my youth, but never from start to finish. The only reason I'm reading them now is because of my ultimate goal to read Wolverine from start to finish, including any and all things related

Reading Hickman's new X-Men run. Fascinating stuff, I'm loving this new status quo. I had to look up the whole Krakoa thing tho.

Finally got around to reading DC's Flashpoint event. Honestly as far as What If's that one was kinda lame. I wanted to read the Batman-Flashpoint spinoff but if the central story is anything to go by I'm not really interested anymore.

Got a few gifts for x-mas -

Annihilator by Grant Morrison, and The Private Eye by Brian K. Vaughn. Have nothing to do today so I'll probably give both a decent rip.

Just read volume 1 of The Sandman. I really liked it. I know itís finding its feet with the first volume, but I also know how good itíll get in the later volumes. Definitely a series I plan to spread out and savour.
