Hi, gang. With the recent news that John would be selling his collection; I thought it would be nice to honor him by posting photos of items that you've purchased. To show John that he is still a very valuable member of our community and he will not be forgotten. That we may be fortunate enough to care for his collection until it's time to pass it on ourselves.

John passed away on December 9, 2020. Please continue to honor him by posting your purchases from his collection here. Thank you.

Great idea! I don’t collect anymore but otherwise I would have tried my best to secure that Cell proof. And I would have been honored to show a pic of it here. Looking forward to seeing people’s new pride/joys!

Thanks, guys. I figured it be a nice gesture to showcase John's collection. I'm not sure many of us have seen it all.

Also, Glen suggested a small bio about John's collecting history be included. That's a great idea as well and John is agreeable to it. Once he's feeling a little better and gets it written up, I'll edit it into the first post and let everyone know.

George...Do you mind sharing why you bought this item? For example, was this an item you'd be searching for for a while? Would be interested to hear the backstory behind some of these purchases and what it meant to finally land a long sought-after piece.

Back in 2014 I was the first to come across one of the FDNS Lettered/Gift proofs, then also managed to grab one of the ten Black Cover Internal Office proofs. I already had a White Tape Spine copy as well, so figured since I had the really difficult ones already out of the way why not try and collect a full set of FDNS proofs? That progressed pretty nicely until the Color and Black Tape Spine versions surfaced ... one copy of each known so far. Not impossible, and something to keep me busy looking for the next 50 years.

When I saw this manuscript I thought it would be a nice addition to the FDNS theme, and since it wasn't listed in the catalog I also thought it would be nice to reveal it to the community. This was actually the item I was talking with John about a few months back when he first announced he'd be parting with his collection but well before he decided it would be easier and better to go through David. That's why I prepped and was completely ready when David posted the first grouping, in case it was there ... and it was! It was my #1 item from John's collection, so I was pretty happy to finally be able to add it to my collection.

I have a similar document, but without the original envelope.

Mine is for an earlier book and says another number. I am not sure whether the number refers to the contact who got the document (it case it leaked?) or else.
My version also says "2nd draft" at the top left corner of the pages.

I am so happy to have received this amazing book. This was the last one I needed to complete my first edition collection.

John, your books are in such amazing condition. Rest assured this one is already in a slipcase from Jeff (I've had the slipcase for a couple years in anticipation) and behind glass doors in a dark room. It will be well taken care of.

For a while now I've been the custodian of the blue proof of IT from John's collection. He bought it many years ago from the daughter of an ex-employee of Viking.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/1_stack.JPG

I was able to "reunite" it with the printer's galleys that were used to make it:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/5_IMG_0189.JPG

The blue proof took quite a journey: forum member darkseer drove 45 minutes to pick it up from John's wife, and 45 minutes back. He mailed it the next day perfectly packaged to my forwarding address in Los Angeles (thanks again Mike!). From there it traveled in three days time to Belgium.

When I got it I emailed John to say that it had arrived safely. He did not reply for 2 weeks, which was very uncommon. Turns out at his nursery home they had moved him to a different room without any warning, to a room that had no WiFi. That got fixed eventually. He enjoyed the photos I sent him, and even gave facebook another try to see my post about the blue proof in the Rare King group.

Thanks again, John.

Thank you John and thank you David, these two arrived today.

Storm of the Century Manuscript Copy Sections 1 (First Draft March 30, 1997), 2 (First Draft April 10, 1997) and 3 (First Draft Apr 24, 1997). As King started writing SOTC in Dec 1996, I believe these to be actual first draft copies of his story versus something tied directly to the paperback & television movie two years later in 1999 (see that manuscript further down). Pretty interesting piece, I want to put it side by side with the 1999 version and compare the stories, see how much (if any) it changed. Anybody happen to know if King used these big old fasteners to hold his copies together? They certainly look like they've been on there a long time, aged and worn like the paper.

Storm of the Century Uncorrected Manuscript Copy of the 1999 Pocket Books Edition, White Paper with Black Tape Spine, Bound (already in the catalog) ....

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/20210108_222753.png

... and it's accompanying Publisher's Letter, not already in the Catalog. I wonder if John even knew he had this, it was folded up inside.

I received all of my items. The first is The Regulators in the comb binding with the name on the cover (only 12 of them made). The second it Desperation in two volumes. They are 2nd state and don't have any writing at all on the covers. Only 12 of these as well.
And the last item I got was the black proof of FDNS from CD I think also called a gallery proof. There were only 10 of these made. I feel grateful to add these to my John H collection.
P.S The 2nd state Desperation is listed here but not on that King proof site.

Congrats on the haul Mike, good stuff. John's master list shows the following for Desperation, the first two are yours:

Desperation manuscript two volumes comb binding printed cover and spine(12 copies?)
Desperation manuscript two volumes comb binding white cover and blank spine(12 copies?)
Desperation first state (“Steven”)
Desperation second state (“Stephen”)

Not sure what you mean by "but not on that King proof site.", as the 2nd state blank white covers is in the catalog. Some other proofs site?

Also, welcome to the FDNS Black Galley Proof Club :)

MikeDuke
01-29-2021, 06:17 AM
Hey George. I figured you had a black one because it was not listed in your want list.
The "other proof site" is this
http://zelig.io/
If you type in Desperation in the search box the only ones that come up are the ones with the names on the front. Not the blank ones that I have.
I know the ones I have are second state from this site. I am not sure but probably the first state is more desirable but I am happy to have this.
In The Regulators has what looks like are had drawings. I will try and take picks of these when I can.
Thanks again George and Bran.

So I guess it's not updated that often because there are a lot of proofs with unknown numbers. Unless they really are unknown. Even here there are a number that say un-known.
That's OK though. A little mystery is good.

Paul doesn't collect Proofs anymore (he's too busy collecting publishing contracts!) so he might not be updating at all. Solid numbers on quantities of proofs/ARCs published are often completely unknown. Unless someone has a contact in the individual publishing houses (like Brian Freeman at CD) who knows the info and is willing to share, it's often just guesswork based upon what shows up in people's collections. Proofs are meant to be internal working documents, so some publishers may not track quantities produced at all as technically they're not meant to be released to the public.

I’d really like to know who ended up with the skeleton crew material that John had from Shannon’s book sale. I never even saw it posted on Betts.

There’s still some more to come I think. It may be part of that? Maybe.

There was a lot of items that’s never surfaced. I know John sold some before David picked the lot up

I ended up with I think about 25 items. Mostly proofs about King (some that had been on my want list for YEARS), and anthology proofs...I think you've seen most of the pics on my Instagram.

I've only seen one Legends uncorrected proof available for sale and it was John's copy. Was lucky enough to grab that one.

Thanks for refreshing this thread, Herbertwest. Didn't know John personally, but the dude was a wealth of knowledge and huge contributor to this site. Definitely learned a thing or two from the guy.
