Just like the previous decade, I thought with us being halfway through the first year of the 2020s, it's about that time to start thinking of what the best movies of the year have been and what else we are looking forward to. Of course, the start of this decade has been, to say the least, rocky. I'm sure we all have seen just a small percentage of what we typically would have at this point. But even so, what are some of your favorite movies to come out this year?

For the record, here are the previous decade discussions:

The 1920s (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?17950-Top-Ten-Films-of-1920-1929)
The 1930s (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?17947-Top-Ten-Films-of-1930-1939)

The 1990s (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?17859-Top-Ten-Films-of-1990-1999)
The 2000s (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?17826-Top-Ten-Films-of-2000-2009)
The 2010s (https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?20804-Best-Films-of-the-Decade-(2010-2019))

(As well as an All-Time (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?17951-Your-Top-Films-of-All-Time) thread.)

For my part, in alphabetical order, I would single out the following 2020 releases, of which there have been very few so far. Not sure how many will remain on my list by the end of the year but I'm looking forward to some good movies hopefully during this second half.

Birds of Prey
Emma
Gretel & Hansel
Shirley
The Invisible Man
The Half of It

No doubt about that.

Although, I would have been pissed if I paid to see Da 5 Bloods in theaters. :P

I really want to see The Invisible Man and Emma, but I'm waiting for them to come out to rent. I haven't checked in forever so maybe the price has already come down. I also really want to see Shirley, just haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I'm pretty sure I've been to the theater back in Jan, probably to see Little Women.

Heather19

Yeah, I havent checked the prices recently so they might be normal rent prices now, but initially when everything went down you had to pay the full theater price just to rent the film. I also refuse to pay that much to watch it at home. I get why they did it, but I can wait.

I added the wrong Borat to Letterboxd. Good catch.

The whole year thing is tricky, First Cow was mainly released in 2020 and appeared on a lot of 2020 lists, so I figured I would keep it there. Eventually, when I redo these lists at the end of the decade I will have to shuffle things around. I actually just saw Little Fish today. Letterboxd lists it as 2020.

I saw Palm Springs so early in the pandemic and I figured it would move down, but my love for it continued to grow and I ended up watching it a second time and enjoying it even more.

2019 in Japan, maybe. It opened in North America January 17th, 2020

Most of the streaming services films opened on aren't in Canada. And I ain't paying 20-27 bucks to rent a new release.

The theater by me just opened up again so im going to check out Promising Young Woman this week while I'm off school.

I'm preparing my Top 30 of 2020 and catching up on a few of the movies I wanted to see, but one big one is eluding me, Tove, and I feel like I will love it so want to include it in my ranking, but I don't know when it will be streaming anywhere. I can't even find it on some of the seedier areas of the Internet... So weird.

Well, I can't believe it but I finally managed to put together my Top 30 of 2020 (https://letterboxd.com/maemiddleton/list/top-30-films-of-2020/) list. This was a weird and tumultuous year, to say the least. I'm still not caught up on every 2020 release I was looking forward to, still can't find Tove, and Zola is only coming out in June. But I feel good about this list. There wasn't any single film that jumped out as an obvious #1 but when I kept thinking about it, my mind always would come back to NRSA. It's such a small and intimate film where seemingly nothing happens. But it was beautifully shot and acted, I loved the realism (being from NJ I have been at the Port Authority and around so many times), and for a couple of parts of it I was fully in tears. Anyways:

Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Minari (2020)
The Father (2020)
Palm Springs (2020)
Another Round (2020)
Soul (2020)
Shirley (2020)
Tenet (2020)
Nomadland (2020)
Wolfwalkers (2020)
Birds of Prey (2020)
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
The Half of It (2020)
Shiva Baby (2020)
The Invisible Man (2020)
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Pieces of a Woman (2020)
My First Summer (2020)
Kajillionaire (2020)
Dating Amber (2020)
Red Post on Escher Street (2020)
The Woman Who Ran (2020)
Summerland (2020)
Happiest Season (2020)
One Night in Miami (2020)
Berlin Alexanderplatz (2020)
Possessor (2020)
Sugar Daddy (2020)
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020)

I love weird movies like that and this year seemed to be light on them. Actually, not that many horror movies appealed to me. Maybe because it was such a depressing year, with my mom passing away and just everything. Gretel & Hansel was good but not good enough...

Great list, Mae! We are in agreement with most of the films on your list. There are a few I still need to see.

The main difference is right there at #1. I don't get the love for Never Rarely Sometimes Always. I've seen films with similar subject matter handle it better. The film is almost a silent film in many parts. There are scenes where the two teen girls are together and they literally don't talk. I know it's a somewhat somber situation, but anybody who has spent time around teen girls knows that they never and rarely shut the fuck up!

I don't know, I just couldn't get into it.

EDIT: Possessor was style over substance. I do love Christopher Abbott. Fellow Connecticut boy! Keep an eye out for him, he was fantastic in a Sundance film called On the Count of Three.

I dunno, NRSA really really affected me. The sparse dialogue was actually a part of it. Autumn clearly went through a traumatic experience prior and it's being exacerbated by everything that's happening in the movie, including having to aimlessly wander around the hugest and loudest city that she's probably visiting for the first time (she might not have even been to Philly). What I think sold me was that single-take interview with the social worker. Most of the film was done in closeups but that was an amazing scene and she acted the heck out of that.

Agree on Possessor but sometimes I appreciate style over substance if the style is good.

Similarly to NRSA I think it just really hit me on a personal level. This was, as many have said, the perfect lockdown movie, plus it came out as my mom was quickly deteriorating, so it was such a welcome escape. I usually revisit these lists on Letterboxd and will shuffle things around, remove and add stuff as I watch more movies released that year, etc. But for now this is it.

CODA was an absolute delight. Emilia Jones gives one of the best performances of the year so far. I think she's an actress that is really about to blow up. CODA is a nice companion piece to one of my favorite films of last year Sound of Metal. The films are very different in tone, but share similar subject matter.

I haven't seen Plan B, but I know I will prefer it to Never Rarely. I didn't understand all the fuss about that one.

Maybe instead you should teach your students how to make a great film that takes liberties with the source material. You can do a double feature with The Shining.

Yeah, you probably did. I saw it in the theater December of 2020. It won Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars this past Oscars.

Cry Macho is on the New Yorker list? That's a joke.

The second list has way too many films that were released in 2020 so I bailed.

Pig should be on Hulu, that's where I saw it. Great performance by Cage, was really hoping for an Oscar nomination for him. And yeah, CODA has easily been my number one since I saw it when it dropped on Apple TV+. A tremendous film. I know it's a remake of a French film but sometimes it's done right.

It's that time again! Very exciting time when I go back to my spreadsheet (yes, I'm that kind of nerd!) and compile my list of the best movies of the year. Very tough choices this year, but that seems to be like any year. People who say "there are no good movies coming out" always confuse me, because I had to leave off so many really cool movies off my Top 35. And there are still lots of 2022 releases I've yet to see like: How to Blow Up a Pipeline, The Five Devils, Joyland, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Little Nicholas, Oink, Unicorn Wars, The Sales Girl, I can go on and on... It's why this list is always evolving, since I constantly update my living annual lists when I see and discover new movies. So, with that said, here is my list. I always want to add commentary for every movie but I feel overwhelmed and I'm not great at talking about movies. I just like watching them!

I've been waiting for this list! Those people that say, "there are no good movies coming out" are just consuming what Hollywood is forcing down their throats, and it's actually kinda sad.

I love your list, it's super eclectic as always. A few that really jump out at me are Kimi at #7. A lot of people missed that one and I thought it was a really good little thriller in the same vein as Rear Window. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is one I didn't see because I thought it seemed to get mixed reviews, but its placement has me intrigued.

So happy to see Emily the Criminal and Decision to Leave on there as well. Decision to Leave is a film I think will continue to grow in popularity. Not enough people have seen it once, let alone twice, which I feel is somewhat required.

I continue to work on my 2022 list. There are still a few films I need to see before I can tie a bow on it. The very first film on the top of that list is Aftersun.

Yeah, I knew I was going to love Kimi just from the trailer and the premise and I was right. It's such a good techno-thriller like Soderbergh's Side Effects and Contagion, but I feel even better. Leo Grande was also such a pleasant surprise. It's just two characters and it's sexy and sensual and sensitive, I really think Emma Thompson could've had a Best Actress nomination here. Decision to Leave I've only seen once so far but it was a really singular experience, definitely need to watch it again and then it might move up the list.

Your No. 1 makes me happy. It's my favorite of 2022 also.

I haven't bought physical media -blu rays, DVDS, video game discs - in years but I actually bought EEAAO on Blu-Ray so I could own it forever. Plus the sentimental value of course.

Every year I seem to really like a couple of movies everyone else seems to actively dislike and I don't know what it is. In 2021, that was Eternals (one of the best MCU movies for me and I think the only MCU movie still on my annual lists apart from Endgame), and The Matrix Resurrections. This year that's Men and Blonde, the latter of which I thought was a near-masterpiece and I'm still not comprehending all the hate for it.

The same can be said for Babylon, actually. I also loved the film, so I was happy to see that so high on your list. The only film I'm not familiar with is Mars One. It's not easy to have a film ranked so high on a list like this without me ever hearing of it, so I'm intrigued.

I know Babylon wasn't a box-office success, but I never consider how much money a film made as any kind of indicator. On Letterboxd, it has a very good rating, however. I really thought Babylon was such an amazing experience. The "Hello, college!" scene had me rolling with laughter. The entire thing was just genius. The ending montage was a complete WTF moment and I loved it. And that score! That was one of the few misses the Academy made on Sunday! And Mars One was really great as well, you should check it out, it's on Netflix. I think I just found out about it via the trailer. A much more simple and intimate drama, but so beautiful and touching.

Barbie at #1? Surprising.

So many films over the past few years I still haven't seen. Covid screwed over my enjoyment of the movies, along with film school. It's not only harder for me to get to the theatres on my own to see these smaller, art house films (which usually have a limited window), but for the first few years of decade the only place to catch many of the oscar movies is on streaming and I ain't paying 25 goddamn dollars to watch a movie at home. And then so many of those films after their digital premieres ended up on Prime or Apple or other OTT services I don't have so they basically don't exist for me...unless I go back to torrenting and I'd prefer to support these films than pirate them.

Mae's list of her top 35 movies has gotta be longer then my list of 2020s movies I've actually seen.

All that said: my #1 film so far is Poor Things.

For me the 2020's have seen a dearth of good films. The whole experience of going to a theater was shanked by Covid, the preponderance of insipid superhero movies, then actor/writer strikes. For four years I didn't care.

It's hard to build up excitement. I used to go to the theater 35+ times a year. I haven't been to the theater 30 times total since 2020.

mae

I can see that, and I feel like 2023 was a very strong year for movies. In the 2020s the smaller streaming movies have exploded and have been excellent (of course the vast majority of them are decidedly not).

It's actually the opposite for me. The day theaters opened back up during COVID I was there and it was amazing. My friend and I were typically the only people in the theater.

Most big-budget films weren't coming out, so I got to see a lot of smaller films in theaters like Sound of Metal. There's still nothing like going to the theater and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. I watch a lot of movies at home. I have a great setup, but I never truly unplug from society at home like I do at the theater.

Also, great list as always, Mae.
