I've been slacking!

I hope we get a little bit more participation this year. It's always more fun with lots of players.

The Rules

Oscar night is right around the corner, so I'm going to post the rules for those who might not be familiar with them. Please tell your friends from other boards to come on over and join us. The more the merrier.

You have until showtime on Sunday, March 12, 2023.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, whomever has the closest number without going over is the winner. If the tie remains, the person who submits their ballot earliest is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have some time before Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess.

Returning this year:

Returning this year will be the online ballot submission I created. Of course, ballots can still be submitted here. https://tinyurl.com/OscarContest2023

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

And the nominees are...

I thought my joke was pretty funny myself.. but that's ok I'll take the negative Rep with a smile.

So Anyway,
I'm disrespectful when I'm joking about an individual on the threads but..
Kris is well within his rights to call another human being off the threads an "Entitled Bitch" and mean it.

Seriously, how condescending can you be ?

Sorry Kris but my response was not for you, it was for T-dog.

Again, another condescending statement, this time from you Kris... but I'm still OK with my joke about YOU being the bitch, I still think it was funny.
But since you jumped in.. Are you really that thin skinned, that you have to be constantly stroked by your fan club.
I've been told that you now deem yourself as the "Worlds TOP authority on all things Stephen King" but I didn't think that also carried over to simple everyday opinions about.. "well everything"

https://deadline.com/2022/12/international-feature-oscar-shortlist-joyland-last-film-show-1235204487/

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today revealed the 15-film shortlist of movies that will advance to the nominations process for the Best International Feature Film Oscar. As we have previously reported, this is a year without a hands-down front-runner, and all of the movies in our preview have made the cut. See the full shortlist below.

While there were no jarring snubs on AMPAS’ shortlist, one film we weren’t sure about making the cut is India’s submission, Last Film Show, which did make it. This is the first time that India has been shortlisted since Lagaan was nominated 20 years ago. Along with Pan Nalin’s Last Film Show, a testament to the whole of the Indian market is that another movie, RRR, has been recognized by U.S. bodies in other categories.

Breaking out some more interesting details, this is the first time that a movie from Pakistan has been on the roster. Saim Sadiq’s Joyland debuted in Cannes as the first Pakistani movie ever in Official Selection and won the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard. It was then subject to a ban in its home country over censorship, which was later reversed.

Elsewhere, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths is in the mix for Mexico, marking his third time on the shortlist.

Here’s the full list of 15 on the shortlist, in alphabetical order by country:

Argentina, Argentina, 1985
Austria, Corsage
Belgium, Close
Cambodia, Return to Seoul
Denmark, Holy Spider
France, Saint Omer
Germany, All Quiet on the Western Front
India, Last Film Show
Ireland, The Quiet Girl
Mexico, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths
Morocco, The Blue Caftan
Pakistan, Joyland
Poland, EO
South Korea, Decision to Leave
Sweden, Cairo Conspiracy

My own predictions for the International shortlist were here: https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?363-General-Movie-Discussion-**please-mark-spoilers**&p=1266186&viewfull=1#post1266186

Looks like I got 8 of 15 right, which is not great. I feel like Brazil's Mars One and Ukraine's Klondike are the biggest snubs for me.

Really? I feel the opposite. It's been on my radar ever since it dropped on Netflix, there's been so much buzz about it since at least the summer, but it's dubbed on Netflix and not in its original language so I still haven't seen it.

I'm in the minority I guess. I didn't get Banshees at all. I watched it without knowing what was going to happen and I just didn't believe. Maybe it's some kind of metaphorical junk that went over my head, but I really disliked it.

I'll add, since I watch all the award shows before the Oscars - what was with the Critics having two winners on stage at same time. NO.

I don't think there was anything metaphorical that went over your head, that's probably why you didn't enjoy it. You were probably expecting something more profound when there really isn't anything.

It's about friendship and how people change over time. What I found interesting is that Colin Farrell's character is a genuinely nice guy who ends up changing himself for the worse just to please another person.

I think they lost me when the guy started with the sheep shears. I did not believe that for a moment. Only if the guy was drunk or insane and he didn't really seem either.

I did watch The Menu today. I'll take it over the Banshees anyday.

Anyone else annoyed that sequels are eligible for adapted screenplay? They are not adapting a previous work in any real sense. They’re an original screenplay based on preexisting characters. In most cases, characters from an original screenplay. I don’t think that should qualify. Or even things like Joker, based on the comics characters but it’s a wholly original story, it’s not actually adapting any comics.

I think this is a pretty good field of nominees. Everything Everywhere All At Once is my favorite film of the year, so I'm very happy to see all the love for that one. I also loved Banshees, so I'm good with those nominations as well.

As always, there are a few glaring snubs along with some head-scratching inclusions. The biggest omission for me is Decision to Leave not getting nominated for Best Foreign Film. I could make an argument it should have been nominated for Best Picture, let alone Best Foreign Film. Park is a well-respected director too, so I'm not sure what happened there.

I know it's a polarizing film, but I thought Babylon should have been nominated for BP. I thought Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt were deserving of nominations as well. While Top Gun: Maverick had a great showing, I can't help but think it was snubbed for Best Cinematography.

I'm not really understanding all the love for The Fabelmans. I thought Michelle Williams gave a very uneven performance. I also don't think it's a lead performance. Judd Hirsch also got a nomination. He appears in exactly one scene, a scene I missed while in the bathroom. Lastly, the fact that Avatar gets a Best Picture nomination is an absolute joke. It's an average movie at best.

I have no doubt there will be a lot of discussion about the fact that no women were nominated for Best Director. Viola Davis in The Woman King and Danielle Deadwyler in Till getting snubbed will most surely become a topic of discussion. I never like getting bogged down by such talks. There were quite a few people of color nominated in the acting categories, and I'm not sure there was a female director more deserving than the men that were nominated.

I still need to see Tar, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking. I didn't think Tar looked that interesting, but the buzz is impressive. I loved the trailer for Triangle of Sadness, but that film seemed to disappear. The BP nomination is a surprise. Women Talking looks very good and has a stellar cast.

Tar will be streaming this Friday on Peacock, so I’m excited.

My biggest pleasant surprises were Paul Mescal and Ana de Armas. Aftersun was a very small and quiet film that at first I wasn’t sure I even liked, but I couldn’t stop thinking about. It’s now one of my favorites of the year and it’s great to see him get the nom. And also Ana for Blonde! This movie got so much hate and vitriol thrown at it, but I think it’s mostly misplaced and misunderstood. I thought the film was tremendous and her performance was indeed one of the best of the year, so memorable and heartbreaking. Great seeing Ana’s name popping up in several precursor awards and also recognized by the Academy, quieting those critics.

Oh, good. I will definitely check that out.

I've heard nothing but great things about Aftersun. I can't wait to check that one out too. You're one of the first people I've heard that loved Blonde. Usually, people are applauding her performance, but then mention the film wasn't very good.

When I read Blonde reviews on Letterboxd I feel like physically facepalming. Maybe it’s just me but I thought it was a masterpiece. It’s very very surreal and haunting. But all of the criticisms about it don’t ring true to me. One of the better reviews I saw correctly said that if this were directed by David Lynch, people would be celebrating it.

One of my friends who’s also a big Marilyn fan also loved it as much as I did and she said most of the hate appeared to be “virtue signaling” basically, people parroting some supposedly pro-feminist talking points, but actually doing the opposite. We both felt this movie understood Marilyn and treated her with respect, while showing what her experience of fame must’ve been like, keeping in mind this was an adaptation of a fictional novel, not a biopic as such.

It will be for sure in my Top 10 for the year.

It’ll be a while but I’ll try to make my list before the Oscars. I’ve expanded my usual 30 to 35, too, but I still have lots of 2022 movies still to watch that should make my list, like Joyland. Hope to get to them in the next couple of months before working on my Top 35 of 2022.

I don't get all the love for the Everything/Everywhere movie. I thought the concept of the movie was cool but the execution was just stupid to me. Now it wasn't as horrible as that Green Knight movie or that incredibly bad White Noise movie, but seriously, hot dog fingers?!!! Sorry I wasted my time watching it.

Really? The film actually has a ton of heart. It really made me think about life and my journey and how we have to be happy where we are and not always wish for things to be different.

I felt better about life after leaving the theater, something that is really hard to do.

You're missing out. Maverick is really good and couldn't be more different than the first. I don't get the hype for the Tars (Tar and Avatar).

Tar is an obvious Oscar bait film with a great performance from Blanchett and little else. Tar's biggest sin is completely wasting Noémie Merlant, who was so brilliant in Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

As for Avatar, I will never understand the love for that franchise. It's so derivative.

can win 1-2-6 Oscars.
9 nominations for a German Netflix film. I still can't believe it.

Very good show! Some amazing fashion. I cheered for Brendan Fraser and Michelle Yeoh. Also, Babylon was robbed of that Best Score Oscar, that was one of the best scores in a long time, not just this year. The music was so important to the genius of that movie and I’ve listened to the score over and over since seeing the film. Not sure how I did overall but happy that I called the seven Oscars for EEAAO!

Thank you to everyone for participating. I appreciate it. There were some big scores this year. We had a 2 way tie this year!

Mae and T-Dogz both tied with an impressive score of 18. They both correctly guess that Everything Everywhere All at Once would win 7 Oscars. Since Mae submitted her form yesterday, she is the 2023 winner! Please check my work. It's late.

Mae - 18 (Winner by second tiebreaker)
T-Dogz - 18
Feev - 17
Lurker - 16
Servant - 15
Rodney - 15
Matt - 11
RF - 11
Stocker - 7

11 ain't bad considering the only films I've seen are Top Gun, The Whale, and Avatar 2. I haven't paid any attention to awards season at all either.

Heather! Come back to the Oscar Contest! You were once a queen.

I'm so out of the movie loop these days I didn't even know the Oscar's were on last night until I saw a post on fb by you about the contest  I tuned into the beginning, but only watched the first couple of awards. It's so hard to watch when you're not familiar with any of the films, most I haven't even heard of. Hopefully this will be the year I get back into movies.

I was happy to hear that Sarah Polley won for Women Talking. I've been of fan of her since her Avonlea days.

You saw two more than I did, and I also got 11.

By the way, lots of awards pundits had Cate winning for the longest time and some or most switched to Michelle right at the end, but I was always confident she would win ever since the nominations were announced. Couldn't be happier for such a well-deserved role and career.

I submitted my form yesterday hungover af and not knowing pretty much anything about the current Oscar race. Next year I'll actually try, I swear!

The show itself was cool. He gets a lot of hate but I always think Kimmel does a great job. He's funny and he knows just how pompous the whole event is anyway.

So glad EEAAO won. It was the best film of last year and I love seeing creativity & originality on that scale get rewarded. Lmao @ the Cocaine Bear too.

And Congrats Mae!

Yeah it's not often that Best Picture goes to my personal #1 movie of the year, but it's happened now twice recently with EEAAO and Parasite.

Oh and thank you for the congrats, everyone, but T-Dogz did great as well!

I think I remember you mentioning that you haven't been to the theater in a while. Do you think that's why you're not as into movies in recent years?

I thought the show was really good. It moved along pretty smoothly. I thought Kimmel did a nice job with the monologue. The show wasn't overly political and the speeches were very strong. I loved the WB montage. I eat that shit up.

I'm so happy for Everything Everywhere All at Once. It's one of the best movie experiences I've had in years. I remember leaving the theater and thinking to myself, "Damn, that film was amazing. Now I'm going to have to work my ass off to convince people to watch it because it's destined to be a film that nobody ever sees." Boy, was I wrong!

Mae, I believe this is your second win. Both times have been on a 2nd tiebreaker, which is pretty cool.

It was a pretty smooth show. That said, I didn't think it was all that entertaining of a show, either. None of the comedy bits really worked for me. Kimmel is just so milquetoast these days. He's not a bad host, but he's not a good one either.

For me the highlight of the show was the guy (I think he won for makeup) said "my mom is up there somewhere, I'm sure she'll scream" *SCREAMS* "there she is!"

I don't really need comedy bits, or anything. Just do the awards.

I don't really have any complaints about the show. It was fine. The speeches were the best part because it seemed that many of the winners were genuinely surprised, humbled, and grateful by their wins, which was nice to see. I like Kimmel both as a host and interviewer, but wish the Academy would branch out and get some fresh blood to host the show.

You have to appreciate the absurdity of the moment: Nobel prize winner. Important activist who's as far removed as you can possibly be from celebrity gossip. The set up of a you know, Big Serious Important Question about to be asked… "do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?" LOL
