Fresh off starring in season two of HBO’s The White Lotus, Theo James has been set to lead new horror movie The Monkey, based on the short story of the same name by Stephen King.

The team behind the buzzy project includes genre supremo James Wan, creator of the The Conjuring Universe, and co-creator of the Saw and Insidious franchises.

Wan is producing with Atomic Monster partner Michael Clear (M3GAN), and C2 Motion Picture Group’s Jason Cloth (Joker) and Dave Caplan (Babylon). The supernatural story has been adapted for the screen by genre specialist Osgood Perkins (Longlegs) who will also direct.

Much filmmaking potential there.

And now, my customary "I've just learned of an upcoming short story adaptation" lament:

While novels require extensive cutting to fit a standard length film, short stories often are fine as they are, yet producers/script writers etc. adapting short stories almost always feel the need to bloat the story's scope, thereby diluting, distorting, and obscuring the things that made the source story worth adapting in the first place.

A faithfully adapted The Monkey could make for a tense, spooky 90-minute horror ride - please don't fuck it up!

[Side note: I used to have to "hide" my Skeleton Crew hardcover in my closet because the cover (with The Monkey) gave me the creeps pretty good.]

Sounds like they expanded it by adding a touch of It:

...when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good...

I missed this was directed by Osgood Perkins. I'm intrigued now. Blackcoat's Daughter is one the best horror flicks in the last 20 years. Greta and Hansel not so good. I will check it out.
