And here we go!

This is the nominations thread for the fifth portion of The Great Movie Tournament (fifth of ten) where we'll nominate and second our favorite movies for the decade of the 1970s (from 1970 to 1979). For our purposes, an eligible film must be a feature narrative film (no short films or documentaries) and its first release date must be between January 1, 1970 and December 31, 1979 according to IMDb (sometimes films will premiere at festivals one year but have a wide release the following year; we'll use the IMDb and Wikipedia convention of the year of initial exhibition).

Participation is very much encouraged and extremely welcomed, but please do follow these guidelines for this nomination process (subject to adjustment):

You can nominate one film per post, and you can nominate another film after four other members have made their nominations.
You can second one film per post, and you can second another film after two other members have made their seconds.
If possible, please include a trailer and/or a scene from the film using Spoiler tags (this version http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/icons/spoiler.gif and delete the s in https for YouTube links when embedding a video, making sure to use the full URL from the address bar, not the sharing link).
Nominations can also be optionally accompanied by year of release and director.

Once 256 nominated films have been seconded, the tournament will begin, following the structure shown below (an overall event overview thread is posted with links to all the polls so members can easily navigate during the tournament). Each poll will be open for 7 days and any tiebreaker polls will be open for 4 days.

Round 1: 32 groups of 8 titles - top 6 move on
Round 2: 32 groups of 6 titles - top 4 move on
Round 3: 32 groups of 4 titles - top 2 move on
Round 4: 16 groups of 4 titles - top 2 move on
Round 5: 16 groups of 2 titles - top 1 moves on
Octofinals: 8 groups of 2 titles - top 1 moves on
Quarterfinals: 4 groups of 2 titles - top 1 moves on
Semifinals: 2 groups of 2 titles - top 1 moves on
Final: 1 group of 2 titles - top 1 is the winner

This post will be updated with the list of nominated and seconded titles as they come in. You can also keep up to date with this handy Google Sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rG1X70-mI2a9G9DwdtGDBJRP_eNUWm7kIxYCf8KxVqE/edit?usp=sharing).

As I always say, I believe most if not all of the nominations are made in good faith and we all believe these 256 (or however many) films deserve to be considered as some of the best of a given decade. So it's worth looking into every nomination, for sure. And then just see what looks and sounds good to you.

I got into film at a young age in the 80's... not a huge fan of the movies before my time but a few.. BUT I will be watching a lot of these that you all feel strongly about.

As I always say, I believe most if not all of the nominations are made in good faith and we all believe these 256 (or however many) films deserve to be considered as some of the best of a given decade. So it's worth looking into every nomination, for sure. And then just see what looks and sounds good to you.

Along those lines, and always in good faith...

I had previously threatened nominating Terrifying Girls' High School: Lynch Law Classroom (1973), and then considered perhaps Cloistered Nun: Runa's Confession (1976) or Delinquent Girl Boss: Worthless to Confess (1971). But a better representative of the Japanese pinky violence genre is Female Prisonor #701: Scorpion (1972). As far as I’m concerned it’s one of the the best the genre has to offer. Is it one of the best 256 films of the 1970s? Objectively, no, of course not. But goddamn if it’s not entertaining as hell. So I’m nominating it just to put it on the radar of folks who want to seek out something a bit off the beaten track. I’m not expecting it to be seconded, and I’m fine with that.

But in the interest of expanding horizons, if you are not familiar with the genre, just watch the trailer. Seriously. It tells you everything you need to know. (The trailer is age-restricted so it seems I can’t embed it).

I read it a few years ago after I saw the movie. I liked the book, but liked the movie more. I can see how it would be pretty scary for a young person's first foray into horror, though. I didn't like how almost every chapter of the book ended with an exclamation. "And then there was a strange sound!"
