Now I do hope I'm placing this new thread where it belongs.

New kid on the publishing block: Lyra's Books, from the UK. No King yet, but hopefully that will change one day....Richard?? :)

From the moment I saw the photos from Lyra's soon to be released STARDUST (Neil Gaiman) I was sold! I had never read the book, actually never read anything by this particular author, but the photos screamed....buy me!

There will be three editions:

*the slipcased Standard edition, in mustard and blue:

FYI, Lyra's edition of Stardust has been discussed on the Collectible Neil Gaiman thread beginning here: https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?12082-The-Collectible-Neil-Gaiman&p=1190272&viewfull=1#post1190272

...which is not at all to say Lyra's doesn't deserve their own thread.

In addition to publishing special editions such as Stardust, they do rebinding work and also do custom work, including notebooks made for Gaiman himself (https://twitter.com/lyrasbooks/status/1102237637866340352).

Check out these rebindings (Lyra's twitter page is full of goodness):

Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy: https://twitter.com/lyrasbooks/status/1262715278485590021

Harry Potter: https://twitter.com/lyrasbooks/status/1237839620177420288

More Tolkien: https://twitter.com/lyrasbooks/status/1087444893688053761

...ok; time to stop.

Early on he took reservations but cut them off so he would have enough copies of each edition at public offering.

I have no idea what's next -been bugging Richard for a King limited, but that's easier said than done, obviously- but there might be a Hobbit somewhere down the road......:onfire:

I proudly own several of Rich's rebinds: Excorcist, LOTR, Earthsea, Harry Potter. He does incredible work with skill and careful attention to detail. And he's binding Stardust himself, by hand. I'm over the moon to be on the list.

I'm late to the party as usual since I'm not a Gaiman reader and wasn't following that thread. People will have to be extremely fast Saturday as I didn't see on the site a way to set up an account ahead of time to login to. Do the Lettered and Leather carry rights, Kris like at Suntup for the next preorder?

This is the only other publisher I've seen in recent years that matches Suntup for design and quality (if the product turns out as good as the pictures look). I'll be very curious to see if the interior design aspects are similarly excellent.

Hi Shachar,

As you will likely have noticed, we had some pretty major problems with our website at the pre-order for Stardust. Some people were able to see the payment links and some people weren’t. Firstly, we’d just like to apologise sincerely if this meant that you were unable to get the book of your choice. This is not the start we wanted for this project and we are extremely sorry for everything that has happened.

We can see that you successfully went through checkout and made an order. To add insult to injury, there may also be a problem with some of the earliest payments being processed by PayPal. Some of them are being put on a hold and a couple have been cancelled.

Your payment is one that has been put on hold. Let us first just stress that your order is secure and no payment has been taken at our end. PayPal are holding it temporarily. The book/s is/are yours. What PayPal have advised is that you find the order in your PayPal account and cancel it at your end. When you have been fully refunded we will manually issue you with an invoice. We are not expecting this to happen immediately, it takes as long as it takes. Of course, if you wish to now cancel your order please let us know. We are here to help you with this so please message us if you need any assistance.

Once again, we’re extremely sorry about this. To say it has been a disaster is an understatement! We are trying our best to get things back on track.

Kind regards and apologies again for the inconvenience caused over the last 12 hours.

Rich @ Lyra’s Books

Everyone that ordered or tried to order probably received this, but I thought I'd post it here as well:

I'm sure a lot of you are aware that we experienced some disastrous problems with the website on Saturday evening when the pre-order opened. There was a glitch in the website which meant that some people were able to see the ‘add to basket’ buttons and some weren’t.

As you can imagine, this is not something I wanted to happen and I’m lost for words to express how saddened I am by it all. I had wanted everyone to have a fair and equal chance at getting any of the remaining editions after the equally disastrous early reservation decision a few months ago. Obviously, the major glitch we experienced at the weekend put paid to that idea.

It was always going to be a scramble for the Leather and Lettered editions but it should have worked a lot more smoothly. All I can offer to those people feeling upset or angry that their time was wasted is my apologies. I am so very sorry and please know that this isn’t how I wanted this project to begin.

I think next time (if there is a next time) we might look into alternative ways of doing the pre-order. Something where everyone is given a better chance at a copy. And no early reservations (which caused even more problems). I took those early reservations because I was uncertain how well this project would do. I was 100% wrong with my prediction and I am truly humbled that these books have caused such a strong response.

Once again, I am so sorry. I am heartbroken that this happened.

All the best,

Rich @ Lyra's Books

If Lyra's Books continues to publish books, it looks like it's going to be committed to quality craftsmanship and attentive customer service... Would be great to see another press continue to raise the bar (a la Suntup)...

Good many have paid. I have and of course all the pre orders too as he took money for all those before it went live

I just received the refund, and Rich stated that i needed to wait on the full refund before paying him again, and so i immediately paid my invoice.
Rich is a good man as i instantly received an e-mail from him saying that he received the payment and thanked me for it.

Lots more prior to this showing developments and photos, but regards shipping.....

Shipping information

Earlier on, we experienced some COVID related delays as well as one or two unexpected things that cropped up early in production. Among other things, some deliveries from suppliers were disrupted and bindery staff have had to take time off to quarantine. This has set us back a few weeks from where I hoped we'd be right now but the end is in sight.

I expect that we will begin shipping in a few weeks. So, some time around mid-November. I apologise for it being slightly later than intended but you never know what's around the corner with a project like this (and at a time like this!). I think next time I will give a quarterly estimate rather than a month!

Obviously, if this means you need to change your shipping address then do send me an email and I can do that for you no problem.

I will update on social media and via this email to subscribers when we have have a more accurate idea of exactly when shipping will begin.

Hello Kris,

I certainly hope but will see. No matter what, I don't think that the book will loose any value.
Suntup and Dragon Rebound has certainly raised the bar, and life (meaning covid) has been through in between, but we'll see what happen. At the moment, I can certainly hold on my second copy and see what happens, value wise.
But that also is depending on what happens, covid wise, if we all survive a second wave

For once in my life, I may get 2 copies of a valuable book, which I loved from months, even publicly claiming it, even when it was announced, so wil see what happens.

Sure, but that doesn't mean we should alll be wreckless and not giving a goddam f.

Age is not the only thing.
Probably a lot of the us has cholesterol, too much sugar in our blood and many other things, meaning that we're not going to see through an extrz 15 years.

And if you think that I sound pessimistic, think of 2020, in place where most of us (especially here, on a message board about book collecting) have access to more food than we physically need, and we'll probably have a big C within the next 20 years because we drank too much sodas and similarish food

PS : that was your heart-lightened message of the day. And you're all welcome

PS 2 : I don't think I will live more than the upcoming 20 years top. Maybe 1. Maybe 5. 10. 20. 50 Tough shit. I am ok with it.

I have received my Leather edition on Friday (UK resident). Rich is a genius madman, the book is breathtaking. Up there with Suntup Lettered editions in terms of quality - it is madness, especially for the price. Such a book is only made once every few years, just by looking at it is obvious that it takes a long time to put something like this together.

Can't believe that for me obtaining this book all boiled down to being in the right FB group and noticing a comment at the right time to pre-order. Somehow compensates for the aching black hole in my heart that's due to not owning a Numbered Misery (have all other Suntup numbereds, on the track since HoHH).

I did notice Charles Vess indicated that he might be illustrating an edition of 'The Wind in the Willows' for Lyra's Books - sounded like maybe a 2022 project? I think his style would work really well for that book.

I hope not. I'm looking forward to my copy of Stardust and admire Rich's work. I'm hoping he stays with more modern classics.

Mad Parrot is currently working on Wind in the Willows. If you aren't familiar with their prior work at Chester River Press and Deep Wood Press, check it out. The quality is outstanding. I have a copy of the Chester River Press Heart of Darkness and it is a gem.

JeremyM
11-29-2020, 02:28 PM
Yes - I'm aware of the upcoming Mad Parrot edition - the Zimakov illustrations are really nice. His work on the Centipede Press 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' was a factor in my deciding to pick up that edition. I'd still like to see what Vess would do with it, has a certain rustic, pastoral quality that I think would be a good fit. I do understand the sentiment about certain titles attracting a seemingly disproportionate number of nice/fine editions though.

And yes, the Chester River 'Heart of Darkness' is pretty well top of my 'want' list, along with probably a few hundred other collectors :) I'm giving some thought to the Deep Wood 'In the Penal Colony' - but the LEC edition is just lovely and not sure I can justify another copy, even with the new translation.

I understand what you mean now Kris.
Those are beautiful pieces of work and the new Stardust in all its editions is probably as good as you will see anywhere, first class.
Congratulations to all those collectors who have now one on their shelves or one in transit.
The rebound Tolkien’s I have seen before and they are fine examples, however this is one of Richard’s passions and many are commissions, but they are not published work for the Tolkien Estates. I can see how it could be easily construed that they are.

There has only been a few times in my book collecting life where I have been FLOORED. I mean fall off you chair, jaw hurts from your mouth spread so wide in awe... just flat out amazed. In fact, I can tell you those times. I can count them on one hand. My first lettered book which was IT from CD. The first time I seen my lettered Regulators. The day I opened the Suntup masterpiece's we all know as Misery. AND lastly..... today. I have seen a lot of books in my time... I love books. It gives me pure unadulterated joy. I love helping people get the ones they desire so much as I love the same for me. Which brings me to now. Today. And today Lyra's Stardust arrived. I bought all 4 books. I was not going to BUT am so glad I did. My hands were shaking holding these. All levels were hand made and it shows. Hand made by the press owner himself and the love he poured into each edition is evident in every piece and level. I am loyal to my small press publishers.. and only a few. Today I added Lyra Books to that shiort list. Now... if you will excuse me... I have to pick myself off the floor and wipe the drool off my chin. Cheers all... kris

Just opened one of my two leather books (not sure, whether to open or not the second copy, so far... although I don't plan on selling it for months / years), and I LOVE the first copy.

I dont have much comparison points in luxury books, as I only have gift editions otherwise, but from pictures I have seen, I don't think that any other limited looks as impressive.
It really is as nice as when I first saw it, more than a year ago when Rich was working on a prototype, and fell in love with it.

I am sooooo glad to have gotten it :)

Update from Rich Tong/Lyra's Books: interesting!

Well… I had hoped to approach the various announcements I have to make over the next couple of weeks in a slightly different order but, oh well! As some of you may be aware, another fine press has just announced that they will be publishing ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde this year. It seems that both of us have been secretly beavering away on the same project for many months! So yes, the next book to be published by Lyra’s Books will also be ‘Dorian Gray’, although I expect our versions to be quite different from one another. I’m hoping for the pre-order to happen sometime shortly before Christmas, perhaps January if it is unavoidable. Whatever happens, we are printing in December and binding in January/February. There are two other books lined up for next year and it’s possible, given this mini crisis, that I might just let you know what they are a long time in advance! That worked quite well for ‘Stardust’ so perhaps it’s the way forward with future titles.

The other key piece of news is this – I am creating a new imprint for Lyra’s Books. I had planned to give all the information about this and how rights and everything will work before announcing the first title, but I’ll touch on it briefly here before posting more details about it early next week..

There will now be two imprints under the Lyra’s Books umbrella. ‘Lyra’s Press’ which started with ‘Stardust’, will publish modern titles. Then, ‘Lyra’s Classics’ will publish (as the name suggests) classic, public domain titles. There will be rights for the Numbered and Lettered editions of both imprints. I will explain in depth how that will work in the next couple of days but briefly: both imprints will have separate rights tracks, and Lettered and Leather owners of ‘Stardust’ will be given first refusal on the first ‘Classics’ book. In the next news post I’ll try and explain a little about my reasoning for all of this!

Anyway, a little bit about Dorian-

This will be the first book of the ‘Classics’ imprint. It will be limited to 250 Numbered and 26 Lettered copies ONLY. We will not be producing a Standard edition for any ‘Classics’ titles.

The book is going to be finished to the highest standard possible, utilising the skills of award-winning craftsmen and designers. I will hand bind all the books, Phil Abel at Hand and Eye will print all the pages on his Heidelberg cylinder press, and Marcelo Anciano of Arete Editions will be designing the interior of the book. This little team is what you should expect on all Lyra’s projects going forward and for the foreseeable future. The Lyra/Arete/Hand and Eye unit is feeling strong and we all share the same quality and design sensibilities. It all feels very harmonious.

We have commissioned painter Gregory Manchess to provide us with a series of concept oil portraits for ‘Dorian Gray’. Greg is widely respected in his field and has won countless awards including the Hamilton King Award, the highest honour given by the Society of Illustrators. Greg has been awarded many high-profile commissions, including work for the Coen Brothers, National Geographic Magazine, Time and a number of commissions for stamps for the US Postal Service. Greg will be signing both editions.

You can find some images of his previous work here on his website – www.manchess.com

The image you can see at the top of this post is an oil pastel portrait Greg did of Oscar Wilde over a decade ago. He was thrilled when we approached him about illustrating our edition and together we decided that the Wilde portrait would work well as our frontispiece.

A foreword will be provided by Oscar Wilde’s only grandchild, Merlin Holland. Merlin has written extensively on the subject of his grandfather and is an honorary patron of the Oscar Wilde Society. He will sign the Lettered edition only.

Over the course of the next month or two, I will release more details/photos/prices etc. I just wanted, at this point, to give you a little more information about what is happening. As I said, more detailed info about how rights will work will be coming in a few days.

Stay tuned!

Rich

Per their Instagram post today, the next in Lyra's "Classics" series will be A Christmas Carol:

What with ACC being one of two works (the other being Lord of the Rings) of which I would own dozens of copies if space and cash weren't an issue, I nearly had a stroke when I read this - I can not wait to see what they do with it.

Coraline: The Red Thread Edition

https://www.lyrasbooks.com/lyras-press-title-announcement/

This will be presented in three states – 500 x Standard, 200 x Numbered and 26 x Lettered. Today is only the title reveal, so prices and more detailed info will be shared in the coming weeks. We are hoping to do the pre-order for this title around mid to late July 2022.

...we will be making a minor alteration to the text, with Neil’s permission. We have the concept of a red thread running throughout this book, connecting the beginning to the end which means the book will be letterpress printed in two colours throughout. The thread is described in the book as black but a black thread running through black silhouettes wouldn’t work. We asked Neil if we might be allowed to change the wording to fit our design and he agreed wholeheartedly and said we could do so… and also that we should call this edition ‘The Red Thread Edition’.

Both states of Lyra's Dorian are amazing!
Can't wait for Coraline and A Christmas Carol.

Has there been any update to the Coraline ordering issues? I have an order confirmation, but then the whole "things went awry during orders - we'll update soon" email went out, but nothing since.

Sales next week, and almost instant shipping. Basically as fast as Rich can process.

I think I like the model of pay and ship happening all at the same time.
