It's time.

Welcome to the 2022 Oscar Contest! We should have a somewhat normal Oscar season this year. At least more normal than last year. There's a lot of Oscar type films that are starting to be released, so I thought it was about time to create our Oscar thread.

The Rules

Oscar night is right around the corner, so I'm going to post the rules for those who might not be familiar with them. Please tell your friends from other boards to come on over and join us. The more the merrier.

You have until showtime on March 27, 2022.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, whomever has the closest number without going over is the winner. If the tie remains, the person who submits their ballot earliest is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have some time before Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess.

Returning this year:

Returning this year will be the online ballot submission I created. Of course, ballots can still be submitted here. https://tinyurl.com/OscarContest2022

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

Last week alone I saw a handful of films that should be prominent come Oscar night.

Kristen Stewart is the early front runner for Best Actress for her complete embodiment of Princess Diana in Spencer. The film should also get nominations for costume design and Production design.

Wes Anderson's latest whimsical romp The French Dispatch should garner a lot of attention. I could see a number of nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design, Score. That being said, I'm not sure I see any acting nominations because it really is an ensemble piece.

I adored Last Night in Soho, but it seems to be polarizing people. At the very least, I could see Costume Design and Original Score nominations.

Dune was a massively beautiful film, but it might not have captured the hearts as much as it captured the minds of viewers. That said, it's a lock for Visual Effects. I think he has a real shot at a Best Picture nomination as well.

There are a few films that came out a little while ago that I hope are remembered. Jessica Chastain's amazing performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye and the Sundance darling CODA.

A few other upcoming films that should get Oscar buzz are King Richard, Nightmare Alley, House of Gucci, The Tragedy of Macbeth, Belfast, West Side Story, Cyrano, The Power of the Dog, Licorice Pizza, C'mon, C'mon among others.

I can't stand K Stew.

French Dispatch should get nominations for: Direction, Production Design, Art Direction, Costume Design, Original Score. Chance for cinematography. If anyone gets an acting nomination is well likely be Del Toro.

Sadly Nic Cage is sure to be overlooked for Pig.

I would be tickled pink if Nicolas Cage gets a nomination! Pig will definitely make my Top 30 of 2021.

One of my favorite parts of Oscar season is this:

https://www.thewrap.com/oscars-international-race-2021-complete-list/

Here is the list of the 93 films that have been submitted to the Academy for the Oscars Best International Feature Film category for 2021, with descriptions and links to trailers, when available.

These films were all included on lists of films sent to voters in the category, but some have not had their qualifying runs or been vetted by the Academy. While some may turn out to be ineligible before the Academy releases its official list of qualifying films in December, instances of films not qualifying after being made available to Oscar voters are infrequent.

Here are the 15 movies I'd expect to be shortlisted (the five nominees I can see are bolded, with The Worst Person in the World probably winning):

Algeria (Héliopolis)
Bangladesh (Rehana)
Colombia (Memoria)
Costa Rica (Clara Sola)
Denmark (Flee)
France (Titane)
Iceland (Lamb)
Indonesia (Yuni)
Iran (A Hero)
Ireland (Foscadh)
Italy (The Hand of God)
Japan (Drive My Car)
Kosovo (Hive)
Mexico (Prayers for the Stolen)
Norway (The Worst Person in the World)

Slowly the world realizes they don’t care about movie / TV stars getting awards and their heads blown up even more so. Literally no one is taking about the Globes and it seems no one cares much. Sad… but i see the Oscars following this path since viewership has declined over and over year to year.

I don't know why anyone cares about Oscars ratings and viewership. Not like they will stop awarding Oscars after 100 years. It will never happen.

The Oscars will never go that route and the only reason why the Globes went that route is because of controversy. The uptick in COVID cases made it an even easier call to cancel.

It's not that people don't care about TV/Movie stars getting awards, it's the kind of films that are being honored. Most audiences only care about a certain kind of film and those films aren't honored, for the most part, come Oscar season.

I know you loved Being the Ricardos, Mae, but if it were up to me, it wouldn't have gotten any nominations.

I was shocked Denis didn't get a directing nomination. His hands are all over that film. Dune is not even close to a success without him.

I've been touting Nightmare Alley for a while, so I was so happy to see it get nominated for Best Picture.

I was bummed to see Caitriona Balfe left out of the Best Supporting Actress category. It's time for new blood. The Academy has to let the whole Judi Dench thing go. She's barely in the film and hardly gives the best performance. While we are talking about Belfast, it's Jamie Dornan who should have been nominated and not Hinds.

As for the rest, I'm impressed with The Power of the Dog. 12 total nominations and 4 for acting nominations is pretty amazing. I loved the film, so I'm happy with that.

I was also very pleased to see Mitchells vs the Machines get an Animated Film nomination.

Shots fired! Wow, PotD really angered Sam Elliot. His arguments are a bit asinine. Lost some cool points there, Sam. Darn.

Sam Elliott Blasts ‘Piece of Sh*t’ ‘Power of the Dog’: What Does Campion ‘Know About the American West’?

"Why in the f*ck does she shoot this movie in New Zealand and call it Montana and say, ‘This is the way it was’? That f*cking rubbed me the wrong way, pal," Elliott told Marc Maron. (https://www.indiewire.com/2022/03/sam-elliott-slams-power-of-the-dog-marc-maron-podcast-1234703155/)

I mean some of the greatest westerns ever made were in Italy. It's not a western but an anti-western based on a book by a guy that actually grew up in the time period and went to college in Montana, where the movie is set and drew on his own experiences of living on a ranch.

The term Western can't be slapped on everything. The main ingredients of what makes a Western a Western are not present in Power of the Dog. To me, the film is a frontier film.

There's not a bullet shot in the entire film. Name a Western where that happens?

Elliott comes off looking really bad here. Honestly, considering the film is directed by a woman, his comments come off as misogynistic.

Oh yeah these are tomorrow night. It's sad how little I don't care. I'm very unhappy with the Academy these days. I don't feel right even predicting all the craft awards they've deigned too unimportant to air live.

Oscar night is here!

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

Good Luck!

You can submit your online ballot here. https://tinyurl.com/OscarContest2022

Well, that was a memorable night for some not-so-movie-related reasons! We will get to that tomorrow. On to the results!

Myself, T-Dogz and Mae dropped some huge scores! In the end, T-Dogz and I tied with 21. T-Dogz correctly predicted that Dune would win 6 awards, making him the winner by first tiebreaker! Nice job, T-Dogz. You technically didn't correct your ballot by showtime, but neither of those awards were impacted, so no harm, no foul.

The unedited moment. I cannot believe people thought this was staged. Rock has declined to press charges but the DA could still press charges for assault.

Just my opinion but I really think Smith should be expelled from the Academy and made to give the Oscar back.

20, 21 wow! Congrats all. I never did get to Dune, but I squeezed in West Side Story. I think I saw more movies and docs this year than I usually do.

I thought that Will/Chris thing was scripted - I mean it looks to me like Smith is laughing while Jada is obviously making a face. Then I heard the clip with what Will said - that was censored on TV - and that did not sound scripted. One of the reporters for CNN said his wife has an auto-immune disease that causes hair loss. I'm gonna follow this one. I'd like to see the bruise.

And I must say Schumer surprised me. She seemed to be on her best behaviour.

Tommy
03-28-2022, 12:32 AM
That bruise may very well end Smith's career. If we punch/slap everyone that makes a joke, a lot of teeth are going to be on the ground. Ricky Gervais hosting the Golden Globes comes to mind. Rock could have fell backwards and busted his head wide open. Very lucky it was not any worse. If Schumer had made that same joke, would Smith's response been OK?

Chris should be praised for standing tall after getting bitch-slapped but his joke was out of line. Dude's wife has an auto-immune disorder and it's not a secret. Lay off. Meanwhile Will's too sensitive and must recognize a similar reaction from, say, a character actor, would ban them for life and ruin their career. I love Denzel for speaking with Will during a break. Will needs to get with Chris and hug it out.

mae
03-28-2022, 03:51 AM
So they cut out eight awards to streamline the show and yet it was still over the three-hour mark, and I saw in one article it was even longer than last year?

Also, I knew I should've went with the consensus picks for Best Actress, Best Documentary, and Original Screenplay, in which case I would've been at 100%! But I was hoping these would be the surprises. Not The Slap.

OldCrow88

Yeah I think we could trade a few more live moments celebrating the craft for an awkward James Bond or Godfather montage.

What did everyone think about the In Memorium segment? It was a bit "much" for me with the gospel choir, individual speakers, and video clips all wrestling for attention. Though I did like the celebratory rather than somber tone.

Will laughed at the joke too. Nothing is sacred to comedians. I keep thinking about the shot Will took at Eminem about not having to swear to sell records. Seems Will knows some choice swear words after all. I can only imagine what the original Aunt Viv must have went through.

He makes a lot of good points. Will's acceptance speech after that was just plain fucked up.

Remember when Michael Moore spoke out against the Iraq invasion and the audience booed him?
Remember when The Native American woman Marlon Brando sent to refuse his Oscar out of protest was nearly assaulted by John Wayne and mocked by Clint Eastwood?

The audiences then did not stay quiet but for this assault, the audience was dead silent. WTF?

CODA = Child of Deaf Adult. It's an excellent movie if you get a chance to see it. It's on Apple's streaming service -- so ironic that Netflix has been chasing the big awards for years only to watch Apple swoop and take the first big one for a streamer.

Well I guess its safe to say Will Smith was the biggest hit of the night.

No but seriously, I managed to make it about 20 minutes in before I got bored and changed it. Cool for Coda I guess. Have no idea what its about tho.

Did you not read my Best Films of the Year list?!?

Anyway, the Will Smith thing is played out at this point. It overshadowed the entire event including Smith's win. The rest of the show was good. I'm not sure why, but the Oscars are becoming more and more predictable. I was happy to see Belfast get Screenplay, I really enjoyed CODA, so I had no issues there. I'm a huge Chastain fan, so I was rooting for her. I had no issues with any of the winners.

I don't like giving out some awards before the show. It felt canned and awkward.

The In Memoriam was ridiculous. The Gospel singers were literally center stage, not the actual people being honored. They got too cute with that. I like some of the anniversary stuff and I thought Amy Schumer did a nice job. I would still love to see more of the year in film being honored, but that never seems to happen.

The Oscars is a work function for these people and he committed violence in the workplace. Who here wouldn't get fired for that?

If a regular person had slapped Chris Rock, they would have put his ass in a jail under the jail.

I missed all the jokes about animated films being for kids and simply tolerated by adults due to the crazy slap circus but they really did a disservice to animated films with some of these statements.

Wake Up, Oscars: Animation isn't just for kids
"Animation for adults is a fact. It's happening. Let's call it cinema." (https://mashable.com/article/animation-oscars-2022-joke-phil-lord)

Could not agree more. Two of the top animated films of last year weren't even nominated: Cryptozoo and Mad God. Definitely not for kids.

Yup, you're welcome. They even made my Top of 2021 list, if you haven't seen it: https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?22854-Best-Films-of-This-Decade-(2020s)&p=1257077&viewfull=1#post1257077

Academy Starts Disciplinary Proceedings Against Will Smith, Expulsion on the Table

The Academy also claims that the "King Richard" star refused to leave the ceremony after being asked. (https://variety.com/2022/awards/news/will-smith-academy-expulsion-possibility-chris-rock-1235219383/)

There will probably be SAG consequences as well.

That he resigned? He won't be asked back ever, he won't be able to ever get nominated again and he does not get to be an Academy voter. Technically, the only thing for certain is the voting part but the other two things can still happen but I seriously doubt that they will.

Now, The Academy still has to make a decision about all of this too so I am assuming those other two things will be his consequences as well.

And that is what I said. The Academy meets again on April 18th to decide further consequences.

And this, very much this, Lady Gaga is just a lovely human being....

Etiquette expert says we've overlooked Lady Gaga's great kindness toward Liza Minnelli

The Oscars last Sunday night offered a touching and teaching moment (https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/etiquette-expert-kindness-lady-gaga-liza-minnelli)

Although, it does say something that simple common decency is so underappreciated that we need to applaud it when we see it.

Still, love you Gaga!!

Ten year ban from The Academy Awards for Will Smith whether in person or virtually. It doesn't say in any articles I've seen but I assume that means he cannot be nominated either? I mean if you cannot be there to accept it....
Now will come SAG's decision.

Man, I just watched, "House of Gucci"!! What a truly mediocre film. Cant believe it got nominations!!! Wasn't very accurate and the editing was Foccatta!! Acting wasn't much better IMHO. I must be getting old. I can't believe what Hollywood is putting out these days. Funny, but "Marvel" seems to be the only studio putting out anything decent these days. IMHO anyway.

Must be way past me these days. I just don't see the quality at all anymore with most other films.

It's definitely you.

Gucci was just okay, but Gaga was really good in it. In general, there are a lot of studios pumping out a ton of good films. Stuff like Dune, Power of the Dog, Nightmare Alley were fantastic, just to name a few.

If you're talking about mainstream films, then yes, you have a point. Besides Marvel films, there are not a lot of great mainstream films being released.

In regards to studios, A24 might be the best studio when it comes to pumping out quality productions. Unfortunately, the films aren't for everyone and probably won't appeal to you either.
