Tough choice. Went with Close Encounters since it's based on the real government footage of UFOs

Dang, two of my favorites. If channel surfing, I never go by either one. Coin flip went to Close Encounters.

I thought this was going to be Godfather in a landslide.

Not really, there are alotta Godfather haters on here. You could put it up against Legally Blonde and it would probably get half the votes

The Godfather still behind by one with two days to go. I love Close Encounters, but are we really going to lose one of the best films of all time in a quarterfinal?

I appreciate the shilling, but Close Encounters is also one of the best of all time, maybe not the extended version, but the certainly the original.

Could I ask what the differences are between the two?

Probably more than you wanted...https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075860/alternateversions...there's a mystery that is left in the original, one that forces more use of one's imagination.

There are 3 (or 4) versions.

1: original 1977 (run time 135min)
2: Special Edition released to theaters in 1980 (run time 133min)
3: directors cut - 1998 (run time 138min)
4: a version aired on ABC, but no video release

The special edition has some cuts and additions and is actually shorter then the original. The bigest addistion is:

It shows what happens after Roy enters the spaceship

I believe the directors cut is the combination (more or less) of the other two versions.

This page gives a more detailed description:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075860/alternateversions

There have been some good releases that include all three versions:
