This place in Turkmenistan is called by locals “The Door to Hell”. It is situated near the small town of Darvaz. The story of this place lasts already for 35 years. Once the geologists were drilling for gas. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it’s burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there.

There is also a coal mine fire in Centralia, PA which has burned since 1962.

We've got mountains here that have been on fire on the inside for 60-75 years.

No snow collects on them.

That is disturbing...the sheer level of
stupidity in humans is staggering.
Imagine the resourses being consumed.
Not to mention the pollution generated.

I wonder how many people there are
employed at these places to "contain"
and control such fires.

Grab the marshmallows and straighten out the coat hangers! I'll bring the graham crackers and Hershey bars.

Cant they just dump a shitload of sand into it? :)

Or tap the gas mound half a k away and somehow reduce the amount of gas being wasted?

Sorry Josh, it is used for human sacrifice.

We cannot stop it or all convenience stores will close.
