So, I've always been a collector, ever since I was a kid, be it comic books, toys, books. But I've only been collecting King for a few years. Always loved King, Barker and all things horror but had told myself to try to stay away from collecting King because of the cost and addictive nature of collecting him. Of course I failed. Collecting Stephen King is like when you get your first tattoo or you're eating potato chips, you just can't stop at one.

With that, I'd like to showcase some of the items in my collection. I'm not much of a photographer so nothing fancy and in no particular order.

Thank you. Very honored. I really enjoy finding and collecting inscribed editions. I find I enjoy that more than collecting flat signed and/or limited editions. I especially like finding ones with quirky or unusual inscriptions.

I've always wanted a lettered edition of Mephisto In Onyx. Been looking (passively) for years. I do have the S/L, and 1st hardcover. It's also a great short story. Of course Ellison is a great writer.

Agreed on Ellison and the story.
I got this by pure happenstance, a few years ago. The dealer I bought this from, found this and another book I bought, in a storage locker he won in an auction.
It's a bit pricey but Camelot Books has a copy for sale.

The Talisman was in OK shape but the low price and inscription was well worth it.

Signed limiteds and lettereds are still a massive part of any King collection, still cannot help thinking how much more history these carry.
Lovely examples.

Thank you Alec. Always appreciated! While I have a bunch of King lettered and limiteds and I love a well produced limited, I agree with your sentiment, there's a story and history behind the inscriptions that I find adds an extra level of enjoyment to my collecting experience.

Danse Macabre PB:

Night Shift PB:

This was the book that hooked me on King when I was a kid. Loved the creepy cover art by Don Brautigam.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-121.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-111.jpeghttp://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-15.jpeg

Misery:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail5.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-14.jpeg

I lucked out in getting 3 out of 4 of this book lot. From what I understood from the seller, these were books King gifted to a friend. Ted Warner was a VP at the now defunct Casco Bank and Trust in Maine. Stephen King was his client and a personal friendship developed.

Night Shift:

My first purchase from Betts Books. Hope to be able to purchase more in the future.

The Ideal Genuine Man Trade HC:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-19.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-91.jpeg

I've never looked into large print editions of King titles. Not signed but when I saw this, just thought it was cool looking. Liked the UK cover art.

ISIS Night Shift:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-72.jpeg

A couple of old and new signed ephemera.

A signed invite/pass to the 1999 Vermont Library Conference. Stephen King was the keynote speaker. His speech on May 26th was entitled The Bogeyboys and it was about adolescent violence in schools.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-20.jpeg

A 1st edition copy of Black House with the Constant Reader letter and signed Dark Tower book mark:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-211.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-231.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-221.jpeg

And lastly, for this listing, the book that got me hooked on collecting King inscribed books. I acquired this from Topper Helmers, a former Disney Imagineer and an illustrator/artist that worked for DC and Marvel, to name a few. He got the book signed at the Forbidden Planet in NYC on 4/26/83.

Damn you Stephen King! Why must I seek out your signatures? It's my new heroin. Anyways, here's bunches of new and old stuff in no particular order.

These first two appeared recently in the Your New P&J thread.

Carrie:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-113.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail7.jpeg

This below was signed at the Savannah Book Festival in 2012.
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/s-l1600-13.jpg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/s-l1600-22.jpg

The Shining:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-83.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/s-l1600-32.jpg

I saw this online a while back but before I could pull the trigger, it was gone. But recently it popped up again at auction and I was able to obtain it.

The Shining PB in a nifty custom traycase:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-171.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-191.jpeg
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-151.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-161.jpeg

I was able to get an upgrade on The Talisman. My other copy is pretty beat up.
The Talisman:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-101.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-112.jpeg

With these inscriptions, I try to find the history, if possible. These next two come from an LA based author by the name of Michael Gregg Michaud. He's written a bunch of short stories and a few books, mainly biographies. His most well known being a biography on Sal Mineo.

Skeleton Crew:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-66.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-74.jpeg

Different Seasons:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-123.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-132.jpeg

I was finally able to add a copy of The Stand and Salem's Lot to my collection.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-102.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-114.jpeg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-84.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-92.jpeg

With this copy of Four Past Midnight, it was inscribed to Darrell Henline. Darrell Henline was the founder of After Dark magazine and editor and publisher of the SoHo Weekly News a direct competitor of The Village Voice at the time it existed.

The Best American Short Stories 2007 PB:

Always liked this book, Creepshows. Not signed by Stephen King but signed by a bunch of contributors at a Dark Delicacies signing in 2001. Signees include Editor Stephen Jones, Mick Garris, Cynthia Garris, Bernie Wrightson, Dennis Etchison, Night Flyer director, Mark Pavia and two others I'm unfamiliar with.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-131.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-122.jpeg

I really liked this traycase to the Century's Best Horror Fiction by CD. Regrettably, my only Dolso case. The case was bought empty but I filled it with trade editions of volume I & II.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-110.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail6.jpeg

And finally, I'm a big fan of Michael Whelan, like many here. He's one of the artists, back in the day, that inspired me to go to art school. This was an associates copy of The Art of Michael Whelan and it came with a cool extra remarque.

Sadly fewer signed 1st editions on display compared to a few years ago. However you have certainly gained some ground with these latest purchases.

Sadly fewer signed 1st editions on display compared to a few years ago. However you have certainly gained some ground with these latest purchases.
The signed “It” proof is fabulous, that really does deserve a tray case of its own.
Congratulations Elliot. First class.

Thank you Alec. Always much appreciated. It would be nice to see more people display their collections, especially signed firsts. I never thought of a tray case for the It proof. I'll definitely have to try to get something done on that front. Thanks again!

Some new additions:

I came across this while surfing around recently and thought it was a pretty cool Stephen King calendar. This was a bookseller incentive for promoting the paperback release of The Eyes of the Dragon.

!988: The Year of Stephen King:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/thumbnail-125.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/thumbnail-134.jpeg

I wanted something to protect and display my IT proof. Instead of trying to get a custom traycase made, I found a wood box that I thought would fit the bill. So with a little bit of customizing, I came up with this. I don't think it came out too shabby.

IT presentation box:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/thumbnail-222.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/thumbnail-29.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/thumbnail-212.jpeg

Inscribed Gerald's Game:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/thumbnail-163.jpeg http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/thumbnail-173.jpeg

I've been searching for a Stephen King inscription where he wished someone a Happy Halloween for some time now. As we are now officially in October, somehow, somewhere something aligned for me and I finally came across a Halloween inscription. :excited: Now, to be honest, this did put me temporarily in the red but it was well worth it. I've learned the hard way, when an opportunity has arisen and I've passed on it, I never get that opportunity again. So I clicked add to cart. For a 40+ year old insert and book, they were both in amazing shape.

The Monkey insert from the November 1980 Gallery magazine as well as The Book of the Sixth World Fantasy Convention 1980 with a photo of King from the signing:

So, I've decided to dip my toe into Stephen King proofs and manuscripts. Just a couple to start with so I can get a feel for them. Way too many at this point to go whole hog into collecting. I'll probably pick up some more here and there, especially if it's certain titles or if I come across an affordable signed and inscribed one.

Pet Sematary 2nd state proof:

This copy was in good shape, some sun fade on the spine. The reason I wanted this particular copy was because of the inserted letter from the Doubleday Editor-in-Chief.

It certainly is a collection in itself.
“Danse Macabre” and “The Regulators” are wonderful. The latter being a beautifully penned inscription and signature.
Always a treat.

Interesting.
I take Lomotil daily. Lomotil is now a Schedule V drug due to possible abuse. Is Lomotil a controlled substance? Lomotil is a Schedule V controlled substance, which means it has a medical use but may be misused. It contains small quantities of narcotics (powerful pain relievers also called opioids). Diphenoxylate, one of the ingredients in Lomotil, is itself a Schedule II controlled substance.

It's interesting that Peter Schneider chose that particular medication, to write on the check. Wonder what made him choose that?
