The Official 2024 Oscar Discussion/Contest Thread

[Still Servant]

This thread is long overdue.

Welcome to the 2023 Oscar Contest! There are a lot of Oscar-type films that are starting to be released, so I thought it was about time to create our Oscar thread.

The Rules

Oscar night is right around the corner, so I'm going to post the rules for those who might not be familiar with them. Please tell your friends from other boards to come on over and join us. The more the merrier.

You have until showtime on March 10, 2024.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, whomever has the closest number without going over is the winner. If the tie remains, the person who submits their ballot earliest is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have some time before Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess.

I haven't been around here much recently, which I hope to change. I didn't want to go too much longer without creating this thread.

We are currently in the middle of Oscar season. Over the past few weeks, I've seen a number of films that might find themselves with a few nominations come Oscar night. Some I've enjoyed and some I've been kinda lukewarm on.

I'll start with the uninspiring. I'm a huge Ridley Scott fan and I really loved The Last Duel. It's a film that deserved more eyeballs when it was released a few years ago. Jodie Comer should have been nominated for an Academy Award. Needless to say, I was really hyped for Napolean. Scott is really in his wheelhouse with historical films and Joaquin Phoenix is just a fantastic actor. Unfortunately, the film was just... fine. It wasn't bad by any means, but we have seen similar films done better.

I saw Saltburn on Friday night and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Emerald Fennell won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman and I could see her winning another one for Saltburn. I could argue she should get a nod for direction as well. Barry Keoghan gives a performance that is hard to describe. He's doing things in this film that many actors would be reluctant to do. It's a mesmerizing performance. It's possible that Saltburn is just too odd for the Academy, but I hope I'm wrong.

Killers of the Flower Moon has been in development for a long time and it was worth the wait. I enjoyed it but didn't love it. I love how some of these streaming services are allowing legendary directors to do their own thing, but you feel every minute of the 206-minute runtime. If there was ever any doubt that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the greatest actors of all-time, then his performance here should put those doubts to rest. He literally transforms his face to deliver every line. Lily Gladstone is another standout here and she gives a sad, heart-breaking performance.

Up next is Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. He's one of my favorite directors, so I've been looking forward to this one.

I just saw Poor Things and I think Emma Stone is a front-runner for Best Actress. As for Best Supporting Actor, I'm not sure how Mark Ruffalo doesn't take that easy.

I don't see anything beating it for Best Picture. I also think it's time for Nolan to win an Oscar for Best Director.

I've been on the Cillian Murphy bandwagon since I saw his haunting performance in June, but I just saw The Holdovers and I think Giamatti has a huge shot at it.

I adored the film, which was heightened for me because Giamatti graduated from the boarding school my mom has worked at for 35 years, Choate Rosemary Hall. Dominic Sessa, who plays Angus, went to Deerfield, which is Choate's main rival. You can tell both actors are familiar with boarding schools. It came through in their performances and chemistry.

People are really unhappy Robbie and Gerwig didn't get nominated. I don't think it's that big of a deal. I think it's more a case of Barbie is likely the only film nominated for Actress or Director the average person has seen so they have no reference level.

Oliver Stone said doing Barbie was beneath Ryan and he should be doing more important films.

Strange (to me only) because Oppenheimer kind of felt like a Stone film to me in places. It's probably the best picture of the year although I must say Nolan is far too in love with his method of recording sound. The last four films of his I've have hard time hearing some dialogue and it has to do with how he records his actors. He needs to fix that shit. lol

If they had a best scene category, that ending to Saltburn is already legend, love it!

My favs of the year were Spider-man Across the Universe, Poor Things, Saltburn and Barbie and The Color Purple, which deserved a lot more noms and Oppenheimer.

I still need to see Killers of the Flower Moon and Anatomy of a Fall and the Holdovers....

Thank you to everyone who participated. We have a new champion! Lurker was a co-winner years ago before we added the second tiebreaker. They also lost to me a few years with the first tiebreaker. So congratulations for taking sole possession of first place by way of the second tiebreaker. Lurker was the second person to submit their ballot all the way back on March 5th.

We had the fewest entries since we started the contest in 2010 (not counting the 2021 season which was the COVID year). Hopefully we can bump that up next year.

I thought it was a good show as well. I do think it's funny that the producers seem to think they saved time by making it at 7pm instead of 8pm and stating the runtime as 3.5 hrs. instead of 3 hrs. It always runs at about 3.5 hours, regardless. :lol:

Anyway, thought Kimmel was good. Some solid jokes in there. Agreed with feev about the Batman bit. Definitely a highlight for me.

I promise to try to be more Oscar-y next year! This was a weird couple of months: food poisoning, COVID Round 2, my writing conference... Lots of things that sucked away my movie time. :lol:

Gladstone was good. But no one was taking that statue from Stone this year. I knew Stone and RDJ were locks when the I left the theatre for those films.

I really enjoyed the show. I thought a lot of the focus was on the industry and all the people who make it possible. I really liked the introduction by actors for the acting categories, although I still do love seeing clips.

I'm still not sure what happened at the end. They were under timewise, so it was odd they didn't read the nominations. I think Pacino messed up, to be honest.

There were some great bits, the Batman and Cena bits in particular.

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have amazing chemistry and I can't wait to see the Fall Guy. Gosling in general is a national treasure.
